Peace Corps Through the Decades: Photos and timeline

Sixty years after its founding, the Peace Corps’ mission to promote world peace and friendship remains more relevant than ever. The Peace Corps, at its core, is about celebrating diversity around the world, building relationships and opportunity, and fostering equity and inclusion.

Since 1961, more than 241,000 Americans have served our country and the global community as Peace Corps Volunteers, living and working alongside local leaders to catalyze change. After Volunteers complete their service, they return to the United States with new sets of skills, deep knowledge of other cultures and global issues, and long-lasting relationships with people from their host countries.

Tyler Details Syracuse Virtual Visit (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football has looked to the transfer portal this offseason to help improve the roster for the 2021 season. With two transfers already committed (quarterback Garrett Shrader and defensive back Jason Simmons), Syracuse is looking for more. One of its top targets is Texas offensive lineman transfer Willie Tyler.

Tyler is a grad transfer with three years of eligibility remaining. He can play guard or tackle, and would be a big addition at a critical position. Syracuse hosted Tyler for a virtual visit on Monday.

"It was good," Tyler said. "It was just really a school tour, some lessons on history of it, the facilities, and masters program options. It all stood out honestly. It was a great call. It was just (Director of Recruiting Kramer) Cook was on the call. I'm getting on the phone with (offensive line coach Mike) Schmidt (Tuesday)."

This will not be the first conversation Tyler has had with Syracuse's new offensive line coach, but he is looking forward to continuing to develop that relationship.

Syracuse football in contention for 2022 LB Edwin Wilson Tara Kolenge (itlh; Adler)

Edwin Wilson Tara Kolenge, an elite 2022 linebacker who hails from Canada, has trimmed his list of potential suitors down to eight, and Syracuse football is still in the running.

The 6-foot-3 Kolenge recently disclosed via Twitter his group of eight finalists, and they are the Orange, along with Virginia Tech, Boston College, Rutgers, West Virginia, Howard, Indiana and Nebraska.

Kolenge’s hometown is in Montreal, Quebec, and he is currently a junior at the Clearwater Academy International in Clearwater, Fla.

According to his bio on the 247Sports Web site, where he is described as an inside linebacker, Kolenge holds a total of 15 scholarship offers. Mike McAllister, the publisher of SyracuseOnSI, notes in a piece that the ‘Cuse was the first to offer a scholarship to Kolenge, with that offer arriving in April of 2020.

I Give All The Glory To God. Thank you to all the coaches that have offered me a scholarship to play and study at their universities. At this point, these are the schools I will be focusing on. I will still give other schools that want to offer their due diligence though. pic.twitter.com/RrkNYU5mtu

Clemson football: The next challenger in the ACC on the horizon (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

The next challenger for Clemson football in the ACC is on the horizon?

The Clemson football program has dominated the ACC for more than the last half-decade and nothing seems to be standing in the Tigers’ way of much more success within the conference in the future.

Clemson football continues to recruit at a high level and the Tigers are consistently competing for CFB Playoff berths. In the last six years, Clemson has won two National Titles, competed in six-straight CFB Playoffs and won six-straight ACC Championships.

While no Clemson football fan wants to see this stint of success come to an end, there’s no doubt that building up the conference would be a major asset to this Tiger program, which consistently has to hear from national media about how the ‘ACC is not as good as the other Power-5 conferences.’

Interestingly enough, ESPN reporter Heather Dinich posted a Tweet last week that provided some intrigue as to who the next contender in the ACC might be. Dinich said that the North Carolina Tar Heels, under Mack Brown, have the potential to become a CFB Playoff contender.

Talked w/ @CoachMackBrown this week. He's very confident – as he should be – in what he's got coming back. He's gotta find some RBs, but they've got CFP potential. You don't have to be named Clemson or Ohio State to do it, and UNC has potential – POTENTIAL – to prove it.

For the first time in years, FSU has depth at running back Cox)

In 2020, it was a unit that overperformed. Especially considering the circumstances.

Not only was Florida State transitioning into a new coaching staff and offensive system without a true offseason. They were also tasked with replacing one of the leading rushers in school history.

After carrying the Seminoles offense in 2019 with 1,144 rushing yards and 18 total touchdowns, junior Cam Akers declared for the NFL and was selected 52nd overall in the draft by the Los Angeles Rams. His departure left a huge hole in the backfield.

Akers toted the ball 231 times in 2019, 168 carries more than the second-leading Nole rusher, Khalan Laborn (who wasn’t returning either). Upon his hiring, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell was instantly tasked with retooling and reloading a depleted running back unit.

Norvell made quality moves to instantly improve the situation, adding two transfers while successfully holding onto the commitment of consensus four-star recruit Lawrance Toafili (he originally pledged to Willie Taggart in August of 2019).

Overall, Florida State’s running backs provided a very dependable rushing attack last season, particularly with four different quarterbacks starting under center in just 9 games. FSU averaged 202 yards a game and 5.2 yards-per-carry on the ground in 2020, 62 yards more than their average of 140 rushing yards the year prior.

Now with a chance for a true spring, the FSU running back room is balanced and has several enticing options. Let’s take a look at what second-year running backs coach and recruiting coordinator David Johnson has to work with in 2021.

It's always been true that most of the non-conference games are played at the beginning of the season, followed by conference games (with a few more non-conference match-ups sprinkled in here and there). The 2021 season is no different. Why does that even matter? Because when an ACC team plays a team out of conference, it's one game for one ACC team - but when a game is played in-conference, it's one game for two ACC teams. That's why you have more games at the beginning of the season and fewer in the middle and end.

Clash over lease threatens proposed $16M expansion of Syracuse’s Tech Garden (PS; $; Baker)

A clash between Syracuse lawmakers and the area’s top economic development organization is jeopardizing a proposed $16 million expansion of the Tech Garden, a small business incubator.

Common Councilor Michael Greene is asking the Tech Garden’s operator, CenterState CEO, to split any profits the Tech Garden makes, in exchange for a 30-year, rent-free lease on its building. The city owns the building and leases space to CenterState for $1.

But CenterState President Rob Simpson said any profit-sharing clause in a new lease is a deal-breaker. He wants to keep the same terms as the current lease on the proposed new lease. He said his organization would be improving a city-owned asset and taking on all the risk. Plus, he doesn’t expect the Tech Garden to actually make any profits.

“We cannot support modifications to the lease that would require The Tech Garden to share ‘profits’ from the facility with the city,” Simpson wrote in a letter to Greene on Friday.
