Welcome to National M&M Day!

When Forrest Mars, Sr., son of Mars candy company founder Frank C. Mars., was in Spain during the 1930s, he came across a candy being eaten by British volunteer soldiers taking part in the Spanish Civil War. It consisted of chocolate pellets with hard tempered chocolate shells—shells that helped keep the candy from melting. Mars used this candy as a model for M&M's, which he thought would be ideal to sell during the warmer months. We celebrate and enjoy his creation today, on National M&M Day!

When Mars came back to the United States, he reached out to Bruce Murrie, son of William Murrie, an executive at Hershey. He thought there may be a shortage of chocolate as World War II started and that by partnering with Murrie it could be guaranteed that there would be no shortage of supplies for his candy. Murrie and Mars became partners, Murrie was given a 20% stake in the company, and the candy was named M&M's in their honor.

ACC Power Rankings: Duke loss and mounting injuries send Syracuse football plummeting (PS; Carlson)

The Syracuse football team’s season took a sharp downturn over the weekend as the Orange were beaten up by Duke, losing a game and key players in one of the games on its schedule that looked easiest to win.
It’s hard to imagine the Orange thriving the rest of the way given the weaknesses the team has already displayed and the injuries it has now absorbed.

The big questions remaining are probably just how much Syracuse can salvage from this year, how its young players come along and whether the Orange can avoid finishing at the bottom of the conference.

1. Clemson
Record: 4-0 (3-0 ACC)
Last week’s ranking: 1
Last week’s result: Win 42-17 vs. Miami
This week’s game: Saturday at Georgia Tech

Why No. 1? Clemson showcased just how big the gap in the ACC is by dominating the league’s marquee game and one of the few ACC teams that looked like it might have the horses to be competitive.

Clemson really has the best QB and RB in College Football

Along with showcasing two Heisman favorites on offense, the Tigers also sacked Miami quarterback D’Eriq King more than he had been in the previous three games combined (4-3) and intercepted him (twice) for the first time all season.

2. Notre Dame
Record: 3-0 (2-0)

Orange Watch: 2020 has created unique challenges for Syracuse football - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: From having only three spring practices, restrictions with summer training, interruptions to pre-season practice, a condensed schedule of virtually all ACC games, and now an injury list a mile long, head coach Dino Barbers is encountering a season like no other in his long career.

Let’s take a capsule review at what the Syracuse football team has faced and/or will encounter since the season debuted a month ago:

  • The two returning running backs with the most experience (Abdul Adams and Jarveon Howard) opted out of the COVID-19 stricken season severely deleting depth at the position.
  • A talented and much-needed offensive line transfer from Florida (Chris Bleich) was denied immediate NCAA eligibility.
  • The defensive back with the most interceptions among current FBS players (Andre Cisco) accidentally collided with a teammate in pre-game warmups before the home opener, suffered an undisclosed injury and is out for the season.
  • The starting quarterback (Tommy Devito), seemingly scrambling in circles against every opponent while playing behind a depleted offensive line, finally succumbed to a serious injury and is likely out for the season.
  • Last Saturday, Syracuse fell at home by two touchdowns to a winless ACC opponent (Duke) to drop its record to 1-3.
  • The next opponent (Liberty) in just its second season as a full FBS program, and a team the Orange shutout last year on the road, is a current 3.5-point favorite to beat the ‘Cuse in the Dome this Saturday.

Syracuse Football Slammed by Injuries (SI; Payne)

Syracuse Orange head football coach Dino Babers has not yet confirmed the status of starting quarterback Tommy DeVito. DeVito was helped off the field during the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game against Duke after succumbing to his fifth sack of the afternoon. The redshirt junior was later seen on crutches.

“So basically, there's no update,” Babers said Monday during his weekly press availability. “I’ve got to get back to the medical people, OK, and see where we're at. But I would leave that exactly the way I left it after the game.”

Following Saturday’s 38-24 loss to the Blue Devils, Babers said in reference to DeVito’s injury “it's not good.”

“We're all pulling for him and we wish him the best, but, like I said, right now, it's not good.”

All Syracuse on Sports Illustrated publisher Michael McAllister reported Saturday evening that “according to two sources, DeVito is out for the season with a leg injury.”

When asked about these reports, Babers said he was not aware of them. What he did hint at, however, was some more definitive rulings for other injured players.

Dino Babers discusses Tommy DeVito’s injury, future of Syracuse's offense (DO; Hillman)

Head coach Dino Babers doesn’t know how long Tommy DeVito will be absent. The redshirt junior quarterback left Saturday’s game against Duke with a lower left leg injury. He was seen on the sideline in a boot and needed crutches to maneuver around the field.

DeVito’s injury is one of many for the Orange, including All-American safety Andre Cisco and starting running backs Jawhar Jordan and Sean Tucker. Babers confirmed Monday that Cisco will miss the remainder of the 2020 season. Cisco suffered an ACL injury, a source with direct knowledge of the situation told The Daily Orange.

Entering a matchup against undefeated Liberty, SU will not change its identity, Babers said. Instead, the Orange will focus on tackling and toughness. Various underclassmen are filling starting roles, and SU may be without its original starting quarterback, running back, guard, middle linebacker and two safeties.

“When you’re playing a pure ACC schedule, the injuries mount up,” Babers said. “The heart is there, the speed is there, but the physicality is something you have to match. That’s not an excuse. We have to dig down deep and find a way to match it.”

Do you prefer the early starting times for SU football games? (poll) (PS; $; poll; Miller)

The Syracuse University football game against top-ranked Clemson will kick off at noon Oct. 24. That’ll be the sixth straight early starting time for Orange games this season.

Saturday’s home game against undefeated Liberty is also scheduled for noon. The injury-riddled SU team is 1-3 heading into the game.

As of today, the only night game on the 2020 schedule is Nov. 20 at Louisville, which is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. The Dec. 5 game at Notre Dame will start at 2:30 p.m.

Do you prefer early kickoffs for SU football games? Take the poll:

Yes, the earlier the better
No, mid-afternoon is best
No, nighttime is prime time
I'd watch SU anytime

Duke football finally grabs victory in offensive explosion against Syracuse (balldurham.com; Connelly)

FINAL

DUKE BLUE DEVILS 38
SYRACUSE ORANGE 24

The Duke football team finally won a football game in 2020 against the Syracuse Orange.

“….and it’s sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet victory….”

Alright, perhaps that was a bit overdramatic, but if you have watched the Duke Blue Devils play football this season, you too would celebrate its first victory of the season in emphatic fashion.

Granted, we at Ball Durham were unable to watch the Duke vs. Syracuse game in real-time, but thanks to the help of recordings, we have now watched the entire victory for the Blue Devils and are ready to discuss.

In our pregame preview, we mentioned this one had a great chance to be an offensive explosion given the holes in both defenses and the strong offensive play by Duke late in its loss against Virginia Tech.

And that’s exactly what happened.

David Cutcliffe pressed all the right buttons on offense, and despite four turnovers from the Blue Devils, Duke still pulled away from Syracuse with a 38-24 victory.

The running game was working to perfection for Duke on Saturday, and to Cutcliffe’s credit, he stuck with it as Duke combined for 363 rushing yards and two touchdowns, spearheaded by 169 yards on 30 carries for Deon Jackson and 163 yards and two touchdowns from Mataeo Durant.

Chase Brice also ran for 18 yards, but the signal-caller, who secured his first win as a starting quarterback, completed 22-of-38 passes for 270 yards, two touchdowns, an interception, and a fumble.

Liberty football embracing the expectations entering showdown at Syracuse (wset.com; Walls)

The Liberty Flames are starting to turn some heads around the country, with their 4-0 record, and a showdown against Syracuse set for Saturday at noon.

The Flames received 8 points from the AP Top 25 poll - the first time the Flames have registered any votes in the national poll. That point total lands them ahead of teams like LSU, Texas, and Virginia. The early lines for Saturday's game at Syracuse (12:00pm kickoff) have Liberty as a slight favorite, and coach Hugh Freeze says he's excited to see how his team responds to that challenge, saying "There are people that are actually expecting us to compete. That's an expectation we embrace, and we're excited about. Are we worthy of it? I don't know, but we're going to give it our best shot."

The picture isn't quite as clear for Syracuse. The Orange defeated Liberty in the 2019 season opener at Williams Stadium, but coach Dino Babers is trying to put the pieces back together in 2020. Reeling after a loss to Duke last week, the Orange sit at just 1-3, and now without QB Tommy Devito and preseason All-American Andre Cisco at safety, both lost for the season to injury. As for a rematch against the Flames, Babers says his team is in for a tougher challenge than 2019, saying "I think they're better. They've got (Malik Willis at QB) now , a very, very talented athlete. He has a strong arm and very explosive legs – they use him in the run game. They have a tailback that's really good, he runs behind his pads really well and they have an explosive receiver. They are a complete football team and they are very athletic."

Liberty can take a massive step forward this week at Syracuse (aseaofred.com; Manson)

Liberty has won six games in a row. It’s the program’s longest winning streak as an FBS member and longest since 2011.

Those wins have come against New Mexico State, Georgia Southern, Western Kentucky, Florida International, North Alabama, and Louisiana-Monroe. Not exactly a murderer’s row of opponents, sure, but it represents real, tangible progress for a program that lost to St. Francis, Monmouth, and Charleston Southern just three years ago.

For a school as young as Liberty and being the newest member of the FBS, the quickest way to national prominence is one step at a time.

A giant leap forward presents itself this week.

Hugh Freeze’s team, receiving 8 votes in the Coaches Top 25 and Associated Press Top 25 Poll, heads to New York to face 1-3 Syracuse.

Liberty has never beaten an ACC team, falling in the team’s first eight tries, losing by an average score of 39.1-18.1. This includes Liberty’s 24-0 shutout loss at home in last year’s season opener against the Orange.

Vegas currently has Liberty as a 2.5-point favorite.

At this point in Liberty’s program, anytime the Flames face a Power Five opponent it will be a big opportunity, but this game has much more riding on it than any previous matchup against a P5 school. With each win the stakes grow larger for the Flames.

With apologies to the previous eras, this is Liberty’s biggest game ever.

Who You Callin' Sprawlin? (RX; HM)

Who You Callin' Sprawlin?

Here are the geographic footprints of the five "power" conferences:

From "Geography of College Sports" on CSNBBS:

"I found the geographic center of all the schools in a conference and averaged the distance (as the crow flies) to the center for the schools to determine how geographically compact each conference is... using the expected alignments for the 2021-22 season"
Distances from Geographic Center of each P5
Conf.Avg DistanceClosestFurthest
SEC278.9 milesAlabamaTexas AM
ACC279.3 milesWake ForestMiami
B1G283.8 milesPurdueRutgers
XII333.2 milesOklahoma StWest Virginia
Pac454.0 milesUtahColorado

OBSERVATIONS:
The ACC is often criticized for being too spread out (Boston to Miami, Atlantic Ocean to Louisville), but we see from this table that it's only 0.4 miles further (on average) than the SEC and actually more compact than the Big Ten (the Big XII and Pac-12 aren't even in the race). Yes, it's a long way from Miami to Boston or from Tallahassee to Syracuse - but those teams don't play each other every week! Let's look at the distances* for some of the more commonly-played pairings:

The Only ACC Power Rankings That Matter: The new version of 'Clemsoning' :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsports.com; Giglio)

The old version of "Clemsoning" was a negative connotation for the Tigers.

It was their propensity for losing a game (usually in the ACC), they shouldn't. A 37-13 loss at NC State in Nov. 2011 is the last recorded incident of "Clemsoning." Coach Dabo Swinney has since killed that concept.

But there might be a new form of "Clemsoning." The teams in the Atlantic Division already understand this: it’s not just what happens when you play the Tigers (you lose) but what happens the next week, too.

The new definition of “Clemsoning,” in YP form pic.twitter.com/YcwLuZh0iC

— Joe Giglio (@YellowPadStats) October 12, 2020

The Tigers have won five straight ACC titles since the start of the 2015 season and amassed a 41-2 ACC regular-season record. Not including the five additional wins in the ACC championship game, that’s 14 league wins clear of the second-best ACC team (Miami) over the same span.

As the Hurricanes’ 42-17 loss at Clemson proved again on Saturday night — in a matchup of alleged top-10 teams — there’s no other ACC team in Clemson’s class (yes, yes, I hear you Notre Dame and UNC fans).

ACC football recruiting: Expectations and reality (theathletic.com; $; Wasserman & Olson)

Reasonable expectations: Top-60 classes

The data: A 10-win season like Syracuse enjoyed in 2018 is usually what it takes to vault your recruiting efforts to another level. That hasn’t really been the case so far, at least not by the recruiting industry’s measures. Dino Babers’ 2019 and 2020 classes finished 57th and 58th, respectively. That’s consistent with the average ranking (56th) of the recruiting classes during Babers’ tenure. The class the Orange are working on now is nearly full and ranks 46th. If they can maintain that, this would be their first top-50 ranked class since 2007, though they did come close in 2018 (51st). This staff has brought a lot of speed into the program, and Babers’ offensive philosophy gives them a chance to win battles for quality quarterbacks and skill players.

The outlook: What will it take to elevate Syracuse’s classes beyond their norm? Sustained success is the obvious answer, and investing in upgrades to their facilities and the Carrier Dome may be a factor as well. Babers argued this offseason that they’ve needed to alter their strategy, too.
