Happy Hour Day celebrates the time at bars and restaurants when alcoholic drinks are served at discounted prices. Happy hours usually take place for a period of time in the late afternoon—usually for more than an hour, and often between the hours of 4PM and 7PM. Happy hours typically occur on Monday through Thursday, and sometimes on Friday. Besides drink specials, many times free snacks or other discounted menu items are available. In 1913 the crew of the USS Arkansas began using the term "happy hour" to refer to scheduled entertainment on their ship, and by the end of World War I, "happy hours" were taking place throughout the Navy. During prohibition, drinking became popular before dinner, as diners imbibed at speakeasies before going to restaurants for their meal, where alcohol could not be served. Terms like "cocktail hours" and "happy hours" were given to these pre-dinner drinking events. After prohibition, cocktail lounges were popular spots for drinks before having dinner. A 1959 article in the Saturday Evening Post referred to "happy hour" as a time when servicemen had afternoon drinks in bars. It was shortly after this when the term started being more widely used by civilians throughout the United States. Various states have regulated or restricted happy hours, or even banned them.

Football report card: Special teams shines, defense declines (DO; Staff)
With Syracuse (1-7, 1-6 Atlantic Coast) on an off-week, our beat reporters decided to give each position group a grade from A to . No Whitman curve here.
Below is The Daily Orange’s bye week report card:
Quarterback
Anthony Dabbundo: B
I really don’t believe Syracuse’s issues on offense begin at the quarterback position. Tommy DeVito showed flashes of what he can do, but he needs more time and better receiver play. Sometimes he holds the ball too long, but he’s not close to Syracuse’s biggest problem on offense. Rex Culpepper may have been in over his head, but even JaCobian Morgan flashed some promising signs against Boston College. If you’re looking for SU’s offensive issues, look elsewhere.
Danny Emerman: C+
It’s tough to give the quarterback position a grade here, considering how much turnover there’s been. DeVito, as expected, was Syracuse’s most effective passer, but even he took too many sacks and threw two uncharacteristic interceptions. Culpepper wasn’t the answer, and it’s probably too early to tell for Morgan, who impressed in his first start. Syracuse’s offense — designed to create big passing plays — is 86th in the FBS for explosive play percentage. A good portion of the blame has to fall on the Orange’s QBs.

Sciria: Another Syracuse football season to forget about (auburnpub.com; Sciria)
The Syracuse football team is on its bye week. Go ahead, make your jokes. Bye is favored by three points. It's an old joke but I doubt SU fans are laughing.
It's been that kind of season for the Orange, a 1-7 record, a five-game losing streak, fan apathy, wondering when basketball season starts, the usual.
Yeah, it's been bad. Injuries at key positions, players opting out because of COVID-19 (which no one can blame them for), younger players getting their feet wet. There's a list of reasons why Syracuse is struggling.
And yes, other college football teams are dealing with the same types of issues, so why should anyone feel bad for the Orange?
I don't think SU head coach Dino Babers wants anyone's sympathy nor would he accept it but there are times when you just need to say, let's forget about 2020 and move on.
Fans may talk about firing the coach but I doubt that's going to happen, not this year.
Babers guided the Orange to a 10-3 record just two years ago. That mark earned him a contract extension and likely a pay raise. I doubt the Syracuse athletic department wants to buy out that contract, especially during a pandemic that has seen massive cuts in college sports.
So for better or worse, Babers and Syracuse will remain together for the foreseeable future and I don't know if he is the problem with SU football.

ACC FB TV Selection Order (RX; HM)
ACC FB TV Selection Order
The order in which TV networks select football games used to be public knowledge, but more and more it's wrapped in secrecy. For instance, we know Fox and ESPN each get to pick first on half of the weeks of the Big Ten regular season. While we can certainly infer who went first some weeks (and if you just say "whoever gets Ohio State" you'd be right more often than wrong), there are others we can't really be sure about.
In the ACC, the draft order of games is complicated by the fact that ESPN is picking for multiple networks - primarily ABC, ESPN, and the ACC Network. However, until the contract expires (in the year 2525 or whenever), Sinclair also gets some picks thanks to the old Fox RSN deal.
A user on CSNBBS who goes by "Orangefan" posted some interesting thoughts on this subject:
...Here's what I understand the draft order to be:
- ABC/ESPN gets three picks before anyone, but I believe the previously scheduled Friday night game counts against these three. The third of these, which previously commonly ran on ESPN2 before the ACCN, will generally be assigned to the ACCN.
- ACCN, by virtue of the buyout of the Raycom contract, gets the next pick.
- Next comes FSN/Sinclair.
- ACCN then gets a leftover game from ESPN rights that used to end up on ESPNU.
- In a week in which FSN/Sinclair gets two game, they get the next, usually last, pick.
- ACCNX gets any games that are not selected for telecast.

2020 ACC Football -- and Basketball, Too (bl;ogtalkradio.com; podcast; Klown)
I will be discussing the 2020 ACC football season, including the big Clemson vs. Notre Dame game -- rap a bit about the upcoming men's and women's basketball season -- with Jeff Fan and Matthew, aka Hokie Smash, from All Sports Discussion ACC blog.
- Notre Dame picked up a huge win over Clemson, albeit against a team that started a backup QB who is a true freshman and that was without its top defensive linemen. Is Notre Dame now the team to beat in the ACC, even with a healthy Clemson?
- The AP has Virginia and Louisville favored to win the men's and women's regular season title, respectively. The guys and I have some beef with the AP, find out who we think the favorites should be.
Notre Dame football: ACC leading Jurkovec on decision to leave Irish (fightingirish.com; Shepkowski)
Phil Jurkovec is the latest name on a long list of quarterbacks to come to Notre Dame with sky-high expectations only to see things fail to play out the way both sides probably had once hoped.
Jurkovec entered with the 2018 recruiting class and saw his first game action in the same game Ian Book took over the starting reigns, a blowout victory over Wake Forest in late September of that fall.
But Book’s success mixed with the team success meant playing time was a lot harder to come by than many expected it to be for Jurkovec.

Holliday: Road to Charlotte now congested for ACC hopefuls NC State, UNC :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; Holliday)
NC State and North Carolina, neither of which has won an ACC football title during the lifespan of people under 40, began the weekend with at least some hope of playing in the league’s 2020 championship game in Charlotte.
NC State made a strong bid to move up in the race to play at Bank of America Stadium next month, building a 10-point lead over fellow contender Miami. But the Hurricanes dominated the fourth quarter and handed the Wolfpack its third conference defeat.
North Carolina took care of business on the field, routing Duke, to remain in the cluster of teams with two ACC losses. However, the Tar Heels lost control of their destiny when determined Notre Dame overcame perennial champion Clemson in two overtimes.

Remote outposts and secretive states: The last places on Earth without COVID (PS; AP)
From Argentina to Zimbabwe, from the Vatican to the White House, the coronavirus has spread relentlessly. It’s been confirmed on every continent but one and in nearly every country. Yet a few places have yet to report even a single case of infection. Some have been genuinely spared so far, while others may be hiding the truth. Here’s a closer look:
PACIFIC ISLANDS
The largest cluster of countries without the coronavirus is in the South Pacific. Tonga, Kiribati, Samoa, Micronesia and Tuvalu are among the small island nations yet to report a single case. They haven’t been spared from the pandemic’s effects, however.
Tonga managed to keep the virus out by stopping cruise ships from docking and closing the airport in March, says Paula Taumoepeau, the president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He says the government even imposed a lockdown, even though there were no known cases. These days, only people who have first tested negative are allowed to return on occasional repatriation flights. He says he finds it hard to believe the confirmed death toll in the U.S. alone exceeds twice his entire nation’s population of just over 100,000.
“I think the government has done a good job keeping COVID away from Tonga, but it has had a big impact on businesses, especially tourism and accommodation. It’s very, very bad,” Taumoepeau says. “None of the businesses have escaped.”
