Welcome to National Hot Dog Day!

National Hot Dog Day celebrates the popular cooked sausage, which many times is eaten in a bun. Hot dogs gained in popularity in the United States in the early 20th century, and are similar to frankfurters and wieners, which take their names from Frankfurt, Germany, and Vienna, Austria. In the United States, hot dogs were traditionally sold at hot dog stands and carts, and were prominent in New York City, as well as Chicago. They have become a prominent part of American culture, and have been closely associated with baseball. Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest and the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile have also become cultural icons.

RIPPLE EFFECT: What Syracuse and the Carrier Dome will look like without fans (DO; Emerman)

Despite the unknowns of the 2020 season, Syracuse faces one certainty: Almost every game will be held in an empty stadium.

For now, that includes the recently renovated Carrier Dome. There will be no deafening third downs. No ‘O’ chant in the Star-Spangled Banner. No Dome nachos.

“I think it’s going to be really weird,” said preseason All-American safety Andre Cisco. “I’ve seen the NBA guys do it, and they haven’t flinched at all. It’s a lot different with football, especially college football, when the fans are on your team, basically. It’s tough, but I guess we’ll have to do it for the sake of the game.”

Syracuse is working on contingency plans should Gov. Andrew Cuomo change course on banning spectators at athletic events, Director of Athletics John Wildhack said. But that seems unlikely given New York state’s cautious reopening process.

Having a fanless Carrier Dome for football, SU Athletics’ biggest source of revenue, will impact Syracuse’s bottom line. The ripple effects of athletes playing in empty stadiums, likely for the first time in their lives, will extend far beyond the Dome’s concrete walls. An empty Dome will lead to millions in losses for the university and surrounding areas, experts told The Daily Orange.

SU football generated $43.8 million of the athletics department’s record $99.8 million total revenue as of 2018-19, the most recent data available. Jeremy Losak, a professor of sports economics at Syracuse, estimates that roughly 20-30% of that football money came from ticket sales.

“It’s just going to be eerie,” said Danny Liedka, CEO and president of Visit Syracuse. “This is a sports town, this is a Syracuse town. I think there’s an emotional component that people are going to suffer, too. You get to go there, get to cheer on your team, enjoy friendships and family together in a great setting.”

Visit Syracuse is a branch of the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce focused on growing Onondaga County’s tourism industry. SU sporting events drive millions into the local economy from fans who come from outside central New York and spend money at games, hotels and restaurants, Liedka said.

But without fans, that revenue dries up. “It’s a big hit,” Liedka said.

Syracuse vs. North Carolina Football Prediction and Preview (athlon; McGuire)

After a brief delay to the start of the new season, it is time to play some college football in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. After making his return to the North Carolina Tar Heels last year, Mack Brown is ready to take UNC to the next step and prove why the team is already being considered an ACC contender in 2020. With a star quarterback in Sam Howell and a roster loaded with returning experience, not to mention a schedule that won't include Clemson, this could be a big year for North Carolina.

First up for the Tar Heels is a matchup with the Syracuse Orange. The Orange are coming off a disappointing 5-7 season in 2019 following a surprising '18 season lifted Cuse fan's hopes. After some coaching staff changes and a lack of a full spring practice schedule, it is unknown just how crisp Syracuse will be to start the new season.

Syracuse at North Carolina

Kickoff: Saturday, Sept. 12 at 12 p.m. ET
TV: ACC Network
Spread: North Carolina -22.5

When Syracuse Has the Ball

Among the biggest questions for Syracuse heading into the first game of the season is who will be carrying the football. With the departure of last season's leading rusher, Moe Neal, the next two in line figured to be Jarveon Howard and Abdul Adams. The only problem is neither player has been seen at practices, neither appeared on the depth chart this week, and while head coach Dino Babers has not been willing to shed much light on their respective situations, it has been reported that both plaeyrs have opted out. Instead, it could be redshirt freshman Jawhar Jordan's time to shine, as he appears first on the depth chart a year after getting 15 touches for 105 yards and a touchdown.

Chip Patterson and Kenny White give their picks for the game between Syracuse and North Carolina.

Syracuse at UNC: Setting up the season with Stephen Bailey and Nate Mink (PS; $; video; Bailey & Mink)

Year 5 of the Dino Babers era in Central NY starts this Saturday when Syracuse football travels to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina.

A massive underdog against the Tar Heels, Syracuse is already missing several key players for the season-opener after running backs Abdul Adams and Jarveon Howard both opted out of the season. Guard Dakota Davis' status is also unclear as he returns from an injury.

With Adams and Howard both out, Jawhar Jordan and Markenzy Pierre will likely receive the majority of the snaps at running back. Chris Elmore spent last year playing tight end, fullback and defensive tackle, but may fill in for Davis at guard based on Monday’s depth chart.

Watch the video above for a preview of Syracuse’s matchup with the Tar Heels on Saturday.

Defense & Special Teams — 2020 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Josh Black is the lone returning starter on the defensive front line. A redshirt senior, Black compiled 39 tackles and four sacks last season, starting every game at nose tackle. With the change of alignment to the 3-3-5, Black will slip outside to defensive end, a position where he started nine times as a freshman.

McKinley Williams’ return from injury is the force behind Black’s move to the outside. Williams returned from injury last season to play in SU’s last three games, enabling him to redshirt and return for a fifth season. A run-stuffer who owns ten tackles for loss in his career, Williams will start at nose tackle.

Senior Kingsley Jonathan, who has appeared in every game the last two seasons, is expected to be the other starter at defensive end and top pass rusher. Jonathan has 10.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks in his career.

Cody Roscoe, a senior and two-year starter at McNeese State who was granted immediate eligibility as a transfer, is slated to back up Black on the line. Roscoe has 16 sacks in his career, including nine last season. Redshirt sophomore Caleb Okechukwu is the other reserve defensive end. Okechukwu is yet to play for SU.

Curtis Harper, a redshirt junior, appeared in 11 contests last season and collected a pair of sacks. He will rotate in at nose tackle as a reserve.

Sports Illustrated's John Garcia Jr. calls in to talk about the commitment of Enrique Cruz and Syracuse's 2021 recruiting class with Wes Cheng on The Juice on the Cuse podcast hosted by SNY.tv. TJO associate editor Jim Stechschulte then calls in to discuss Syracuse football's latest depth chart.

How are Syracuse Football players reacting to low expectations? (cnycentral.com; video; Tamurian)

No games have been played yet and that's really all that matters.

Still, Syracuse football was projected to finished 14th out of 15 ACC schools in the conference's preseason poll, landed no players on the league's preseason 1st team and is a 22-point underdog at North Carolina Saturday (Noon, ACC Network).

It's hard to ignore even if you might disagree with it (as I do).

I asked one of the leaders of the Orange, starting quarterback Tommy DeVito his take on those low expectations outside the program.

Syracuse football season preview: Safety Cisco has much to lose but everything to gain in 2020 (nny360.com; St Croix)

Andre Cisco has perhaps the most to lose from any potential pitfalls of playing football for Syracuse University amid the COVID-19 pandemic. But his motivation as a program leader outweighed all opt-out considerations for the junior defensive back.

Cisco will play a starring role in the Orange’s new 3-3-5 defensive scheme under fifth-year coach Dino Babers when SU kicks off the season at noon Saturday with an Atlantic Coast Conference game at 18th-ranked North Carolina.

The Valley Stream native has remained consistent in his desire to play since SU opened training camp despite his status as a projected first-round NFL Draft pick by numerous experts, including ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.

Cisco enters as the FBS active career leader with 12 interceptions in just 22 career games, received Preseason All-American honors by five publications, and is on the watch list for four separate awards to honor the top defensive players in the nation.

“I would say (to expect) a lot of leadership and a lot more plays to be made,” Cisco said. “I’m looking to have a huge effect on the game at a safety position, it’s not easy always to do that when it seems like you’re far away from the ball. I’m looking to really fly around to the ball and really lift the energy of this team every game.”

UNC Football vs. Syracuse: Game info, preview, prediction and more (keepingitheel.com; Pearson)

The UNC football team begins the 2020 season by hosting Syracuse on Saturday. We have our game preview and prediction.

Finally. The 2020 UNC Football season is officially here on Saturday with the Atlantic Coast Conference kicking off games.

The North Carolina Tar Heels will open up the 2020 season at home against Syracuse as they begin a year in which they enter with high expectations. Following their 7-6 season that was capped off with their first bowl win since 2013, this Tar Heels team will return the majority of their starters and hope to contend for an ACC title.

With the ACC switching to a format of conference-only schedule plus one non-conference game, the top two teams will meet in Charlotte for the conference championship. But the addition of Notre Dame for this year makes things very interesting. The Tar Heels meet the Fighting Irish on Thanksgiving weekend a week before playing Miami. Both games could have a significant impact on who reaches the conference title game.

UNC will need to focus on just one game at a time and that starts on Saturday…

Coming into Chapel Hill on Saturday is Syracuse. The Orange are coming off a very disappointing 2019 season and are expected to finish near the bottom of the league in 2020.

Syracuse football jumps into the uncertainty that is 2020 (itlh; Lee)

A few days before kickoff and the only answers with Syracuse football have been how uncertain everything will be this football season for the Orange.

The 2020 season is here, believe it or not, for Syracuse football. While I am still not convinced anyone in the ACC or around the country will complete a full season only time will tell. Syracuse is not alone when they stare ahead to a season filled with uncertainty, especially on the field. It will not just be our first look at the Orange this season but a first real look by the coaching staff to see what team is available for them in 2020.

The uncertainty of what lays ahead is exactly what coach Dino Babers expects and the only thing anyone can expect. Talking to Stephen Baily from Syracuse.com Babers expressed the importance of the players stepping up.

“Coaches really have to take a step back and players are really going to get to step up. That whole analogy about being a player’s game, well it’s really a player’s game this year,” Babers said, “until you can get three, four games in and really know what your team can and can’t do so you can help them as coaches.”

The uncertainty is also facing which players will even be available for the Orange to step up. In 2020, it looks like the Orange will be without their most experienced running backs, Abdul Adams and Jarveon Howard. This leads to an opportunity for Jawhar Jordan who is listed as the lead back going into week one.

Another uncertainty is the offensive line, already facing injuries and depth concerns, as Syracuse will be without Florida transfer Chris Bleich who still has not received word on his waiver request from the NCAA, and TE/DL Chris Elmore is slated as the team’s left guard come week 1 against UNC.

DeVito Looking to Rev Up SU Offense in 2020 (spectrumlocanews.com; Larson)

In his first season as SU's starting quarterback last year, Tommy DeVito threw only five interceptions, an impressively low number. But, his team also only won five games, falling far short of expectations.

Heading into his junior season, DeVito is focused on bringing that second number up, the team's win total. He also says if that first number also goes up, the interception total, well, that's just one of the potential hazards of SU's risk-reward offense.

"Interceptions are not a thing," DeVito said. "Obviously, you want to take care of the ball, but a part of this offense is driving a fast car, and pushing it to the limits. So, we're just getting the ball in our playmakers' hands and letting them work."

DeVito claimed in another Zoom press conference recently that the slogan for the Orange offense is, 'Make the Tires Sing', a racing term that refers to the sound tires make when a car is being driven at high speeds. New offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert is apparently pedal-to-the-medal both in terms of philosophy and personality, and that combination won DeVito over quickly.

Players to Watch For: Scouting North Carolina (SI; Payne)

Earlier this week, we gave you the keys to a Syracuse upset in the season opener. The uniqueness of defensive coordinator Tony White’s 3-3-5 alignment will need to capitalize on any moments of confusion it can create in the mind of North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell. The offensive line must give Syracuse slinger Tommy DeVito time to find weapons like Taj Harris and Aaron Hackett past the sticks. If the Orange can keep it close, they may be able to steal this one on the road.

Now, we’ll take you behind enemy lines as we shine a spotlight on the Tar Heels your Syracuse Orange have had their eyes on throughout the week.

SAM HOWELL - QB

Sam Howell didn’t play like a true freshman in 2019. The nineteen-year-old threw more touchdown passes (38) than future NFL first-round draft pick Trevor Lawrence (36). His 3,641 passing yards were second in school history behind former second-overall pick Mitch Trubisky (3,748). He only got better as the lights grew brighter, throwing for three scores or more in North Carolina’s final five games. Howell played with the comfort and confidence of a seasoned vet, and he’s yet to participate in his first presidential election. That calm under pressure was what stood out to Syracuse DB Andre Cisco.

“I think he's a very poised quarterback on film,” Cisco said during a virtual press conference Tuesday. “There's a lot of plays he sits in the pocket well, he scans the field well. I think when you play a quarterback like that, you gotta be in coverage for a few more seconds than usual because he's not gonna panic as much as a lot of other quarterbacks I've seen. I respect that.”

Syracuse’s Most Important Players: #3 Airon Servais – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Bonaparte)

Coming off as bad a performance an offensive line can have, Airon Servais looks to anchor a unit that can protect its quarterback. Tommy DeVito was sacked more than any QB in the country last season, a staggering 44 times.

Why SU Needs Him

Servais played the majority of last season filling in for an injured Sam Heckel at center. Eventually he was granted the move out the left edge where he thrived. The Green bay, Wisconsin native was the most talented player on the line last season, it only made sense for him to play in the most important spot. Once that change was made, the team brought in a couple wins. A 49-6 victory down in Duke put some life back into the engine of Syracuse and a win to cap off the year at home against Wake Forest had fans hopeful towards this season. Tommy DeVito learned what it felt like to have time to throw the ball, and the offense started to gel nicely. Going into his senior campaign, Servais has the potential to be named All-ACC.

Best Case Scenario

This year’s depth chart has SU’s trenches looking weak. No Evan Adams, in his place the incredibly versatile Chris Elmore, and no word on Florida-transfer, Chris Bleich. This is an opportunity for Servais to lead this unit, and hopefully mold them into a serviceable offensive line. At this point you really can’t hope for them to be great, rather just for them to give DeVito enough time to find a receiver and generate some kind of aerial attack, as well as pave a way for Jahwar Jordan to provide Syracuse with a respectable ground game. If all goes well, DeVito won’t end up on the ground 44 times when it’s all said and done.

Worst Case Scenario

It can’t really get much worse than last season right? If Servais can’t get a hold on this group DeVito could be looking at a tough season and possibly a few visits to the chiropractor. The SU offense would crumble once again without much protection and rough season would be imminent.

ACC Chip Shots: Notre Dame built to contend, power ranking the top-tier teams entering 2020 season (cbssports.com; Patterson)

When the Big Ten and the Pac-12 started to cancel non-conference games as part of their move to a conference-only schedule (and their eventual move, Notre Dame needed games for 2020. Like a friendly neighbor or family member in a time of need, the ACC cleaned up its guest room and set an extra place at the dinner table. More specifically, the ACC established a 15-team, 10-game league schedule with one division and full member status for one season only.

The Fighting Irish get a full schedule and the opportunity to compete for an ACC Championship, but bring their NBC television revenue to the table to be distributed equally to all 15 schools along with the revenue from the league ESPN deal and the ACC Network. Notre Dame is going to be hanging around for a couple months, but they've agreed to buy some groceries and help out with the rent. That give-and-take between Notre Dame and the league is why Swofford has so often leaned on the "win-win" adage.

Ranking the ACC's 25 best college football players for 2020 (ESPN; Adelson & Hale)

Last season, the ACC was an unmitigated mess. Clemson, once again, was great, but the rest of the league lacked star power, with Florida State and Miami down, and Louisville, Virginia Tech and North Carolina still works in progress. But the result of 2019's growing pains figures to be a much improved product in 2020, and that's obvious in our rankings, where genuine stars such as Jackson Carman, Amari Rodgers and Javian Hawkins couldn't quite crack our top 25. Add in the one-year addition of Notre Dame and narrowing down this list gets even tougher (sorry, Liam Eichenberg and Ian Book). So, apologies to the long list of accomplished veterans (BC's Max Richardson, Pitt's Jimmy Morrissey) and up-and-coming talent (Clemson's Mike Jones Jr., Virginia Tech's James Mitchell) but cracking this year's top 25 requires a nearly flawless résumé.

1. Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson

With the new rules in place allowing for players to gain an extra year of eligibility due to the pandemic, Dabo Swinney dangled the idea that Lawrence could play three more seasons in Clemson. Forgive the rest of the ACC if it shuddered in horror. Lawrence has lost just one game as a starter -- last year's national championship against LSU -- and after some minor setbacks as a sophomore in 2019, he finished the year playing as well as anyone in college football, completing 68% of his throws with 22 TD passes and no picks over his final eight games. The only question now is what Lawrence will do in what -- despite Swinney's hopeful projection -- figures to be his final college season before becoming the top pick in the draft.

2. Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson

Sure Lawrence gets the headlines, and he gets the top spot in our preseason ranking, but Etienne returns as the two-time reigning ACC Player of the Year. When Etienne decided to return to school for his senior season, it seemed hard to believe, considering all he has accomplished. Etienne already owns the school and ACC records for rushing touchdowns (56) and total touchdowns (60) and goes into the season as the nation's active leader in career rushing yards (4,038).

3. Marvin Wilson, DT, Florida State

As productive an interior lineman as there is in the country, Wilson's biggest impact in 2020 might've come on social media, when he called out his coach for a misstatement that ultimately brought FSU closer together after a tumultuous offseason with a first-year head coach and limited face time with teammates. Wilson returned to college for 2020 to refine his game for the next level, and if he improves much from 2019, it'll be a nightmare for opposing blockers.

2020 Week 2 ACC Predictions (JHowell) (RX; HM)

2020 Week 2 ACC Predictions (JHowell)

From JHowell's website:
Below are the projections through the games of 9-12-2020. Games against non-FBS teams are excluded. The favorite is listed first with the projected margin of victory (i.e., the line) in parenthesis. 'TP' represents the total number of points expected to be scored in the game and 'Odds' represents the odds of the favorite winning straight-up (not against-the-spread).
That out of the way, here are the picks for week 2...

Thursday, September 10, 2020
#20-Miami (Florida) (-6) vs. #46-Alabama-Birmingham (TP=43 Odds=.624)

Saturday, September 12, 2020
#1-Clemson (-29) @ #35-Wake Forest (TP=58 Odds=.871)
#6-Notre Dame (-21.5) vs. #44-Duke (TP=54 Odds=.816)
#36-Florida State (-9.5) vs. #57-Georgia Tech (TP=54 Odds=.653)
#38-Louisville (-7.5) vs. #54-Western Kentucky (TP=57 Odds=.615)
#45-North Carolina (-3) vs. #43-Syracuse (TP=60 Odds=.541)

source: http://www.jhowell.net/cf/cfpred.txt

My Comments:
I'm anxious to see what Miami can do this year, but at this point I couldn't tell you if they'll cover or lose outright to UAB. The team I do look to cover is Duke - not saying they'll actually beat Notre Dame, but I expect them to stay within three touchdowns. On the other end is Syracuse only getting three points - are you kidding me? Of course that can only mean one thing: Orange win Saturday.

ACC Network analysts EJ Manuel, Mark Richt discuss 2020 Florida State (tomahawknation.com; Cox)

Heading into the first week of the season and an opener with Georgia Tech on Saturday, the Seminoles were a prime subject of an ACC media teleconference call on Tuesday morning.

On the call from the ACC Network were three analysts — two of them being former FSU quarterback E.J. Manuel and former quarterback coach and offensive coordinator Mark Richt. The familiar faces to Noles faithful gave their take on the 2020 squad, James Blackman, and the college football season as a whole.

“These guys know how to score points. The quarterback play has been fantastic (under head coach Mike Norvell at other schools),” Richt said. “I think a lot of time young quarterbacks hold onto the ball too long, so if James has learned anything it should be to get the ball out quick.”

A molder of several of the most successful passers in school history during the 1990’s, Richt dove deeper on his opinion of the redshirt junior Blackman. Richt said that under head coach Bobby Bowden, the only time they really changed up the offense was in 1992. He also said that when someone like Danny Kanell had practiced an offense for two years before starting, it was one of the things that made him a good quarterback. “Blackman hasn’t had that. Hopefully he’ll get that stability here that he needs.”

Teel: ACC football ready to 'crank it up' (richmond.com; Teel)

In keeping with the weirdness that is 2020, here’s some offbeat news regarding Thursday’s college football game between Miami and UAB, the season’s first to showcase a Power Five program.

The Hurricanes’ turnover chain, a program staple since 2017, must be disinfected after each use.

Welcome to sports in a pandemic.

“It’s not a turnover mask,” Miami coach Manny Diaz said, “which would have made some sense this year.”

Darn little about 2020 makes sense, so as the Hurricanes and Blazers, from Birmingham, Ala., prepare for their 8 p.m., kickoff on the ACC Network, you wonder if results nationally also will defy convention. After all, the coronavirus derailed spring practices and offseason conditioning, and heaven knows what infections and subsequent contact tracing will do to game-day rosters.

Champions other than Clemson in the ACC and Oklahoma in the Big 12?

Hasn’t happened since 2014.

A season in which Alabama isn’t ranked No. 1 at some juncture?

Such blasphemy last transpired in 2007, Nick Saban’s first year leading the Crimson Tide.

Most anything is conceivable.

“I’ve never been anywhere where you’re planning practices by the minute,” North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren said. “We’re usually weeks out with [planning] what we want to do on the [practice] field. You can’t operate that way right now.”

New York state moves high school football from fall to spring (PS; $; Kramer)

High school football in New York state will become a spring sport this season.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association has decided to move football from the fall to March 1 this year because of coronavirus concerns. Volleyball and cheerleading, which are also considered high-risk activities, will be pushed to the spring as well.

Lower risk sports, such as tennis, golf, swimming, field hockey, cross country and soccer remain on schedule for the start of practice Sept. 21.

"“We’ve spent two days speaking with nearly 500 athletic directors across the state and it’s clear that administering high-risk fall sports during the COVID-19 pandemic presents a significant challenge for our member schools,” Dr. Robert Zayas, executive director of the NYSPHSAA said in a statement. “These are unprecedented times and unfortunately, difficult decisions will have to be made to address this ongoing crisis. We continue to stay committed to providing support to our member schools and quality participation experiences for the students we serve.”

Bob Campese, co-chairman of Section III football, said he is “a little disappointed" with the move.

Watch F-35 fighter make 'coolest takeoff of the year' from Syracuse airport (PS; $; Moriarty)

It’s not every day you see a plane zoom straight up seconds after taking off from Syracuse Hancock International Airport. So when it happens, it’s pretty cool.

An F-35 Lightning II, the Air Force’s latest fifth-generation fighter and one its most capable, took off from the airport on Aug. 26. Video shot by airport operations officer Darren Gilcher shows the highly advanced multi-role fighter pointing its nose straight up after lifting off from the runway.

Coolest take off of the year so far at #SYR Airport (watch until the end). Thanks to our Ops Manager Darren for snagging this sweet video of an #F35 flexing its muscles this afternoon. #Military #Syracuse

A bit surprised that JHowell ranked Syracuse ahead of UNC

#45-North Carolina (-3) vs. #43-Syracuse (TP=60 Odds=.541)

Expects the game to be close, decided by a field goal.

wait so Howell has us as the better team but getting 3 in his ratings?

yeah a bit weird though based on what is going on in vegas. is he the only one that has it as being in a close game?

i still dont get why the line is 23+ 10-14 would make sense to me.

JHowell's computer dances to it's own drumbeat. That's not to say that it's wrong, but it totally ignores Vegas for sure.
