Welcome to National Nachos Day!

Nachos are celebrated today! They trace their roots to the border of Mexico and Texas. One day in 1943, the wives of ten U.S. soldiers stationed at Fort Duncan in Eagle Pass, Texas, crossed the border into Piedras Negras, Mexico. When they stopped in to eat at Club Victoria, chef Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya threw together a snack to give them and called it "Nachos Especiales". In 1954 his recipe was published in St. Anne's Cookbook, by the Church of the Redeemer in Eagle Pass.

There are many variations of nachos. "Ballpark nachos"—covered with jalapenos and melted cheese—were invented by Sal and Margarita Manriquez, and are now popular at sports stadiums. Sal Manriquez started selling them as "Margarita's State Fair Nachos" at the State Fair in Dallas in 1964, and in 1975 asked to sell them at Arlington Stadium, where the Texas Rangers then played. Manriquez was turned down and later found out that the stadium was selling a version of his nachos anyway.

What Trill Williams' departure means for Syracuse football (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football standout defensive back Trill Williams is off to chase a career in the NFL. A versatile junior with dynamic athleticism and a knack for playmaking, Williams announced his plan to forgo the rest of his junior season and declare early for the 2021 draft on Wednesday night. What does that mean for the Orange?

While Andre Cisco's departure was fully expected by many within the program, Williams' decision doesn't come as a surprise either. SU remains hamstrung on the field in 2020, forced to start three freshman safeties, but the cupboard in the secondary is far from bare. The youth movement is just starting a little earlier than Dino Babers and Co. would have liked.

Down Cisco, Williams and redshirt junior Eric Coley, the Orange has started true freshmen Rob Hanna and Ja'Had Carter as well as redshirt freshman Aman Greenwood over the last three games. They've made mistakes, as Babers explained, that are inevitable for first-year players: Hanna knocking a fumble out of bounds against Liberty despite no one being around him, Greenwood bobbling and dropping a gift-wrapped interception from Clemson's Trevor Lawrence.

Babers: 3 QBs took 1st-team practice reps this week (7 things to know) (PS; $; Mink)

Three quarterbacks took first-team practice reps this week, Syracuse coach Dino Babers said.

The coach is taking a hard look at the most important position on offense as SU tries to balance winning games amid a 1-6 season while getting a head start on evaluating personnel for next year.

Fifth-year senior Rex Culpepper has started each of the past three games after Tommy DeVito, the season-opening starter, went down with an injury. Freshman JaCobian Morgan played sparingly the past two weeks. Dillon Markiewicz, another true freshman, has yet to see the field ahead of a 2 p.m., kick Saturday against Boston College at the Carrier Dome.

“I look at it as who’s going to be more productive with moving the team, who’s giving us the best opportunity to run the offense and hopefully score points,” Babers said Thursday night on his radio show. "We’ll add all those guys up and watch them in practice, and when we come to gameday we’ll make a call.

College football: Former sixth option at running back, Syracuse’s Lutz making most of position change (nny350.com; St Croix)

The unlikely journey from inside receiver to featured running back might only be getting started for Syracuse University football redshirt sophomore Cooper Lutz.

Lutz is coming off a career performance for the Orange (1-6 overall, 1-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) and is seemingly lined up for a committee role moving forward while potentially taking on another heavy workload when SU hosts Boston College at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Carrier Dome.

Lutz finished with 81 rushing yards on 18 carries, adding four catches for 25 yards, to account for nearly half of SU’s offensive production in last Saturday’s 38-14 setback against Wake Forest. He made his first career start in place of freshman Sean Tucker, whose game status is unclear due to a lower-leg injury.

Lutz was a standout running back for Burk Catholic High School in his native Reading, Pa., and was recruited to play inside receiver by SU head coach Dino Babers. He reverted to running back this past spring and entered training camp expecting to be sixth in SU’s backfield pecking order.

“My process of getting on the field has just been a grind mentally, emotionally, physically, getting my body right each day to go out to practice and just knowing that my time was coming, my time was coming, and I just had to work for it,” Lutz said in his first media appearance via Zoom this week.

Boston College (4-3) vs Syracuse (1-6) Game Preview

Why Boston College Will Win

Syracuse is already having problems, and it already lost S Andre Cisco, and now it loses another defensive back with Trill Williams opting out for the rest of the season. And here comes the Boston College passing game.

Phil Jurkovec has been a great get for for the program, he’s been a tough force for a passing game that took over the offensive style, and now it’s time to throw at will. Against a Syracuse team with a struggling offense, get up early, and coast from there.

The Orange don’t have the running game to take control of the narrative.

Syracuse Orange v. Boston College Eagles Prediction & Preview (11/7/20) - The Juice Online (the juice; Staff)

Syracuse will try to snap a four-game losing streak when they host the Boston College Eagles (2:00 p.m. ET / ACC Network) on Saturday. Ahead of the game, The Juice Online’s Brendan Blehar and Wes Cheng give their predictions below.

Brendan Blehar
Season Record (0-0)

With Syracuse at 1-6, the Orange is looking for any sort of positive momentum building as they head into the final stretch of this forgettable season. While there have been flashes of good football, Syracuse has not been able to sustain this for four quarters.

On the other side, Boston College made headlines last weekend in a thriller where they nearly handed No. 1 Clemson their first loss of the season. While there is no such thing as moral victories in a sport where every game matters, this game alone should show where the 4-3 Eagles are as a team compared to the Orange.

Boston College averages almost 28 points a game and should be able to handle this one easily. Syracuse’s offense has struggled, and as a result, time of possession has kept their defense on the field more much than it should be.

In the loss to Wake Forest, Syracuse’s offense was unable to eclipse 60 total plays, which in turn totally gassed a young defense. Syracuse averages just 65 plays on offense this year, and for reference, they averaged 85 last year.

Given Rex Culpepper’s turnover issues and Syracuse’s inability to come away with points when they’re deep in their own territory, Boston College should win this one with relative ease in a 35-14 decision.

Boston College vs. Syracuse Football Prediction and Preview (athlonsports.com; Rodriguez)

ACC foes searching for a bounce-back win collide in Carrier Dome

The Syracuse Orange will look to snap a four-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon when they host the Boston College Eagles from the Carrier Dome. Syracuse (1-6, 1-5 ACC) is winless since Sept. 26 — a 37-20 victory over Georgia Tech, the Orange's first and only win of 2020 — while Boston College (4-3, 3-3) is finishing off a stretch of three road games in four weeks having lost the previous two to Virginia Tech and No. 1 Clemson.

That Boston College-Clemson game was particularly eye-catching, as the Eagles led for a substantial portion of the game before the Tigers ultimately pulled in front. Boston College was up 28-13 at halftime and 28-26 after the third quarter, but couldn't hang on and pull off what would have been a dramatic upset of the top-ranked Tigers.

Previewing 2020 Football: at Syracuse — The Heights (bcheights.com; Healy)

Who is BC playing?
Syracuse
When is BC playing?
Saturday, Nov. 7, 2 p.m.
Where is BC playing?
The Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
How to watch:
The game will be livestreamed on NESN.
How to listen:
The audio broadcast of the game will be available on BC Learfield IMG Sports Network (WEEI 93.7FM).

Series History:

Facing Syracuse (1-6, 1-5 Atlantic Coast) is one of Boston College football’s oldest traditions, as the two teams first met 96 years ago. Syracuse leads the all-time series 32-21, including a 20-8 all-time edge when playing inside the Carrier Dome. The two teams have split the results in ACC competition with four wins apiece, though the Eagles (4-3, 3-3) put on a dominant performance in the Carrier Dome a season ago.

In 2019, BC racked up its most points in series history in a 58-27 win over the Orange. It was the Eagles’ second straight win on Syracuse’s field, and if BC comes away with a win this Saturday, it will be the first time that BC has won three consecutive away games in the history of the series.

Syracuse takes on Boston College hoping to end four-game skid (AP; Kekis)

Syracuse is slogging through a down season with only one win and four games left, and coach Dino Babers is already thinking about next year — it's all about evaluating now.

“We’re going to go out, try to win football games and whatever happens after that happens,” Babers said.

Syracuse (1-6, 1-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) has lost four straight since beating Georgia Tech, and three have come in the Carrier Dome as the Orange prepare to host Boston College (4-3, 3-3) on Saturday. The longtime rivals have something in common — hard-fought losses at top-ranked Clemson the previous two weeks.

“I think every day it’s just about going out and getting better,” Orange tailback Cooper Lutz said. “What we’re playing for is to win. Nobody wants to go out there and ... lose the game before it even starts."

In Syracuse's 38-14 loss last week to Wake Forest, redshirt senior quarterback Rex Culpepper struggled in his third start since replacing injured Tommy DeVito. Culpepper completed 15 of 27 passes for just 85 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions before being replaced by freshman JaCobian Morgan in the fourth quarter. Morgan responded by hitting all seven of his throws for 57 yards and his first career touchdown.

Syracuse Football: Loss of star duo stings, but future secondary is stellar (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football junior defensive back Trill Williams has joined Andre Cisco in declaring for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Coming into the 2020 campaign, a lot of folks hoped that Syracuse football juniors Andre Cisco and Trill Williams would put forth stellar performances in the Orange secondary, and then the expectation centered on both of them forgoing their remaining eligibility in Central New York and declaring for the 2021 NFL Draft.

What unfortunately has happened, though, is that both Cisco, a pre-season All-American candidate at safety, and Williams, an under-rated yet extremely talented defensive back, had their 2020 seasons cut short while dealing with injuries and will prepare for next year’s NFL Draft.

In mid-October, Cisco said that he would enter into the 2021 NFL Draft. He had suffered a lower-body injury when Cisco collided with a ‘Cuse teammate prior to the team’s contest on Sept. 26 versus Georgia Tech inside the Carrier Dome, according to media reports.

Now, on Wednesday night, Williams took to social media as well to say that he would forgo the final four games of the 2020 stanza at Syracuse football (1-6) and submit his name into the 2021 NFL Draft.

— Trill Williams (@TrillWilliams6) November 5, 2020
Mike Curtis of Syracuse.com reports that Williams “has been limited with a lower-body injury in recent weeks.” Given that the Orange is immensely struggling in the fall campaign, Williams’ decision is logical and totally understandable.

Syracuse Football: ‘Might be time for change’ at head coach, analyst says (itlh; Adler)

The village idiot speaks...

Syracuse football is looking at the possibility of a 1-10 season, and some want head coach Dino Babers out.

After Syracuse football lost its fourth straight last Saturday afternoon at home against Wake Forest to drop to 1-6, putting the Orange in the basement of the Atlantic Coast Conference standings, a growing section of the ‘Cuse fan base declared that head coach Dino Babers needs to go.

We recently penned this column in which a discussion centered on the likelihood that Babers isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, due to his contract and buyout, unless he does so of his own choosing. However, I can’t imagine a scenario where that would occur.

Still, even though the Orange has faced an abundance of significant injuries to its roster in the fall term, as well as some player opt-outs amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, that doesn’t necessarily mean Babers should get a total pass on the disaster that has ensued in the 2020 campaign to date.

For me, I do think that Babers should get another shot at turning the ‘Cuse around in 2021, particularly because he may have his best recruiting class arriving on the Hill in the 2021 cycle. If he can’t get the program moving in a positive direction in the 2021 season, then his seat becomes really warm, even hot, if you ask me.

But others aren’t aligned with this perspective, and they believe that Babers should get fired sooner rather than later. In a recent article, Mike Farrell, national recruiting director for , said of Babers, “Two seasons removed from a 10-win season the Syracuse offense is horrible and the defense has huge holes. It might be time for a change.”

Bye Week Report: State of the ACC (cardiachill.com; HM)

Before the Panthers resume football season in Tallahassee, I thought it might be a good time for a little introspection.

First, let’s look at the state of the Pittsburgh Panthers 2020 football program. The team sits at 3-4, which doesn’t sound all that bad until you realize they have won a game since September 26th. That’s 40 days and 40 nights ago, and unless Moses comes down the mountain or Jesus turns stones into bread it may be a few more days before the Panthers win again... or will it? A victory over the Florida State Seminoles could restart the offense which has clearly stalled (Pitt is second only to Syracuse in terms of offensive plays for zero yards or less). If we assume that only the Clemson Tigers are out of reach, a 6-5 record is still on the table - although 5-6 or even 4-7 is probably more likely. Good thing the NCAA waived the 6-win minimum for bowl-eligibility!

Now let’s talk about the rest of the ACC. There are two reasons why Pitt Panther fans love the ACC:

1. It’s their favorite conference

2. It’s their only conference

Regardless of which group you happen to be in, you’ll want to know how the rest of the league compares to the other power conferences.

At the top, of course, are the Clemson Tigers and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. If you’ve been living in a cave, trying to avoid all of the political commercials, I totally understand, but now it’s time to get up to speed. These guys are playing this huge showdown game this weekend, and while this is hardly the first time the ACC has produced a top five match-up, this one may be the most hyped - “The Game of the Century” (a phrase often associated with big games involving Notre Dame, for some reason).

NC State football and Charlotte agree to home-and-home series in 2030, 2031 - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

NC State football becomes to latest in-state ACC program to schedule a matchup with Charlotte, an upstart program out of Conference USA.

This will be a home-and-home series; the first game will take place in Raleigh in 2030, with a rematch set for Charlotte in 2031.

NEWS: Charlotte 49ers and NC State finalize a home-and-home football series for 2030 (Raleigh) and 2031 (Charlotte).

— Matt L. Stephens (@MattStephens) November 5, 2020

Charlotte has played football at the FBS level since the 2015 season. During head coach Will Healy’s first season in 2019, Charlotte posted its first winning record (7-6) and went to its first bowl game — a loss to Buffalo in the Bahamas Bowl.

North Carolina and Charlotte were scheduled to play this season, back on Sept. 19. However, Charlotte was forced to cancel that game due to concerns with COVID-19 in its program. Last weekend, Charlotte traveled up I-85 for a matchup with Duke, which the Blue Devils won 53-19.

Meier’s Creek Brewing Co. forging a new empire in Cazenovia (Dining out review) (PS; $; Paventi)

American restaurants speak volumes about themselves through the simple pairing of a hamburger and beer. This classic combination reveals the culture and vibe of the establishment, the skill of the kitchen and clientele it hopes to attract. It’s the unifying element of the world’s finest restaurants, the diviest of dive bars and everything in between.

The farmhouse burger ($15) at Meier’s Creek Brewing Co. in Cazenovia starts with Wagyu beef raised at a nearby farm and is prepared to order and crowned with melted fontina cheese, greens and homemade tomato jam. The latter imparts a bit of heat from added chilies, as well as an acidity to offset the creamy cheese.

The rich flavors of the beef cuts through it all. Wagyu beef has a high fat content from the cow’s breeding and diet, rendering an extremely juicy, intensely flavored product. We wished it was a little bigger, Wagyu burgers shrink when the fat cooks away.
