Welcome to Susan B Anthony Day!

Today we celebrate Susan B. Anthony, who was born on today's date in 1820. Susan B. Anthony Day is not officially celebrated nationally. In 2011, Representative Carolyn Maloney introduced the Susan B. Anthony Birthday Act, which would have designated the third Monday in February as Susan B. Anthony Day, but the bill did not become law. The holiday is celebrated in some capacities on the state level. As of 2019, Florida is the only state where Susan B. Anthony Day is an official holiday on February 15. In Wisconsin and California, the holiday is celebrated in public schools. In West Virginia, the holiday is celebrated on election day on even-numbered years. Anthony's birthday is celebrated each August in Massachusetts. Additionally, Susan B. Anthony Day is celebrated unofficially across the country, as the birthdays of prominent historical figures often are.

Susan B. Anthony was born in Adams, Massachusetts. Her Aunt Susan, whom she had been named after, married a man named Brownell, and that is where Anthony got her middle initial from. Her family was made up of Quakers and activists, and in 1845 they moved to Rochester, New York, where they became part of the abolitionist movement. Anthony became a teacher, where she pushed for educational reforms, such as for more inclusion for girls and African Americans.

Wildhack: Athletes hosted maskless party of 50+ people amid campus cluster (DO; Kaylor)

Syracuse athletes hosted a party Saturday night with over 50 people, Director of Athletics John Wildhack said in an email to athletes, parents and head coaches.

Department of Public Safety Chief Bobby Maldonado informed Wildhack that no one in attendance was wearing a mask, according to the email obtained by The Daily Orange. DPS responded to a noise complaint made to the Syracuse Police Department, Wildhack said.

The party was held a day after SU announced its chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity was placed on interim suspension for violating public health directives. Members of Syracuse University’s Greek community hosted at least three off-campus parties last week, resulting in at least 20 new COVID-19 cases among students.

“Gatherings like this have proven to be a source of COVID-19 super-spreader events,” Wildhack said.

Wildhack didn’t specify in the email how many athletes attended the party or whether any athletes will face disciplinary action. SU Athletics did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday night.

It’s unclear if the party resulted in new COVID-19 infections. As of Sunday night, SU has already recorded 20 cases within the 14-day reporting period that began Saturday. Like last semester, the university will suspend in-person instruction if it exceeds 100 positive tests within the two-week period, which ends Feb. 26.

Rob Hradsky, vice president for the student experience, said in a campus-wide email on Friday that leaseholders of residences where the Greek community’s parties were held will face conduct sanctions, and SU will refer those who attended the parties to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. The university will also report violations to city and county authorities, he said.

Vanderbilt football adds former Syracuse staffer (saturdaydownsouth.com; Staff)

Clark Lea has made another addition to his Vanderbilt staff. Jeff LePak, a former offensive analyst at Syracuse, has updated his Twitter profile to show he is now part of the Vanderbilt football program.

Stephen Bailey of 247Sports shared on Twitter that per Lea, LePak will serve in a special teams quality control position. The move has Lepak working under another ex-Syracuse assistant, Justin Lustig.

LePak had been on Dino Barbers’ Syracuse staff from 2016-18 before leaving to be the inside receivers coach at McNeese State in 2019. He returned to Syracuse in February 2020.

Per his Syracuse bio, LePak held multiple positions during his first stint with the Orange. He was hired as Syracuse’s operations and recruiting assistant in February 2016. Later that year, LePak became the program’s special teams quality control coach, a position he held through the end of the 2018 season. The Orange fielded some of college football’s best coverage units and led the ACC in net punting in each of LePak’s two full seasons working with Syracuse’s special teams.

LePak played tight end at Eastern Illinois.

Tennessee football kicker reveals transfer destination to ACC school (allfortennessee.com; Calhoun)

The first game Brent Cimaglia ever dressed out in for Tennessee football was the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game in 2017 in Atlanta, Ga. at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Vols beat the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 42-41 in double-overtime.

Now, four years later, Cimaglia is joining that team he dressed out against. The 6’0″ 210-pound product of Fred J. Page High School in Franklin, Tenn. whose hometown is Nashville, Tenn. makes the move after three and a half years as the starting place kicker on Rocky Top.

Cimaglia’s decision to leave Tennessee football for another school in the south follows punter Joe Doyle’s decision to transfer from the Vols to the Memphis Tigers. He announced the news Sunday on Twitter.

Honored and blessed to receive this opportunity. Proud to be a yellow jacket, big things to come! @CoachCollins @CoachPopovich pic.twitter.com/i1bAnuVTUt
— Brent cimaglia (@bmancimaglia) February 14, 2021

After missing the last two games of 2020 and revealing he had been dealing with an injury all year, Cimaglia revealed his decision to enter the transfer portal in late January, just after the Vols had hired Josh Heupel as head coach. In response, Rocky Top added USC Trojans graduate transfer place kicker Chase McGrath.

Boston College "Sticks Out" to '22 Georgia Athlete C.J. Clinkscales (SI; Black)

Boston College football made a new offer late this week, as '22 Buford (GA) athlete C.J. Clinkscales announced on Twitter:

Clinkscales, does not have a rating yet on 247sports.com, and holds offers from Colorado, West Virginia and a variety of group of five schools. BC has another offer out at Buford HS, also offering VJ Payne. Shortly after receiving his offer, the 5'9 athlete spoke with BC Bulletin about his relationship with the Eagles and more.

The relationship between the Eagles and Clinkscales started with a conversation with running back coach Richie Gunnell. "He told me a few days ago that he liked my film and he was going to show it to the staff, and he called me today and said they liked my film and wanted to make an offer," he explained. The next step in the recruitment is a conversation with Jeff Hafley, which according to Clinkscales will happen on Monday.

"Boston College sticks out," he told BC Bulletin. "I’ve been watching BC for years since we see a lot of ACC coverage (in Georgia). They’re real solid. I remember watching Matt Ryan when I was real young and seeing the energy of the games."

The history of the Eagles clearly has stood out to the explosive athlete. But the current state of the program has caught his eye as well. "I think BC has a a very solid football program. The played some good teams really tough this season," Clinkscales explained. "I also like that BC is one of the top academic schools in the country."

Happy 9th Anniversary!

Hard to believe I've been writing this blog for nine years as of today. Time flies! Yes, the ACCFootballRx blog was launched on February 14th, 2012. Since that date, what are some of the biggest things that have happened in the ACC or ACC football?

2012

In 2011, Virginia Tech became the first ACC football team to ever receive an "at-large" bid to a BCS Bowl. That game was played on January 3, 2012.
As I said, this blog was launched on February 14th, 2012.
A New ACC TV Deal with ABC/ESPN - $3.6 billion over a 15 year period, triggered by the addition of Syracuse and Pitt - was announced in May. That works out to between $16 and $17 million per team per year (depending on overhead). This was almost exactly the amount we predicted about two months earlier.
9/12/2012 - Notre Dame joined the ACC for all sports except football and ice hockey, with a guarantee of five football games per season, scheduled by the ACC, with half of them being ACC home games.
We probably got the clearest expression of the relative TV value of football versus basketball from the Big East on .10/26/12
On 11/16/12 we got an important update on the new college football playoffs stating that the Orange Bowl - and it's official conference partner, the ACC - would be included as a "Contract Bowl".
Around this time Maryland announced that they were leaving the ACC to join the Big Ten. On 11/18/12, we told you that their replacement had to be Louisville.

Videos: Mark Rogers Fixes Scheduling - 2021

You didn't know scheduling was broken? Wait 'til you watch these videos from Mark Rogers, self-proclaimed voice of college football...

ACC SCHEDULE FIX

Mark's Outline:
  • 9 conference games
  • no divisions
  • protect legit rivalries
  • eliminate fake ones
  • solve unfair scheduling (.500)
In other words, Clemson would no longer play Syracuse every year, neither would BC and Virginia Tech be an annual game any more, but instead we'd get all of the true rivalries plus a mix of other games to get to a .500 composite schedule. No more having Miami play both FSU and, say, Clemson while division competitor Pitt plays Syracuse and, say, Duke.

Remington’s new owner aims to reopen Upstate New York plant with 200 workers in March (PS; $; Moriarty)

The new owner of the Remington gun factory in Ilion is shooting to reopen the plant with 200 workers in March, but the union representing Remington workers isn’t so sure.

Roundhill Group, which bought the factory in a sale supervised by a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge in September, obtained its federal firearms license in January, giving it the right to manufacture firearms at the huge Herkimer County plant, Utica’s NEWSChannel 2 reported.

Roundhill partner Richmond Italia said he plans to open the plant on Tuesday for maintenance and is targeting March 1 for the start of production, according to the report. The company plans to hire back 200 employees for the start of production and hopes to eventually bring back 800 to 1,000 employees, he said.

The company did not immediately respond to a request from syracuse.com | The Post-Standard for comment on Friday.

The union that represents workers at the plant isn’t certain of Italia’s timeline. The United Mine Workers of America said it is still negotiating a modified collective bargaining agreement with Roundhill.

The union has also objected to the terms of employment included in Roundhill’s job offers to the first 200 workers because the letters stated their employment would be “at will.” That terminology means they could be fired for any reason, a provision the union said would violate its existing collective bargaining agreement.

Happy Anniversary Mark. You do a really nice job covering the conference.

Any updates on ACCN revenues? The Comcast contract with Disney ends at the end of this year. Will Comcast reach agreement with Disney before the football season starts?

GT estimates that the ACCN paid out about $2.5M per school for 2019-20. Why so low? It didn't launch until August, and many current distributors didn't sign up until much later. There are probably some startup costs being recovered as well. I expect ACCN revenue to increase considerably in future years.
