Welcome to International Coffee Day!

International Coffee Day is a day that celebrates coffee's journey from the farm to your local shop, and the day is an opportunity to honor the men and women who grow and harvest coffee for the whole world. It was started by the International Coffee Organization (ICO) in 2015. As of 2017 the ICO consisted of 77 member states, and it is the main intergovernmental organization for coffee. The member governments represent 98% of the world's coffee production, and 83% of the world's coffee consumption. The celebration grew from 70 official events in 35 countries in its first year, to 130 events in 54 countries in its second year.

And what is this drink that the whole world seems to value? Coffee, of course! Coffee is a drink made from the roasted and ground beans of the coffee plant. Coffee beans originated in Ethiopia, and arabica beans are the main species, which now are grown throughout the "coffee belt", an area between the latitudes of 25 degrees North and 30 degrees South. Seventy-five percent of the world's coffee bean production is arabica. Most of the other coffee beans are robusta beans, or "Congo coffee" beans, which are more robust.

Beat writer roundtable: Syracuse at a turning point in bye week (DO; Staff)

Through three games, Syracuse appears to be at a turning point in its season. Two blowouts to top-25 teams left the Orange crawling out of the gates, but a dominant 37-20 victory over Georgia Tech gave fans reason for optimism.

With its next two opponents, Duke and Liberty, being weaker on paper, SU can salvage a slow start.

Ahead of the Orange’s bye week, The D.O.’s football beat reporters reflect on where the team stands.

After three games, Syracuse’s defense has continually played strong, but the offense has been underwhelming at times. Do you think Syracuse is as good as its 37-20 win against Georgia Tech, as bad as its 31-6 dud against North Carolina or somewhere in between?

Anthony Dabbundo: There’s a real argument that too many of us, myself included, overreacted to the offense being as bad as it was against two top-25 opponents in the first two games. The Orange will only play two other teams with a defense anywhere near Pitt and UNC the rest of the season. But Syracuse’s offense has to be better than it was against Georgia Tech going forward.

Breaking Down Three Underrated Syracuse Commits (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football's 2021 recruiting class is nearly complete with 21 players. There are lot of players to like in the class, but three in particular seem to be under appreciated nationally. SI All-American's John Garcia Jr. helped us break down why they are good fits for the Orange.

RB JOSH HOUGH

"The reigning Freak of the Week for us at SI All-American," Garcia said. "For those who haven't checked it out, it's basically a kid that makes you do a double take. Whether it comes to his performance or his numbers or a combination of the two, for us it was really an easy call once I saw Mike's tweet, which I think was either Friday or Saturday. I think I quoted you and just said 'What' because he averaged better than 60 yards per carry. He was only tackled in bounds once over four carries...

"I think that's what I like about Josh. He's a big kid. 6-2, 6-3, 230 pounds, there's a bit of an old school vibe to him. Syracuse has done really well with smaller backs or balanced backs. I think Josh provides a true change of pace. Let me tell you, his straight line speed is pretty good for a guy his size."

Syracuse football has prioritized its lines in the 2021 class - The Juice Online (the juice; Auger)

Fresh off an exciting first win of the season against Georgia Tech, the bye week comes at just the right time for Syracuse. Their next two opponents, Duke and Liberty, both appear to be winnable games.

That allows us to look at the recruiting class Syracuse has assembled to this point. And there seems to be a lot to like, especially down in the trenches.

Where’s the Beef?!

The offensive line appears to be an issue three games into the season despite the win against the Yellow Jackets.

But help appears to be on the way.

Syracuse has recruited an entire offensive line with five commits in all.

Enrique Cruz, the highlight of the OL group, is a 4-star recruit from Illinois. Cruz seems primed to be a multi-year starter at left tackle given his 6-foot-5 height and that he currently weighs 252. His frame seems prime to add size and strength without losing his athleticism.

Dino Babers and his staff ventured all the way to Hawaii for Kalan Ellis and Austyn Kauhi.

Ellis is already a mountain of a man. At 6-foot-5 and 350 pounds, the Honolulu native seems ideal to run behind from the guard position. Kauhi, also from Honolulu, is built like Cruz; 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds.

The other two commits are guard Wes Hoeh from Illinois and tackle Tyler Magnuson out of Minneapolis.

All five players are long, standing either 6-foot-4 or 6-foot-5, and lean, except for Ellis. The other four commits all weigh between 250 to 260 pounds. A year or two in the strength and conditioning program will have them all physical ready to handle the rigors of the ACC.

Dan Tortora of "WakeUpCall" welcomes Co-Host & Syracuse Orange CB alum Julian Whigham as they discuss Syracuse's 1st win of the 2020 season, keying in on what worked for the Orange offense & defense in a 37-20 victory over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) for their first ACC W of the 2020 campaign. Julian also asks DT about his experience as one of the few people to be in the Newly-Renovated Dome for the GT @ Syracuse game, the Dome's 1st event since re-opening, getting DT's thoughts & opinions about what it's like to be in there, what stood out, & how the New Dome can help in recruiting for the Orange.

Tommy DeVito Should Throw More Interceptions – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Gross)

Syracuse was up 17-0 on Georgia Tech in the second quarter when Tommy DeVito gave the ball away, so the stat sheet would suggest. It was a 50-50 ball thrown into one-on-one coverage deep downfield. Taj Harris and Zamari Walton both rose up for the football, and the Yellowjackets defensive back came down with it. A wide receiver should never allow an interception on a jump ball. After the game, Dino Babers shared the same assessment.

It was an interception, nonetheless, a sin that DeVito threw a program record 206 passes without committing. Early in the 2019 season, the first-year starter threw four interceptions. Two of them were egregiously reckless, balls that should have been thrown away along the sideline. For the rest of the year, DeVito was no longer reckless, he was safe.

It was, at best, an over adjustment. DeVito became more likely to take a sack than give his receiver a chance downfield. The offensive playcalling was more likely to be a bubble screen on third and long than a five-step drop and a pass downfield. So the interceptions stopped. Was that really a good thing?

Back to last week’s Georgia Tech game: DeVito’s pick, his second of the season, lead to GT’s first touchdown of the game. On the next Syracuse drive, just one offensive snap removed from the interception, DeVito saw Harris streaking down the right sideline again. This time, Harris had a step on the corner, Myles Simms. DeVito could have easily looked it off, remembering what had happened just two snaps ago when he looked to connect with Harris on the go-route.

He had no fear. He took the shot.

With #MLBPlayoffs going on, Rain and Matt decided to do a podcast anyways. They talk to Jacob Payne from Syracuse on Sports Illustrated.

Syracuse Orange Bye Week Blitz (SI; Payne)

The bye week is here for the Syracuse Orange and it arguably could not have come at a better time. Weeks one and two hit Dino Babers’ team like a Kevin McCallister-thrown brick, but a convincing 17-point victory over Georgia Tech last Saturday has given some cause for optimism. With no game coming up this weekend, let’s take this opportunity to press the pause button and evaluate where things stand for Syracuse through the first three weeks of the 2020 season.

BALL-HAWKING SECONDARY

New defensive coordinator Tony White’s 3-3-5 defense has been nothing short of revolutionary. There’s always supposed to be growing pains when installing a new defense. When you toss in the fact players were attempting to learn scheme and positioning over Zoom, expectations were understandably set pretty low. Well, no one told Syracuse’s secondary. Despite facing the two-man, gun-slinger gauntlet of North Carolina’s Sam Howell and Pitt’s Kenny Pickett in the first two games, ‘Cuse’s defense currently ranks 6th or better in the following categories.

STAT AMOUNT/% RANKING

Turnovers Gained101
Passes Intercepted71
Interception Yards1551

Trill Williams was named the ACC Defensive Back of the Week for his standout performance last week. Williams had an interception, converted a defensive lateral into a touch and tacked on five tackles and two pass break-ups.

Top 10 all-time NFL players from Syracuse (NFL.com; photos)

Top 10 all time players in the NFL from Syracuse

ww.cardiachill.com/2020/9/30/21492587/pitt-vs-nc-state-pittsburgh-panthers-odds-betting-gambling-spread-line-preview-football (cardiachill.com; Whaley)

The Pitt football team has been favored in each of its games this season. That trend continues with the Panthers installed as a heavy favorite against NC State on Saturday.

The undefeated Panthers are a 14-point favorite against the Wolfpack. And while that number could move slightly, Pitt is likely to remain about a two-touchdown favorite.

Like the Syracuse game, that number is a bit high for a conference opponent. But after a narrow win against Wake Forest, NC State was beaten badly by three touchdowns by Virginia Tech this past weekend. That, coupled with the strong Pitt defense, seems plenty reason for a large spread.

What do you think of the line?

ACC Football Week 4: Staff Predictions (tarheelblog.com; Hood)

This past Saturday was the first one that felt like a real college football Saturday, and as much as we want to make fun of how superior the SEC thinks it is, their teams coming back finally made for some fun channel surfing as they joined the fray with the ACC and Big XII.

And man, did you find some fun things if you were flipping around. From the National Champions losing in their first time on the field, to a crazy comeback win by the Texas Longhorns, to Kansas State surprising Oklahoma in Norman. The ACC, in comparison, had a pretty blah slate. Only two of the six games were decided by one possession, and one of those games shouldn’t have been that close. Looking at you, Boston College. Louisville and Pitt lived up to their rankings, every other game was a laugher. That doesn’t mean that things went as expected, as Syracuse managed to bite the surging Yellow Jackets in the reopening of the Orangedome, and Virginia Tech shrugged off barely being able to field a team to outright humiliate NC State in the opener for the Hokies.

Signs of conditioning issues concern for some ACC schools :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; AP; Kurz)

Virginia Tech’s twice-delayed season-opener could hardly have started any better.

By the middle of the first quarter, the Hokies led North Carolina State 17-0 despite being without almost two dozen players for COVID-19 and injury-related issues, as well as two assistant coaches. The coronavirus had postponed the start of their season by two weeks.

But then Justin Fuente saw a new challenge, one that coaches throughout the Atlantic Coast Conference, as well as the rest of college football, may have to contend with in the early going: fatigue from a lack of conditioning.

“We got off to a good start. I feel like we kind of lost our wind, which is what I was worried about,” Fuente said after a 45-24 victory. The coronavirus had caused the Hokies to postpone a game with Virginia, pause practice for four days and juggle availabilities.

“We hadn’t played, practice had been limited for the last several weeks. I was really worried about our conditioning and it was pretty evident," Fuente said. “I mean, we got out there, got it rolling pretty quick and then it was like we were out of breath on both sides of the ball."

North Carolina unveiled its plan for football tickets Wednesday and if you’re not a booster club member or a student, you’ll probably end up watching the Tar Heels on television.

UNC has 3,500 tickets for distribution in compliance with the state’s COVID-19 policy that limits stadiums that seat 10,000 or more to have attendance of seven percent its capacity. Kenan Stadium seats 50,500.

The school announced on its website, in an open letter from Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham and Rams Club Executive Director John Montgomery, that because of the limited amount of seats it would not be selling tickets to the general public — or even to season ticket holders who are not Rams Club members at this time.

ACC Power Rankings: Top Teams Solidify Their Spots — The Heights (bcheights.com; Fishman)

NCAA football is approaching its fifth week of action, and the ACC is heading into its third. Already, the conference has grabbed national attention. Five teams sit inside the AP Top 25, with national runner-up Clemson and newly joined Notre Dame coming in at No. 1 and No. 5 respectively. No. 8 Miami, No. 12 North Carolina, and No. 24 Pittsburgh are the three remaining ranked ACC teams. Now that the Big Ten and Pac 12 reversed their postponement of football this fall, powerhouses such as Ohio State and Oregon re-entered the rankings this week. With conference-only play from here on out, it will be a dog fight to the very end to the College Football Playoff.
...
...
9. Louisville (1-2, 0-2 Atlantic Coast) ↓3

Despite a close loss to ranked Pitt, the Cards now fall to 0-2 in the ACC and fall in the rankings—both ACC and AP—as a result. The good news for the Cardinals, though, is that they travel to Atlanta to face one of the ACC’s bottom feeders, Georgia Tech. Barring an upset, Louisville will look to get back on the upswing.

10. NC State (1-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast) ↓3

Following a shootout victory against Wake Forest, the Wolfpack fell to Virginia Tech by three scores. It doesn’t get easier for them, as they travel to Pittsburgh for a noon showdown against the ranked Panthers.

11. Syracuse (1-2, 1-2 Atlantic Coast) ↑4

The Orange were blown out in their opener against UNC and followed it with a quality loss to Pitt on the road. ’Cuse finally has a check in the win column after last week, with a victory over Georgia Tech for Dino Barbers and his squad. Up next is a bye week, then Syracuse takes on Duke at home.

On 2nd Thought: 2020 Week 5 TV Schedule (RX; HM)

On 2nd Thought: 2020 Week 5 TV Schedule

Comments on Week Five's TV schedule:

1. The UNC/BC game was in competition with the Oklahoma State/Kansas game to see which would be on ABC and which would be relegated to ESPN in the 3:30 PM TV time slot. The Eagles' home game against the Tar Heels won that contest, thus becoming the 6th ACC game of the young season carried on the ABC broadcast network. Not that I'm saying ESPN is bad - by no means - but ABC (free TV) is definitely better!

2. This week is a prime example of how the remnants of the old Raycom deal (now in the form of a sub-license to Sinclair-owned former Fox RSNs) is hurting the ACC. The ACC Network needs a triple-header pretty much every week of football season to keep up the value of the channel. Since the RSNs are getting the Florida State game, it can't be shown on the ACCN - which means the UVA/Clemson game ended up being pulled onto the ACC Network when it probably should be on ESPN or ESPN2.

3. Someone tweeted that this might be the worst weekend of the season for ACC football match-ups. He may have a point. Besides two games against FCS opponents, you have what, on paper at least, look like four total mismatches in conference play. Now, I've watched ACC football for a long time, so I know what will actually happen: one of those underdogs will rise up and bite one of the contenders - maybe not beating them, but certainly pushing them much harder than expected. It's the #GoACC way.

Worst Teams of Week 4, 2020? (RX; HM)

Worst Teams of Week 4, 2020?

Here are two "bottom" lists...
__________

College football rankings: LSU joins The Bottom 25 a season after winning the national title

CBS Sports "BOTTOM 25"
25. Louisville (1-2) The Cardinals were a trendy pick in the ACC before the season began, but they're now 0-2 in conference play after losing to Pitt on Saturday. That was the first of what will be three straight games on the road. After a bye this week, the Cardinals will return to face No. 19 Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Then it's Notre Dame in South Bend, so they might want to win that Georgia Tech game.
24. North Texas
23. Texas State
22. Georgia State
21. South Alabama
20. South Carolina

19. Georgia Tech (1-2) Georgia Tech's win over Florida State gets less impressive by the day, doesn't it? Since that game, the Yellow Jackets have dropped two straight to UCF and Syracuse, losing by 45 points combined. They are off this week before coming back home to take on No. 25 Louisville.

18. Syracuse (1-2) Speaking of Syracuse, it beats Georgia Tech by 17 and is still ahead of it in The Bottom 25. Math can be fun sometimes, kids. Still, the Orange did drop 15 spots. They're off this week as well before returning home for another winnable game against No. 6 Duke

He fought Syracuse over a 17-year-old parking ticket and won. He keeps better records (PS; $; Knauss)

Remember when banks used to return your canceled checks with your monthly bank statement? Frank Muraco Jr. does. He still has a box full of them.

So when the city of Syracuse came after Muraco for a 17-year-old parking ticket, he was able to dig out his personal check from December 2003 and prove that he had paid the $35 fine. He faxed a copy to City Hall last week.

Muraco, a Manlius property manager, was one of 110,000 people who got collection notices last month for old Syracuse parking tickets, some dating back as far as 1997. The letters, which offered to dismiss late fees for people who paid by Sept. 25, spurred thousands to pay up. But many others, like Muraco, reacted with disbelief.

City Hall was flooded with phone calls and emails from people with questions or disputes about the old tickets. They are still working their way through the complaints. Finally, on Wednesday, after Muraco sent in his canceled check a second time, his debt was cleared.

“The city received Mr. Muraco’s payment back in 2003, but his account was not properly credited,” Chief Policy Officer Greg Loh told syracuse.com in an email. "We’ve corrected the error.''

Loh said city officials would send Muraco an apology.
