Welcome to National Twilight Zone Day!

Today we celebrate the anthology television series The Twilight Zone. It is unclear why the show is celebrated on May 11, as there is no apparent connection between the date and the show. During its 5-season run, the series was both popular with fans and became critically acclaimed.

The Twilight Zone premiered on October 2, 1959, on CBS. It was created by Rod Serling, who not only came up with its concept and wrote or co-wrote 92 of its 156 episodes but also hosted and narrated it. It was one of the first science fiction series, and also had elements of suspense, horror, psychological fiction, drama, and fantasy. Serling combined his love of pulp fiction novels with topics that weren't often addressed on television at the time: social issues such as war (including nuclear), McCarthyism, and racism. In the opening of each episode, characters were transported to another dimension—the fifth dimension—which was called "the Twilight Zone." There they dealt with many unusual events, and the show often had a surprise ending with a moral lesson.

TV Guide ranked the series as #5 on their 2013 list of 60 greatest shows, and as #4 on their 2013 list of greatest dramas. In 2016, Rolling Stone put it at #7 on their list of greatest television shows of all time. Following its initial run from 1959 to 1964, there have been various iterations of it. The first revival of the series took place from 1985 through 1989, when 110 episodes were produced. A second reboot took place from 2002 through 2003, when 44 episodes were made. A third take on the series started in 2019. A radio series was produced from 2002 through 2012, where episodes from the original series were adapted. Twilight Zone: The Movie—starring Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks and directed by John Landis—was released in 1983. A television film, Twilight Zone: Rod Serling's Lost Classics, was released in 1994.

How do former Syracuse stars Cisco, Melifonwu fit in NFL? - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

With the NFL Draft in the rearview mirror, we caught up with NFL Scout Chris Landry from LandryFootball.com to get his take on Syracuse’s three defensive backs making their way to the NFL.

Landry started as an assistant coach at LSU in the 1980s, and has moved on to various roles as coach, scout and administrator at the college football and NFL levels. He’s operated LandryFootball.com since 2014, and gave his thoughts on Andre Cisco, Trill Williams and Ifantu Melifonwu this week’s edition of The Juice on the Cuse podcast, presented by SNY.tv.

On Cisco landing with the Jacksonville Jaguars with the 65th pick of the NFL Draft:

There’s certainly a need there. He’s certainly a guy that can help them. He’s a guy with range, a guy with toughness. He’s got good instictions. It’s a team that’s not very good that has a lot of open spots so he has a chance to compete there.
On Melifonwu going to the Detroit Lions with the 101st pick of the NFL Draft:
He can contribute in their sub packages. That’s a team that’s rebuilding with a new staff and new coach. The playmaking ability, the measurables, they like with what they want to do defensively. It’s a good fit. Like Andre, neither one of those teams is good, so he’ll compete. But how early? It depends on how they develop and how they pick up things.

TheWolfpacker - NC State football 2021 schedule countdown: No. 10, Syracuse (r!vals; Williams)

...

Did You Know?

•NC State has more wins over Syracuse than any other ACC school during head coach Dave Doeren's tenure in Raleigh. The Wolfpack is 6-2 against the Orange under Doeren, which includes two more wins than State has had over North Carolina (4) and Wake Forest (4) during that stretch.
•NC State is 12-2 all-time against Syracuse. The Wolfpack won all six past meetings against the Orange in non-conference meetings and is 6-2 against them since the program joined the ACC in 2013.

2021 Preview

2020 was by far Syracuse's worst season under Babers. Prior to the 2020 season, Babers was 23-26 in four years at Syracuse, including a 10-3 campaign in 2018 that resulted in a second-place finish in the ACC Atlantic Division.

Excluding 2020, Babers has had at least four wins every season he has been at Syracuse. The Orange won't be a contender in the ACC Atlantic this fall, but 4-5 wins sounds right after a forgettable fall last year.

Syracuse will return most of its producers from last season. The Orange ranks No. 26 nationally and No. 4 in the ACC in terms of overall returning production according to ESPN's Bill Connelly's SP+ metric. Cuse ranks 26th in returning offensive production and 45th in returning defensive production.

The biggest returning piece is DeVito, who was the Orange's starting quarterback entering the season before an injury in game four sidelined him for the rest of the campaign. In four starts, Devito completed 50 percent of his passes for 593 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. He also netted 23 rushing yards on 43 attempts.

Freshman running back Sean Tucker also returns as the Orange's leading rusher in 2020. He gained 626 yards on 137 attempts (4.8 yards per carry), including four touchdowns. Tucker also reeled in eight receptions for 113 yards.

Junior wide receiver Taj Harris is also back after leading Syracuse with 733 receiving yards in 2020, 350 more than any other pass catcher on the team. He averaged 73.3 receiving yards per game with a team-high 58 receptions, including five for a touchdown.

Leading tackler sophomore linebacker Mikel Jones will headline the 2021 Orange's defense. In 11 appearances in 2020, Jones produced 69 tackles, 2.0 for loss, five quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, one pass break up and one sack. He also led the team with four interceptions, which also tied for the most in the ACC.

Why No. 10 In The Countdown?

Syracuse should be better this fall than it was in 2020 but short of any surprises, NC State should be a double-digit favorite when the Orange visits Raleigh this November.

Cuse will be the lowest-ranked ACC quad on NC State's schedule rankings, which seems fitting considering the Pack's track record of success against the program under Doeren.

Athlon Sports picked Syracuse to finish last in the ACC Atlantic Division in its preseason standings.
The Orange should see improvement on both sides of the ball this fall, but they have a long way to go, particularly on offense considering the unit was among the worst in the FBS in 2020.

The Clemson football program has been known for winning excellence over the years and the Tigers have gone on to win three National Championships and 26 total conference championships.

Clemson football won its first conference title in the year 1900, when the Tigers won the title in just their second season of opportunity in the SIAA, according to Tim Bourrett.

Now, after more than a century has passed by, that record has finally been broken.

The Clemson softball team won the ACC crown in its first season of opportunity this weekend after they exploded for a 19-2 victory over the Syracuse Orange on Sunday. With the win, the Tigers locked up the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament and captured the regular-season crown.

Congrats to @clemsonsoftball for winning ACC in first season of opportunity. Previous bests were football in 2nd year (1900), boxing in fourth year (1938), and mens outdoor track 5th year (1909). Of course this is a regular season title, not conf champs. Must win trn for that.
— Tim Bourret (@TimBourret) May 9, 2021

So basically John Rittman and @clemsonsoftball today broke a school record that had been set by John Heisman and the Clemson football team in 1900.

Remington reopens Upstate New York gun factory (PS; $; Moriarty)

The Remington Arms factory in the Herkimer County village of Ilion has reopened, eight months after its previous owner closed the plant and laid off more than 700 workers.

Richmond Italia, managing partner for RemArms owner Roundhill Group LLC, said in an email that the company has called back 230 workers to the factory, with plans for starting production with the Model 870 shotgun line, according to the Times Telegram.

Phil Smith, director of communications and governmental affairs for the United Mine Workers of America, said 120 hourly workers are among those who have been called back to work.

The reopening comes a little more than a month after the union announced it had reached an agreement with Roundhill that recognizes the union as the hourly employees’ collective bargaining agent when they return to work, establishes a recall process for more former Remington workers to be called back, and sets up a 60-day timeframe for the parties to begin negotiating a full labor contract.
