Welcome to American Football Day!
American Football Day celebrates the popular sport, American football. Like many sports, the rules of the game changed a lot over time to be what they now are. The roots of American football are in rugby football and association football—which is commonly known as soccer. The first American football game is seen as being played on November 6, 1869, but the rules were the same as soccer at the time. During the 1870's rugby gained more of an influence on the game, and the ball was allowed to be carried. Walter Camp is known as the "Father of American football", and rule changes he came up with in 1880 brought about things such as the snap, the concept of downs, and teams having eleven players on the field at once. At this time most football was being played at the college level, and a intercollegiate association that later came to be known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was formed in 1905. In 1906 the forward pass was introduced, and changes in field sizes and points for scoring changed soon afterwards. In 1920 a professional league was formed, which came to be known as the National Football League (NFL). By the 1930's the NFL was gaining in popularity because of its emphasis on the passing game, and football in general was gaining in popularity.

Could Syracuse have a possible one-two punch with Sean Tucker and Cooper Lutz? (SI; Payne)
Syracuse running backs Sean Tucker and Cooper Lutz started the year as fifth and sixth stringers. Turbulent circumstances now have both of them shifting into a potentially potent one-two punch.
Tucker, a true freshman, burst onto the scene in late September when he sprung for 112 rushing yards and two touchdowns against Georgia Tech. Tucker backed-up that breakout performance by posting his second 100-yard outing two weeks later in the Liberty loss. Tucker's decisive, downhill running has carried him 361 yards for an average of more than five yards per tote.
Head coach Dino Babers wasn't sure what he had in Tucker when he first arrived in Syracuse. But after seeing him tossed into the fire thanks to a litany of injuries and opt-outs, Babers now believes Tucker has what it takes to be something special.

Emerman: Forget Clemson. Syracuse needs to start chasing Boston College. (DO; Emerman)
Squint, and Boston College and Syracuse share many similarities.
Storied programs with one national title and a Heisman Trophy winner apiece. Northeastern, academically prestigious schools that joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in the 21st century.
Look a little closer, and the rivals are at a crossroads. On the verge of their fourth losing season in the last five years, the Orange (1-6, 1-5 Atlantic Coast) are trending the wrong way under Dino Babers. Meanwhile, former Ohio State defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has instantly jolted much-needed energy into a previously middling Boston College (4-3, 3-3).
The two rivals’ meeting in the Carrier Dome on Saturday is a reminder of how rapidly the power dynamics of the ACC can shift. Coaching carousels swing, gamebreakers transfer, and recruiting classes filter in as graduating ones exit. The scary thing for Syracuse fans is that Hafley’s only dipped his toe in the Atlantic Coast water, spending the last nine months on Zoom calls, without spring ball or recruiting visits.

After BC’s stellar performance at Clemson, beat writers predict SU defeat (DO; Staff)
Syracuse enters its eighth game of the season with questions at quarterback and an injury-depleted defense. Its next opponent led the No. 1 team in the nation by three scores at the half. Boston College touts Notre Dame transfer Phil Jurkovec as quarterback and former Ohio State assistant Jeff Hafley as head coach.
Here’s what our beat writers think will happen when Syracuse faces BC:
Anthony Dabbundo (5-2)
Fly Eagles Fly
Boston College 31, Syracuse 17
The Orange are now 1-6, and it’s not entirely clear what is left to play for in the final four games for Syracuse. Perhaps most interesting about the Orange is the ongoing quarterback situation and how much SU plays JaCobian Morgan down the stretch of the season. Based on head coach Dino Babers’ comments, Morgan’s big day does not appear to be Saturday.
The Eagles have a significant offensive edge in both passing and rushing success rate, and they don’t allow many big plays defensively. Without the Orange’s defense forcing turnovers, it’s hard to see how SU will sustain long-scoring drives. Because of that, I’ll take Boston College to win this game comfortably. Another week of mediocre quarterback play from Rex Culpepper only emboldens the calls from the fans and media to play Morgan more after the Orange’s bye week. Syracuse takes another loss en route to one of the worst seasons in program history.
Danny Emerman (3-4)
Buckle up
Boston College 38, Syracuse 13
The Eagles are a damn good football team. Jeff Hafley is a damn good coach, and Phil Jurkovec is a damn good quarterback — perhaps the best non-Trevor Lawrence passer Syracuse will face all year. North Carolina’s Sam Howell has higher upside, but with Lawrence injured at the moment, I’m not sure there’s a QB in the ACC I’d take over Jurkovec, who leads the conference in passing yards. He can really sling it, which will test SU’s battered-yet-impressive secondary.
But it’s not just Jurkovec, the Notre Dame transfer. Syracuse is outmatched on both sides of the ball and at just about every position. I don’t anticipate this one being particularly close at all.

A pair of northeast rivals will square off in the Loud House on Saturday when Boston College visits Syracuse. It’ll be the 54th meeting between the two programs, the fifth-most frequent overall opponent for ‘Cuse and second-most among ACC opponents, trailing just Pitt.
The Orange look to snap a four-game losing streak and move to 2-3 at home this season, a building they’ve been .500 or better in for each of the past-three seasons.
Saturday’s game will be televised on Regional Sports Networks (YES Network locally) at 2 p.m.

Stock Up, Stock Down: Wake Forest – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Unsworth)
Basketball season is almost here. Unfortunately, by almost here, I mean three weeks away. That means the Syracuse faithful are subject to watching the Orange play another week of terrible football. Last Saturday’s result? A 38-14 drubbing at the hands of Wake Forest. It’s getting more and more difficult each week to pick out the bright spots, but we might as well try. And as always, the stock market is still moving.
Stock Up
JaCobian Morgan: Seven-for-seven. For 91 yards and a touchdown. These are the only stats you need to know about the freshman quarterback’s performance against the Demon Deacons. Morgan led a four-minute-long drive from the SU 20-yard-line to the promised land, and was in control for all of those four minutes. He looked like a real presence in the pocket, had zip on his throws, and tossed a dime on the run, none of which Rex Culpepper has done in his three games as a starter. He also threw a touchdown pass to a tight end. Who knew that was possible in this offense?! No matter how hard head coach Dino Babers tries to discredit Morgan’s success as “7-on-7” (which no, it wasn’t, because there were 11 players on the field in a real game) where Wake “was dropping back” (false, the Deacs brought a six-man blitz when Morgan rolled out and found Sharod Johnson). Morgan should start against BC this weekend.
Cooper Lutz: In August, nobody would’ve thought Lutz would even get a chance to see playing time on offense, let alone carry the ball 15 times to the tune of 5.4 yards per carry. But the Reading, P.A., native made the most of his first career start last weekend. Lutz didn’t display any outstanding athletic ability, but hit the open holes, and kept his feet moving after first contact. He was the second biggest positive from Saturday. It helped that Wake was in prevent mode for most of the game.

Syracuse Football: 3-star LB Nyair Graham sets date, no expert predictions (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football 2022 target Nyair Graham, a top-40 linebacker nationally in this cycle, has revealed his announcement date, and it’s tough to get a read on a possible favorite or favorites for him at this juncture.

Teel: Flood of ACC Network football games inconvenient for many UVA, Hokies fans (richmond.com; Teel)
Virginia is set to play its seventh football game of the season next Saturday, at home against Louisville. Each one landed on the ACC Network.
Pittsburgh’s road test at Florida State this week marks the Panthers’ seventh ACC Network appearance in eight games this year. Virginia Tech’s home date with Liberty on Saturday is the Hokies’ fifth ACC Network game in seven outings.
Through games of Nov. 7, no other conference program has been ticketed for the ACC Network more than four times.
Sheer coincidence? Or, a none-too-subtle jab at a cable television powerhouse?

With more than 20 million subscribers, Xfinity Comcast is among the nation’s largest pay TV providers. To date, it is also the 15-month-old ACC Network’s white whale, the marquee void in the network’s national availability.

So are the ACC’s television partners at ESPN, and their parent company, Disney, attempting to leverage Xfinity Comcast? Joanie Mahoney, Onondaga County’s former county executive, has been named president of SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse.
The SUNY Board of Trustees in Albany announced the appointment earlier this afternoon after meeting in Albany, according to Stephanie Speechio, an assistant vice president at ESF. Her annual salary as president will be $275,000. She also will have use of a campus-owned residence and car.
The SUNY Board of Trustees said in a resolution Mahoney has helped ESF expand “... as an instrumental partner with government to address pressing issues like climate change and intrusion of invasive species in our waterways, and functions as point person on Covid matters and preparedness."
SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras said Mahoney’s experience as county executive “... demonstrates her abilities to form coalitions and achieve results -- exactly the outcomes we’re hoping to see at ESF.”
