Welcome to INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY!!!

EVERYONE IS TO PUT THE CAPS LOCK ON BEFORE TYPING ON INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY, A DAY THOUGHT UP BY DEREK ARNOLD OF IOWA IN 2000. HE STARTED THE DAY AS A PARODY, TO TAKE A JAB AT THOSE WHO WRITE IN CAPS WHEN IT IS NOT NECESSARY. WRITING IN ALL CAPS IS OFTEN USED TO INDICATE THAT THE PERSON TYPING IS SHOUTING, AND ITS USE IS OFTEN SEEN AS BEING RUDE OR ANNOYING. BEING THAT CAPS LETTERS ARE ALL THE SAME HEIGHT, THEY ARE HARDER TO READ THAN LOWER CASE LETTERS. THIS GIVES ONE INDICATION OF WHY THEY MAY BE SEEN AS BEING ANNOYING. THE DAY WAS ORIGINALLY JUST CELEBRATED ON OCTOBER 22, BUT AFTER "INFOMERCIAL KING" BILLY MAYS PASSED AWAY ON JUNE 28 IN 2009, THE DAY BEGAN BEING CELEBRATED ON THAT DATE AS WELL. THIS IS BECAUSE THE CAPS LOCK KEY STARTED BEING CALLED THE BILLY MAYS KEY BECAUSE BILLY MAYS SEEMED LIKE HE WAS ALWAYS YELLING WHEN HE TALKED ABOUT A PRODUCT.

KEYBOARDS HAVE NOT ALWAYS HAD A CAPS LOCK KEY. UPPER AND LOWER CASE LETTERS WERE ADDED TO THE REMINGTON NO.2 TYPEWRITER IN 1878. A SHIFT KEY WAS ALSO ADDED, WHICH HAD TO BE PRESSED DOWN TO SWITCH BETWEEN THE CASES. THE SHIFT LOCK, INTRODUCED IN 1914 ON THE REMINGTON JUNIOR TYPEWRITER, MADE IT EASIER TO TYPE MULTIPLE CAPITAL LETTERS AT A TIME. THE FIRST COMPUTER WITH A CAPS LOCK KEY WAS THE XEROX ALTO, RELEASED IN 1973. IBM INTRODUCED THE MODEL M KEYBOARD IN 1984; IT STANDARDIZED MANY KEYS, INCLUDING THE CAPS LOCK KEY. MOST KEYBOARDS STILL USE THIS LAYOUT, AND ALMOST ALL KEYBOARDS HAVE CAPS LOCK KEYS.

Beat writers unanimously predict Syracuse loss to No. 1 Clemson this Saturday (DO; Staff)

Coming off a loss against Liberty that represented a new low this season, Syracuse (1-4, 1-3 Atlantic Coast) will travel to Death Valley to face No. 1 Clemson (5-0, 4-0) at 12 p.m. on Saturday.

The Tigers just thrashed Georgia Tech — the only team the Orange have beaten this season — by a score of 73-7.

Here’s what our beat writers think will happen on Saturday:

Anthony Dabbundo (3-2)
Missing evidence
Clemson 59, Syracuse 7

After Syracuse defeated then-No. 2 Clemson 27-24 in 2017, Dino Babers no longer needed to ask for belief without evidence in his ability to turn the Syracuse program around, at least temporarily. The Orange beat Clemson that night, and they should have beaten them the next year.

Babers has provided much less evidence that he can sustain a winning program through recruiting, and many are losing belief. The Orange are spiraling downward, perhaps even lower than they were in 2015.

Clemson will choose how many points they score in this one, and the game will be over long before halftime. The Orange’s fans will get a good final look at Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence in college (for a half) before he’s potentially playing for a New York team on Sundays next year.

Why Syracuse Will Win
At least head coach Dino Babers received a vote of confidence through 2021 and beyond.
The Orange are dominating the turnover battle. For a team that needs as much help as possible and as many breaks as it can get, generating 16 takeaways and being a nation-leading +11 in turnover margin is everything.
Obviously Syracuse is undermanned, but under Babers, the program beat Clemson in 2017, had the game won in 2018 until an amazing Tiger comeback, and in 2019 was flattened 41-6. Keep that last part in mind later.
Clemson isn’t totally perfect.

The special teams blocking has been a tad shaky, the secondary will give up yards down the field from time to time, and …

Why Clemson Will Win
Clemson has been close to perfect.
Any and all complaints so far are about not being just a wee bit better at times. Maybe the ground game wasn’t great against Virginia, and the Wake Forest passing attack worked a little too well, and allowing a few blocked kicks showed a leak, but that’s looking for problems.
Trevor Lawrence has been almost flawless, there hasn’t been any real drama, and now the defensive front is among the best in college football at getting behind the line.
Syracuse’s offensive front has allowed 4.8 sacks per game. It’s still early, but that’s the worst rate of pass protection by a mile by any Power Five program since Washington State allowed 4.75 sacks per game in 2012.
What’s Going To Happen
The 73-7 Clemson win over Georgia Tech last week was breathtaking, but how long will the team keep its foot on the gas? It took it easy against the Yellow Jackets after halftime, and it still didn’t matter in the final score.
Clemson completely dominated and destroyed the Orange last year, and won by 35. This time around, the Tigers can call their shot against a team that couldn’t slow down Liberty, but they’ll get through this light scrimmage and allow a few late scores with the backups up.

Syracuse football out of contention for 2021 3-star OL Armon Bethea (itlh; Adler)

Armon Bethea, a 2021 three-star offensive lineman, has eliminated Syracuse football as one of his potential collegiate destinations.

Syracuse football has struggled with inconsistent play and injuries on its offensive line in the 2020 term to date, but the Orange does have reinforcements on the way in next year’s recruiting class, although Armon Bethea won’t prove one of them.

The 6-foot-6, 310-pound offensive guard, who attends Erasmus Hall Campus in Brooklyn, N.Y., recently posted via Twitter a top four of Arizona State, Arkansas, fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Louisville and Ole Miss.

Bethea, a three-star prospect in the 2021 cycle according to the primary recruiting services, did add in his tweet, “Recruitment still 100% open.” However, my gut tells me that the ‘Cuse is out of the running for him, regardless.

— Armon ”Big Baby ” Bethea (@D1BoundArmon) October 12, 2020
Steve Wiltfong, director of football recruiting for 247Sports, has logged a prediction for Bethea in the direction of Arizona State out of the Pac-12 Conference, and Wiltfong is assigning a “high” confidence level to his projection. Two other experts on the 247Sports Web site have since joined Wiltfong in forecasting Bethea to Arizona State.

Per a review of the main recruiting Web sites, Bethea held scholarship offers from numerous other teams besides his four finalists and the Orange, including squads such as Georgia Tech, Kansas, Maryland, Miami, Pittsburgh and West Virginia. The ‘Cuse offered him in January of 2020, per Bethea’s Twitter page.

Week 6: Syracuse football falls to bottom of ACC Power Rankings - The Juice Online (the juice; Vescovi)

Another unpredictable weekend in the ACC brought some big upsets (UNC/FSU) and plenty of movement in the power rankings. Still, the most embarrassing loss of the week was not Georgia Tech’s demolition at the hands of Clemson. No, that honor goes to Syracuse, who lost to Liberty, a team that had never beaten a Power 5 team before. With that in mind, here’s this week’s rankings.

1. Clemson (5-0)
WIN – Georgia Tech (73-7)

What can I write here about Clemson that hasn’t already been said? Clemson went to Atlanta with 80 players and used 79 of them to blew out the Yellow Jackets. Shame on Dabo for not getting an banged-up D.J Uiagalelei on the field so he could have fun with his buds.

Clemson Week: The close games Syracuse football fans forget (itlh; Mlodzinski)

In honor of Clemson week, we take a look at some of the best performances Syracuse football has put up against the Tigers in recent years.

Most people liken Dino Babers as the coach who figured out Dabo Swinney and Clemson in one way or another. But before Babers was Scott Shafer, a Syracuse football coach with a not so good track record except for against one team in particular – the Clemson Tigers.

Shafer was a defensive specialist but only lasted a few years on the Hill, winning just 14 games in three years. And while none of those wins included an SU30 football shocker over Clemson, there were two instances in which the Orange had legitimate chances at an upset.

In 2014, Shafer’s second year with the ‘Cuse, the 3-4 Orange traveled to No. 21 Clemson, in a game where it’s safe to say few people thought would be a close game.

But after Syracuse struck first on a Cole Murphy field goal, the defense stood up, making big play after big play and forcing the Tigers’ offense off the field more times than not. The stout defense put the Orange up 6 to 3 heading into the break.

College Football: Ranking all 15 ACC starting quarterbacks ahead of Week 8 | College Football | PFF (PFF; Treash)

The best quarterback in the ACC has been set in stone and is immovable from that top spot, but there’s an intriguing debate to be had as to who follows as the next best signal-caller in the conference.

Now that we've seen these quarterbacks take the field for a third of the 2020 college football season, we have a better idea of which quarterbacks are taking that next step forward; we know which passers are for real, and we know the ones who are not. With the help of our unique play-by-play grading and the advanced data available with PFF’s CFB Premium Stats+, here is how each ACC quarterback stacks up as we head into Week 8.

1. TREVOR LAWRENCE, CLEMSON

Shocking to see, I know.

Lawrence was the second-most-valuable player in college football in his true freshman and sophomore seasons — behind only Joe Burrow — and he is now on pace to have his best season yet.

The future No. 1 overall pick has earned a 92.7 passing grade in his five games, leading the conference by six grading points. Lawrence hasn’t put his mobility to work in the ground game as much or as well as he did last year, but the man has been peppering defenses downfield. His grade rank in the conference on throws of 10 or more yards downfield remains the best by quite a bit, and his rate of quarterback-fault incompletions on such throws is the lowest among his peers. A season ago, small stretches of inaccuracy would pop up every once in awhile, but that has been far from the case in 2020.

2. SAM HOWELL, NORTH CAROLINA

It wasn’t until the second half of Week 7 that Howell finally produced like we expected him to. Howell hadn’t been bad in 2020 before that half, but there was a clear lack of aggressiveness in the playcalling, and his numbers took a hit as a result. The North Carolina signal-caller earned a 74.2 passing grade over the first three games of 2020, and he did that with the lowest average depth of target (aDOT) in the ACC — a mark nearly 4 yards lower than it was in 2019.

Then, after the Tar Heels found themselves trailing by 24 points at the half against Florida State, they had no choice but to be aggressive. Howell’s aDOT in those final two quarters skyrocketed from 3.5 to 20.4; he earned a 93.6 passing grade while completing 6-of-9 deep attempts (20-plus yards downfield) for 186 yards and three touchdowns in that second half. It was reminiscent of his 2019 true freshman campaign when he ranked third in the FBS in deep completions.

Let Howell air it out and prosper.
...
...
12. BAILEY HOCKMAN, NC STATE

Unfortunately, the Wolfpack’s starting quarterback, Devin Leary, broke his fibula in last week’s matchup against Duke. The redshirt sophomore earned just a 57.2 passing grade in 2019 but improved that mark to 77.1 on his 122 dropbacks in 2020. He was one of the more aggressive quarterbacks in the country, and that playstyle paid off, as he had the second-best big-time throw rate in the ACC up until his injury.

This offense will now be led by Hockman, who began the season as NC State’s starting quarterback. Sure, he was conservative, with a 5.8 average depth of target, but he did complete 6-of-9 passes that traveled 10 or more yards downfield, racking up 130 yards and a touchdown. Hockman then got the start against Virginia Tech the following week, despite Leary being ready to return from the COVID-19 protocol.

Hockman was then quickly replaced after a shocking start against the Hokies that saw him struggle to a 36.8 passing grade with two turnover-worthy plays on 17 pass attempts. Then, when he came in for Leary in Week 7, Hockman attempted seven passes and managed to produce another two turnover-worthy plays, resulting in a 29.1 passing grade.

13. REX CULPEPPER, SYRACUSE

Culpepper has now become the starter for the Orange in the wake of Tommy DeVito's season-ending injury.

The fifth-year senior made his second career start against Liberty last week, and it didn’t go all that well. He recorded a 56.2 passing grade for the game and failed to get anything rolling downfield. Culpepper attempted 17 passes over 10 yards downfield and completed just four. For his second start of the year, Culpepper and Syracuse are lucky enough to go up against the Clemson Tigers. They will be in for a long day.

End of era: ShoppingTown, Great Northern Mall theaters not reopening; signs gone (PS; $; Doran)

For decades, moviegoers have flocked to ShoppingTown and Great Northern malls to catch the latest blockbuster.

Many theaters in Upstate this week are reopening under strict occupancy rules from the state after being forced to close due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But don’t expect the theaters at ShoppingTown in DeWitt and Great Northern Mall in Clay to be opening again.

One pretty good clue? The signs for each theater have recently been removed, leaving only the outline of the letters on the walls.

Security officers at both malls confirmed the theaters are not reopening.

And the two theater locations have been removed from Regal’s website listing its locations.

Regal Cinemas announced this week it will reopen eleven movie theaters in New York state including the theaters at Destiny USA in Syracuse for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began in March.

Mike Kohan, who purchased Great Northern Mall in 2017, said news of Regal’s closure at his mall is news to him. He said Regal still has a couple of years on its lease.

In fact, Great Northern has sued Regal Cinemas for not paying rent. The theater stopped paying rent in November 2019, five months before the pandemic closed theaters, and owes about $703,439, according to the mall owners.

ShoppingTown’s Regal has a lease that doesn’t expire until July 2023. Officials at the mall’s owner Moonbeam could not be reached for comment, and Regal spokespeople didn’t return phone messages and emails.
