Welcome to World Crocodile Day!

World Croc Day is "a global awareness campaign to highlight the plight of endangered crocodiles and alligators around the world." Crocodiles and alligators are celebrated and there is hope the day will encourage people to get involved in helping them. World Croc Day was organized by the Crocodile Research Coalition in conjunction with the Belize Zoo. During past celebrations, events have been held at the zoo and the day has been marked around the world.

While the holiday takes on the name of crocodiles, it is for alligators as well. This makes sense, as the animals are similar in a number of ways. They both are large reptiles from the order Crocodilia that have short legs, powerful tails, long snouts, and bony-plated backs. But they have differences, too, and there are ways to tell them apart. One of the most notable differences is their snouts: alligators have broad and rounded U-shaped ones, while those of crocodiles are narrow and pointed like a V. When alligators have their mouths shut, their bottom teeth can't be seen. But when crocodiles close their mouths, some of their bottom teeth are visible. There tends to be a color difference between the two reptiles. Alligators are gray or black, while crocodiles tend to look more olive, gray-green, or tan. Crocodiles usually live near saltwater, while alligators make their homes near freshwater. Lastly, crocodiles are more aggressive than alligators—and more likely to attack humans. Alligators usually don't attack humans unless they feel threatened.

Keystone State Offensive Lineman Recaps Syracuse Visit (SI; McAllister)

Ahead of a big official visit weekend, Syracuse football had a talented offensive lineman on campus for an unofficial visit on Wednesday. Nick Del Grande out of Lampeter-Strasburg High School in Pennsylvania made the short trip to Central New York to check out the Orange campus.

"Had a great day with coach Schmidt and his staff," Del Grande said. "(Got to see) basically everything. Facility tour, campus tour, position meeting with the coaches, and lots more."

Del Grande, listed at 6-4, 260 pounds, also worked out for Syracuse offensive line coach Mike Schmidt.

"For about 45 minutes," Del Grande said. "Went great. They loved my athleticism and speed/change of direction. Also my strength in my initial pop. They coached me up on lots of technique things like hand placement."

Del Grande thinks he was so impressive during his workout that an offer could come in the next few weeks. If an offer did come, it would be his first power five scholarship opportunity.

Ohio's Dom Foster setting up Syracuse visit as DB board shifts (247sports.com; $; Bailey)

Update:
Foster said he will take an unofficial visit on June 22

Syracuse football's defensive back board for the Class of 2022 is shifting this week. With high-three-star prospect Jahlil Florence nixing his official visit for this weekend and four-star Jacolby Spells considering doing the same for the final weekend in June, the Orange coaching staff is pivoting some of its efforts to Dom Foster.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound rising senior at Warren G Harding High School in Ohio is rated three stars by 247Sports. He's an athlete that's being recruited by SU as a cornerback. Foster recently received an offer from Boston College after attending a camp, and also holds scholarship opportunities from Kent State, Toledo, Miami (OH), Akron, Youngstown State, Eastern Kentucky and Eastern Michigan.

Syracuse contacted Foster on Monday, he said, and he's quickly forming a bond with safeties/nickelbacks coach Nick Monroe. Foster has already spoken with defensive coordinator Tony White and cornerbacks coach Chip West. And he's planning to taking an unofficial visit on June 22.

Position Breakdown: Defensive Line — 2021 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a unit-by-unit preview each week over the summer. This week, we’re breaking down Syracuse’s defensive line.

Projected Starters

Defensive End: Josh Black. Black is back for his sixth season, and has started every game over the past two seasons. Last year, he finished with 28 tackles, and 4.0 for a loss.

Defensive Tackle: McKinley Williams. Williams is another sixth-year starter returning for the Orange that has made 26 starts in the 50 games he’s appeared in Orange. He started all 11 games last year and finished with 35 tackles and a sack.

Defensive End: Kingsley Jonathan. It’s hard to imagine that a fifth-year senior would be the least experienced of the group, but that’s exactly what Jonathan is. The Campbell Trophy Semifinalist finished with 32 tackles and 3.0 sacks, and enters 2021 as an All-ACC Second Team Preseason Selection by ESPN’s David Hale. He was limited in spring due to an injury, but if he’s healthy in the fall he’ll be the starter.

Projected Two-Deep Reserves

Defensive End: Caleb Okechukwu. While Syracuse didn’t release a depth chart this spring, you’d think that Okechukwu, a redshirt sophomore, would be on it. After missing all of 2019 with an illness, he appeared in all 11 games in 2020, making 14 tackles and adding a sack.

Defensive Tackle: Curtis Harper. Harper appeared in 11 games last season, predominantly at nose tackle. He’s appeared in 23 games and is a redshirt senior with two years of eligibility left.

Defensive End: Cody Roscoe. Roscoe transferred to Syracuse from McNeese State in 2020, and was a part of the defensive line rotation. He finished with 20 tackles and also had a forced fumble and fumble recovery.

Tim Green’s new book is about a football player diagnosed with ALS (PS; $; Mink)

Tim Green’s new book is a deeply personal novel centered around a football-playing father diagnosed with ALS.

The book, due for a September release, is titled “Final Season.”

It’s a fictionalized account that draws obvious allusions to Green’s life as he continues therapies to treat the fatal disease. In the book, there’s a young boy grappling with his future in the sport while watching the toll ALS takes on his father, a former defensive lineman for the Atlanta Falcons.

Green went public with his ALS diagnosis on CBS’ “60 Minutes” in November 2018, suggesting his long career in football and repeated head injuries factored into his condition.

One reason for optimism for every ACC team in 2021 (247sports.com; Gates)

For the last six seasons in the ACC, the Clemson Tigers have been the massive hurdle for the rest of the league to try and get over, but they have not been able to. Dabo Swinney and his program have dominated the league, winning the last six ACC titles and seven of the last 10 since he began coaching the program full-time. It doesn’t look like Clemson is slowing down anytime soon yet either.

A couple of ACC teams have emerged as possible competition for Clemson in the league this year because of the returning talent on their rosters as well. But are the experts expecting those teams to actually push Clemson? Recent win total projections have a few teams possibly push for the top of the league this year but in order to make that happen, some things in particular are going to have to go exactly right. Luckily, there are a few reasons to be excited for different teams around the league.

Entering the 2021 season, even if it might not feel like it for some, there is a reason to be optimistic about the season ahead. Each is different and each team is held to a different expectation for optimism.

Could 12-team playoff force ACC to do away with divisions? (theclemsoninsider.com; Vandervort)

for gbo

When Notre Dame joined the ACC last year for a one-time-situation due to the pandemic, the league decided to do away with divisions and have the two teams with the best conference records play for the championship.

The Irish went 9-0 in their one season in the ACC, while Clemson went 8-1 in league play. After playing a double overtime thriller in South Bend in the regular season, the two met again in the championship game. It was a battle between No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 3 Clemson.

It turned out to be great exposure for the ACC, as ESPN’s College GameDay made its way to Charlotte, as the country’s game of the week on championship weekend.

Clemson won the game 34-10 to win its sixth straight ACC Championship. The Tigers and Notre Dame both got into the College Football Playoff, just the second conference in the playoff era to have two playoff teams in the same year.

Given last year’s track record, would it not be good for the ACC to continue with no divisions and allow the top two teams to play for the title. It will not happen this year. The ACC has already said the conference will go back to division play, but with the CFP expanding to a 12-team field in the future, it might be in the ACC’s best interest to do away with divisions.

Links, News and Rumors - 2021 June 17th (RX; HM)

All Sports Discussion says "ACC football might finally make long-delayed scheduling reforms."

Matt Zemek makes some excellent points, such as:

It always struck me as weird and bizarre that the ACC ditched its divisional format last season in the pandemic but then chose to return to a divisional format this year.
Matt even gives an interesting prescription:
The ACC could make a rule that if a conference title game is going to be a regular-season rematch, the opponent has to be in the top 20… and if it isn’t, the league could pick a third-place team if that team is a top-20 team... Conferences need to be smart about adapting to the realities of the 12-team plan.

It's a one-page article; definitely worth a read!

— College Football Playoff (@CFBPlayoff) June 10, 2021
What, exactly, was included in the 12-team Playoff proposal?
The Playoff Schedule:

First-round games would take place on campus sometime during the two-week period after conference championship games;
Quarterfinals would be played on January 1—or January 2 when New Year's Day falls on a Sunday—and on an adjacent day;
Semifinals and championship game dates are to be determined; semifinals likely will not be played as a doubleheader.
The Playoff Bracket
The playoff bracket would follow the rankings, with no modifications made to avoid rematches of teams that may have played during the regular-season or are from the same conference;

The bracket would remain in effect throughout the playoff (i.e., no re-seeding);

Why Joining the ACC Makes Sense for UCF, and Still Will Not Happen (SI; Smith)

The big boys of college football reside in the Power Five conferences. At least that’s traditionally the case. Now that UCF football is knocking at the door, would one of the most prominent leagues in America consider letting the Knights into its conference?

The UCF football program joining the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is much more complicated than one might consider. Yes, it’s located in the same state as ACC members Miami and Florida State, is located in the same geographical area as the majority of the ACC members, and it’s a really good school with an engineering program on par with Georgia Tech.

The Knights even draw much of the student body from the same areas -- Florida and Georgia -- that many ACC members utilize to fill their student bodies. Regardless, it’s not likely for the Knights to join the ACC. There is one prime reason for the Knights being left out of the ACC.

Recruiting. To start, take a look at the following eight ACC schools. There are many Florida recruits that signed with those eight schools for the class of 2021.

Clemson (3)
Florida State (7)
Georgia Tech (2)
Louisville (4)
Miami (18)
North Carolina (1)
North Carolina State (2)
Pittsburgh (4)

From those eight programs, each of them signed at least one Florida prospect from this past recruiting class. The state of Florida produced 37 NFL draft picks this past April, the highest of any state in America. It’s a gold mine of talent, and ACC teams know it.

NY puts $1M toward job training, recruitment for I-81 project (PS; $; Weaver)

New York’s Department of Labor is putting $1 million toward job training and recruitment for local workers on the Interstate 81 project, a $2 billion proposal that’s expected to create jobs ranging from construction to catering, two state commissioners said this week.

Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon said the idea is to help people who live nearest the highway, which tore apart Syracuse’s historically Black neighborhoods decades ago, benefit from the massive work it’ll take to tear down that section of I-81.

The state wants, Reardon said, “to heal the scars that have been there since I-81 was created.”

How exactly this $1 million, which comes through the federal government, will help with that isn’t immediately clear yet. Initial plans for the effort, called “Workforce Forward: Syracuse,” are underway, Reardon said. Her office later said the money will go toward job training, transportation for those trainees and childcare, but offered no further budget breakdown.
