Welcome to National Peanut Brittle Day!

Peanut brittle first appeared in print in 1892, but variations of the candy have been around longer than that. Its creation may have been inspired by halva, an Arabic confection that first appeared in the Middle Ages, which includes honey, nuts, and seeds in its ingredients. One account claims it started as a Celtic dessert that was brought to the United States by Irish immigrants. But, by most accounts it was created in the United States, most likely in the South, where the growing of peanuts is plentiful. One story says a Southern woman created it by mistake, in 1890, when making taffy. She accidentally added baking soda instead of cream of tartar to the recipe, but didn't want to waste it, so she kept cooking and added some peanuts; she ended up with a crunchy brittle instead of a chewy taffy. Another story, a little more far fetched, claims that it was created by folk hero Tony Beaver, who was reputedly the cousin of Paul Bunyan. By this account, Beaver saved a town from a flood by pouring molasses and peanuts into a river. Regardless of who first made it, once the first piece is eaten, it is hard to stop. Thankfully, today it can be eaten all day.

Syracuse football offers Coastal Carolina DE commit Chase Simmons (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football extended an offer to Class of 2021 defensive end Chase Simmons on Sunday, he announced on Twitter. A Coastal Carolina commit, Simmons will be eligible to sign a binding letter of intent with a school starting on Feb. 3, National Signing Day.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Simmons is rated three stars and the No. 120 strong-side defensive end this cycle. A senior at North Myrtle Beach High School in Little River, S.C., he also holds offers from Kent State, Akron, Charlotte and Georgia State while a handful of Power-Five programs were sniffing around near the New Year.

"Blessed to receive an offer from Syracuse University!!" Simmons tweeted. "@cusecoachtw @cusefootball Thank you for the opportunity!!!"

Defensive line is a position group that the Orange could bolster with one of its four remaining scholarships. While offensive line is the top priority, expected to be addressed via the transfer market, the underbelly of the d-line took a hit before early National Signing Day. Long-time pledge Hayden Nelson suffered a serious injury late in his senior year, leading him to re-think his process and ultimately decommit from SU. He's now headed to UCLA as a preferred walk-on.

Coaches Poll College Football Rankings: ACC All-Time Greatest Programs (CFN; Staff)

Which current ACC college football programs are the greatest of all-time according to the UPI and USA Today Coaches final polls?

Using a ranking system taking all the AP final college football polls and assigning 25 points to the national champion, 24 for the final No. 2 team, 23 for the No. 3 team on down, it’s Florida State without much of a problem with Miami coasting easily into second.

One note on this – this is made up of current ACC programs and factoring in their histories. Obviously many of these programs weren’t in the ACC starting in 1950.

Again, this is based on the CFN formula. This isn’t any official ranking coming from USA TODAY or the Coaches Poll.

Below is each ACC program’s ranking after the 2020 season, followed by the points, followed by the ranking overall.

Coaches Poll: All-Time ACC Final Rankings

1 Florida State 617 10

2 Miami 521 14

3 Clemson 384 21

4 Georgia Tech 269 26

5 Syracuse 251 31

6 Pittsburgh 238 33

7 Virginia Tech 235 34

8 North Carolina 173 44

9 Louisville 113 52

10 Duke 99 60

Monday Notebook: More on the ACC football schedule, Tony Elliott rumors (tigernet.com; Hood)

Coaching rumors, the opening at the University of Tennessee, and a possible schedule release highlighted the weekend in college football. Let’s get started with what we know and what we think.

The Volunteers fired Jeremy Pruitt and that’s led to a cascade of rumors of who could be the next in line to take over in Knoxville. It’s no surprise that Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott is being mentioned for the job.

I know that some media person (maybe?) with a whopping 400 Twitter followers posted Sunday that Elliott would be named the new head coach at Tennessee today. Heck, that might happen. But people jumped all over it and part of my job is to chase some of these rumors. I have three people who I really trust in the football program tell me the same thing: as of midday Sunday there had been no contact between Elliott and Tennessee.

That doesn't mean the Vols won't reach out later, but the rumors of him taking the job Monday seem to be just that, rumors. Other writers, those who work in Knoxville, have said they don't think Elliott is the first or second or third and maybe not even the fourth choice because the program isn't excited about going the coordinator route again.

...
...
The ACC dropped a tweet that said the schedule will drop this Thursday, and after doing some more digging and talking to more people around the league, I now feel about 80-percent confident that Clemson’s home dates will be on Sept. 11th, Sept. 18th, October 2nd, October 30th, November 13th, and November 20th.

One question that one league source has centers on Boston College and whether the league will make the Eagles play in Clemson a third consecutive year. Maybe they will and maybe they won’t, and that’s one of the things we can’t wait to find out. If the league did that, then they would have to flip one of the division schools supposed to play in Clemson this season that maybe didn’t play against the Tigers last year, like NC State or Louisville. The league could send either of those two schools to Death Valley and then make the Tigers travel to Boston College. Or, they could leave the schedule as it sits today and make the Eagles travel to South Carolina for the third year in a row.

Best ACC FB Games of 2020 - ESPN

Even in a bad year, there were some good football games. These were the best according to ESPN; I've included the comments for ACC games (you'll have to click the links to read the others):

College football's top 50 games of the 2020 season, 50-26
50. Buffalo 70, Kent State 41 (Nov. 28)
49. Alabama 63, Ole Miss 48 (Oct. 10)
48. Middle Tennessee 40, Rice 34 (Oct. 24)
47. Oklahoma State 37, Miami 34 (Dec. 29)

We didn't get all that many total classics in bowl season, but... in Orlando, Oklahoma State exploded for a 21-0 lead over Miami in the de facto Jimmy Johnson Bowl (OK, the Cheez-It Bowl), then watched the lead slowly disintegrate, even after Miami star quarterback D'Eriq King got hurt. But freshman Brennan Presley, who entered the game with one career catch, caught six balls for 118 yards and three scores, and his 16-yarder in the fourth quarter ended up making the difference.

2020 All-ACC Academic Team Announced (theacc.com)

Atlantic Coast Conference Jim Tatum Award winner Kingsley Jonathan of Syracuse headlines the 2020 All-ACC Academic Football Team, announced Monday by the league office.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

All 15 ACC Football member institutions were represented on the team. Duke led all schools with 11 selections, followed by Clemson (9) and Miami (9).

The ACC has selected an All-ACC Academic Football Team every year since 1954. The team was chosen from a pool of ACC football student-athletes who were nominated by their schools.

Pitt’s Jimmy Morrissey (C) and Virginia’s Dillon Reinkensmeyer (OT) earned selection to the All-ACC Academic Team for the fourth time. Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence (QB) and Will Spiers (P), Duke’s Michael Carter II (S), Rakavius Chambers (OG) and Marquis Waters (S), Louisville’s CJ Avery (LB) and Pitt’s Deslin Alexandre (DE) are three-time selections.

Thirty-two members of the All-ACC Academic Football Team also earned some form of all-conference recognition. Lawrence, Morrissey, Notre Dame’s Tommy Kraemer (OG) and Miami’s Jose Borregales (PK) were first-team all-conference. All three quarterbacks on the All-ACC team – Lawrence (first team), North Carolina’s Sam Howell (second-team) and Notre Dame’s Ian Book (third team) – are also members of the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.

Winter storm alerts issued in Upstate NY for messy mix of ice and snow (PS; $; Coin)

Winter storm alerts issued in Upstate NY for messy mix of ice and snow - syracuse.com
A storm moving through the mid-Atlantic is expected to create slushy, slippery driving conditions Tuesday and Wednesday in Upstate New York.

The National Weather Service has issued winter weather advisories for all of Upstate New York from Tuesday morning to early Wednesday morning.

Light snow is expected to reach Central New York from the south about 9 a.m. Tuesday, and the storm will stall out along the Thruway by afternoon. On the south side of that stalled area, snowfall will be light, 1 to 3 inches, with more freezing rain. Along and north of the Thruway, where air temperatures will be a little colder, expected 3 to 5 inches of snow and less freezing rain.

“Plan on slippery road conditions,” the weather service said. “The hazardous conditions could impact the (Tuesday) evening commute.”

Snow will taper off Wednesday morning, but there’s a chance of snow showers every day throughout the work week. Temperatures dip into the single digits Friday morning, and more snow could return on Sunday.
