Welcome to Pulled Pork Day!

Pork. Cooked. Slowly. Celebrate this classic Texas-style dish on National Pulled Pork Day. And bring along your favorite barbecue sauce! Fun fact: Back in 2016, Sonny’s BBQ set the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Serving of Pulled Pork” — a hefty 2,012 pounds of this dish. Eventually, Sonny’s decided — along with other BBQ industry members — to designate October 12 as National Pulled Pork Day. So no matter what your sauce preferences may be — tomato-based, mustard-based, vinegar-based, etc. — just be sure to slather it on to help celebrate.

Liberty earns Top 25 votes for first time in program history (247sports.com; Weinstein)

It has been a wacky season in college football so far, and that means more Group of Five schools than usual feature in the Top 25. Until the Big Ten and Pac-12 return to action later this fall, a number of voters are only ranking teams that have actually played at least one game to this point.

For instance, Cincinnati ranks No. 8 in the Associated Press poll while BYU, SMU and Louisiana are also in the Top 25. Marshall was the first team left out, and Tulsa, UCF and Coastal Carolina aren’t far behind.

Liberty, an independent program, also received eight points in the AP poll. That’s significant, as the Flames have never received a single point in the AP poll in program history prior to Sunday according to RedditCFB.

Liberty, of course, is led by former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze. The Flames are off to a 4-0 start with wins over Western Kentucky, FIU, North Alabama and Louisiana-Monroe. There are four big tests left for Liberty on its schedule, starting next week at Syracuse — the Flames will also play road games against Virginia Tech, NC State and Coastal Carolina.

Axe: 2020 caught up with Syracuse football. So what now? (PS; $; Axe)

It feels like 2020 has given all of us an uppercut to the jaw at some point, so it was only a matter of time before Syracuse Football was due for one.

Duke delivered what could be the knockout blow for the 2020 season on Syracuse in a 38-24 win over the Orange on Saturday at the Carrier Dome.

The Blue Devils ran over, around and through Syracuse, piling up 363 rushing yards and a total of 645 yards on the way to its first win of the season.

Syracuse head coach Dino Babers must feel like he was looking over the remnants of the Battle of Stirling after Saturday’s game as a significant number of players who started the game for his team didn’t finish it due to injury.

At least the Scottish still had William Wallace when it was all said and done. Syracuse is losing key contributors at an alarming rate, including its most important players on offense and defense.

Starting quarterback Tommy DeVito is likely out for the season after sustaining a serious lower-body injury against Duke.

It's time to shift expectations for Syracuse in 2020 (column) (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football came into preseason camp this fall with aspirations of bouncing back from a disappointing 5-7 finish in Year 4 of the Dino Babers era. The margin for error, though, with two new coordinators and a truncated offseason due to the coronavirus pandemic, was always going to be slim.

Babers was reminded of this each time he saw a player weighing his option to sit out this season, and each time he pulled over a defensive player to fill in another injury-induced void on the offensive line. Everything had to go right for the Orange (1-3, 1-3) to come out above .500 against a revised schedule that featured two road games to open the year, zero cupcakes and a pair of national contenders in Clemson and Notre Dame.

Four contests in, SU's sliver of hope to chase the 10 wins it achieved in 2018 has been exhausted. Syracuse lost arguably its best player in junior All-American safety Andre Cisco to injury during a fluke collision before beating Georgia Tech 37-20 on Sept. 26. Then it lost perhaps its most irreplaceable player in redshirt junior quarterback Tommy DeVito on a sack during the fourth quarter of a 38-24 loss to Duke on Saturday. Babers' hurry-up offense has ground to a halt with starting running back Jawhar Jordan also on the shelf, leaving Tony White's 3-3-5 defense to play over 100 snaps against the Blue Devils despite forcing four turnovers.

All Three Phases Share Blame in Syracuse's Loss to Duke (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse fell to 1-3 on the season after a 38-24 defeat at the hands of the Duke Blue Devils. Duke entered the game 0-4 and led the nation in turnovers. Syracuse took advantage with four forced turnovers in the game, but it was not enough to knock off the Blue Devils inside the Dome.

Syracuse had several blunders in this game that contributed to the loss, with each of the three phases playing a part.

OFFENSE

Syracuse managed just 286 yards of offense, 132 of which came on their two offensive touchdowns. Other than those two players, Syracuse had 154 yards on 50 plays, or 3.08 yards per play. They simply could not sustain drives. There were a variety of factors in this.

Inconsistency running the ball prevented offensive balance. The offensive line had its share of struggles in that area. Quarterback Tommy DeVito was the victim of key drops, some of which came on third down. The failure to make catches on third downs were a factor in the inability to continue drives. That also were part of the reason for seven three and outs in 13 offensive possessions, and why Syracuse was just 2-12 on third downs.

Video: David Cutcliffe Duke vs Syracuse Post Game Press Conference | Carolina Blitz (carolinablitz.com; video)

Duke head football coach David Cutcliffe discusses 38-24 win over Syracuse.

Duke overcomes turnovers, beats Syracuse 38-24 (AP; Kekis)

Extra point vs. Syracuse: Duke runs through the Orange, picks up first win (dukechronicle.com; Hurewitz)

Saturday marked Duke's first win of the season, and it won the game in a dominant fashion. A strong run game and stout defense allowed the Blue Devils to beat Syracuse in the Carrier Dome. The Blue Zone breaks down yesterday's contest with three takeaways, stats and what to look for moving forward.

Three Key Takeaways

1. Big rushing day

Saturday was a great day to be a running back wearing Duke’s road whites. The Blue devils tallied 363 rushing yards, nearly doubling its season total from before the game. The rushing threat of Deon Jackson and Mataeo Durant became evident early, with the pair racking up 150 yards in the first quarter alone. Each set career-highs in yardage thanks to Duke’s effective blocking at the line and further downfield. Two bursts of 40-plus yards put a strain on Syracuse’s defense, flipping the script from Duke’s previous games in which it was the opponents who gained chunk yardage. In spite of the two passing touchdowns, Duke really didn’t need much from Chase Brice.

2. Brice's starting job continues to be examined

If it wasn’t obvious from his performance so far this season, Chase Brice has not met expectations. For that reason, Cutcliffe made a sudden but unsurprising quarterback switch when the Blue Devils trailed 14-10 early in the second quarter. Redshirt sophomore Gunnar Holmberg entered the game to give Chase Brice a break after getting clobbered on a sack-fumble touchdown on the previous drive, and Holmberg performed well. He ran the ball four times for 9 yards and completed his first career pass to Jalon Calhoun. Before Duke could continue plowing downfield, Holmberg and the Blue Devils lost possession of the football after a fake handoff on a quarterback option. Brice re-entered the game on the next drive, but we may be seeing more of Holmberg soon.

Syracuse football 2021 RB commit Josh Hough is an absolute stud (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football 2021 RB commit Josh Hough has put forth another ridiculously impressive stat line.

Syracuse football recruit Josh Hough, a talented running back in the 2021 class for the Orange, is compiling some awfully gaudy numbers so far in his senior season of high school.

According to his Twitter page, Hough on Friday night had just six carries for 205 rushing yards and three touchdowns. That’s a monster 34.2 yards per attempt.

Hough’s team, Beaver Falls High School, defeated Mohawk Junior/Senior High School on Friday night by a count of 49-14. That result moved Beaver Falls High School, which is located in Beaver Falls, Pa., to a perfect 5-0 to date in the fall term.

On top of this latest stellar performance by Hough, in another recent game for the Syracuse football commit, he registered 243 rushing yards and three touchdowns on a mere four carries, which is amazing and almost unthinkable.

Another great team win ! 6 carries 205 yds 3 tds #fallztown #agtg Mohawk Area High School
— (@JoshHough5) October 10, 2020
These statistics that the 6-foot-2, 235-pound Hough is tallying hopefully are getting Orange fans excited about this young man’s future in Central New York.

Here's how Syracuse football can rebound against Liberty - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Hopefully, the bad news for the Syracuse football team will slow to a pace less than the leak discovered in the new ceiling at the former Carrier Dome a couple hours after Saturday’s 38-24 loss to previously winless Duke. The loss dropped the Orange to 1-3 on the season and, with adding quarterback Tommy DeVito’s name to the list of injured starters, adds an extra dash of urgency to next week’s matchup with Liberty.

SU pitched a 24-0 shutout in defeating the Flames in last season’s opener. That Liberty group ended up finishing the season 8-5 overall and this year’s version stands 4-0, although their schedule to this point looks less like a “who’s who” and more like a “who?” The Flames’ opponents to this point have mustered one win on the season, so their record may not reflect their true level of play.

Of course, with Syracuse now short their opening day quarterback, running back (Jawhar Jordan), and a pair of defensive backs (Andre Cisco and Eric Coley), even what looks like a lesser foe on paper is a lot more dangerous. Rex Culpepper looks to be a full-time starter for the first time and will be taking snaps behind a shaky offensive line while surrounded by questionable skill position talent. The defense is also coming off its worst performance of the season, having been gouged for 670 yards by Duke, including 388 on the ground.

With a battered roster, SU football turns toward the future (stock watch) (PS; $; Axe)

Syracuse football is 1-3 following a 38-24 loss against Duke on Saturday at the Carrier Dome.

This week’s stock watch takes a look at the players and themes rising and falling heading into the next opponent, which will be Liberty (4-0) next week at the dome.

Stock up: Freshmen, seniors, transfers: It’s not too early to think about the future

The wave of freshmen seeing the field, some since Day 1, some out of necessity, bodes well as SU tries to build up its depth for future seasons.

It doesn’t have much else to hang its hat on right now: The roster is battered. The lineup it had in March has been cast aside by the coronavirus, injuries and an NCAA ruling that went the wrong way.

ACC Football 2020, Week 6 (10/9-10/10/20) (cardiachill.com; HM)

Here’s your overview of scores with commentary for this week’s ACC football action...

Saturday, Oct. 10th, 2020

Early Games

NC State Wolfpack 38 at Virginia Cavaliers 21

The NC State defense held Virginia to just four of 18 on third down (22%) and took the ball away four times as the Wolfpack beat the Cavaliers in Charlottesville, VA.

Next up for NC State: Duke
Next up for UVA: at Wake Forest
__________

#19 Virginia Tech Hokies 45 at #12 North Carolina Tar Heels 56

The Hokies had 495 yards of offense, five minutes more in time of possession, no turnovers, and recovered an onside kick - and still lost! That’s because without most of their defensive backfield VT was simply unable to stop the Tar Heels, who managed a whopping 656 yards of offense themselves.

Next up for UNC: at Florida State
Next up for VT: Boston College
__________

Duke Blue Devils 38 at Syracuse Orange 24

Duke’s offense still gave away some points, but they scored enough to overcome it this time. For Syracuse, inability to generate a running attack continues to limit the offense.

Next up for Duke: at NC State
Next up for Syracuse: Liberty

ACC Round Up and Power Rankings - Week 5 (fromtherumbleseat.com; Cramer)

The ACC, except for Clemson, decided to leave the defenses at home this week with five teams scoring over forty points and only Miami scoring less than twenty. Three teams had two backs break 100 yards as well. Clemson, UNC, and Notre Dame remain undefeated in conference play while Wake, Louisville, and FSU have yet to notch a win.

@Georgia Tech 46 Louisville 27

The Yellow Jackets fell behind by fourteen late in the second quarter but responded quickly with a trick play to pull within seven going into halftime. Louisville would cough up the multiple times in the second half and Tech would capitalize with a great performance from Jeff Sims and Jahmyr Gibbs. Read the full recap here.

@North Carolina 56 Virginia Tech 45

The Tar Heels put on an offensive show with 656 total yards. Michael Carter led the charge with 214 yards rushing and Jevonte Williams assisted with another 169 rushing. Virginia Tech racked up the points but they came after letting UNC gain a lead. The Hokies would get within one possession but the defense allowed UNC two touchdowns on back-to-back drives in the fourth.

Duke 38 syracuse 24

Duke claimed its first win of the season by limiting Syracuse to only 28 yards on the ground while producing 363 themselves. Chase Brice also had his best day of the season with 270 yards passing and two touchdowns. Syracuse struggled to gain any yardage on multiple drives and lost Tommy Devito to an injury in the fourth quarter that may sideline him for the remainder of the year.

DeWitt dad delivers baby on side of Interstate 481: ‘It all happened so magically’ (PS; House)

Vincent Ramirez was born in his parents' car on the side of Interstate 481.

He was minutes away from the Syracuse hospital where he was due to be delivered. But he didn’t want to wait, his dad joked.

The baby boy’s fast entrance into the world started the dark, very early morning of Sept. 18.

Vanessa Ramirez woke up her husband, Abel Ramirez González, around 1 a.m. when her water broke. They got ready quickly, left their DeWitt home and headed for Crouse Hospital, the dad said. Since Vincent was the couple’s third child, he said they thought they knew what to expect.

As his wife labored, Abel, 24, drove on Interstate 481 south toward Syracuse. Vanessa, 34, used her phone to track her contractions.

Then, as they neared Interstate 81, Vanessa was hit by a contraction too big to time.

The couple was just two exits away from the hospital. But Vanessa had already brought two babies into the world, Abel said, and she knew there wasn’t time to wait. So Vanessa unbuckled her seat belt, tossed her phone and gave her husband an order:

The baby is coming. Stop the car.
