Welcome to Macintosh Computer Day!

Macintosh Computer Day, celebrated on January 24, celebrates the same day in 1984 when the very first Macintosh computer, the predecessor of today’s Apple computers, was introduced to the public. Macintosh broke into the consumer market as the alternative option to other computers, ushering in a new age of freedom and creativity, and continues to be the preferred system for creatives and techies across the globe.

The Macintosh project began in 1979 when Jef Raskin, an Apple employee, proposed a user-friendly, cost-effective computer for the average consumer. He wanted to name the computer the McIntosh, after his favorite type of apple, but the spelling was changed to “Macintosh” for legal reasons. In September 1979, Raskin was permitted to start hiring for the project and he on-boarded his long-time colleague, Brian Howard. Later on, he would hire Steve Jobs as project lead, sealing the future of Apple computers in technological history. However, in a 2013 interview, Steve Wozniak implied that he had led the initial design and development phase of the Macintosh project. He temporarily left the company after experiencing a traumatic airplane crash in 1981, at which point Jobs took over. In that same interview, Wozniak stated that the original Macintosh ‘failed’ under Jobs and that it was not until Jobs left that it became a success. He credited the Macintosh’s ultimate success to people like John Sculley “who worked to build a Macintosh market when the Apple II went away.” Reaching a 300 million valuation almost overnight, Apple became the fastest-growing company in U.S. history. With over 50 companies salivating for a bite of the Apple, one company stood out above the rest — IBM. And so began one of the most ruthless rivalries in corporate history as many promising competitors drastically fell by the wayside.

Monday Musings: Football Recruiting Nuggets, Basketball Analytics (SI; McAllister)

1. BRADFORD REMAINS A PRIORITY

Junior college offensive lineman Jakob Bradford remains a significant priority for Syracuse. The Orange are recruiting him very hard and are in communication regularly. Bradford is still targeting a National Signing Day (February 3rd) decision, but Syracuse is in a good spot right now. Virginia Tech and Missouri continue to express strong interest behind the scenes, but Syracuse is doing a great job with their relationship here.

2. NEW 2021 DEFENSIVE END OFFER

Class of 2021 Coastal Carolina defensive end commit Chase Simmons picked up an offer from Syracuse on Sunday. Syracuse has been recruiting him for several weeks, and he says he hears from either Ryan Bartow, Tony White or Vince Reynolds at least every other day. Michigan State, South Carolina and Tennessee have also expressed interest. Simmons committed to Coastal Carolina in November, but did not sign the following months despite that. He is keeping things close to the vest regarding where he will sign in a week and a half, but given that Syracuse just offered, they must think they have a legitimate shot. This is one to watch leading up to signing day.

3. SYRACUSE TEAM RANKINGS IMPROVEMENT

TeamRankings.com is a sports analytics website. They do college basketball analytics that give a percent chance a team has to make the NCAA Tournament after each result. Following Syracuse's second loss to Pittsburgh, they were given an 18% chance to make the NCAA Tournament. Following the win over Virginia Tech, that percentage has increased to 41%. That is quite an improvement.

Santiago raises football profile after move from Utica to Arizona (uticaod.com; Birnell)

Daniel Santiago made a big decision when the high school football season in New York state was in doubt.

Santiago, a 6-foot-2, 290-pound standout defensive lineman, chose to depart Utica and Thomas R. Proctor High School and head to Arizona to play football for his junior season in the fall.

"Would we have the same competition (here) in the spring?" Santiago said of the decision. "I couldn't turn it down."

The move helped bring a notable bonus this week when Santiago was offered a football scholarship to play at University of Arizona. He’s looking forward to possible offers from other schools following the one from the Pac-12 Conference member.

Defensive lineman Daniel Santiago left Thomas R. Proctor High School in Utica to play his junior year of football in Arizona.

New York state's usual fall football season was pushed back because of concerns with the coronavirus. The sport, deemed by state health officials to be high risk for the spread of coronavirus, is now set for the fall II season beginning in March. However, the sport still needs clearance to play.

Santiago’s decision involved moving to Scottsdale, Arizona, to live with his uncle Arnold. He appeared in all six games of the season with Horizon High School.

“It was good. It was a lot better competition than I played in New York so far. People take it a lot more serious,” said Santiago, who also is known by the nickname “Boobie.” “It is just a different level of competition out there. The aspects are a different level. It is a lot more important to people.”

Syracuse Football: The most amazing 2021 schedule – Alabama and … (itlh; Adler)

Sure, the Atlantic Coast Conference plans to announce its league match-ups next Thursday, Jan. 28, and Syracuse football already has four non-conference battles on the books.

While it’s not known as this time whether the ACC will remain with a one-division look for 2021, as it did in the recently concluded stanza when the Orange went 1-10, Nate Mink of Syracuse.com writes that “The pre-pandemic 2021 SU conference schedule included games against Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, North Carolina State, Wake Forest, Boston College, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech.”

Of course, given the novel coronavirus pandemic and the logistical and travel challenges that it brings, we’ll have to wait and see until Jan. 28 what the ‘Cuse ACC docket will entail.

Mink also notes that the Syracuse football non-conference calendar features a road duel at Ohio, as well as Carrier Dome clashes versus Rutgers, Liberty and Albany.

Syracuse football offers 2 transfers: Texas OL Willie Tyler, North Texas DB Cam Johnson (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football extended offers to two players in the transfer portal on Thursday: Texas offensive lineman Willie Tyler and North Texas defensive back Cam Johnson. Tyler is listed as a grad transfer in the portal, per a source, meaning he is eligible to play immediately in 2021. Johnson is not.

Tyler is a 6-foot-7, 335-pound redshirt sophomore who opted out of the 2020 season. He didn't play in his first year at UT after spending the 2018 season at Iowa Western Community College. Tyler previously signed with Garden City Community College in 2017, but left following a coaching change, per his Texas Athletics bio.

A Racine, Wisc., native, Tyler was rated three stars and the No. 24 JUCO offensive tackle in the Class of 2019 by 247Sports composite ratings. Other schools to offer him that go-round included West Virginia, SMU and Louisiana Tech. Before that, Tyler played for Racine Lutheran High School, primarily on the defensive line.

The 5-foot-11, 182-pound Johnson has significant experience as a two-year starter at cornerback for UNT. He started all 10 games as a senior last fall, racking up 49 tackles, one interception, a forced fumble and three break-ups. He held the same role in 2019, recording 58 tackles and four pass break-ups. Over four years with the Mean Green Johnson appeared in 38 games and totaled 151 tackles.

Syracuse WR Signee Umari Hatcher Discusses the Orange, Training During Pandemic (SI; Garcia Jr)

Syracuse wide receiver signee Umari Hatcher has not had a senior season to date. Because of that, he has looked for other ways to compete and stay sharp as his season is set to begin in the near future. He recently traveled to the Battle Miami seven on seven event in order to get some work in, and SI All-American's John Garcia Jr. caught up with him to discuss Syracuse, why he is at the event and more.

"Just trying to do what I do best," Hatcher said. "Catch the ball. Make plays. Things like that. Make plays. That's it."

During the pandemic, without a season, Hatcher has done his best to try to stay sharp and improve his skills.

"Just worked out at home," Hatcher said. "Just practiced every other day. Worked at the field, sometimes by myself."

The 6-4 wide receiver committed to Syracuse back in September and signed with the Orange last month. He picked Syracuse over offers from Indiana, Maryland, Michigan State, North Carolina, Penn State, Virginia and Virginia Tech among others. Hatcher said it was the relationship he had with the coaches that put them over the top.

Toughest Rebuilds of 2021 (RX; HM)

Toughest Rebuilds of 2021

From Rivals: THE TOUGHEST REBUILDING JOBS IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Here's a peak at the Rivals article (ACC-related comments only, of course), with my comments below...

We all know who No. 1 is, but what are some other tough rebuilding jobs on the horizon, new coach or not? Here’s [Mike Farrell's] top 10 [including his comments for the ACC teams; click the link to read the rest].

1. Tennessee
2. Florida State — Remember the Jimbo Fisher national title? That seems like decades ago as this program has fallen further than any other in recent years and Mike Norvell has a ton of digging to do as the Seminoles have gone 21-26 the last four years.
3. Texas
4. Penn State
5. Virginia Tech — The days of Frank Beamer are long gone and this once dangerous program has turned average under Justin Fuente.
6. Rutgers
7. Arkansas
8. South Carolina
9. Michigan State
10. Louisville — They looked really good a couple of years ago and then this season happened. Kentucky is getting stronger in-state and the ACC will start to return to form. Will Louisville be one of the uprisers? This year was a joke.

ACC Alumni in the 2021 Superbowl (RX; HM)

ACC Alumni in the 2021 Superbowl

Now that we know who the Superbowl participants are, we can break down how many ACC alumni players are on each team's roster...

Kansas City Chiefs Active Roster (ACC alumni)
Player's Name#PosHTWTAgeExpCollege
Sammy Watkins14WR6-1211277Clemson
Bashaud Breeland21CB5-11195287Clemson
Dorian O'Daniel44LB6-1220263Clemson
Derrick Nnadi91DT6-1312243Florida State
Harrison Butker7K6-4205254Georgia Tech
Juan Thornhill22S6-0205252Virginia
Reserve/Injured#PosHTWTAgeExpCollege
none
Practice Squad#PosHTWTAgeExpCollege
Maurice Ffrench89WR5-1120023RPittsburgh
As you can see, the defending champs are stocked with 3 Clemson Tigers. However, the Chiefs only have 3 other ACC alumni on the active roster, plus one more on the practice squad, all from different schools.
By contrast, the Buccaneers have only one Clemson Tiger and only five ACC alumni on their active roster (although a 6th is on injured-reserve).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Active Roster (ACC alumni)
Player's Name#PosHTWTAgeExpCollege
Bradley Pinion8P6-5240266Clemson
Ross Cockrell43CB6-0190297Duke
Ted Larsen62G6-33233311NC State
LeSean McCoy25RB5-112103212Pittsburgh
Jordan Whitehead33S5-10198233Pittsburgh
Reserve/Injured#PosHTWTAgeExpCollege
T.J. Logan22RB5-11195264North Carolina
Practice Squad#PosHTWTAgeExpCollege
Garrison Sanborn52LS6-12403511Florida State
C.J. Prosise21RB6-1225265Notre Dame
Any of these players could conceivably make a difference in the big game - or it could be decided by players without ties to ACC football (maybe not even to power five football). That said, I do like Sammy Watkins' chances...

County gobbles up land in Clay to lure a tech manufacturer; some neighbors don’t want to move (PS; Moriarty)

Onondaga County is moving aggressively to expand a vacant business park in Clay, in hopes of luring major high-tech manufacturers.

The property buying spree is sparking anger among property owners whose homes are suddenly smack dab in the middle of the planned business park.

The county controls nearly 1,000 acres on the north side of Route 31 east of Caughdenoy Road. It plans to expand its holdings to 1,253 acres — an area three times the size of the New York State Fairgrounds — in hopes of attracting such high-tech manufacturers as semiconductor fabricators.

New marketing materials for White Pine Commerce Park include a map showing the park stretching east along Route 31 from Caughdenoy Road all the way to the Cicero town line. In the middle of the planned park is Burnet Road, which contains 37 homes.

“How can they do that?” said Michelle Nuzzo, who has lived on the road for 12 years. “They’re marketing our homes, and they don’t even own them.”

Great pics of Roth, Tirico and Kalas when they were students. I am not sure but that might be Kroft and Berman in the bottom row of the WAER picture.

Is WAER being taken in by Newhouse a good thing?
