Welcome to National Metal Day!

Throw on your leather jacket, turn up the stereo, and raise up those devil horns, it's National Metal Day! Proclaimed by VH1 Classic (which has since been replaced with MTV Classic), National Metal Day honors metal artists and music. The first observance took place on November 11, 2011. For 11 days during the lead up to the day, VH1 Classic showed concerts, movies, videos, and specials related to metal music. The 11-day metal celebration culminated with the premiere of the first installment of the metal documentary series Metal Evolution. A similar run of programming was aired the second year. For example, during the lead up to the day in 2012, VH1 Classic premiered America's Hard 100, a 10-hour-long countdown of the top 100 rock songs of all time as voted by viewers. That Metal Special, a special hosted by the hosts of The Metal Show, as well as a premiere of Judas Priest at the US Festival 1983, were shown on National Metal Day in 2012.

Why all the 11s? Why is the holiday held on the 11th day of the 11th month, and why was it first celebrated in 2011? In This is Spinal Tap, the 1984 mockumentary about a fictitious metal band named Spinal Tap, guitarist Nigel Tufnel, played by Christopher Guest, talks to documentary filmmaker Marty Di Bergi, played by Rob Reiner, about how his amps go up to 11 instead of 10. Di Bergi asks if the amps are louder than other amps, and later asks, "Why don't you just make 10 louder and make 10 be the top number and make that a little louder?" Tufnel responds, "These go to 11." Explaining the exchange doesn't do it justice—it needs to be watched. It should be of no surprise that VH1 Classic has aired This is Spinal Tap as part of their programming for National Metal Day.

Syracuse punter Nolan Cooney overcame cancer at 16, leads ACC in yards (DO; Hillman)

Nolan Cooney was back to playing sports three days after receiving his last chemotherapy treatment. It was his plan all along. The then-high school junior knew the state semifinal basketball game would be on March 7, and he set a goal of playing that day.

At the Community College of Rhode Island’s Vincent A. Cullen Field House, Nolan tapped the scorer’s table and walked onto the court. Peers — and rival fans — chanted his name, waving towels and cheering. Everyone in attendance knew of his testicular cancer diagnosis and subsequent recovery, said his father Joseph Cooney.

“It was one of those cool, made for TV moments when he came in,” Joseph said. “I don’t think it was emotional for him because he expected to be there. This was his goal and he knew he was going to be there.”

Days before, Nolan was nearing the end of his nine week treatment, which included over 30 chemotherapy infusions at the Lifespan Cancer Center in The Miriam Hospital. The medicine drained his energy, sapped his hunger and prevented him from doing what he loved: being a three-sport athlete.

Dino Babers counting on Joe Biden to help Syracuse's recruiting (247sports.com; Howe)

Could President-elect Joe Biden somehow contribute to better recruiting for the Syracuse football program? Current Orange head coach Dino Babers certainly thinks so.

Biden is a Syracuse alumnus, having graduated from the University in 1968 with a law degree.

Following Syracuse’s 16-13 loss to Boston College over the weekend, Babers was asked about his thoughts on Biden winning the presidency.

"To have the opportunity to be the head football coach at the university where the president-elect graduated from, I think is huge," Babers said. "Not only is it a huge honor, but I think it’s a huge recruiting advantage when you go around the country and say, 'Hey, come to Syracuse University. You can be a president of the United States."

Joe Biden Is Potentially Giving a College Football Program a Big Recruiting Advantage - Sportscasting | Pure Sports (sportscasting.com; Wysong)

When several media outlets named former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden as the next President of the United States, not many people probably had sports on their minds. However, that was maybe not the case with a particular college football coach, as Syracuse head coach Dino Babers has thought about how Biden’s win in the 2020 Presidential Election could actually help his program. In fact, Biden could potentially give the Orange a pretty big advantage in recruiting.

Joe Biden went to law school at Syracuse

According to Sports Illustrated’s All Syracuse, Biden has become the first Syracuse alum to be named as the president-elect. He ultimately graduated from law school there in 1968. That is not his only tie to the school, though, as his late son Beau Biden also graduated from law school there in 1994, and his late first wife, Neilia Hunter, went to Syracuse as well.

He has since returned to the school multiple times for commencement and to give other speeches, according to Sports Illustrated. He has also supported the school’s sports teams over the years, as Biden even gave the Orange basketball team a pep talk after their loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels in the 2016 Final Four.

“What a hell of a run,” Biden said, according to Bleacher Report. “Thank you for all the joy you gave us this year.”

College football odds, picks for Week 11 in ACC: Boston College aims to repeat upset history vs. Notre Dame (cbssports.com; Patterson)

During the broadcast and in the aftermath of Notre Dame's epic 47-40 double-overtime win against Clemson, historical lines were being drawn to another epic moment in Fighting Irish football history. On Nov. 13, 1993, another defending ACC champion and No. 1 team in the AP poll was in town for a late-season battle of undefeated teams. It was one of the many games to receive "Game of the Century" promotion and it delivered on the hype, with Notre Dame jumping out to an early lead and defending it down to the last play of the game in a 31-24 win.

But the pursuit of a national championship during that 1993 season, which was apparent after a promotion in the polls, came crashing down the following week when Boston College nailed a game-winning field goal as time expired to log a 41-39 victory. So now after taking down No. 1 Clemson and jumping into the driver's seat for the ACC Championship Game and a College Football Playoff berth, who happens to be up next on the schedule? That's right, Boston College.

This isn't just any Boston College team, either. This is the same Eagles team that nearly knocked off No. 1 Clemson in Death Valley two weeks ago. Phil Jurkovec, a transfer from Notre Dame, has given the Eagles their best passing attack in years, and Jeff Hafley has proven to be one of the best hires of last year's coaching carousel. While not ranked in the polls like that No. 17 Boston College team that beat Notre Dame in 1993, the 2020 Eagles have already proven they can hang with the best teams in the country. So while Notre Dame has to avoid a letdown after the emotional high of beating Clemson, it also has to avoid letting history repeat itself.

ACC standings & scenarios for Clemson football heading into second bye week

The Clemson football team lost its first game of the season Saturday night at the hands of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in double overtime.

The Tigers were missing starting QB Trevor Lawrence and a plethora of defensive starters on the evening, but that still doesn’t matter in terms of the hunt for a conference champion. Clemson is still ranked No. 4 in the nation, but the Tigers are now behind the Fighting Irish in both the ACC standings and national rankings following the loss.

Here’s a look at the leaders in the current ACC standings as Clemson football approaches its second bye week with conference records in parenthesis:

  1. Notre Dame (6-0)
  2. Clemson (6-1)
  3. Miami (5-1)
  4. North Carolina (5-2)
  5. Virginia Tech (4-2)
  6. Wake Forest (3-2)
Keep in mind, the ACC doesn’t have divisions this year. The two top teams will play in the conference title game.

Bowl projections: Notre Dame joins the College Football Playoff, giving the ACC two teams (usatoday.com; Smith)

What a difference one week can make.

The ACC race seemed fairly clear-cut with Clemson expected to run the table and leave one College Football Playoff spot open for other conferences to fill. That place was projected to go to Oregon last week with the Ducks and the Pac-12 getting their season started.

The outlook after Notre Dame upset the top-ranked Tigers is quite different, The ACC is positioned to put two teams in the field if Clemson can rebound turn the tables against an expected Fighting Irish in conference championship game. If that occurs, both teams would likely be in the field, joining Alabama and Ohio State, which continue to be the class of their respective leagues.

Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book finds running room as Clemson safety Tyler Venables pursues during the second overtime at Notre Dame Stadium.

Besides Oregon, the big loser from the weekend is Cincinnati. The Bearcats were in position to have a strong playoff case. It will unlikely to have much of an argument if both Clemson and Notre Dame finish with one loss. They'll be hoping for more upsets along the way before the committee makes its final call on Dec. 20.

A haze hovers over Onondaga Lake as another warm November day in Central New York continues Nov.9, 2020.. Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com

CNY breaks 89-year record in extraordinary stretch of November warmth (PS; Coin)

With a high of 78 degrees today, Central New York has set a second consecutive daily record for heat amid an unprecedented stretch of warm November weather.

The record for Nov. 10 had been 74, set in 1931. Monday’s high was was also 77 degrees.

The normal high this time of year is 51.

The two daily records cap an extraordinary stretch of warmth for November, marking six straight days of at least 70 degrees. (And Nov. 3 just missed, at 69 degrees.) The previous record was three consecutive days.

Wednesday’s expected high of 70 could extend the streak, but that will be the end of the abnormally warm weather as a cold front brings rain and lower temperatures. High temperatures over the next week will be more typical of mid-November, with highs in the upper 40s or low 50s.

And there’s even a chance of snow showers early next week. Now that’s back to normal.
