Welcome to World Play-Doh Day!

In 1955, Kay Zufall, a nursery school teacher from New Jersey, was in search of modeling clay for her students that wasn't as messy as regular modeling clay and that was also easier for young hands to work with. She learned that wallpaper cleaner had been used for modeling projects such as making holiday decorations, and thought it might be the solution. It turned out that she had a brother-in-law, Joseph McVicker, who was head of the Cincinnati-based Kutol Products Company, which was the largest manufacturer of wallpaper cleaner. (The pliable compound that was used to wipe the soot off of wallpaper was not as needed by this time, because wallpaper didn't need to be cleaned as much, since there had been a movement away from heating homes with coal to using electricity, oil, and gas.) McVicker had children begin trying the cleaner out as a modeling compound in 1955—possibly on September 16, although the significance of the date is unknown—and it was successful.

Zufall suggested to McVicker that the name be changed to Play-Doh. McVicker, along with his uncle Noah McVicker, formed a subsidiary from Kutol to make Play-Doh and named it Rainbow Crafts Company. Kutol continued to make soaps and cleaners and is still in existence today. Play-Doh first went on sale in 1956, at Woodward & Lothrop, a department store in Washington, D.C., and soon afterward it was on the shelves at Macy's and Marshall Fields. It originally was only available in off-white and came in 1.5-pound boxes.

Syracuse Football has played Pitt more than anyone, what's behind this series? (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

When Syracuse and 25th-ranked Pittsburgh take to Heinz Field on Saturday (Noon, ACC Network) it will be the 76th time the Orange and Panthers have played on the gridiron. This is a series that is now 104 years old, believe it or not!

Some interesting facts and standout games in this series:

Pittsburgh is 13-3 against the Orange since 2004, taking the series lead in that time 40-32-3

Axe: It’s only the second game, right? Syracuse football fans know better (PS; $; Axe)

Can the second game on a schedule define a football season?

Syracuse University football fans knew the answer to that question before they finished reading that first sentence.

All we have to do is take a trip back to last season for the answer to that question.

Syracuse went to College Park, Maryland on September 7, 2019 and got steamrolled by the Terps 63-20.

The Orange allowed 650 total yards, including 354 rushing yards. Maryland had four different backs rush for at least 67 yards and score a touchdown. The Terrapins scored a touchdown on seven of their first eight possessions. Maryland punted only three times, was 11 of 15 on third down and averaged nearly eight yards per carry. The 63 points were the most ever by Maryland against a ranked opponent.

Tommy DeVito lines up for a snap against Pittsburgh in the Dome last season. Pitt won the game 27-20 and DeVito left with an injury (CNY Central File Photo)

In 2004, Syracuse won a dramatic overtime game at the Dome that ultimately saved their chances to win a share of the Big East title. Since then, however, Syracuse has only beaten the Panthers in 2012 and 2017 by a combined four points. Mind you, that encompasses probably the worst Orange stretch ever from 2005-2009 but consider that the Panthers only have an eight-game series lead it is completely because of that stretch.

Despite opening loss, Syracuse football can still be competitive - The Juice Online (the juice; podcast; Cheng)

So it wasn’t the ideal start to the season for Syracuse on Saturday against North Carolina. After the defense mostly contained the Tar Heels for three quarters, UNC exploded for 21 unanswered points in the fourth to win 31-6.

It’s hard to get a read on this team given what an unusual year this is, and you still have to cut them some slack for opening on the road against a ranked conference opponent.

I chatted with former Syracuse defensive lineman Tyler Marona about the team, and he likes what he sees from SU’s new 3-3-5 defense under coordinator Tony White. And as a former pass rusher, Marona was complimentary of the Orange’s front three.

Are we in for a long season? Marona says that it depends on the health and development of this team.

“If health is going to be a problem, it’s going to be a long year,” he said. “But if we can get healthy, I see us being in the middle of the pack (in the ACC.”

On a personal note, Marona, one time host of the TradeMark podcast, is now the defensive line coach at Newport Harbor High School in California, so congratulations to him!

Editor in chief Brad Bierman then joins me to chat more about Syracuse’s opener, saying that the schedule makers did SU no favors by opening and closing on the road against preseason top 25 teams.

Brad also points out that Syracuse has a depth problem, and that’s no more evident than on the offensive line, where former fullback Chris Elmore is now starting at guard. He also chats about the upcoming decision the ACC must make on the start of the college basketball season.

Brad closes the show on some anecdotes about the late Georgetown coach, John Thompson, while I talk about a commitment from three-star 2021 Florida wide receiver Oronde Gadsden.

A historical comparison between Pitt and Syracuse football (247sports.com; O'Brien)

The Pitt vs. Syracuse series goes all the way back to 1916 when it started. Pitt leads the all-time series against Syracuse 40-32-3. The two teams have faced each other seven times since joining the ACC and Pitt has gone 6-1 in those ACC matchups.

Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi (37-29 overall record) is in his sixth season at Pitt. Narduzzi has gone 4-1 against Syracuse during his time at Pitt. He’s faced Syracuse head coach Dino Babers four times and has won three of those games.

Pitt has had the upper hand in this series over the last ten years. Pitt has won eight out of the last ten games against Syracuse, including the last two contests.

The last ten results between Syracuse and Pitt

Oct. 18, 2019: Pitt 27, Syracuse 20 (at Syracuse)

Oct. 6, 2018: Pitt 44, Syracuse 37 (at Pitt)

Why Syracuse Will Win

Oh sure, the Pitt offense worked against Austin Peay, but now it has to go against a much, much stronger secondary and better defense overall.

The 31-6 loss to North Carolina might not look great on the scoreboard, but Syracuse hung tough for three quarters before buckling in the fourth. It wasn’t a sharp effort in any way by the Orange offense that looked like it needed a game of prep work.

It’s possible this is a far stronger attack this week – QB Tommy DeVito wasn’t quite on the same page with his receivers in key moments.

Even so, again, it was a battle for 45 minutes with the secondary keeping QB Sam Howell and his great receiving corps from rolling until late. However …

Why Pitt Will Win

The North Carolina defensive front spent most of the game wearing DeVito as a hat.

The Syracuse offensive line was awful last year in pass protection, and it did next to nothing against the Tar Heels allowing seven sacks, 11 tackles for loss, and generating just 68 rushing yards.

Syracuse, meet the pass rush that was the best in the nation in 2019 and is still very, very good.

Pitt didn’t exactly pull punches in the 55-0 win over Austin Peay, but up 42-0 at halftime the D didn’t show all it could do. It came up with three sack snd eight tackles for loss, but it seemed like it was saving itself.

Narduzzi talks gameday procedures, rushing attack and Syracuse at latest presser - The Pitt News (pittnews.com; Lehmbeck)

Pitt football head coach Pat Narduzzi loves to talk about football. As COVID-19 protocols dominated college football storylines this summer, Narduzzi often playfully chided reporters for asking primarily about off-the-field topics.

When he took the podium for his weekly press conference Monday, two days after routing Austin Peay 55-0 to open the season, football still didn’t receive all the spotlight. Reporters asked multiple questions about the team’s safety precautions after seven Panthers missed Saturday’s game due to COVID-19 protocols.

Narduzzi, who said on Saturday he doesn’t talk about injuries, wouldn’t reveal much information on the subject. He said the players who tested positive must quarantine for 10 days after the day they were tested, but he wouldn’t reveal when the seven players tested positive — or if they’d be available for Saturday’s matchup against Syracuse.

But he did express his confidence in the team’s protocols to keep the players and staff safe.

“I feel safe as I can be in this building and with the people that I’m surrounding myself with,” Narduzzi said. “I trust our players when they walk down the hallway are doing the right things, when us old people are walking through the facility.”

Another pregame observation came up in Monday’s press conference, as well — neither Pitt or Austin Peay took the field before the playing of the national anthem on Saturday. Narduzzi said it was an easy decision because the game was played in an empty stadium.

How to Fix the SU Running Game – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Klein)

The Syracuse offensive line didn’t do the depleted running back room any favors in Saturday’s loss to North Carolina. SU ran for just 68 yards against UNC, and when Tommy DeVito is the team’s leading rusher Syracuse fans should sense something is wrong.

With starting left guard Dakota Davis on the shelf until October, and Florida transfer Chris Bleich ineligible, fullback Chris Elmore is tasked with guarding the interior on an offensive line that, when healthy, ranks among the worst in college football. But the Orange have to recognize their limited strengths.

Left tackle Airon Servais and right tackle Matthew Bergeron are easily the best the Orange have to offer up front. Their starting running back Jawhar Jordan is just 5’9”, 172 lbs. The redshirt freshman is not built to run up the middle. Then again, nobody is with this offensive line. It’s time the Orange start focussing the run game on what has a chance of working.

Jordan and the rest of the Orange tailbacks can also use every bit of deception they can get. Offensive Coordinator Sterlin Gilbert tried to integrate Jordan into the passing game, and was successful at times. The Farmingdale, NY native tallied 17 yards on three receptions. Gilbert has to convince opposing defenses to respect the SU backs as receivers if Syracuse wants to make the ground game as accessible as possible for the shorthanded running back room.

Syracuse vs. Pittsburgh - Game Preview - September 19, 2020 - ESPN (ESPN)

No. 25 Pittsburgh is part of the national rankings as it opens ACC play with a visit from Syracuse on Saturday afternoon.

However, Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi isn't the least bit impressed as the latest poll included the removal of nine teams from the Big Ten and Pac-12 due to their conferences not playing football at the moment.

"I don't really care about it," Narduzzi told reporters. "Doesn't matter. I don't want our kids to look at it. I'd rather be disrespected, play with a grudge and chip on our shoulder. We know what kind of football team we have in here. It doesn't matter what people think on the outside. It's what we do on the field.

"With less conferences out there, it doesn't matter. Less people playing, matters less this year than a year ago. Our job is to go out and win football games on Saturdays."

The Panthers (1-0, 0-0 ACC) opened their season with a 55-0 thrashing of overmatched FCS program Austin Peay. Syracuse (0-1, 0-1 ACC) had a much tougher first foe and lost 31-6 at then-No. 18 North Carolina.

Despite their game-long offensive ineptness, the Orange trailed just 10-6 entering the fourth quarter before the Tar Heels hammered them with three fourth-quarter touchdowns.

"A lot of times we shot our own selves in the foot," Syracuse coach Dino Babers said. "That's a good football team. We knew we had to really do things right to win down there in that situation, but I thought for three quarters it was a heck of a football game."

The Orange allowed 463 yards against the Tar Heels but recorded two interceptions. Junior safety Andre Cisco grabbed the 13th of his career, the most among active FBS players and tied for fourth in school history with Walt Slovenski (1946-48).

1897: An Syracuse football player was headed for a go-ahead TD until he was tackled ... by a sideline reporter (PS; $; Croyle)

College football was wild in its infancy.

Imagine for a moment that the result of a college game today, played between two bitter, inter-state rivals, was decided by a textbook tackle of an offensive player who was running down the field, certain he was about to score the winning touchdown, but was tackled, not by an opposing defensive player, but instead by a reporter who had wandered out onto the field of play.

But that was what happened in the game between Syracuse and Colgate, played in Hamilton, N.Y., on Oct. 16, 1897.

Despite already being considered to be one of the “strongest” football rivalries in New York State, attention by the media on the morning of the game was minimal.

Syracuse Football: Pittsburgh has dominated series with Orange of late (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football on Saturday will face a ranked Pittsburgh team that has controlled this series in recent years, albeit with tight contests galore.

Syracuse football and Pittsburgh will go toe to toe this Saturday afternoon from Heinz Field, with no fans in the stands, and the Panthers a huge favorite to prevail.

Pitt is now the No. 25 squad across the country in the latest Associated Press top-25 poll after destroying Austin Peay, 55-0, at home this past weekend in the Panthers’ 2020 season opener.

When Pittsburgh and the Orange take the field on Sept. 19 at noon, with the ACC Network providing television coverage, the two former Big East Conference rivals and current Atlantic Coast Conference foes will continue a long-time series that dates back to 1916, according to a press release on the Panthers’ athletics department Web site.

Pittsburgh owns the overall advantage, 40-32-3. The squads have competed against one another every year since 1955. More recently, the Panthers have captured 15 of the last 18 affairs in their series with Syracuse football.

Despite this dominance, these crews are playing close encounters of late, as six of the past eight duels have gotten decided by single digits. In 2019, Pitt got by the Orange inside the Carrier Dome, 27-20.

The ‘Cuse, which fell to then-No. 18 North Carolina, 31-6, in Chapel Hill, N.C., this past weekend in the Orange’s 2020 term opener, has struggled at Heinz Field.

The Panthers are a stellar 8-1 versus Syracuse football at Heinz Field, with the lone ‘Cuse victory there taking place in 2001, when the facility had first opened.

Since Pittsburgh and the Orange joined the ACC, the Panthers lead the series, 6-1. Overall on the road against Pitt, Syracuse football has a record of 11-23 in this series.

Most ACC Top 25 Teams Ever? Not quite. (RX; HM)

Most ACC Top 25 Teams Ever? Not quite.

From the official ACC weekly press release...

Seven ACC teams are ranked in this week's AP Top 25 poll. Clemson headlines the poll at No. 1 for the second consecutive week. The Tigers are followed by No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 12 North Carolina, No. 17 Miami, No. 18 Louisville, No. 20 Virginia Tech and No. 25 Pitt. Georgia Tech, Virginia and Florida State are also receiving votes.
According to that press release...
This marks the first time the ACC has had seven teams in the AP Top 25 poll since Sept. 11, 2005
Which obviously begs the question: which seven ACC teams were ranked on 9/11/2005? Here's the AP poll for that week; I've highlighted the ACC teams in light blue and the future ACC teams in a slightly darker shade...

Why the B1G Reversal? (RX; HM)

Why the B1G Reversal?

The B1G rumor these days is that the Big Ten is going to vote "any day now" on reversing their decision to postpone football until the Spring. Obviously this is a bad look for the conference that seems to picture itself as the leaders (and legends) of college football...

So why would the Big Ten agree to wearing egg on their collective faces? To answer that, consider which teams are playing within the Big Ten footprint:

  • Notre Dame (Indiana and Purdue)
  • Cincinnati (Ohio State)
  • Pittsburgh and Temple (Penn State)
  • Navy (Maryland)
  • Iowa State (Iowa)
What's worse than not playing football? Watching your in-state non-conference rivals* play football. Of course, two of those teams are in the ACC, which gives sports fans in the Mid-West a local power conference team to watch while the Big Ten sits idly by.

update, from Detroit News: Big Ten football on hold until questions answered

* I know, Big Ten fans will say these teams are not their rivals. Fine. They still compete locally for fans, recruits, and dollars. If you want to call them competitors instead of rivals, be my guest.

‘Inexcusable’: Art critic shames Syracuse museum for planned Jackson Pollock auction (PS; $; Herbert)

The Everson Museum of Art’s decision to auction off a painting by Jackson Pollock is “inexcusable,” according to a scathing new column from The Los Angeles Times.

Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic Christopher Knight called out the Syracuse museum Monday for sending Pollock’s 1946 “Red Composition” to the auction block. He especially took issue with the timing of the announcement, the speed of the sale — scheduled for Oct. 6 at Christie’s in New York City — and the likelihood that a groundbreaking, influential piece of art available for public view would soon end up in a private owner’s hands.

“...t was obvious that museum officials were worried — and maybe more than a little embarrassed — by the inexcusable move they were about to make,” Knight wrote in the Times. “Like naughty children hoping the grown-ups wouldn’t notice tiny hands dipping into the cookie jar, they dropped the stunning press release into the media black hole that is Labor Day weekend.”

The Everson announced on Thursday, Sept. 3, that it would auction off the painting to help diversify its collection and acquire works created by artists of color, women artists, and other under-represented creators. A press release said the Board of Trustees of the Everson Museum of Art voted unanimously to sell the painting with the blessing of The Dorothy and Marshall M. Reisman Foundation; the Reismans, both deceased, donated it to the museum in 1991.

Bottom 25 rankings (CBS Sports, Fornelli)

4. Syracuse0-1Syracuse never looked like it would beat North Carolina on Saturday, but the Orange trailed only 10-6 after three quarters. Then things fell apart in a hurry, and the final score was 31-6. This week the Orange are on the road again facing Pitt.
