National-Mutt-Day-1024x640.jpg

Welcome to National Mutt Day!

National Mutt Day celebrates mixed breed dogs, and was created by Colleen Paige, a pet and family lifestyle expert and animal advocate, who also created days such as National Dog Day, National Puppy Day, and National Cat Day. The goal of the day is to embrace, save, and celebrate mixed breed dogs by creating awareness about the great numbers of them in animal shelters that are in need of a home. Mixed breed dogs make up the largest percentage of dogs that are abandoned and euthanized, and make up about 80% of dogs in shelters. In an effort to further raise awareness, National Mutt Day takes place on two days during the year. The hoped for result of the day is that people visit animal shelters and adopt a mixed breed dog, or possibly donate their time and money to shelters.

Insider’s Preview: Syracuse (247sports.com; O'Malley)

Dear Mr O'Malley, Syracuse played West Virginia in the Camping Bowl...

Attrition leveled Syracuse’s 2020 Football season nearly from the outset, and college football played amid a pandemic has furthered that fall from grace for a football program that just two seasons ago entered mid-November as the nation’s 12th-ranked team, pitted in a Yankee Stadium Shamrock Series contest against No. 3 Notre Dame.

Four quarters and a 36-3 pounding later, the eventual 10-3 Orange were relegated to third tier status—outside of real contention but on solid ground as a true Top 20 team, finishing the 2018 season with a pair of victories including a Camping World Bowl blowout of Western Michigan.

A pulled muscle in the lower back of Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey all but eliminated any hope the Orange had of competing with the No. 3-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Yankee Stadium in 2018.

That season, Dungey was the heart and soul of a Syracuse offense that averaged 40.2 points per game, good for 11th in the nation. But once he went lame in the first quarter against the Irish, the offense sputtered its way to a measly field goal and Notre Dame left the House That Ruth Built with a grand slam, 36-3 victory against a top-15 opponent.

Coming off a 10-win season, there was optimism that after Dungey graduated, his replacement in Yankee Stadium — Tommy DeVito — would allow the Orange to remain a top-tier program in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Instead, Syracuse has experienced a steady free fall ever since, finishing 5-7 in 2019 while averaging 28.2 points per game. The 2020 edition has been much, much worse, with the Orange averaging just 17.5 points per game (118th among Football Bowl Subdivision programs).

The Orange is currently 1-9 under fifth-year head coach Dino Babers and is at the closing stage of the team’s worst season since head coach Greg Robinson was at the helm from 2005-08 and averaged 2.5 wins per year.

Notre Dame Football Primer: #2 Irish return home to face Syracuse - UHND.com - Notre Dame Football, Basketball, & Recruiting (uhnd.com)

Fresh off a top-20 road victory in Chapel Hill, the Fighting Irish head back home for Senior Day in South Bend. Unfortunately, the students have all left for this semester, but this will still be an unforgettable home game for many of the Notre Dame Seniors. The Irish will be facing the upset-minded Syracuse Orange, who look to play spoiler in this unusual December matchup in South Bend.

Essential Game Info:

  • Game Time: December 5th at 2:30 pm ET on NBC
  • Location: Notre Dame Stadium, South Bend, Indiana
  • Matchup History: The Irish are 6-3 all-time against the Syracuse Orange (Last Meeting 2018: Notre Dame won 36 to 3)
  • Current Odds: Notre Dame -34.0
Weather Forecast

The current forecast for GameDay shows a 20% chance of precipitation with a high of 40 degrees and a low of 31.

Syracuse Details:

  • Conference: Atlantic Coast Conference
  • Head Coach: Dino Babers
  • 2020 Record: 1-9 (1-8)
  • 2019 Record: 5-7 (2-6)
Syracuse Storylines:

Uncharacteristically bad season for Dino Babers. These two programs last met back in 2018 at Yankee Stadium, and the anticipation was certainly different. Back then, Notre Dame was ranked #5 at 10-0, while the Syracuse Orange came into the contest ranked #15 at 8-2. A top-15 matchup was the headline in New York City that afternoon, but the Orange have not been the same since.

Quarterback Rex Culpepper headlines the offense. In 2020, Culpepper is 76 for 161 (47.2%) with 843 passing yards, 8 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. The Syracuse Orange Quarterback has 23 rushing attempts for -72 yards through 10 games. While the Syracuse Offense has used a variety of quarterbacks, the offensive line has relinquished a total of 37 sacks this year.

Key Syracuse Orange players. The rushing attack is led by running back Sean Tucker, who has 114 attempts for 525 yards (4.6 yards per carry) and 3 touchdowns. The leading receivers for the Orange are Taj Harris and Anthony Queeley. This fall, Harris has 50 receptions for 664 yards and 5 touchdowns, while Queeley has 33 catches for 336 yards and 1 score.

Notre Dame Storylines:

Ian Book continues his elite level of play. Since the Clemson matchup, Book has played like one of the best quarterbacks in the country. The fifth-year senior has taken over games with both his throwing and running capabilities. Last weekend, the Irish quarterback went 23 for 33 with 279 yards and a passing touchdown. On the ground, Book had 8 rushes for 48 yards.

'Unselfish': The Immeasurable Impact of Chris Elmore (SI; Payne)

"Adversity" is the word to describe Syracuse's 2020 season. A season that almost never happened. Slammed by injury, tangled in transition, and sucker-punched by a pandemic, Syracuse is somehow on its way to playing an uninterrupted 11 game schedule. It's easy to look at a 1-9 record and ask, "What went wrong?" But it's more worthwhile to ask, "How were they able to go the distance?" Ask that question to any number of Syracuse players or coaches, and you'll hear the same name over and over again. Chris Elmore.

"Chris Elmore is so unselfish," Syracuse head coach Dino Babers said during his Monday press conference.

"I mean, We would not have been able to finish the season without him. There would have been 11 no-contests without Chris. And I can't thank him enough for the unselfish act he did in keeping us afloat and keeping us running through these games."

Elmore agreed to take on the unenviable task of trading in his fullback No. 5 for an offensive lineman's No. 63, joining the unit perhaps most targeted and blamed for the team's offensive woes in 2019. The position group wasn't only taking punches from critics but from eviscerating injuries as well. Denied access to the talents of Florida transfer OL Chris Bleich, Babers looked to Elmore to keep this team together.

Running into No. 2 Notre Dame (SI; Payne)

One game left. Just sixty minutes of game clock to go before Syracuse head coach Dino Babers and the rest of the Orange can shut the door and finally walk away from what has been a nightmarish 2020 football season. The only thing standing between them and winter break bliss is the No. 2 ranked team in the country: the undefeated Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9-0). So instead of a gentle and genial farewell, it's more likely to resemble Fresh Prince's Uncle Phil tossing Jazz out of his Bel-Air home.

Yes, the 1-9 Syracuse Orange are sprinting toward the finish line despite being unable to run anywhere lately. In addition to a fourth-down spike as time expired, Saturday's 36-29 loss to NC State will be notoriously remembered for Syracuse's embarrassing lack of a run game. On twenty-five different attempts, Orange rushers could only muster a measly three yards on the ground. To put it more impressively, Orange runners ran a total of nine feet against the Wolfpack. It's incredible to think the Orange were within seven points when they couldn't even run for seven yards. Head coach Dino Babers said after the game that he knew they were lucky to be that close.

Syracuse Football Top 25 Players of All-Time: No. 25 Eric Dungey (itlh; Peelman)

No. 25 Eric Dungey – QB (2015-2018)

Syracuse football

Some may argue that Eric Dungey does not belong on a list among the Top 25 Syracuse Football Players of All-Time, but hear me out. Eric Dungey is not only one of the most beloved players by Syracuse Football fans in its’ long storied history, but he is also one of its best statistically speaking as well.

When he arrived on campus, he was a thin but talented kid from Lake Oswego, Oregon. He was underrecruited and overlooked, but luckily SU saw his talent and nabbed him before someone else saw what they did: a winner.

He did not start right off the bat his freshman year. In fact, he only got his chance to be the starting quarterback after a devastating season-ending injury to starting QB Terrel Hunt. In his first snaps in an Orange uniform, mind you against Rhode Island, he went 10 of 17 passing, compiled 114 yards through the air, with 2 passing touchdowns, and had eight attempts rushing for 20 yards in a convincing 47-0 victory, according to ESPN.com.

Though those numbers are far from pretty, it was more than what was expected from the freshman quarterback. He looked poised and comfortable in the pocket, and looked beyond his years. He would go on to have an amazing rookie season, playing in eight games and finishing with a 3-5 record overall in games he played in that season and had an 11:5 touchdown to interception ratio in those games.

ACC sked changes see ND lock up spot in finale (ESPNM; Adelson)

The ACC announced a series of scheduling changes Tuesday that allowed Notre Dame to clinch a spot in the ACC championship game Dec. 19.

In addition, the ACC has changed its testing procedures, requiring teams to have a PCR test administered on Thursdays so they can receive their results before traveling for games.

Among the scheduling changes to note: Both Notre Dame and Clemson now will have an open date Dec. 12, a week before the ACC championship game in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Irish had been scheduled to play Wake Forest, while the Tigers did not have a game scheduled for that day. Though Florida State wanted to play Clemson on Dec. 12 after their game was postponed, the Tigers did not want to go back to Tallahassee to play. As a result, the ACC decided it would evaluate the three teams in contention for the championship game -- Notre Dame, Clemson and Miami -- on a nine-game conference schedule.

Because the Irish hold all tiebreakers, they secured their spot in the game. Notre Dame, which is playing as an ACC football member for this season only, plays Syracuse on Saturday. If Clemson beats Virginia Tech on Saturday, it would secure its spot in the ACC championship game. If Clemson, Notre Dame or Miami cannot play this weekend, the ACC has the option to reschedule games on Dec. 12, as needed.

The ACC just made a brilliant move to protect its national championship chances (footballscoop.com; Barnett)

We’re always making up the rules as we go in college football, but especially so in 2020. And in that spirit, the ACC made a brilliant adjustment on Tuesday.

The three ACC teams still in contention for the league championship — Notre Dame, Clemson and Miami — will now be evaluated on 9-game conference schedules, not 10. As a result, the Notre Dame-Wake Forest and Clemson-Florida State games have now been canceled. The Irish, 8-0 in conference play, have now officially clinched a berth in their first and only ACC Championship; 7-1 Clemson clinches a berth with a win at Virginia Tech. In the event of a Clemson loss, Miami can win their way in with wins over Duke and North Carolina. (Notre Dame hosts 1-8 Syracuse on Saturday.)

How we get there: Alabama beats Florida in the SEC CG (to eliminate the Gators); Clemson beats Notre Dame in the ACC CG, and they both remain in the top four; Ohio State either wins the Big Ten championship or finishes at least 6-0. (Note: according to the OP, "the ACC has a 25% chance to send multiple teams to the playoff, the best among the Power 5 conferences.")

Axe: SU-ND to be most anticlimactic season finale ever (PS; $; Axe)

Saturday will be the 10th meeting between Syracuse University and the University of Notre Dame in football.

Don’t bother to wake up the echoes, it will be the most anti-climatic of them all.

No.2 Notre Dame is a serious national championship contender and has already claimed a spot in the ACC Championship game.

Syracuse is licking its wounds after an embarrassing 36-29 loss to NC State, ended on a fourth-and-goal spike (yes, that really happened.)

McDonald’s giving away 10K free McRib sandwiches for No-Shave November (PS; Cote)

If you’re clean-shaven and hungry, you’re in luck.

McDonald’s announced Monday it is giving away 10,000 free McRib sandwich to people who show the company a photograph of their freshly shaven face, according to a statement from the fast-food chain.

The giveaway aims to both honor the return of the McRib on Wednesday and recognize those who grew a little scruff for the No-Shave November charity.

The restaurant giant is collaborating with No-Shave November - a nonprofit dedicated to fundraising for cancer research, prevention, and education - for some “added good,” McDonald’s said.

If a customer buys a McRib on Wednesday, their purchase will go toward supporting a donation to the charity’s cancer initiatives, according to McDonald’s.

“No-Shave November is a month-long journey where we ask participants to put down their razors and ‘get hairy’ in the name of cancer awareness,” said Monica Hill, senior executive director of No-Shave November. “We’re thrilled McDonald’s is supporting this important cause, getting both the bearded and the non-bearded involved beyond November simply by purchasing a McRib.”

Those wanting to get a McRib on the house must post a picture of their “cleanly-shaven or baby-smooth face” on a public Twitter or Instagram profile using the #Shave4McRibSweepstakes and @mcdonalds tag, but Instagram and Twitter stories will not work.
