Welcome to World Redhead Day!

Redheads are celebrated around the world today. Red is the rarest hair color, with only 2 percent of the world's population having it. Most redheads are of northern or western European ancestry; the highest percentage of redheads come from Scotland, followed by Ireland.

Besides celebrating red hair, the day raises awareness about the stigma associated with red hair, and the discrimination that redheads sometimes face. Redheads are often stereotyped as having a fiery temper. There even is Kick a Ginger Day, which has led to some children being bullied. In ancient Greece, some redheads were considered to be vampires. Many redheads were killed in Europe between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries because they were perceived to be associated with witchcraft.

247Sports: What’s the Best Case Scenario for SU this Fall? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Eads)

We’re under 100 days from the college football season! Spring has come and gone so all that’s left to do is get the rest of the freshman class on campus and get ready for August. In the meantime our previews and predictions continue. Today, we’ll examine what the experts think about how high SU could fly this fall. Here’s what 247sports.com writer Austin Nivison had to say:

Syracuse Orange | 7-5 — The Orange are coming off a truly miserable 2020 season in which they went 1-10 with the only victory coming against Georgia Tech. That makes it hard to imagine a turnaround like this for Syracuse, but this is the best-case scenario. If Syracuse can go 3-1 in their non-conference slate, the Orange would only need to go .500 in conference play to reach seven wins.”

I don’t think previous seasons and records have any sort of merit in any discussion about predicting the future. Just think about UCF from 2015 when the Golden Knights went 0-12, then proceeded to finish 13-0 in 2017. How about Michigan going 5-7 in 2014, then 10-3 in 2015. There are plenty of examples that discredit this “theory” that just because a team went 1-10 last year, they can’t win in the next season.

On the other hand, the turnaround from 1-10 to 7-5 would be impressive. SU’s schedule is brutal this year and it’s not loaded with non-conference cupcakes. Click here for more in-depth analysis on the slate, but here’s a quick reminder:

Position Breakdown: Wide Receivers — 2021 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a unit-by-unit preview each week over the summer. This week, we’re discussing three major storylines around the wide receivers and tight ends.

There’s Taj Harris and Anthony Queeley…

Even in a (very) down year for the Syracuse offense, wide receiver Taj Harris still managed to shine.

The Orange finished at the bottom of the NCAA in points (128th) and passing yards (110th), but little of that had to do with Harris.

He led all Syracuse receivers in yards (733) and scores (5), and was named Third Team All-ACC. He returns for his senior season and will once again be counted on as being the team’s No. 1 receiver, but perhaps should be used more in the slot.

They’ll need more of Harris given that they lost several receivers to the transfer portal, including Nykeim Johnson (Kent State) and Aaron Hackett (TCU). Another receiver, Ed Hendrix, recently put his name into the portal as well.

That leaves Anthony Queeley as the only other wide receiver with any significant experience. Queeley started all 11 games for SU last year, and finished with 37 catches for 378 yards and two touchdowns.

… And then there’s everyone else.

Behind Queeley and Harris, there are several talented, but unproven underclassmen.

Among that group includes Courtney Jackson, Damien Alford, Ja’Vontae Williams, Isaiah Jones and Trebor Pena. Of the group, Jackson, a redshirt sophomore, has the most experience, amassing 10 receptions for 69 yards. Pena also displayed his speed with a 98-yard kickoff return against NC State, and was named ACC Specialist of the Week for Nov. 30.

Syracuse CB Duce Chestnut Named Top 100 True Freshman – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Amendolara)

Syracuse suffered through a gristly season, winners of only one measly game. Nothing went right, especially health. The only bright side to all the losing and injuries is hopefully the long term growth of the roster. The starters that lost time opened the door for so many young players to get their moment.

Into this void steps Duce Chestnut, a true freshman corner from Camden, New Jersey. He was a top-35 corner in his recruiting class and chose Syracuse over offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Louisville and Baylor. He was a huge win for Dino Babers’ staff, a 4-star player who also played offense, ram track, and was a dynamic kick returner as well in high school.

247 Sports named the Top 100 true freshman to make an impact nationally this year, and Chestnut was Syracuse’s lone name on the list.

“The Orange are going to be young in the secondary next year… That gives Chestnut, Syracuse’s highest-rated 2021 signee, a chance to vault into the rotation right away. Chestnut is a versatile cornerback who can play as many as four positions in the secondary thanks to his size and tackling ability, which allows him to play corner, nickel and even some safety.” – 247 Sports

On The Block On Demand 5-25 (ESPN; Radio; Axe)

Brent is jealous of Paulie’s big win on the Phil Mickelson bet so he makes a pick of his own, this time on the Syracuse football team. Later, a follow up to yesterday’s Quincy Guerrier conversation including comments from assistant coach Allen Griffin made on Orange Nation.

Post-Draft Q&A: Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Magician on why Andre Cisco could be a play-maker for the Jaguars (bigcatcountry.com; O'Bleness)

We continue to examine each of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 2021 draft picks with our post-draft Q&A series. Next up is Andre Cisco, the Syracuse safety coming off of a season-ending ACL injury, who Jacksonville selected in the third round (No. 65 overall).

To learn more about what Cisco brings with him to the NFL, we reached out to John Cassillo, managing editor at Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Magician — SB Nation’s great website for all things Syracuse Orange.

So what exactly are the Jaguars getting in the play-making safety? Let’s find out.

1. Cisco was known as a “ballhawk” at Syracuse with 13 interceptions in just 24 games. What makes him so good at taking the ball away, and would you say he takes too many gambles and sometimes gets burned, or does he strike a good balance when it comes to taking chances?

John:
With Cisco, it’s a combination of things. He’s quick, has a pretty big wingspan (over 77 inches) and just has a great ability to read both routes and the ball while it’s in the air. There are some inherent gambles in his style of play, but given Syracuse’s defensive struggles up front in recent years, he pretty much had to take those risks. I do think some of his later games at SU became very big-play focused, but overall, he’s a guy who managed to improve over the course of his time and learns from mistakes.

2. Cisco tore his ACL in September, but was still drafted in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft just seven months later. Obviously it’s hard to predict at this point, but do you expect that injury to affect his availability or quality of play as a rookie, and how concerned do you believe Jaguars should be about the injury?

John:
I wouldn’t be any more concerned about his specific ACL injury than any other. What will be most interesting early on when he’s back in action is how quickly he can return to the closing speed that made him so dangerous in college.

ACC Football Win Totals 2021: Clemson, UNC project as favorites - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

With the 2021 college football season only a few months out, oddsmakers have released projected wins totals for every FBS program. With that in mind, let’s focus in on where each ACC team lands.

Unsurprisingly, Clemson enters with the highest wins projection: 11.5. Only one other ACC team projects to win 10 or more games — North Carolina. Miami is close, though: 9.5.

This would (likely) create the Clemson-North Carolina ACC title game scenario that many expect to take place later this year in Charlotte.

Half of the teams in the league (7) project to win between 6-7 games. That’s the ACC football that we all know and love.

Number of P5 Bowl Teams, 2017-19

How many P5 teams make bowls each year?

How many from each P5 conference?

Here are the numbers for 2017-19 (I'm not including 2020 because it was so weird):
Bowls201920182017Avg%
ACC10111069%
Big Ten99862%
Big XII67870%
Pac-1277964%
SEC911969%

What we learn from this:

The number of P5 teams who go bowling each year is pretty consistent at 41-45 teams.

  • The number of teams per P5 league is also fairly consistent, year-to-year.
  • Approximately two thirds of all P5 teams play in a bowl each year.
  • The percentage of bowl-eligible teams ranges from a low of 62% (B1G) to 70% (XII).

Summer Dining Weeks deals return to downtown Syracuse in June (PS; $; Cazentre)

A summer version of Syracuse’s Downtown Dining Weeks promotion returns for the second year next month as a way to help restaurants ease out of the Covid 19 pandemic.

A record 52 downtown restaurants or food vendors will participate in the event, which runs June 1 to June 13. Some will offer lunch deals of three courses for $15 or less and some will offer dinner special of three courses for $35 or less (and many will do both). Taxes and tips are extra.

In addition, five dessert shops will offer separate “sweet deals” during the two weeks.

This is the 17th incarnation of Dining Weeks, coordinated by the Downtown Committee of Syracuse. It started as a way to promote downtown dining in the ordinarily slow mid-winter month of February. It is sposnored by Visions Federal Credit Union with support from Prime Steakhouse in Hanover Square.

A special mid-pandemic version was held in February, with many Covid protocols and guidelines still in place.

Under new guidelines that started last week, restaurants have the discretion to allow vaccinated customers to enter without masks, and without the need for social distancing. Restaurants are supposed to require masks for unvaccinated customers, although that is enforced now largely through an “honor system.” And restaurant may choose to require all customers to wear masks regardless of vaccination status.

These are the participating restaurants (* means first-time participant):
