Welcome to Inauguration Day! Congrats Joe!

The inauguration of the president of the United States is a ceremony to mark the commencement of a new four-year term of the president of the United States. The inauguration takes place for each new presidential term, even if the president is continuing in office for a second term. Since 1937, it has taken place at noon EST on January 20, the first day of the new term, some 72 to 78 days after the presidential election, except for three occasions when January 20 fell on a Sunday. In those years, the presidential oath of office was administered on that day privately and then again in a public ceremony the next day, on Monday, January 21. The most recent presidential inauguration was held on January 20, 2017, when Donald Trump assumed office; the next is scheduled to take place on January 20, 2021, when Joe Biden will assume office.

Ja'Had Carter runs after an interception against Notre Dame

College football: Syracuse places three defenders on freshman All-America teams (nny360.com; St Croix)

The Syracuse University football team is represented by three defensive players on Freshmen All-America Teams.

True freshman safety Ja’Had Carter was honored by Rivals on Tuesday to join cornerback Garrett Williams and linebacker Stefon Thompson, who previously garnered the accolades from The Athletic and the Football Writers Association of America, respectively.
Carter started 10 of 11 games in the back of SU’s 3-3-5 defense and led the Orange secondary with 67 tackles, which was seventh among ACC defensive backs and two shy of sophomore linebacker Mikel Jones for the team lead. He added two interceptions, a forced fumble and recovery, and three pass breakups.

Williams led the Atlantic Coast Conference and ranked seventh nationally with 12 passes defended and 10 pass breakups. He picked off a pair of passes, returning one for a touchdown against Clemson quarterback and presumptive top NFL Draft pick, Trevor Lawrence.

Thompson started seven of 10 games during his debut campaign and was the first true freshman to claim a starting spot out of preseason training camp since 2011. He tallied 35 tackles, including 7 ½ for loss, three sacks, and a forced fumble.
The Orange started a program-record six freshmen on defense multiple times down the stretch of its 1-10 campaign this past fall.

Notre Dame hopes to keep safety Houston Griffith from leaving program (indystar.com; James)

Marcus Freeman has followed two Notre Dame football players on Twitter since being named the program’s new defensive coordinator: safeties Kyle Hamilton and Houston Griffith.

Freeman has apparently been working to convince the latter to stay at Notre Dame for a chance to play alongside the former. Griffith entered the NCAA’s transfer portal earlier this month, which allowed other programs to actively recruit him as a potential transfer.

A source told the Tribune that Freeman and Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly have been in contact with Griffith in an effort to convince him to stick with the Irish. Players are allowed to remove themselves from the transfer portal without transferring, but the original school does not have to allow that player to remain on scholarship with its program.

Griffith’s opportunity at Notre Dame remains clear. He could potentially start alongside Hamilton despite being beat out by sixth-year former cornerback Shaun Crawford at the strong safety position last season.

Since safety Houston Griffith entered the transfer portal earlier this month, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly and new defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman have been working to convince Griffith to say at Notre Dame, a source told the Tribune.

Griffith, a former four-star recruit, would be offered a bit of a clean slate at Notre Dame with a new defensive coordinator and a new safeties coach, who has yet to be named. Defensive backs coach Terry Joseph, who oversaw the safety position at Notre Dame the past three seasons, left the Irish earlier this month for a similar job at Texas, a source previously confirmed with the Tribune.

The interest in Griffith from other programs appears to be widespread. The list of recent followers of Griffith’s Twitter account include staffers from Florida State, Georgia, Oklahoma, Oregon, Nebraska, Illinois, Missouri, Syracuse, Kansas State and more.

Ex-SU Coach Marrone Favorite for Alabama OL Job (spectrumlocalnews.com; Larson)

Former Syracuse football coach Doug Marrone is set to join Nick Saban's staff at Alabama, emerging as the team's top target to become the Tide's new offensive line coach, according to ESPN.

Alabama is finalizing a deal with former Jaguars HC Doug Marrone to become the Tide’s next OL coach.

Marrone was an offensive lineman for Syracuse in the 80’s and had some action in the NFL.

He has also been the head coach of Syracuse, Buffalo Bills, and the Jags.#RollTide pic.twitter.com/moxlJmxhW0
— Sidelines - Bama (2020 National Champions!) (@Sidelines_Bama) January 19, 2021
Marrone was fired by the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this month after posting a 1-15 record in 2020, losing his last 15 games. He went 15-17 in two years as head coach of the Buffalo Bills after spending four seasons at his alma mater. Marrone posted a record of 22-25 in four years at Syracuse, winning two Pinstripe Bowl titles in 2010 and 2012.

According to ESPN, Tide coach Nick Saban, also a former SU assistant, was working to finalize a deal with Marrone Tuesday night. Marrone would be reunited with new Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien, the former Houston Texans' coach who worked with Marrone at Georgia Tech back in the 1990's.

Glory Days (tylerstarnews.com; Yevuta)

More water trickled over the dam and I was reminded that my college roommate’s dad, Carlin Dodrill, had once been offered the line coaching job at Syracuse University by Coach Ben Schwartzwalder. Mr. Dodrill declined the job and had a successful career as a basketball, baseball, football coach and teacher at Follansbee High School. You have to know that college assistants didn’t make a ton of money back then and Mr. Dodrill truly loved Follansbee. I wondered what the connection was between Coach Dodrill and Coach Schwartzwalder so I did the appropriate internet research. Coach Schwartzwalder’s first coaching job was at Weston High School followed by a stint at Sistersville High School in 1935. He left there to coach at Parkersburg High School. They were both Ohio Valley coaches and must have become friends. When Coach Schwartzwalder went to Syracuse, he won a National Championship in 1959 and was known for the running backs he coached who included Jim Brown, Heisman Trophy winner Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, Larry Nance and Larry Csonka.

To me, even more impressive than their football credentials was their service during WW11.Lieutenant Commander Hayes commanded a PC 1251 in the Palau Islands invasion and the destroyer-escort USS Rinehart in both Atlantic and Pacific operations. As a captain in the 82nd (CO of Company G of the 507th) Schwartzwalder earned distinction during the invasion of Normandy and battles that followed during the last days of the war. He played crucial roles in the capture of La FiËre-Causeway and Sainte-MËre-…glise, crucial points of entry into France during the D-Day invasion. By the time the 507th reached the battle for Hill 95, they had suffered more than 65% casualties. Schwartzwalder continued his campaign all the way into Germany and acted as military governor for the town of Essen for a period of six months. He was awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, four battle stars, Presidential Unit Citation and was promoted to the rank of Major for his actions during the invasion. When he was personally decorated by General Matthew Ridgway, the General said, “Ben, I never expected to see you here to receive this award.”

My old pal, H. John Rogers, used to say that the greatest title you could bestow on a person was to call them Coach and that their greatest honor was to say that they fought for their country. During WW11, Mr. Dodrill served our country in North Africa and Italy. Hayes and Schwartzwalder checked both boxes.

Rx for the Next TV Contract Look-In (RX; HM)

Rx for the Next TV Contract Look-In

The ACC has sold its media rights for football to ESPN through the 2036 season, and while I'm sure the fees paid to the league probably increase each year of the contract, the only way to "jump" the payouts are through a favorable change in membership (so-called "composition clause") or by adding a new broadcast feature (so-called "look-ins").

Now, while most people have a fairly good (I won't say great) understanding of how the composition clause works, it's rare to find a fan who has a clue about the look-ins. What are they, what are they for, and how might the ACC use it to their benefit?

What is the "Look-in" clause, and what's it for?

Those two questions are closely related: to understand what it is, you need to understand what it's good for, and vice versa. Here's a statement posted on Warchant.com:
the ACC’s new contract with ESPN calls for three separate “look-in” periods -- times when executives from both entities will be able to sit down and discuss whether the contract terms needs to be renegotiated. The first of those previously unreported “look-ins” will occur in 2021, just two years after the new ACC Network is scheduled to launch on cable and satellite television.
On the surface you might think that if the ACC outperforms certain contract parameters there will be an automatic renegotiation, right? While that sort of language could've been included in the contract, that's not really a "look-in". To put it simply, a look-in means the parties agree to come to the table - with no pressure on either side - to discuss changes which might be mutually beneficial. A good example is what happened at the last look-in: that's when the ACC and ESPN agreed to launch the ACC Network. This view is supported by a statement Commissioner Swofford made to Tigernet in an interview before the ACCN launch decision was made:
...we were more comfortable going with ESPN and having all of our revenues totally guaranteed for the full amount of our contract and it’s term and have the opportunity during that term to consider a potential channel with ESPN as we move forward. That’s why we have a five-year look-in, a 10-year look-in.
As we know, that did happen - ESPN and the ACC together launched the ACC Network. Both sides put something into it, and both sides benefitted. That's what look-ins are about.

How Might the ACC Benefit from Future Look-ins?

Clemson football: 3 biggest offseason questions facing Dabo Swinney’s Tigers in 2021 (fansided.com; Butler)

Dabo Swinney‘s Clemson football team is the best in the ACC, but that does not mean they do not have questions to answer this offseason.

Clemson may have won its conference six years in a row, making the College Football Playoff every single time. However, the Tigers have not won a national championship in three seasons and have only won one in the last four. That would be a remarkable benchmark for most programs, but Clemson is not most programs. If they want to remain a dynasty, they need to win it all in 2021.

Overall, Clemson will again be one of the four best teams in the land, as the Tigers have not been challenged by anyone in the ACC for any extended stretch in the last half decade. At this juncture, it is all about winning national titles at Clemson. Anything short of that standard will be viewed as disappointment. Naturally, the Tigers have some questions to answer this offseason.

3 biggest offseason questions for the Clemson Tigers

3. Has Clemson been figured out in the College Football Playoff?

While it may be more of a playing in New Orleans issue than anything, Clemson has lost its last two playoff games, including three in a row in The Big Easy. Clemson lost to the LSU Tigers in the national championship game two years ago. The Tigers fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the 2021 Sugar Bowl in the College Football Playoff. They also lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2019.

It may be coincidence, but do we really want to believe in coincidences these days? While there is no conspiracy theory surrounding Clemson’s continued issues at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, we do have to wonder if the Tigers have lost a bit of their luster in the College Football Playoff. They got spanked in their last two games vs. LSU and Ohio State. So what is up with that?

It could mean the days of the two concurrent dynasties at Alabama and Clemson are over with. No longer is it a foregone conclusion that these two southeastern football powers will meet in the College Football Playoff National Championship game annually. Heck, it is no longer a guarantee that both teams will end up making the four-team field. They have made it in five times together.

Joe Biden shouts out Syracuse in emotional speech before inauguration (PS; $; Herbert)

Joe Biden shouts out Syracuse in emotional speech before inauguration - syracuse.com
President-elect Joe Biden is carrying his experiences in Syracuse with him to the White House.

Biden will be the first Syracuse University alumnus to be president of the United States when he takes office on Wednesday. During an emotional final speech in Delaware before his inauguration, he gave a shout-out to his alma mater.

“It’s deeply personal that our next journey to Washington starts here. A place that defines the very best of who we are as Americans,” Biden said Tuesday at the Major Joseph R. “Beau” Biden III National Guard Center in Wilmington, named after his late son.

“I know these are dark times. But there’s always light,” he continued. “When I came home after graduating from Delaware and then going on to law school in Syracuse, I came home after law school to Wilmington, to our county. And it had gone dark. Dr. (Martin Luther) King was assassinated. Wilmington had been in flames. The National Guard patrolled the streets. That turmoil inspired me to become a public defender: A step I never anticipated would lead me towards this improbable journey.
