Welcome to Rosa Parks Day!

Rosa Parks Day celebrates the legacy of Rosa Parks, a woman who is a symbol of equality, civil rights, and the American Civil Rights Movement. The holiday is celebrated on either February 4, her birthday, or on December 1, the anniversary of the date in 1955 on which she refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Various states officially observe the holiday on one of the two dates. Some municipalities officially mark the day as well. The holiday can also be observed unofficially on either date by all who wish to do so. Beyond remembering the legacy of Rosa Parks, the day promotes civil rights and equal opportunities in the present day. Events and activities are often organized by church leaders, politicians, and leaders of organizations. In classrooms, the holiday is marked with activities focused on Rosa Parks and her fight against discrimination and for equality.

Simmons to Syracuse highlights local National Signing Day; CCU football adds two transfers (P&C; Kelly)

The Grand Strand was abuzz on Feb. 3 with players signing all over Georgetown and Horry counties on National Signing Day.

Here’s a look at who landed where:

North Myrtle Beach High School

Defensive end Chase Simmons, who verbally committed to Coastal Carolina at the end of last year, decided to sign with Syracuse after receiving an offer from the Orange on Jan. 24.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound defender was named All-State and All-Region twice.

What's left for Syracuse football's 2021 class after National Signing Day? (247sports.com; $; Bailey)

Syracuse football pulled off a successful National Signing Day this year, landing its top two targets going into the day. The Orange flipped defensive end Chase Simmons from Coastal Carolina and beat out Virginia Tech for the signature of junior college offensive tackle Jakob Bradford.

After signing 19 players from the Class of 2021 in December, Wednesday was always going to be a less eventful morning. The only other player believed to be in play, defensive tackle commit, Jaelin Moss, did not sign. He could still officially join SU's class later in the cycle.

SU Athletics also announced the official addition of Mississippi State transfer quarterback Garrett Shrader, who committed in December.

What is Syracuse getting in DE signee Chase Simmons? (247sports; $; Riverso)

Syracuse football has landed a second Class of 2021 prospect on National Signing Day in defensive end Chase Simmons. Simmons flipped from Coastal Carolina on Wednesday and becomes the fourth defensive linemen to ink with the Orange this cycle.

Here's a look at what SU is getting in the 6-foot-4, 240-pound player:

Size really stands out. Athletic build, with very long arms. According to his Twitter, he has an 81-inch wingspan. Decent lateral speed for how long he is but lacks quick twitch and explosion out of his stance, and his top end speed is less than ideal – I worry about his ability to chase plays down from behind. Tough, plays with a ferocity that takes opponents by surprise.

Jakob Bradford, Chase Simmons sign with Syracuse on National Signing Day (DO; Smith)

Dino Babers and Syracuse football added two players to their 2021 recruiting class Wednesday.

Jakob Bradford, a junior college offensive tackle transfer, became the first prospect to sign with the Orange on National Signing Day when he chose SU over Virginia Tech. Roughly an hour later, defensive end Chase Simmons flipped from his previous commitment to Coastal Carolina and signed with Syracuse as well.

Bradford and Simmons made up two of the three prospects Syracuse was keeping an eye on Wednesday morning. Defensive tackle Jaelin Moss verbally committed to SU in late April, but a source told 247 Sports that he wasn’t expected to sign a letter of intent on National Signing Day. He remains committed and could join the 2021 class later in the recruiting cycle.

Syracuse now has 21 players in its Class of 2021, in addition to Mississippi State transfer quarterback Garrett Shrader, leaving three spots available. Babers is also working to replace former offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh, who left for Arizona State last week.

Clemson leads way in ACC football recruiting; UNC's class ranks No. 14 in nation - Salisbury Post (salisburypost.com; Kurz Jr)

Clemson’s most recent berth in the College Football Playoff was arguably its least successful, but a 49-28 semifinal loss to Ohio State didn’t appear to damage the Tigers’ appeal to recruits.

Six consecutive appearances in the game’s final four, with national championships in 2016 and 2018, are difficult to overlook.

The Tigers’ 2021 signing class was rated No. 5 nationally by 247Sports and the best in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Even better for coach Dabo Swinney and his staff, 12 of Clemson’s 19 incoming freshmen are already enrolled, led by five-star all-purpose back Will Shipley.

Shipley, from Matthews, North Carolina, is one of three five-stars the Tigers have signed from ACC competitor states. The other two — offensive lineman Tristan Leigh from Fairfax, Virginia, and outside linebacker Barrett Carter from Suwanee, Georgia — are among seven that will join the program after high school.

The league has two other schools — No. 12 Miami and No. 14 North Carolina — in the top 15 of the 247Sports composite rankings, with Florida State next at No. 22.

In what has become a growing trend, Mack Brown’s Tar Heels brought in 12 players for early enrollment last month, including five-star defensive lineman Keeshawn Silver and former Alabama commitment Drake Maye at quarterback.

Brown added a 19th recruit Wednesday: Dontae Balfour, a 6-foot-2 cornerback from Starke, Florida. He’s rated 17th among cornerbacks.

NOTHING DOING

Virginia Tech is not among the ACC leaders in recruiting rankings this year, with 247Sports listing the Hokies 45th overall and 10th among league schools, but coach Justin Fuente seemed content with a class that includes 10 early enrollees.

There were no additions to the 25 players the Hokies signed in December.

“It’s been over for a long time for us, you know what I mean? There’s always things out there that can happen on the second signing day, but the first signing day is becoming signing day,” Fuente said.

“You still handle some transfers and that sort of stuff but it doesn’t feel any different than any other day for me because we’ve been out of it and we’ve moved on for some time,” he said.

The Hokies have three transfers already on campus, including quarterback Connor Blumrick from Texas A&M, safety Tae Daley from Vanderbilt and defensive tackle Jordan Williams from Clemson. They expect offensive lineman Johnny Jordan, who is transferring from Maryland, to arrive after he concludes his spring semester.

IVY LEAGUE SOUTH

Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall announced Wednesday that the Cavaliers have added running back Devin Darrington from Harvard as a transfer, their third this offseason.

Darrington, from Forest Hill, Maryland, played in 22 games for Harvard and had 1,181 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. He was expected to be among the top backs in the Ivy League last season before the league canceled the season because of the pandemic.

He has one season of eligibility remaining.

Virginia, which signed 24 high school players, also added tight end Jelani Woods from Oklahoma State and cornerback Anthony Johnson from ACC rival Louisville.

ACC RANKINGS

The rest of the ACC rankings: Pittsburgh, 26th; Virginia, 31st; North Carolina State, 34th; Boston College, 36th; Louisville, 38th; Georgia Tech, 47th; Syracuse, 57th; Duke, 58th; and Wake Forest, 66th.

http://allsportsdiscussion.com/2021/02/03/5-things-i-dont-like-about-the-2021-acc-football-schedule/ (allsportsdiscussion; JFann)

The ACC recently released their 2021 ACC football schedule. We just looked at what we do like about the 2021 football, but what do we not like?

Here we go.

1) Miami vs Alabama (September 4, 2021)

Does anyone think Miami has a chance in this game? Yea I didn’t think so…

Alabama has a history of ruining season openers for OOC opponents – 2019 Alabama 42 Duke 3, 2018 Alabama 51 Louisville 14, 2017 Alabama 24 Florida State 7, 2016 Alabama 52 USC 6, 2015 Alabama 35 Wisconsin 17… Do I need to go on? Only 2017 Florida State had any business scheduling Alabama. I hope Miami gets a nice paycheck for this game, because playing Alabama to open a season virtually guarantees an 0-1 blowout loss start to the season.

2) Georgia Tech playing Notre Dame and Georgia in back to back weeks

I’m not sure who Georgia Tech made angry at the ACC offices, but playing Notre Dame and Georgia in back to back weeks to end the season is pretty ridiculous.

This is a finish just about any team in college football would struggle with, and Georgia Tech has enough trouble playing the bottom of the ACC in the current stage of their rebuild. Notre Dame and Georgia to end the season is just mean.

3) Virginia and Syracuse (November BYE weeks)

For the most part the ACC BYE weeks are pretty equitable, but don’t tell that to Virginia and Syracuse. The Hoos and the Orange have to wait until November 6th for their BYE weeks! That’s 9 straight weeks of football before a break for either team.

The ACC didn’t do those schools any favors.

4) When October is your first conference game

How did some ACC team’s schedule end up without a conference game until October? Boston College, Syracuse, Duke, and Pittsburgh don’t play a conference game until October. That is not the way to build interest in your conference races by having more than 25% of your conference not play an in-conference game to open the season. As @KevinReitmeyer pointed out to me on twitter, the ACC gives their teams flexibility on OOC scheduling. They need to mandate at least 1 conference game in September.

5) Lack of Big 12 and Pac 12 Opponents

I’m not sure the ACC understands the majority of your Power 5 OOC opponents don’t have to come from just the SEC. There is just one OOC opponent from the Big 12 and Pac 12 and that’s Virginia vs West Virginia. Maybe instead of Alabama, Miami could play a USC or Oregon instead in a far more interesting game.

Wouldn’t UNC vs Texas be fun?

The ACC missed a chance to get some eyeballs on the conference from west of the Mississippi. There’s people out there too.

Louisville Football: 2021 Opponents’ Returning Production (cardchronicle.com; Shea)

There are two things each offseason that I look forward almost as much as spring practice reports and fall camp, and they both happened in the last few days. The first item is the ACC released the league schedules for the 2021 season, giving us both the ability to plan and dream as much as we want for the next eight months.

Before we move on, I do have a small gripe that it appears we’re resuming the traditional six divisional, two crossover opponents schedule instead of a vastly superior, round robbin-schedule similar to the one we saw this past season. But that is a conversation for another day and for much nerdier people to argue about. All I’m saying is playing Virginia Tech, our closest ACC foe, once every seven years is extremely stupid. Hopefully there are some new changes with the new commissioner.

As for my second favorite off season rite of passage, former SBNation and current ESPN writer Bill Connelly released his returning production rankings for the 2021 season. This, aside from Connelly’s SP+ rating system, is one of the most impressive things he puts together. Instead of just taking the number of returning starters versus starters lost and then saying, “bam, rankings” Connelly takes the entire practice miles further by using a returning production formula that “looks at the most predictive key personnel stats — the numbers that have the most impact on improvement or regression from season to season.”
...
...
Week 1: September 6th, Ole Miss – #22 overall returning production (81%), Offense #44 (78%), Defense #20 (83%)

This is game in Atlanta on Labor Day is going to be an interesting one. Ole Miss had an okay first season with Lane Kiffin at the helm as they went 5-5 and were the only team in the country that played Alabama remotely close. Following up a decent season with coaching continuity and a team that ranks in the Top 25 in returning production is good news for Rebel Land Shark Bear fans. What’s more is that the offense was more than fine last season, and it’s the defense that needs work. Luckily for them the defense has a good foundation to build on with 83% of its production coming back.

Week 2: September 11th, EKU – N/A

Week 3: September 17th, UCF – #74 Overall (68%), Offense #59 (74%), Defense #91 (62%)

Can someone remind me why we scheduled this team? I’m not looking forward it, especially when it’ll be our third game in 11 days. I guess if there’s any good news about this awful idea is that UCF just lost their head coach to Tennessee and their returning production numbers aren’t out of this world. But still. Not a fan.

Week 4: September 25th, @FSU – #53 Overall (73%), Offense #25 (84%), Defense #90 (62%)

FSU had a hell of a 2020 season, and not in a good way. They didn’t even get to start the season before there were issues within the program, and the on-field results weren’t any better. They return a good amount from their pretty bad offense, but they return on 62% from their defense that finished #85 in SP+. Good luck, ‘Noles.

Week 5: October 2nd, @ Wake Forest – #18 Overall (81%), Offense #8 (88%), Defense #54 (74%)

Wake’s 4-5 campaign in 2020 was certainly a disappointing one following the success of 2019. And beating them handily was a great way to cap off UofL’s season and send the seniors out on a good note. But the Demon Deacon’s have some great numbers going for them in terms of what they return, especially on offense. Looking forward to them being a pain in the ass once again.

Week 6: October 9th, Virginia – #77 Overall (66%), Offense #63 (72%), Defense #95 (61%)

Virginia was a very weird team to try and figure out last year and their returning numbers don’t really help either. They ranked #55 and #57 in SP+ offense and defense, respectively, and they don’t bring back a heck of a whole lot from either unit. Looks like Bronco may need another year to rebuild before they can get back to where they were in 2019. Who knows, though?

Week 8: October 23rd, Boston College – #47 Overall (75%), Offense #22 (84%), Defense #79 (66%)

Jeff Hafley had a fantastic first season in Chestnut Hill last year and based on what they return the program should continue to rise. The high flying offense was the big story for BC last year, finishing #48 in SP+. With so much returning, it’s hard to imagine BC not taking another step forward. Don’t be surprised if the Eagles make some noise this year and Hafley gets some serious buzz.

Week 9: October 30th, @NC State – #44 Overall (76%), Offense #83 (63%), Defense #6 (90%)

NCST quietly had a solid 8-4 season last year that likely saved Dave Doeren’s job. Neither unit was particularly outstanding last year, with both finishing in the 60s and 50s, but it seems like the program has some good momentum going and with the insane amount they return on defense they should be just fine.

Week 10: November 6th, Clemson – #65 Overall (69%), Offense #118 (46%), Defense #3 (92%)

Clemson’s returning virtually nothing on offense. Doesn’t matter. Also, don’t look at their defense’s numbers.

Week 11: November 13th, Syracuse – #26 Overall (80%), Offense #26 (83%), Defense #45 (76%)

The Orange had an abysmal 2020 season and it’s unfortunately placed Dino Babers firmly on the hot seat. Hopefully with what they have coming back Dino can keep his job, but still suck enough for Louisville to beat them at home for the third season in a row.

From SI: "As Broad NCAA Change Awaits, College Football Is Facing a Recruiting Reckoning"
Excellent article which discusses several problems with the knee-jerk reaction the NCAA made to the pandemic - problems which will be coming to a head soon. Here is a money quote:

“Right now, there are a lot of kids in the portal that are not going to find scholarships,” Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby says. “There may be twice as many people in the portal as there are places to transfer...
Extra year of eligibility + immediate eligibility upon transfer + one-year scholarship-limit exemption = big problems for the 2022 season!

I am guessing this is at least in part because VT is loading up on transfers big time. Just my impression. It seems like they have lost quite a few and gained a lot of players.

Does that sound correct to you Mark?

i just read a article by pete thamel, regarding the status of babers and syracuse recruiting. essentially he states that we suck and are totally unsophisticated. i am aware that babers has not been a good recruiter in the sense that he needs to be in order to compete in the acc. i believe babers should get two more years even though i find him to have been extremely stubborn. many on this board ARE sophisticated in the recruiting realm. what has he done to be proactive in this area, and do you see any philosophical change in his approach to it as well as the offensive scheme. the article also criticized wildhack . any thoughts ??? i know people think thamel is a hack but he is imho is right at least about babers.
