The Lion King Reaction GIF

Welcome to International Panic Day!

The word panic is derived from the ancient Greek word Pan. Pan was the Greek god of shepherds, woods, and pastures, and when he would awake from a nap he would let out a yell that caused flocks to stampede. Greek authors coined the word "panikon" from this, which meant "sudden fear". Panic is "a sudden sensation of fear, which is so strong as to dominate or prevent reason or logical thinking, replacing it with an animalistic fight-or-flight reaction." Panic can happen in an individual or it can happen in large groups. It is not healthy for people to be in a constant panic, as stress levels are raised which can be detrimental to health. This day is dedicated to this sensation of panicking.

Arizona State’s Cheating Scandal Involves Syracuse Recruit Eric Gentry – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Amendolara)

The writing on the wall is ugly for Herm Edwards. For a coach that has preached doing things the right way for his entire life, it sure rings hollow this morning. There is reportedly stacks of evidence that Arizona State blatantly broke NCAA recruiting guidelines over the last year, and they ultimately landed a Syracuse recruit, Eric Gentry.

The reports show a program led by loud-mouthed Super Bowl winning linebacker Antonio Pierce, which had no regard for Covid regulations. Over the last year official visits were not permitted on campus. Everything had to be done virtually. But at ASU, recruits and their families were invited to campus, met with coaches at night, and walked through the facilities. In some cases, players were even worked out and the film dissected in coaches meetings.

Apparently there’s enough former coaches that got bullied or dismissed from the program over Herm’s four years that are out for revenge. The reports suggest it was an insider that presented all the evidence to the NCAA. Edwards’ pillars have always been old school values. No shortcuts. Respect the game. Take responsibility. This blatant disregard for rules during a nationwide health crisis sure sounds hypocritical when posed against that.

Gentry is a 3-star LB out of Philadelphia. The 6’6″, 205 lb. standout was offered by Syracuse in December 2019. He already had offers from Tennessee, Oregon and Virginia. ASU jumped in with an offer a month after SU, and then landed his commitment last summer in July. This was at the time that official visits were off the table for every program, and just a few months into the pandemic. Remember what life was like last summer. People weren’t traveling, seeing their families, and stuck at home in many places. ASU was hosting recruits, and if it was Gentry, he would’ve flown across the country to do so.

There’s no details yet on which recruits were the ones who took those illegal visits, but it sure seems interesting that Gentry committed in the summer and ultimately signed in December. He also had offers from much better programs than ASU, including Texas A&M, Cincinnati and Indiana.

Transfer Portal Options to Replace Willie Tyler – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; May)

In a random turn of events, Texas offensive line transfer Willie Tyler announced his decommitment from Syracuse last week. Tyler, who is listed at 6-foot-7, 330 pounds, has plenty of time left in his eligibility and was most likely going to earn his way into the starting lineup if not this year, then next. Instead of waiting it out, Tyler bounced and left a hole for the Syracuse coaches to fill.

The Orange did bring in five offensive line recruits in the incoming freshman class and JUCO transfer Jakob Bradford, but SU could still be in the market for an O-line transfer. So, let’s play the hypothetical game and throw some names out there that could be transfer portal targets to replace Tyler for Syracuse.

BRANDON CUNNINGHAM – MISSISSIPPI STATE
Cunningham is an athletic, versatile player that can do many things. The lineman just finished his redshirt freshman season at Mississippi State, meaning he still has four years of eligibility left due to COVID.

He’s listed at 6-foot-4, 300 pounds and played in nine games last season. Cunningham saw time as both a tackle and guard, proving that he could fill multiple roles for Syracuse if needed. He also took a couple snaps on the defensive line in 2020, proving his athletic ability.

Cunningham was a four-star recruit out of high school and mostly saw offers from southern schools like Miami, Florida, Florida State, Arkansas, and others.

TRENT PULLEN – OKLAHOMA STATE
Pullen is a youthful player that could be a cornerstone of the offensive line for years to come. He just finished his freshman year at Oklahoma State, where he didn’t play in any games. Pullen still has a full four years of eligibility left.

SYRACUSE — NEW LIFE AT QUARTERBACK

Oct 1, 2016; East Rutherford, NJ, USA; A Syracuse Orange helmet sits on the turf prior to the game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at MetLife Stadium.

Syracuse acquired Mississippi State transfer quarterback Garrett Shrader out of the transfer portal to add some more depth to the team. As a true freshman at Mississippi State in 2019, Shrader started four games and appeared in 10, completing 57.5 percent of his passes for 1,170 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 587 yards (5.2 yards per carry) and six scores, displaying a level of mobility that could mask the Orange’s offensive line woes in recent years. He’ll provide quarterback competition to Tommy DeVito, who suffered a season-ending injury early last year, thus creating some issues at quarterback.

Virginia Tech recruiting: Hokies pick up commitment from 2022 offensive tackle (gobblercountry; Manning)

The Virginia Tech Hokies added another offensive linemen to the class of 2022 on Thursday when three-star offensive tackle Jakson LaHue announced his commitment.

The 6-foot-5, 285-pound LaHue plays at Azle High School in Azle, Texas. LaHue had offers from multiple Ivy League schools, meaning this is an impressive young man. Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and Columbia were among LaHue’s offers. Virginia Tech was currently his only Power 5 offer, but there was heavy interest with Texas Tech.

LaHue is a prospect offensive line coach Vance Vice really liked. Vice has done well with under-the-radar recruits, and perhaps LaHue is his latest find. Most fans are going to see the offer list and roll their eyes. In most cases, that’s understandable. However, Vice deserves the benefit of the doubt in some of his evaluations.

— Jakson LaHue (@JaksonLahue) June 17, 2021
LaHue is the type of prospect who doesn’t have to contribute immediately once he steps on campus in 2022. He has good size and a great frame. He took his official visit to Blacksburg last weekend.

Inside the pitch to bring Southwest Airlines to Syracuse: $1M in incentives, research, lobbying (PS; $; Moriarty)

Southwest Airlines will receive up to $1.5 million in waived fees and $150,000 in marketing assistance to come to Syracuse, the only major Upstate New York city not served by the discount carrier.

Jason Terreri, director of Syracuse Hancock International Airport, said the airport will waive from $1 million to $1.5 million in landing, terminal and other operational fees for the first two years of Southwest’s operations at the airport. The exact amount depends on how many flights the airline operates from Syracuse, he said.

In addition, the airport will provide up to $150,000 in marketing assistance during the first year to help it advertise its new service, according to Terreri.

Dallas-based Southwest announced last week it will begin service from Hancock on Nov. 14, initially with three daily flights each way between Syracuse and Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Fares will start at $49 each way.

In addition, the airline will launch nonstop service on select Saturdays during peak fall and winter holiday periods between Syracuse and Orlando, Florida, starting Nov. 20.

Syracuse will be the 121st airport served by Southwest and the 18th new one since early 2020.
