Beer making can be traced to about 6,000 years ago in ancient Sumeria. At that time, beer was cloudy because of lack of filtering, and it was drunk through a straw. By 2000 BCE, the Babylonians were brewing 20 types of beer. The Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans made beer, although wine became much more popular with the Romans—they considered beer to be the drink of the Barbarians and it was only popular on the edges of the Empire. Germanic groups were brewing beer by 800 BCE. Because of contamination, beer was a much safer drink than water during the Middle Ages; it was drunk by people of all ages from all classes. The Catholic Church even got involved with brewing beer, and abbeys were testing grounds for improvements in brewing. Beginning in the ninth century, in Germany, hops began being introduced, standards were set up for beer, and beer began being mass-brewed. The 1516 Beer Purity Law—Reinheitsgebot—said a certain level of quality must be met for German beer. All beer could only be made with water, hops, malted barley, malted wheat, and yeast. In the 1800s, Louis Pasteur discovered the role of yeast in the fermentation process, as well as pasteurization. Soon came along automatic bottling, commercial refrigeration, and railroads. All of these advancements allowed beer to be more easily produced and distributed. By 1880, there were 3,200 breweries in the United States. Prohibition closed them, but today there are almost as many breweries as there were in 1880, aided in part by the rise in the number of small craft breweries. With so many breweries and styles of beer to choose from, there is plenty of beer that can be drunk on National Drink Beer Day! SU News Hillman: SU’s win over GT was historic. It was more bizarre in person. (DO; Hillman) A walk outside the Carrier Dome on a typical home opener features the smell of grilled hotdogs, the sight of orange and blue apparel and the sound of a booming stereo. Syracuse students and fans from across the region arrive to celebrate the end of summer and the return of college sports. But this Saturday, the opening of the renovated Dome was silent. Only one student in a dark blue Syracuse shirt strolled through the Quad at 10:30 a.m., a time when tailgaters traditionally converse as the marching band plays the fight song on Hendricks Chapel’s steps. I attended the first football game in the newly renovated Dome and saw the empty seats, heard the fake crowd noise and watched what seemed like an average college football game. I also witnessed the kickoff between Georgia Tech and Syracuse being postponed by 35 minutes to retest three Syracuse football personnel for COVID-19. Though the circumstances were strange, that’s how they should be. Bringing fans back at this moment could impede New York states impressive recovery from the horrific spring. Starting a game with uncertain test results could be catastrophic. Both could also pop Syracuse’s bubble, as the university has kept active COVID-19 cases under 100 for the first five weeks of the semester. As peculiar and contrived as covering a game with no fans was, it was necessary. ... Syracuse Football Cruises Past Georgia Tech on Historical Day Syracuse football beats Georgia Tech, gets first win of season: What they’re saying (PS; $; Owens) The Syracuse football team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday. The renovated Carrier Dome also made its debut -- albeit without a crowd. After struggling in its first two games, the Orange offense showed some life in a 37-20 Atlantic Coast Conference win over Georgia Tech. The defense looked strong as well, with four interceptions -- one returned for a touchdown that will surely end up on the end-of-season highlight reel. Here’s a look at some of the social-media reactions to the win. ... ACC Power Rankings: Syracuse makes big jump after beating Georgia Tech (PS; $; Carlson) The Syracuse football team substantially shifted the perception of its possibilities with Saturday’s win over Georgia Tech. Some struggles from the ACC’s weaker programs made things look brighter still. There are now two ways to look at the Orange’s first three games of the season. Either Syracuse fought fairly well with two good teams on the road and then took care of Georgia Tech, or the Orange has been outgained in three consecutive games (although it did average more yards per play than the Yellow Jackets). You can feel free to pick your level of optimism, but there’s certainly more of it this week. ... ... 10. Boston College Record: 2-0 (1-0) Last week’s ranking: 9 Last week’s result: Win 24-21 vs. Texas State This week’s game: Saturday vs. North Carolina Why No. 10? Boston College needed a last-minute field goal to escape Texas State and its season-opening win looks less impressive with Duke in freefall. This is one shaky unbeaten team. The Eagles also suffered a significant loss this week when Kobay White, who led the team with 29 receptions last year, was ruled out for the season with a torn ACL. 11. Syracuse Record: 1-2 (1-2) Last week’s ranking: 15 Last week’s result: Win 37-20 vs. Georgia Tech This week’s game: Off Why No. 11? Thriving via turnovers is a risky game but the Orange does seem built to maintain a positive ratio and there might be no season filled with more mistakes than this one. Syracuse leads the country, forcing 10 turnovers in three games. The Orange’s 3-3-5 plan thrives on sowing confusion and placing speed on the field. Syracuse’s defensive backs are clearly the strength of this team and, impressively, they remained that way even without injured star Andre Cisco against the Yellow Jackets. ... 4 takeways from Syracuse football's 37-20 win over Georgia Tech - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte) Saturday’s 37-20 win over Georgia Tech was a lot of things for the Syracuse football team. It was a relief just to get in the win column, a chance at redemption for the offense, an opportunity for the defense to face an athletic quarterback who presented a challenge on the ground that the new 3-3-5 alignment had not previously seen, and a showcase for the team’s playmaking defensive backs. The win was good, but how good? 1. The passing offense was better, but… Much maligned after last week’s struggle against Pitt where he was benched, Tommy DeVito bounced back with a pretty good performance against the Yellow Jackets. The highlights, of course, were nearly identical touchdown passes to Taj Harris and Nykeim Johnson streaking down the numbers on the right side. Harris was able to maintain his balance to reach the end zone on his 46-yard grab that was just out in front of him while the 43-yard throw to Johnson was worthy of a painting. The problem, though, is those two passes accounted for 89 of DeVito’s 194 yards through the air as the quarterback connected on just over half his passes (13-of-24) in the game. There were a couple of plays where DeVito airmailed the ball just to get it away and one early drop by Johnson that cost the team a first down, at a minimum, but the team still needs more from its signal-caller. DeVito was under more duress than the one sack he took would suggest (the Jackets were also credited with two quarterback hits and DeVito scrambled on multiple occasions), but this team needs more. ... Goz's Syracuse Football Home Tailgate (1045theteam.com; Goz) For almost my entire life as a sports fan, I have been a Syracuse football fan. For two decades plus my family has been season ticket holders for the Orange (and in the past Orangemen). Even though I moved out here to the Capital Region in 2015, I still do my best to travel west two hours to attend Orange home games and of course the pregame tailgates. My crew that sits in Section 311 continues to put a great tailgate experience each home game. This season like many other football fans, our crew has had to get creative. Below are some photos from our "home tailgate" from this past Saturday Below I left for Syracuse, I had to take a picture of the Syracuse flag that flies from outside my house ... Five turnovers lead Syracuse Football to first win of season (scacchoops.com; De Guzman) Four interceptions and a fumble recovery propelled the Syracuse Orange to its first win of the 2020 season. SU also showed offensive improvements as both sides of the ball contributed to beat Georgia Tech 37-20. Tony White’s 3-3-5 defense continued to excel in pass defense as Syracuse took advantage of turnover-prone rookie quarterback Jeff Sims. Josh Black, Trill Williams, Rob Hanna, and Ja’Had Carter all walked away with an interception on the day. The Orange now have recorded seven picks through the first three games of the season. “I think five defensive takeaways is extremely impressive,” said Dino Babers. “Five takeaways on defense is close to 20-21 points. I give those guys a lot of credit when they can get the ball like that.” Syracuse managed a good defensive game through the air despite the lack of Andre Cisco’s presence. The preseason All-American reportedly collided with Ed Hendrix during pregame warmups and came out of the locker room without pads and in sweats. The Orange defense continued to pressure Sims into uncomfortable situations as well. Seven Syracuse defenders recorded at least one quarterback hit on the Georgia Tech signal caller. Sims’s mobility also prevented ‘Cuse from creating too much havoc, with Cody Roscoe recording the lone sack of the day. The defense continues to shine for the offense even without key players. No Cisco or Eric Coley meant that once again young players needed to step up to contribute. Carter and Hanna topped the tackles list as the secondary depth showed that Cuse can recover from injuries to stars. The only knock on the Syracuse defense was its issue containing the run. Georgia Tech grabbed 275 yards on 52 carries, led by freshman running back Jahmyr Gibbs who had 105 yards on the ground. Multiple Syracuse players missed tackles that allowed runs to go on for more yardage than they should have, which wasn’t a big issue in the first two games of the season. ... Syracuse football rediscovers its offense, and the win column - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte) In the reopening of what may or may not still be the Carrier Dome, Syracuse won a strange game over Georgia Tech, 37-20. After losing ballhawk Andre Cisco for the game during warmups after he collided with a teammate and a 30-minute delay due to confirming the results of some COVID tests, the Orange (1-2, 1-2 ACC) got four interceptions and turned them into 17 points to beat the Yellow Jackets (1-2, 1-1 ACC). The Tech miscues helped SU get a hot start and allowed SU to stay afloat when their offense faltered. Two of those interceptions came in the first quarter, when Syracuse built a 17-0 lead. After each team punted on their opening possession, the Orange ground up 69 yards in six plays, breaking into the end zone on a sensational 38-yard touchdown run by Sean Tucker. When spun down, Tucker narrowly avoided having his knee hit the ground and popped up to complete the run to the end zone. Andre Szmyt booted the extra point and SU held a 7-0 lead just over six minutes into the action. ... Scions Recap Show: Orange Turnover (fromtherumbleseat.com; podcast; Easwaran & Grant) From the Rumble Seat brings you a new way to experience Georgia Tech sports — through your earholes. Through two games, Georgia Tech had shown improvements in offensive efficiency and hoped to build on that progress against a Syracuse team who had been outscored 51-16 in the first two weeks of the season. Progress was halted as Georgia Tech turned the ball over 5 more times, gave up 2 more long pass plays for touchdowns, had a field goal blocked, and committed 15 penalties. The mistakes in this one were obvious, but of course, the point of this column is to dig deeper and see what we can learn. As a reminder, a successful play gains 50% of the needed yards on 1st down, 70% on second down, and 100% on third or fourth down. Once again, GT wins the success rate battle, including both rushing and passing plays. This is reason for some optimism, as all three games have had GT above average in success rate, and in two out of three Gt has held the opponent below average. If I have to pick one metric that gives me some optimism for the rest of the season, it is this one. The running game was quite effective throughout the game; Gibbs was the only runner with below average success rate, but he had a few explosive plays that were huge contributions. Sure, a win was sorely needed for a Syracuse football program staring an 0-3 start right in the eyes. But instead the Orange dug deep and fought back, putting forth a performance Syracuse fans can be proud of as the season moves forward. The Orange raced out to a 17-0 lead behind a pair of Sean Tucker touchdown runs, but quickly watched that lead evaporate, diminishing to only a 3-point lead in the third quarter. However, that's when Tommy DeVito stepped up and fired a pair of touchdown passes, helping the Orange maintain its lead and never look back. The Carrier Dome opened with a victory in 1980, and the victory against GT marked the first time that the Orange have defeated the Yellow Jackets in series history. Prior to kickoff, the game was delayed 30 minutes to ensure negative results from three SU players’ rapid tests. With medical concerns alleviated, the Orange took the field to defend their empty stadium for the first time this season. True freshman running back Sean Tucker exploded onto the scene for the Orange, toting the ball 24 times for 112 yards and two scores. Averaging 59 rushing yards as a team entering the game, Tucker’s output and big-play ability helped to establish a struggling Syracuse offense. Tucker scored the first touchdown of the game for Syracuse by rolling over a would-be tackler and keeping his knees off the turf for a 38-yard rushing touchdown. In the postgame press conference, head coach Dino Babers reminisced on the life of recently deceased NFL Hall of Fame running back Gale Sayers and likened his ability to shake off tacklers and fight for extra yards to Tucker’s performance. “Sean really looked like he was going to run the ball different today,” Babers said. “He came out in the second and third quarter and really did his job.” ... Watch Alton Robinson’s First NFL Sack (SI; Staff) Former Syracuse star Alton Robinson recorded his first NFL sack, and it was a big one. The eye-popping center-hung scoreboard and new sound and lighting systems will provide an enhanced fan experience whenever they can return to the “Loud House.” “It’s amazing,” Syracuse head coach Dino Babers said. “You’re going to love it and it’s going to wow you to death when you get a chance to see it.” The air-supported roof has been replaced by a solid one which will hopefully allow Syracuse University Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer Pete Sala to sleep a little better from November to April without the worry of how much snow is weighing down the bubble. ... ESPN Power Ranking - 9/28/20 (RX; HM) ESPN Power Ranking - 9/28/20 We told you Sunday night that the AP has already begun the slow process to unseat Clemson from the #1 seed so they can send Alabama to the Sugar Bowl (and send Clemson to Pasadena to play Ohio State). That's what Alabama wants, what the SEC wants, what the Sugar and Rose Bowls want - but it isn't fair. Clemson has gotten the short end of the seeding stick just about every year, and they really got raped last season - having to face Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl rather than taking a bus ride to Atlanta to play LSU or Oklahoma in the first round, then getting LSU in New Orleans - the only place on Earth where the Bayou Bengals have won a national championship (which the school claims). Now it's time for ESPN to get into the act. Here is a summary of their Week #4 power rankings, which are favorable to some ACC teams (like the Virginia Tech Hokies) but not so much for the Clemson Tigers. I've added the AP rank for each ACC team, and I've included ESPN's comments for just those teams - if you want to read the rest, click the link below! College football Power Rankings for Week 4 ...while Clemson is still clearly the class of the ACC until proven otherwise, Miami was the big mover in that league thanks to its 52-10 dismantling of Florida State. The Hurricanes moved into the top 10 at No. 7 with a trip to Clemson looming in two weeks. 1. Alabama Crimson Tide (1-0) 2. Ohio State Buckeyes (0-0) 3. Clemson Tigers (2-0; AP #1) ... ... 19. Games against non-FBS teams are excluded. The favorite is listed first with the projected margin of victory (i.e., the line) in parenthesis. 'TP' represents the total number of points expected to be scored in the game and 'Odds' represents the odds of the favorite winning straight-up (not against-the-spread). NOTE: I have changed the HOME teams to uppercase. Best athlete? Best job? See what readers thought was the ‘Best in Syracuse’ (PS; $; Croyle) It is a question that everyone in the Salt City has an answer for: What is the “best of Syracuse?” In 1981, the Syracuse Herald-Journal wanted to know what its readers thought were the best things around town and asked them to mail in a list of their favorites. It included the usual subjects like best pizza, best cup of coffee and best place to take a walk, but also included a host of other topics which create a wonderful snapshot of what our community was like in the early 1980s. Topics like best dressed man or woman, best job, best TV personality, best athlete and (gulp) best places to be mugged were also on the list. More than 1,000 readers submitted responses – there was a “Best of Syracuse” T-shirt on the line for 100 lucky winners and a grand prize weekend getaway for two at one of “Syracuse’s major hotels” - joining "the quest” to find out what the best in Syracuse in 1981. Here are the winners. How many do you remember?: Beat restaurant to take kids to: McDonald’s. The first thing that jumps out about the winners list in the food categories is how prominent national chains were in 1981. The dozen or so local McDonalds was chosen as the best place to take your children to. Best moderately priced restaurant: Ponderosa The buffet-style restaurant was chosen as best place to eat for those on a budget. In 1981, the chain, which the Herald-Journal said, “cuts the steaks and inflation,” had locations in Liverpool, Baldwinsville, North Syracuse and on Erie and Onondaga Boulevard. Best “outrageously expensive” restaurant: Barbuto’s The continental cuisine restaurant, located at Presidential Plaza, had an extensive wine list. Veal was the specialty. Best cup of coffee: Dunkin Donuts No surprise that Syracusans got their daily pick-me-up at Dunkin in 1981 much like today. What is a surprise was that there were only two Dunkins locally. There was a location in North Syracuse and one on South Warren Street. Best hot dog: Heid’s No surprise that the venerable hot dog stand in Liverpool was top dog in 1981. Manager Bob Heid said that “except for the prices, nothing has changed” at Heid’s since its opening in 1916. No surprise here. Heid's was chosen in 1981 as the place to get a hot dog.Syracuse Post-Standard Best salad bar: The Vineyard The winning restaurant staple of the past, the salad bar, was The Vineyard, which had locations in Fairmount, Fayetteville, and DeWitt. Besides the usual salad makings, the lunch buffet included Italian favorites like lasagna, pizza, and meatballs. “After they get through with the salad bar,” Robert Wall, manager of the Fairmount location, “a lot of people can’t finish their entrees.” ...
