Welcome to National Cut the Cord Day!

Break free from expensive cable bills on February 9th by celebrating National Cut the Cord Day! The streaming movement has rapidly grown over the past five years, and it doesn’t show any signs of stopping. As the digital world supplies more choices, it also provides the flexibility, selection, and reliability we’ve been looking for. So it’s no surprise that industry analysts estimate that up to six million people will cut the cord on traditional TV subscriptions in 2020.

As the devices for streaming continue to grow, more people look to cut the cord from cable. Whether binge-watching old favorites or catching the evening news, cord-cutters can customize a channel lineup for half the price of cable.

Syracuse football begins winter workouts during pivotal offseason (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football started winter workouts on Monday, the first official team activities of a pivotal offseason. The Orange is coming off its third one-win campaign since 1948 and looking for improvement behind a young roster and a pair of second-year coordinators. That group got little time to prepare for the 2020 season after the coronavirus pandemic ended spring practice before pads came on and significantly limited summer conditioning.

Players now have a valuable opportunity to work with strength and conditioning staff -- something that's especially important for the underclassmen who were forced into contributing roles last season. Rather than being afforded the chance to acclimate and bulk up during what would normally be a redshirt year, 13 first-year players were on the team's two-deep depth chart by the regular-season finale at then-No. 2 Notre Dame.

Freshmen defensive backs Rob Hanna (168 pounds), Aman Greenwood (180) and Ja'Had Carter (191) all became starting safeties due to injury and opt-out.

Way-too-early 2021 preview: ACC (247sports.com; Marcello)

The ACC might have been the strongest conference in the country in 2020 because of the temporary assistance of Notre Dame.

The conference did not produce the national champion, but it did provide two semifinalists in Notre Dame and mainstay Clemson.

The conference had a few upsets and provided college football the game of the year in November — Notre Dame 47, Clemson 40 in double overtime — but what does the future hold for the conference as Notre Dame returns to the ranks of the independents and Clemson turns to DJ Uiagalelei in 2021?

Let's take a look back and examine whether teams exceeded, met or fell below expectations in 2020 while also previewing what these teams are capable of achieving in 2021.

Exceeded expectations

Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-2)

2020 review: Many circled 2020 as the year Notre Dame would break through and reach the College Football Playoff, and it happened. The result? A double-digit loss to eventual national champion Alabama, perhaps the greatest national champion of the last 30 years. Notre Dame had a tremendous defense and a veteran quarterback (Ian Book) capable of winning tight games (Clemson in overtime) and managing the offense in championship atmospheres. The Irish jumped into the ACC for one season and it nearly resulted in a conference championship. A loss to Clemson in the ACC Championship and the ensuing loss to Alabama in the playoff semifinal were not desired, but it failed to tarnish a memorable season for coach Brian Kelly.

Spring Football Position Preview: Quarterbacks (SI; Black)

Boston College has yet to announce the start date of spring football, but it is never too early to start analyzing the various position groups. We begin our series looking at the quarterback room, and where each player currently stands.

Key Departure: Sam Johnson IV (currently in transfer portal)

Phil Jurkovec

No player on Boston College "broke out" in 2020 more than the transfer quarterback from Notre Dame. Throwing for 2,558 yards in just ten games, Jurkovec took Frank Cignetti's offense and ran with it. A solid thrower who is tough as nails, Jurkovec suffered two injuries in 2020 (shoulder/leg), and will need to work on getting rid of the ball a little quicker to avoid so much contact. As he continues to grow, and become even more confident in this offense, the sky is the limit for Jurkovec. There is no doubt he is heading into 2021 as not only the starting quarterback, but as possibly one of the best quarterbacks in the ACC.

Dennis Grosel

Does any team in the ACC have a more seasoned, ready to go back up quarterback than Grosel? Started the finale for the Eagles in 2020 against UVA and threw for 520 yards a team record. Honestly, kind of surprised he returned, as he has the talent to be a starter day one somewhere else. But credit to the Ohio native, he will play a valuable role with the Eagles in 2021, just like he did last year.

Matt Valecce

It seemed like a step down for Valecce in 2020 as he went from backup in 2019 to off the two deep. He has a lot of the intangibles that you would want in a quarterback, but we haven't seen it yet on the field as he seems buried behind Grosel/Jurkovec. One source I have talked to has said that he has the best arm on the team. As we saw last season, injuries can happen, especially with two quarterbacks who aren't afraid to take a big hit. The development of Matt Valecce, or other quarterbacks will be very important moving forward.

Daelen Menard

A younger player, unfortunately with practices closed we haven't been able to see what he has been able to do in the new system. Hopefully with a spring game this year we may be able to get a better read on what his ceiling is and what the Chaminade graduate will mean to the program

Emmett Morehead

A true freshman and early enrollee, Moorehead from a reports is a kid with big potential and a huge arm. Getting him on campus early is a bonus as the Eagles can work him into the playbook and get him up to speed before the season. At 6'6 he is the biggest quarterback in the room, but we shall how he translates at the collegiate level

Matt Rueve/Andrew Landry

A pair of quarterbacks that came in last season. Probably won't see any snaps this year, but their development will continue to be something to monitor.

2021 Recruiting Monopoly (RX; HM)

2021 Recruiting Monopoly

Where did the 5-star players sign?
@AlabamaFTBL, @OhioStateFB and @GeorgiaFootball snatched up nearly half of the the 5-star recruits in the 2021 class pic.twitter.com/BRxqYVmci0
— FOX College Football (@CFBONFOX) February 4, 2021
There aren't a lot of 5-star players. There just aren't. Only 33 of them in the 2021 class. But then the problem is made worse by the fact that three schools signed nearly half of them (16 of the 33) - Alabama, Ohio State, and Georgia. Clemson and Miami aren't too far behind, but... seriously, if college football really was a "free market" there would be an anti-trust investigation going on!

I don't think it's healthy for the game when most of the best players go to just a few programs. We'll discuss that in a future post...

Viggo Mortensen says new movie is a salute to Upstate NY, family dementia battle (interview) (PS; $; Herbert)

Viggo Mortensen says new movie is a salute to Upstate NY, family dementia battle (interview) - syracuse.com
Former “Lord of the Rings” star Viggo Mortensen has a very personal story to tell in his directorial debut.

The Watertown High School graduate writes, directs, produces, scores, and stars in “Falling” as John Peterson, who lives with his partner (Terry Chen) and their daughter (Gabby Velis) in California, far from the rural life he left behind at the family farm in Upstate New York. Worlds collide when John’s father Willis, struggling with dementia, comes to stay and refuses to change.

“Aliens” actor Lance Henriksen plays the older version of Willis, a codger who angrily calls his ex-wives “whores” and often makes homophobic comments in front of his gay son. Viggo lookalike Sverrir Gudnason, best known for playing tennis legend Bjorn Borg in “Borg vs. McEnroe,” plays the younger version of Willis, driving John’s mother away. Scenes flash back and forth between the past and present, to illustrate Willis’ struggles with memory and his many failed relationships.

The movie was largely shot in Ontario, but many scenes are set in Northern NY with locations resembling where Mortensen spent his formative years.

“Southern Ontario looks a lot like the other side of the St. Lawrence river,” Mortensen, 62, explained in an interview with syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.

“Just a landscape that I’m familiar with, which is why I set it in that place,” he added. “I used things that I knew very well. Landscapes, seasons, what things looked like in the ’60s and ‘70s up around there: Cars, clothes, people, houses, farms, and to some degree what they look like now.”
