Welcome to National Comic Book Day!

Today is a day to celebrate the popular entertainment and collector's item, the comic book. The first American comic book is seen as being Famous Funnies, which was released in 1933, although many books and comics predated it and helped lead to its creation. For example, an 1842 hardcover book titled The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck was made up of comics. In the early 20th century periodicals that contained comics were printed in the United States. American comic books are divided into different eras. In 1938, the release of Superman launched the Golden Age of comic books. Superhero comics were introduced and very popular for most of this era. The Silver Age is seen as beginning with the introduction of Flash in 1956, which led to a rejuvenation in superhero comic books. The Fantastic Four and Spider-Man came about during this era, and the era lasted until sometime in the early 1970's, when the Bronze Age began, which lasted until the mid-1980's. From the end of the Bronze Age until the present day is known as the Modern Age. Non-mainstream comic books such as underground comix sprang up in the 1960's, followed by alternative comics in the 1980's. Comic book stores became popular in the 1970's, and comic book conventions are another way that collectors and comic book fans have connected and enjoyed their hobby.

Is Syracuse's game against Georgia Tech a must win? (247sports.com; McAllister)

Syracuse football has started the season 0-2, losing two games on the road against ranked opponents. In a strange year with a modified schedule due to the pandemic, some of those struggles should have been expected. Playing two quality opponents on the road while you have new coordinators on both sides of the ball that had to implement their new systems without spring ball and with a less stringent training camp. However, where the struggles occurred has led to the fan base expressing significant frustration.

Offensively, Syracuse has managed just one touchdowns in two games, are averaging just eight points per game, and have failed to take advantage of turnovers as well as red zone opportunities. Defensively, they've been really good. The struggles have led to losing both of the first two games, with each one winnable in its own way. Syracuse should have had a double digit lead heading into the fourth quarter at North Carolina, and probably should have had a lead against Pittsburgh in the fourth quarter as well.

Axe: Let's see Syracuse Football floor it against Georgia Tech (PS; $; Axe)

The Syracuse University football team is searching for some open road.

As it stands right now, the Orange offense is stuck behind a garbage truck in a school zone.

Will Saturday’s home opener against Georgia Tech at the grand opening of Carrier Dome 2.0 give Syracuse the window it has been seeking to floor it?

Syracuse head coach Dino Babers has used a racing analogy when describing the man who has the keys to his offense, repeating the mantra to an ACC Network reporter just before the Orange kicked off at Pittsburgh last week.

"I told him the other day, I said, 'I want you to be the guy that was driving the Ford in ‘Ford vs Ferrari,’ Babers first said in June of his starting quarterback Tommy DeVito.

“We want you to know everything there is to know about this offense, and we want you to be aggressive," Babers said. "You’re in search for the perfect lap. You’re in search for the perfect game, the perfect throw, the perfect quarter. And we want to be aggressive in everything we do until it’s time not to be aggressive.”

Syracuse football vs. Georgia Tech predictions: See our picks (PS; $; Staff)

The Syracuse football team will face Georgia Tech at noon Saturday in the Carrier Dome.

It’s time for our predictions. The panel includes Brent Axe, sports columnist; Chris Carlson, SU sports reporter; Mike Curtis, sports reporter; and Nate Mink, SU football reporter.

BRENT AXE

Syracuse 24, Georgia Tech 21

The Orange offense hasn’t been able to get out of its own way the last two weeks. Whether its Tommy DeVito, Rex Culpepper, or maybe moving Chris Elmore to QB, I say the offense awakens to do just enough to squeak out a win in the debut of Carrier Dome 2.0 against the Yellow Jackets. Syracuse will need plenty of turnovers to cash in its first win of the season, and I think the Orange defense can keep up a stellar run and rattle Georgia Tech freshman QB Jeff Sims into enough opportunities to do it.

Syracuse hosts Georgia Tech; first game in renovated Dome (AP; Kekis)

Syracuse coach Dino Babers didn’t see the big improvement he expected when his Orange dropped their second straight road game to start the season. He remains upbeat.

“We’re barely misfiring on stuff. It looks big to everybody else. It’s small to us,” Babers said. “We’ve got to take care of those little things. If you take care of the little things, the big things will take care of themselves. I’m looking for the day when we come out of the clouds, when we get out of the smoke, and everybody sees what we can do.”

Playing the first game inside the newly renovated Carrier Dome might provide that boost. Syracuse (0-2, 0-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) hosts Georgia Tech (1-1, 1-0) on Saturday in a rare trip north for the Yellow Jackets.

Syracuse.com’s Brent Axe and Chris Carlson look back on SU football’s loss to Pittsburgh and preview the Orange’s matchup with Georgia Tech in the first game at the renovated Carrier Dome. You’ll also hear from Syracuse head coach Dino Babers during Syracuse Soundbites.

Syracuse Orange v. Georgia Tech Prediction & Preview (9/26/20) - The Juice Online (the juice; Staff)

Syracuse will try for its first win of the season when they host Georgia Tech (12:00 p.m. ET / ACC Network Extra) in the newly renovated Carrier Dome on Saturday. Ahead of the game, The Juice Online’s Jim Stechschulte and Wes Cheng give their predictions below.

Jim Stechschulte
Season Record 0-0

Georgia Tech visits the Orange, led by freshman quarterback Jeff Sims, who poses a different threat than what Syracuse has seen this season. Sims is elusive, being sacked only once while leading the Yellow Jackets with 146 rushing yards to go with his 521 passing yards.

The Orange 3-3-5 defense has only seen pocket quarterbacks to date, so their speed will be tested. The SU defense, which has three interceptions and two fumble recoveries, will undoubtedly be looking to cause turnovers, as Sims has thrown four picks and owns one of the Jackets’ three lost fumbles.

Georgia Tech has been shaky in run defense, giving up 4.9 yards per carry (sacks removed), but have shown their own knack for playmaking, amassing five sacks on the season while forcing five turnovers of their own. The Orange are undoubtedly hopeful to get some of the kinks of their aerial attack worked out, as UCF shredded the Jackets for 417 yards through the air, including three plays of over 40 yards.

Defensive end Curtis Ryans’ availability for Tech will be a big factor in the game. Ryans had a pair of sacks in their opener, was one of three defensive starters who missed the UCF game, but is now listed on the Jackets’ depth chart.

While the game will be memorable for christening the Stadium (are we actually calling it that?), those memories will most likely not be positive. SU’s issues with their offensive line will not be fixed, but an opponent closer to their level will make things look better. The Jackets claim a sloppy game, 23-17.

Wes Cheng
Season Record 2-0

Georgia Tech started the season with a bang, upsetting Florida State on the road in the season opener, 16-13. But the enthusiasm was dampened in week 2, with a crushing 49-21 home loss to UCF. True freshman quarterback Jeff Sims looked like one in the loss, throwing two backbreaking interceptions and fumbling away a ball in the red zone.

College football: Syracuse excited for new Dome experience even without fans (nny360; St Croix)

When Syracuse University football coach Dino Babers and his players envisioned the debut of the renovated Carrier Dome set for Saturday, they pictured nearly 50,000 roaring fans pushing the new sound system to its limit.

The Orange remains excited to break in the new surroundings with its home opener slated for noon Saturday against Atlantic Coast Conference foe Georgia Tech, but can’t help but feel for the fan base that will be unable to attend the unveiling of the “New Stadium Experience” due to state COVID-19 restrictions.

Syracuse is aiming to bounce back from an 0-2 start overall and in the ACC when it plays the Yellow Jackets (1-1, 1-0) while hosting its first game in the new-look Dome, following $118 million in upgrades as part of the largest capital project in SU history.

“We miss our fans, we’re going to miss our home-field advantage, and we’re looking forward to getting that opportunity again,” Babers said of playing the home opener in an empty stadium.

“Being in there with 40,000 people is like being somewhere else with 90 (thousand),” he added. “It gets so loud, and I hope the acoustics are even better. It’s such a place where you can get a bunch of people on top of each other and make it like you’re in Wolverine Stadium or somewhere with 100,000 people.”

Syracuse Athletics Redefines 'Success' (SI; Payne)

The debut of the newly renovated Carrier Dome is a landmark triumph that Syracuse Athletic Director John Wildhack says has been years in the making. The team set to christen the $118-million-dollar venture hasn’t been nearly as successful, though. At least, not in terms of wins and losses. The 0-2 Syracuse Orange will be the first step beneath the Dome’s brand-new roof, which is made from 8-million-pounds of steel designed to sustain up to 7,700-tons of snow. Wildhack expressed a desire to win games in the modernized facility when he spoke with members of the media on Thursday, but also said winning wasn’t everything.

"Success is: if you compete, you still want to win,” Wildhack reasoned. "So there is the competitive element. I'm not going to be dismissive of that. But in some ways, you know, success is also 'do you have the opportunity to play?' And we have had the opportunity to play."

ACC Football vs COVID Pandemic 2020 (cardiachillcom; HM)

Everybody knew it would be a challenge to have college football - or even college, for that matter - while the COVID-19 pandemic was still on-going. Some conferences (which shall go unnamed but are headquartered to the West of Pittsburgh) at first didn’t even want to try, but when they saw the ACC succeeding, one of them recently changed its stance.

I write “succeeding”, but the fact of the matter is, it’s a close, hard-fought struggle. This Saturday will be the third weekend of ACC football. During that time the ACC originally had plans for 27 games and/or bye weeks. So far, 12 of those 27 have had to be modified, including half of this week’s games.

The contest between the Louisville Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Panthers was one of only three originally-scheduled matchups this week, along with Florida State versus Miami and Georgia Tech at Syracuse. Notre Dame versus Wake Forest has now been pushed back to December 12th because of the pandemic, and the other three games are all revised from the original 11-game ACC football schedule.

Clemson Football: ACC wisely gave itself built-in wiggle room (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

The Clemson football schedule has wiggle room, and that was a wise move from the ACC

The 2020 Clemson football season may not go off without a hitch, but it’s clear that the ACC- unlike the Big Ten- was wise in building in wiggle room to the schedule.

While we haven’t seen a Clemson football game interrupted due to COVID-19 yet- and hopefully we won’t- it’s clear that the ACC had plans in place for when those situations would arise throughout the 2020 season when the conference was putting together its schedules.

Through just the first three weeks of the season, we’ve already seen four ACC games postponed or canceled due to positive tests or contact tracing including: NC State at Virginia Tech, Virginia at Virginia Tech, Charlotte at North Carolina, and Notre Dame at Wake Forest.

Clemson football: 3 ACC programs that will compete with the Tigers soon (rubbingtherock.com; Benedict)

Clemson football has no competition within the ACC, but that will change.

We are in the middle of complete domination from Clemson football when it comes to the conference. The Tigers are so far ahead of where any other program is, that they are all a black dot in the rearview mirror at this point.

However, there are three programs that are on the rise and will compete with Clemson in the near future.

We know, Clemson fans have a hard time admitting that other programs could possibly challenge them. When you look at the overall talent, Clemson football is so far ahead of other schools in the conference but there is more to success than simply talent, and the Tigers have proven that repeatedly.

For most of the last five years, Clemson has been nowhere near the most talented team on the field in their College Football Playoff games, but they have been the best coached and the most sound team in each of the last five CFP’s regardless of wins and losses. That has allowed them to climb to the top of the college football mountain.

There are three areas that a program has to be sound in when it comes to being able to compete with Clemson from an ACC standpoint.

  • Coaching
  • Recruiting
  • Development
These are the same three areas that Clemson football has excelled in over the last decade which has allowed them to take the step that they have on a national stage.

Currently, there are three ACC programs that seem to be coming up quickly in those three areas and could see themselves giving Clemson a run for their money in the ACC over the next three to five years.

Virginia Tech Football: Can Hokies realistically compete for 2020 ACC title? (satrudayblitz.com; Hanich)

Virginia Tech football is one of a few teams in the ACC that is experienced and talented enough to contend for a conference title.

Virginia Tech remains one of the most stable and consistent winning programs in college football. For 27 consecutive seasons, the Hokies have been to a postseason game, which is the longest active streak by all FBS teams in the nation. During those 27 seasons, the Hokies have accounted for an impressive 247-101 overall record. This was done by just two head coaches in that span

Justin Fuente enters into his fifth season as the head coach of the Hokies. During those four seasons, he has coached the Hokies to an overall record of 33-20 which is a continuation on the impressive run that former head coach Frank Beamer brought to the program.

Scheduling Update: MWC, Pac-12 Enter the Fray (RX; HM)

Scheduling Update: MWC, Pac-12 Enter the Fray

When the Big Ten announced it would begin football on October 24th weekend, you knew it was only a matter of time before others joined them. Now the Mountain West has announced it will also begin play on October 24th, and the Pac-12 will follow suit starting on November 6th...
The Mountain West has approved a return to play plan that will see the league take the field for college football games beginning Oct. 24. It will play an eight-game, conference-only schedule with a league championship game on Dec. 19.

The Pac-12 will play a seven-game season beginning Friday, Nov. 6 with the Pac-12 Championship Game scheduled for Friday, Dec. 18. Fans will not be permitted to attend the games.
Thus we now have every conference except the MAC playing some form of football season this year. Here's how the FBS conferences compare:

FSU/Miami 2020 - It could get ugly (RX; HM)

FSU/Miami 2020 - It could get ugly

FSU/Miami Rivalry Week just doesn't have the same luster this year...
Miami and Florida State are almost identical based on Roster Talent.

4 & 5⭐ Recruits on Each Team

Miami 36
FSU 33

AVG Player Ranking
FSU 88.99
Miami 88.8

Miami is a 11 point favorite vs FSU this weekend, what's the biggest reason why in your opinion?
— NCAAF Nation (@NCAAFNation247) September 24, 2020
I went with quarterback. Not that D'Eriq King is without flaws - he's above average, but I haven't seen anything I'd call Heisman-worthy from him (yet) - but did you see James Blackman against Georgia Tech? To be clear, that's the GT team which couldn't stop the UCF offense to save their lives, yet they absolutely shut down Blackman. How much more so will the Hurricane defense feast on this guy?

BREAKING: NC State Coaches 2020-21 Pay Cuts (RX; HM)

George McDonald is getting a haircut...

BREAKING: NC State Coaches 2020-21 Pay Cuts

In "A Message from Director of Athletics Boo Corrigan", the NC State AD states
As a result of COVID-19, we expect to lose between $25- $35 million in projected revenue.
Therefore, the school has announced the following cost-cutting measures:
Due to the circumstances and reality we face, effective October 24, 2020 through June 30, 2021, we will implement temporary salary reductions or furloughs to each permanent member of our staff, as follows:
  • Coaches and staff members making $200,000 or more will have their salaries temporarily reduced by 20 percent.
  • Coaches and staff members making $100,000 to $199,999 will have their salaries temporarily reduced by 15 percent.
  • Coaches and staff members who make less than $100,000 will be furloughed for 19 days.
The key is "effective October 24, 2020". That's the day of the UNC game. In other words, the coaches will receive full pay up to the game against the Tar Heels - which makes some sense - but not for the games after that. Which games, you ask? Here you go:
Oct. 31st - BYE
Nov. 6th - Miami
Nov. 14th - Florida State
Nov. 21st - Liberty
Nov. 28th - at Syracuse
Dec. 5th - Georgia Tech

Is VT ready to contend in the 2020 ACC? (RX; HM)

Is VT ready to contend in the 2020 ACC?

The Virginia Tech Hokies will finally play their first football game of the season this weekend. The Hokies will host the 1-0 NC State Wolfpack, who are coming off an impressive display of offense in last week's win over Wake Forest. Virginia Tech is ranked 20th in this week's AP poll - but is it deserved? What do the poll voters see in the Hokies?

Quarterback.

How good is starting QB Herndon Hooker?

In 2019, @HenBoss2's pass efficiency rating was 165.8, but he was 3 attempts shy of 15 attempts/game, so he's not listed in the NCAA pass efficiency stats.

2020 Week 4 ACC Factoids (RX; HM)

2020 Week 4 ACC Factoids

ACC Week 4 Factoids

This week is the home opener for Boston College, Syracuse, Virginia and Virginia Tech. These are the last four teams to play at home.

It's also the first game of the season for Virginia and Virginia Tech. Both teams lost their first week opponent due to the pandemic, and last week they were originally scheduled to face each other but that game has been rescheduled for December 12th - also because of COVID-19.

The Notre Dame at Wake Forest game has also been rescheduled for December 12th due to Irish players testing positive for the novel Coronavirus.

The Syracuse Orange are opening in a newly-renovated dome. Ironically, the game will not be carried live on local television because it has been preempted by a NY Yankees baseball game (it will be available by streaming locally and on television throughout the rest of the ACC footprint).

ShoppingTown’s dying gasp: It’s raining in the mall (PS; Moriarty)

The last years of ShoppingTown Mall were marred by constant roof leaks and other maintenance nightmares through the neglect of its deadbeat owner, one longtime tenant said.

“The place should be condemned,” said Anthony Iglesias, who has operated the Syracuse Martial Arts Academy in the DeWitt shopping mall for 10 years.

Iglesias said maintenance crews had to place buckets and even garbage bins around the mall’s common areas and inside stores to catch the water that poured in through roof leaks every time it rained hard. The rug on the mall floor in the Sears wing, where the academy is located, is full of water stains, he said.

“Any time we had a bad rain, you could walk through the mall and see buckets in the halls,” he said.

Glad SUMB is trying to soldier on during the pandemic. I have seen a bunch of bands allowed to sit in the stands (using social distancing rules of course) and perform from there. Very disappointed to hear that SUMB won’t even be allowed in the dome.

I hope that changes in October. I understand the reluctance to let the band march on the field at halftime but with all precautions they are taking, why can’t they perform inside the dome? Bummer.
