Welcome to National Cupcake Day!

Today is dedicated to cupcakes! The first mention of a dessert with the qualities of a cupcake was in American Cookery in 1796, and the first time the term "cupcake" was used was in 1828. There were two different definitions of cupcakes—also known as cup cakes—at that time. One type of cupcake was so named because it was baked in a container that looked like a cup. These were pottery cups, molds, or ramekins, and predated muffin tins. This is the definition that is still in use. The other type of cupcake was so named because of its recipe, which was measured out by the cup, instead of being weighed (that type of cake appropriately became the pound cake). For instance, a recipe may have contained a cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of flour, as well as eggs. These were sometimes baked in cups, but were also often baked in tins. Cupcakes use the same basic ingredients as regular cakes, and can be topped with frosting and other decorations, and can be filled as well. It is unclear when National Cupcake Day was created, although media articles referencing the day date back to at least 2008.

Rochester DL Moss plans to sign in February, still 'set on' SU (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football is expected to sign the majority of its Class of 2021 during early National Signing Day on Wednesday. Only one prospect in that 21-player pledge class has stated his intention to ink his binding letter of intent in February: defensive lineman Jaelin Moss.

Moss, a three-star prospect from Rochester, said in a text message that he's "still set on Cuse!" He declined to discuss his reasoning. The senior at Fairport (N.Y.) High School committed to the Orange in April after SU defensive coordinator Tony White and defensive line coach Vinson Reynolds led an aggressive effort to land him.

“It wasn’t building Jaelin up that he’s the next best thing in New York,” former Fairport head coach Marc Vitticore said after Moss's commitment. "It was, ‘We think you have a lot of potential, but here are the things we need to see from you to be the best player and human being you can be.’

Manny Diaz spoke to Ed Reed about 66-13 1998 Miami football loss to Syracuse (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

Head coach Manny Diaz spoke to Hurricanes legend Ed Reed for an hour following the 62-26 loss by the Miami football team to North Carolina.

When Manny Diaz hired Ed Reed to be the Chief of Staff for the Miami football team helping to change the culture was one of the reasons. Reed can relate to the 62-26 blowout loss the Hurricanes suffered to North Carolina on Saturday. In 1998 Reed and Miami lost 66-13 to Syracuse.

Reed was a redshirt freshman in 1998 when the Hurricanes lost that game to then Orangemen. Miami finished the season with a 49-45 upset number three and previously undefeated UCLA. The Hurricanes capped the season with a 46-23 victory over their now ACC rival North Carolina State in the Micron PC Bowl.

Miami will have a chance to do the same this season in their bowl game that is still to be determined. Diaz told the Joe Rose Show on Monday morning that he and Reed spoke for an hour following the loss to North Carolina and Reed related the loss to Syracuse and how the team recovered the following week.

Miami will have about two weeks before it plays its next game after the 36 point loss to the Tar Heels. Miami did not have a week in between their loss to Syracuse and victory over UCLA. The Hurricanes played the game on December 5 after it was moved from September because of Hurricane Georges.

Syracuse Football Top 25 Players of All-Time: No. 11 Don McPherson (itlh; Peelman)

Syracuse Football has had a long history of success. We look back at some of the best players to play at Syracuse University. Up next, No. 11: Don McPherson.

Most fans when they think of quarterbacks who played for Syracuse Football the first name that often comes to mind is Donovan McNabb. There’s nothing wrong with that as McNabb was an incredible athlete in his time at Syracuse, but it does take away from just how good his predecessor Don McPherson was.

McPherson played for Syracuse Football from 1984-1987. He was great passing the ball, but what a lot of people don’t remember is he also rushed the ball a ton as well and often to great success. A good way to describe him is a more polished form of Eric Dungey (also on this list). The only knock on McPherson’s career is his lack of a good pro career after Syracuse.

Though McPherson didn’t start games until his sophomore year, he quickly made a name for himself. In his sophomore year, he completed 85 passes for 1,469 yards and 12 touchdowns, with only five interceptions, according to Sports-Reference.com. He also rushed 157 times for 489 yards (3.1 yards per carry) and seven touchdowns.

In his junior year, he picked up right where he left off, completing 142 passes for 1,827 yards, 12 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also rushed 191 times for 523 yards (2.7 yards per carry) and six touchdowns.

If Army-Navy game can have fans, why can’t Carrier Dome? (Your Letters) (PS; $; Letters to the Editor)

To the Editor:

Will someone please explain to me why I am denied access to the Carrier Dome to watch Syracuse University football and basketball? Our governor almost daily touts the need for wearing masks and social distancing, and yet our future admirals and generals who attended the Army-Navy game on Saturday are allowed to stand shoulder to shoulder to cheer on their teams. And college and professional sporting events in other states allow fans, most notably Notre Dame. Are the officials who permit this somehow exempt from responsible behavior ? As the saying goes: What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Hot and Cold Takes for Notre Dame VS Clemson... ROUND 2 for ACC Championship (onefootdown.com; Gough)

HERE WE GO

Hello everyone. What a wild ride it has been this year. First off, I appreciate all of you who participate in this every week. I don’t often get a chance to say thank you, but thank you! This column has been a bright spot during these strange times. Your enthusiasm, creativity, and support week in and week out has meant the world to me, SO THANK YOU. Ok enough of that mushy stuff let’s get down the HOT AND COLD TAKES for the ACC Championship matchup between the Clemson Tigers and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

P.S. Can we take a second to laugh at the fact that ND made the ACC Championships in their only year in the ACC? LOL at the crowd who have been ragging on ND to join a Conference...

Cold Take

Kyle Hamilton. Pick. Finally.

We’ve been waiting folks. Kyle Hamilton has had a very very good year. His stats haven’t popped off the charts, but anyone who watches knows how dominant of a player he has been. He has elite range against the pass and the run, while also being a dominant tackler. Howevvvvver, he has not come up with a pick this year (though he was robbed vs. Phil Jurkovec). I will stand by this fact though...big time players, make big time plays, in big time games (shoutout Santana Moss). Hamilton enters this game as probably the top safety in college football, against a generational quarterback in Trevor Lawrence. This was a matchup we were robbed of last time, and it should be a fun one on Saturday. Look for Hamilton to break on a crossing route in a big moment for a pick. I think for the Irish to win this game, there needs to be a big turnover and I think it will fall on our sweet prince, Kyle.

Yellow Pad bowl projections: ACC title game will shape rest of bowl order :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsports.fan.com; Giglio)

Filling out the ACC bowl lineup is different in 2020. Of course it is, everything about 2020 is different.

Virginia, after Saturday’s loss to Virginia Tech, became the third ACC team to opt out of a bowl game. Boston College and Pittsburgh made the same decision earlier in the week.

Given the challenges in isolating and testing for the players and staff, and risk of exposure to COVID-19, it’s not surprising that teams (driven by the players’ best interests) would decide that the 11-game regular season was enough.

— Joe Giglio (@YellowPadStats) December 14, 2020
One important factor was also the potential heartbreak of waiting on campus (through the holidays) for another three or four weeks only to have the bowl game canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.

First-year Boston College coach Jeff Hafley said that he had linebacker Max Richardson tell the rest of the players about the decision to end the season.

Clemson Football: ACC completely whiffed on commissioner search (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

Clemson football fans aren’t going to be happy with ‘lead candidate’ for ACC Commissioner

Clemson football fans have watched from a distance as the Atlantic Coastal Conference has conducted its search for a new commissioner.

At one point, Clemson President Jim Clements was seemingly becoming a top candidate for the position, but he eventually turned the job down as he wanted to stay in Tiger Town for the foreseeable future.

Now, the ACC reportedly has its candidate to replace John Swofford.

According to reports by ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, the ACC is closing in on hiring Northwestern AD Jim Phillips to take over the new role.

Phillips has had success at Northwestern, spearheading several key projects including a $270 million project for athletic facilities, and he was the pick among Big Ten athletic directors to become the next commissioner of the conference before presidents and chancellors stepped in and hired Kevin Warren instead- talk about another bad decision by those university leaders.

It’s not that Phillips is a bad hire from the Clemson football perspective, it’s just a major whiff from the ACC as a whole

Phillips has no ties to the ACC.

As a matter of fact, the only relative tie to the conference is that he was once an associate athletic director at Notre Dame before the university had any kind of partnership with the conference.

Ex-SU Assistant Lea Named Vanderbilt Head Coach (spectrumlocalnews.com; Larson & AP)

Vanderbilt has hired Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea as its new football coach, bringing back a Nashville native and former Commodores fullback to revive the program.

Lea will be introduced next week at a news conference. He currently is busy helping No. 2 Notre Dame (10-0) prepare to play No. 4 Clemson on Saturday in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game with a spot in the College Football Playoff on the line.

Vanderbilt athletic director Candice Lee thanked Notre Dame's president, athletic director and coach Brian Kelly for their cooperation during the hiring process. Lee said it's important to everyone, including Lea, that he fulfill his obligations to Notre Dame.

“Clark Lea is the leader we trust to continue the challenging but exciting work that will elevate the Vanderbilt football program to unprecedented heights,” Lee said in a statement Monday night.

Lea coached the linebackers at Syracuse for three seasons under Scott Shafer, helping develop Zaire Franklin into an All-ACC caliber player and three-time captain. In 2014, the Orange were one of four FBS teams to allow fewer than 10 rushing touchdowns, joining Alabama, TCU, and Ole Miss. He's been Notre Dame's defensive coordinator for the last three seasons. The Fighting Irish made the College Football Playoff in 2018 behind a defense that ranked eighth in the nation in yards allowed per play (4.53).

The 38-year-old Lea is a Nashville native who played baseball at Birmingham-Southern and Belmont before walking on as a fullback at Vanderbilt, where he played from 2002-04. He is a two-time graduate of Vanderbilt, having earned a graduate degree in political science.

Joe Godley, 70, is a lifelong Syracuse native, born just across from where the Carrier Dome would eventually rise up, and has sold sports programs at the Dome for all it's 40 years. He longs for the day fans can swell through the doors once again once the coronavirus pandemic subsides. N. Scott Trimble | nstrimble70@me.comN. Scott Trimble | nstrimble70@m

From the Carrier Dome to the War Memorial, when there’s no fans, we all pay a price (PS; $; Carlson)

A customer walked into the Ale ‘n’ Angus Pub last week, hoping to support a local restaurant this holiday season by purchasing a gift certificate.

Owner Randy Beach turned them down.

“I need to be able to sleep at night,” Beach said. “I can’t sell them if I don’t know I’ll be able to honor them.”

Without his customary Syracuse Crunch crowds this winter, he doesn’t know how long he’ll continue to stay open.

Visits to the cozy bar and restaurant are a tradition for many local hockey fans, the easiest stop for a pre-game meal or a cheaper beer before attending a hockey game at the War Memorial.

The restaurant serves one of Central New York’s best burgers -- the winner of a state award for best burger four times in the past 11 years -- and Beach says it does four times the business it did before he bought it just more than 15 years ago.

He spent 15 years building a good reputation, good burgers and a good business. The pandemic is threatening to wreck it all in less than a year.

While the coronavirus pandemic has taken a toll on all of us, the financial toll has been greatest in businesses built on events, travel and crowds.

Along with the loss of business from sporting events, businesses that thrive on crowds have been walloped by capacity limits, travel restrictions, orange zone restrictions and a general discouragement from gathering in groups.

“This is the event district down here,” Beach said. “And we’re right in the middle of it. The way our business works down here, everything we make all fall, winter and spring, we spend in the summer just to keep us alive.”

Our winter months are gray and cold, but they bring some celebration for sports fans in Central New York when the region’s passion, Syracuse University basketball, begins its season.

The arrival of fans is an annual boon for local businesses and workers. This year they are all grappling with the possibility of going without.

It’s difficult to put a financial number on the impact of sports in Central New York but, as it was preparing to put a new roof on the Carrier Dome, Syracuse University funded an economic impact study for events held in the building.
