Welcome to National Meatball Day!

On March 9th, we recognize one of the great American food holidays, National Meatball Day.

It is not clear how this day got started, but who can resist the idea of celebrating National Meatball Day? There are many different ways to celebrate meatballs:

  • Spaghetti and meatballs
  • Swedish Meatballs
  • Meatball Sub
  • Meatball Pizza
  • Turkey Meatballs
  • Lamb Meatballs
  • Porcupine Meatballs (made with rice)
  • and the list goes on and on.
There is a restaurant in New York that has 54 different kinds of meatballs. Not only do meatballs allow for variety, but they move from appetizer to side dish to the main dish quite easily. Meatballs can be made the night before and put in the crockpot, or days before and kept in the freezer.

SU football season tickets go on sale; no price change from 2019 (PS; $; Mink)

Syracuse University has opened the Carrier Dome to a limited number of fans for lacrosse games this spring, and preparations are underway for the 2021 football season next fall.

Season tickets are now on sale as the university reviews several seating plans for football, including the possibility of having a full-capacity stadium.

Pricing starts at $125 for the general public and $100 for recent SU grads. That price point remains unchanged from the 2019 season even with the addition of a seventh home game in 2021.

“We are so thankful to the loyal fans, donors, and alumni who have continued to support our student-athletes during the past year,” Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack said in a statement with Monday’s ticket announcement.

“With these prices we want to demonstrate our appreciation and encourage fans to join us in the Loud House this fall.”

The pick: Rob Hanna, DB; Hanna replaced All-American Andre Cisco after his season-ending injury last season and as a freshman, started the final nine games of his first campaign. Considering spring practice was wiped away due to the pandemic and fall camp was interrupted at times, Hanna performed admirably for a player who hadn't yet received college reps. He piled up 55 tackles, including a season-high 12 in his second career game vs. Duke, and by the second half of the season, was one of the lone, dependable options at the back end for the Orange.

The media was allowed to view about 45 minutes of Clemson’s practice on Monday as the Tigers continue their workouts this spring.

Monday’s practice was Clemson’s eighth of the spring and the second the media was allowed to view. Here is what stood out:

ONLY TWO QUARTERBACKS

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Taisun Phommachanh is still in protocol and missed Monday’s practice. Freshman QBs Bubba Chandler and Will Taylor are not on campus yet. That left starter D.J. Uiagalelei and redshirt freshman Hunter Helms as the only quarterbacks at Monday’s practice. Punter Will Spiers also took some snaps, but it’s definitely strange seeing only two QBs at practice.

Monday Morning Reset: Swinney, Tigers Start to Put Things Together This Week (SI; Senkiw)

To this point, Clemson's spring practice has been more or less a build-up to this week.

Head coach Dabo Swinney said after last Friday's practice that the team had primarily been working on fundamentals, installation and very competitive drills. Much of their scrimmage-like work thus far has been extremely controlled, including last Saturday's practice.

"We're off to a great start," Swinney said.

Things will get ramped up more this week, however. The Tigers are scheduled to have their first of three big, turn-them-loose scrimmages Wednesday at Memorial Stadium. That's when the coaching staff will get a feel for who's retained what's been thrown at the players and what needs to be the focus in the second half of spring practice.

Clemson's been without several Tigers who are either injured or in COVID-19 protocol, but Swinney said that's opened up opportunities for others who might not have seen much action this spring.

Where Texas Talent Signed in 2021

The state of Texas is loaded with high school football talent. For the class of 2021, California produced 30 blue-chip players (4 or 5 stars, according to 247Sports). Georgia cranked out 29. Meanwhile, Texas had a total of 50 blue-chippers! Only Florida produced more (56).
So why did the Longhorns end up firing yet another head coach? To answer that question, you have to examine where those high schoolers signed up to play their college football...

The Southwest Florida and Lee County Fair is on this week with a full schedule of circus acts, petting zoos, hypnotists, clowns and chainsaw artists.

Further north, the Manatee County Fair has already come and gone. The website had a disclaimer that says Covid is a risk you take if you buy a fair ticket or ride armband.

Organizers had budgeted for a 50% drop in attendance over 2020. But in the end, only 25% fewer people came through the gates, said Marla Calico, president and CEO of the International Association of Fairs and Expositions. She was there for opening day.

“There is a significant pent-up demand,” Calico said. “The people that are attending are extraordinarily grateful.”

What does all this activity mean for the New York State Fair?

So far, NY state has not cleared the way for the fair to be held in 2021. Nor has approval been given for the Erie County Fair, which is even bigger than the state fair, or the many small rural county fairs that start with July 4 weekend.

Still, NY State Fair Director Troy Waffner said he is proceeding as if the fair is on until someone tells him it’s not.

“I’m an optimistic person, so there’s never a question,” Waffner said. “We’re just going to have it until I’m told otherwise.”
