Welcome to National Chocolate Day!

Today we celebrate and indulge in chocolate, the sweet treat that is made from the cocoa bean, which comes from the Theobroma cacao tree. The word "chocolate" itself comes from the Spanish, and it stems from the Aztec word xocolatl, which means "bitter water." The Aztecs pounded cacao beans and drank them without adding any sugar, and they thought that the beans came from the gods. Indeed, Theobroma means "food of the gods." Cocoa beans are about 50% "cocoa butter" and 50% "chocolate liquor." Hernando Cortés brought cocoa beans back to Spain, and a chocolate drink that included sugar became popular there right away. This seems to contradict the accounts that say chocolate wasn't introduced in Europe until 1550. The word "chocolate" first appeared in print, in England, in 1604.

During the eighteenth century, a chocolate drink became fashionable throughout Europe, and it first became manufactured in what would become the United States in 1765. The first chocolate factory opened in the United States in 1780, but hard chocolate candy was not yet made until the dawn of the nineteenth century. Hardened chocolate candy bars first started being sold on a large scale by the Cadbury Company of England in 1842, and "chocolate creams"—candies with sugar-cream centers—were first eaten by Americans in the 1860s.

SU News

Syracuse’s 4th down ineffectiveness evident after loss to No. 1 Clemson (DO; Emerman)

The first of Syracuse’s two key fourth downs against No. 1 Clemson didn’t go as planned.

Receiver and kick returner Nykeim Johnson took the direct snap in the shotgun from SU’s own 45-yard line but didn’t even make it halfway back to the line of scrimmage. Safety Joseph Charleston got a free release and wrapped up Johnson just two steps into his power run.

It’s possible that failure was on head coach Dino Babers’ mind for the second notable fourth down, when he elected to punt one yard from a first down late in the third quarter on SU’s 41-yard line, his team down 27-21. It would’ve been an aggressive call, but dethroning the best team in the nation doesn’t happen with tentative game management.

This season, Syracuse (1-5, 1-4 Atlantic Coast) is 3-for-12 on fourth downs, 85th out of 92 teams who have played in 2020. Syracuse’s ineffectiveness on fourth downs must have informed Babers’ decision to punt on his own 41-yard line down 27-21 against Clemson.

With analytics suggesting teams should be more aggressive in fourth-and-short situations, the Orange have fallen behind. It’s one of many issues plaguing them this year, but it’s not an anomaly. Last year, they were worst in the ACC in fourth down conversion rate.

“Obviously, you want a better percentage than what we have,” Babers said. “But if we want to go for it, we’re going to go for it.”

Wake Forest vs Syracuse Prediction, Game Preview (CFN; Fiutak)

Wake Forest (3-2) vs Syracuse (1-5) Game Preview

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The takeaways are coming in bunches for a team that’s dominating the turnover margin.

There are a whole lot of good things happening on a three-game-winning streak, and most of it’s being fueled by the ten takeaways and the ridiculous +10 turnover margin.

Shockingly, Syracuse’s horrible offensive line played one of its better games of the season against Clemson last week, but the O also had its worst game of the year turnover-wise, giving it up four times. Do that against this Wake Forest D, and it’s going to get ugly fast.

However …

Why Syracuse Will Win

For all of the problems, the Orange haven’t been giving the ball away. On the flip side, the defense is even better than Wake Forest’s at generating takeaways.

The Orange lead the nation with 17, forcing mistake after mistake up until last week against Clemson.

It’s been getting the quarterbacks beaten up, and the defense can’t seem to come up with a meaningful stop when it’s not forcing a turnover, but the O only gave it up four times in five games before last week.

Wake Forest has a nice offense, but a lot of the production is fueled off of the takeaways. The O rocked Virginia, but that’s the only time it hit the 400-yard mark against an FBS team.

What’s Going To Happen

It was one of the craziest games of last year that you didn’t see, and it was an amazing way for the Orange to end. SU kicked a field goal in overtime and one it on a dramatic scoop and score for the rare nine-point OT win.

The two teams also combined for 21 penalties and eight turnovers.

Neither team is great at keeping the chains moving, but Syracuse is a whole lot worse at it. Wake Forest can score, and the Orange can’t.

Syracuse hopeful of finishing season on an upswing (AP; Kekis)

With one win in six games, Syracuse sits in a four-way tie one step above the cellar of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Still, hope springs eternal in this pandemic-stricken season, even after the Orange's latest setback — a 47-21 loss at top-ranked Clemson. After falling behind 17-0 in the first quarter Saturday, the Orange rallied and were within 27-21 until late in the third quarter.

“I was really proud of how they played. They looked like two different football teams,” Orange coach Dino Babers said Monday. “They had some misses early, but I also thought they had some growth in tackling. I didn’t feel like we were totally mismatched on the effort part of it. Physically, I thought we did some things well, but they’re bigger, stronger, older, and eventually they wore us down."

Jaguars coach Doug Marrone in the hot seat after 6 straight losses (Syracuse and CNY in the NFL) (PS; $; Herbert)

Former Syracuse football coach Doug Marrone is in the hot seat after six straight losses with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

NBC reports the Jaguars (1-6) have tied an NFL record by allowing at least 30 points for a sixth consecutive game, losing 39-29 to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Marrone, who coached SU from 2009-12 and the Buffalo Bills from 2013-14, led Jacksonville to the AFC Championship in his first season as the Jaguars head coach, but is now headed for his third losing season in a row. He’s lost 12 of his last 15 games and 25-35 overall since taking over the Jags at the end of the 2016 season, and there’s speculation owner Shad Khan could give him the boot soon.

“I think that any time you’re losing like this, and you’re not performing well on Sundays, I think it’s naive [to think it can’t happen]. It can happen,” Marrone told the Associated Press on Monday. "I just work and do the best job I can for the coaches and players.

Syracuse Players Analyze Wake Forest Game and Clemson Loss – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Shults)

With Wake Forest up next on the schedule for Syracuse, the team has turned its focus to Saturday. Linebacker Mikel Jones said that the Demon Deacons have a good rushing attack. That’s been SU’s kryptonite on defense the past couple of seasons. While the Orange held Clemson to under 150 ground yards, they did allow over 300 rushing yards to both Duke and Liberty.

“We were way more locked in on our assignments,” Jones said. “Our game plan probably put us in better position.”

Jones also said that there was more trust between teammates against Clemson to fill the gaps that the Tigers tried to open up. Against Liberty, Josh Black said there were huge holes in the defense that allowed Shedro Louis to rush for 170 yards, including a 52 yard and 75 yard touchdown.

Orange football players on momentum after Clemson: 'Treat every opponent like No. 1 team' (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

Winning in the ACC is no easy task, but certainly doable with the right pieces.

However, winning at Death Valley is next to impossible, something opponents haven't accomplished in years.

Yet, the Syracuse Orange played the No. 1 Clemson Tigers about as close as any opponent in 2020.

Syracuse only trailed by six points late in the third quarter when a Rex Culpepper fumble resulted in a defensive touchdown for the Tigers.

From there, the Orange were never the same, as Clemson scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter while sealing the deal defensively in a 47-21 outcome.

Happy (Almost) Halloween! The Costumes Syracuse Football Should Be Rocking This Holiday – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; May)

Happy almost Halloween! While we build up to the spookiest day of the year, it’s only fitting to think about what some Syracuse Football players/coaches should dress up as for the holiday. Keep in mind these are very rough sketches, but we hope this will bring some joy to a disappointing Orange season. So, without further adieu here are some of the Fizz’s ideas.

TOMMY DEVITO – DJ PAULY D

I mean this one is just too easy. DeVito is from New Jersey, has the same build, and throws footballs on a daily basis, which is very similar to Pauly D’s classic fist pumps. The costume wouldn’t even be that difficult to put together for DeVito. He just needs a gold necklace, headphones and a cut off shirt. Plus, of course, a whole lot of hair gel. Just look at how similar they already look:

AIRON SERVAIS – PIRATE

Servais already has the hair and beard to be a pirate. All he would need is to toss on a pirate shirt (whatever that is), a pirate hat and an eye patch. I have a hunch Servais has already been a pirate before.

Axe: Syracuse football 2020 midseason grades (PS; $; Axe)

The Syracuse football team is halfway home in the 2020 season with six games down and five to go.

Syracuse’s season has been wrecked by injury and opt-outs, losing its starting quarterback and All-American safety so far among many others.

Syracuse has less than 60 healthy scholarship players, 13 different players have started their first collegiate game for the Orange and 45 percent of the travel roster for the Orange’s last game at Clemson were freshman or redshirt freshman.

That said, I’ve got my red pen out and ready to grade the 1-5 Orange on what head coach Dino Babers' squad has handed in so far.

Teel: Looking ahead to ACC's Clemson-Notre Dame showdown (richmond.com; Teel)

Gazing ahead is among sports’ most timeless indulgences. We assume impending results that will, in theory, create the DVR-worthy matchups everyone craves.

Even when those assumptions boomerang, even when the next Game of the Decade is foiled, we saddle up and ride again. Looking ahead is that irresistible to fans, media and, yes, athletes.

Coaches detest this. Blessed and cursed with remarkable tunnel vision, they consider only the task ahead, be the opponent Clemson or Christopher Newport.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly violated his profession’s code last week, and the Fighting Irish responded with a 45-3 rout of Pittsburgh on a Saturday that pared the field of contenders for the ACC championship game.

Out: North Carolina State and, most puzzling, Virginia Tech.

Still in: Notre Dame, Miami, North Carolina and five-time defending champ Clemson.

Links, news and rumors - 10/27/20

I'm going to start today's links with "the Bottom 25" from CBS Sports...

College football rankings: Penn State joins The Bottom 25...

THE BOTTOM 25

25. Middle Tennessee 2-5
24. Florida State 2-4 Well, so much for any momentum a decent performance against Notre Dame and a win over North Carolina might have brought. The Seminoles were worked over by Louisville 48-16 on Saturday. This week they get a Pitt team that was just smothered by Notre Dame. (18)
23. Duke 1-5 The Blue Devils had the week off but will return to action this weekend, hoping to pick up win No. 2 against Charlotte. (12)
22. Ole Miss 1-4
21. Western Kentucky 2-4
20. Texas State 1-6
19. Penn State 0-1
18. Syracuse 1-5 Listen, Syracuse might have lost to Clemson 47-21, but it covered the spread by a full 20 points. Sometimes it's not about victory; it's about maintaining the natural order of things, and that natural order says no conference game should ever have a spread in the upper 40s. Good for you for doing what's right, Syracuse. I hope you're rewarded with a win over Wake Forest. (9)

Winningest P5 Teams, Last 20 years

Overall record is what gets a team into the playoffs, but there's something to be said for conference records. Why? Because there's a lot of variation in the strength of non-conference schedules (looking at you, Baylor), but power five conference schedules tend to be fairly consistent. Here, then, are the P5 teams with winning conference records over the last 20 years (for longevity) and/or 6 years (since the last big realignment), in order of highest-to-lowest*:

See stores closed on Thanksgiving, Black Friday deal start dates (PS; Tampone)

Thanksgiving and Black Friday shopping will look a bit different in 2020.

For one thing, you’re not likely to find as much open on Turkey Day this year. A number of the biggest retail chains started announcing over the summer that they’ll stay closed on the holiday this year due to the coronavirus.

That’s a major change that perhaps only a pandemic could spark. Thanksgiving hours became standard at Black Friday shopping hot spots like Target, Best Buy and more years ago.

Even Black Friday itself is in for some changes. Several chains, including Home Depot, Best Buy, Macy’s and Target have said they’re planning Black Friday deals much earlier than usual.

Chains have been stretching out sales across multiple weeks for years now, a trend driven at least in part by the rise of online shopping. The practice seems likely to speed up in 2020.

Sales at Home Depot, for example, will run from Nov. 8 to Dec. 2. BJ’s will start “early bird” deals Nov. 5 with Black Friday sales running Nov. 20 to Nov. 30.

Sales begin at Walmart Nov. 4 and Best Buy is guaranteeing Black Friday prices on some items now, according to CNET. Target is planning deals for the entire month of November.

Amazon launched a pre-Black Friday event Oct. 16.

As for in-person shopping, here’s a look at big chains that will stay dark on Thanksgiving this year, according to bestblackfriday.com, a Black Friday shopping site:

  • BJ’s
  • Bath & Body Works
  • Bed Bath & Beyond
  • Best Buy
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods
  • Foot Locker
  • Gamestop
  • Home Depot
  • J.C. Penney
  • Kohl’s
  • Macy’s
  • Office Depot
  • REI
  • Target
  • Ulta Beauty
  • Walmart
  • Williams Sonoma
The chains below are normally always closed on Thanksgiving. It seems unlikely this is the year they decide to open:

That’s a VERY insightful article.
Excellent piece.
Agreed. This should be hot linked on the recruiting board and every time someone makes the usual fuss about recruiting this article should be the response.
I found his comments on Syracuse's location and how hard it is to get kids on campus particularly interesting. We forget how isolated and insular we are way up here. For most kids they might as well be packing up and heading to Alaska. It's just interesting that something so simple plays such a large role.
