Welcome to World Giraffe Day!

The world's tallest animal is celebrated today, on this longest day or night (depending on the hemisphere) of the year. World Giraffe Day also raises support, creates awareness, and sheds light on the challenges that wild giraffes face. Giraffes encounter a number of threats: habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, habitat degradation, poaching, disease, human population growth, and ramifications from war and civil unrest. They are forced to compete with humans and livestock for resources. As of 2021, there were about 117,000 giraffes in the wild in Africa. People can help save them by participating in the day. World Giraffe Day events are hosted by zoos, schools, governments, non-governmental organizations, institutions, conservation organizations, and companies.

According to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF), the architects of World Giraffe Day, there are four species of giraffes: Northern giraffe, Southern giraffe, Reticulated giraffe, and Masai giraffe. The GCF recognizes five subspecies: the Angolan giraffe and South African giraffe, which are Southern giraffes, and the Nubian giraffe, Kordofan giraffe, and West African giraffe, which are Northern giraffes. The giraffes live in different geographic areas of Africa. Along with the okapi, giraffes make up the Giraffidae family. At the time of writing, the GCF classification differs from that of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which lists one giraffe species and nine subspecies.

Syracuse 'Moves Up' for Quan Peterson After Official Visit (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse hosted several priority targets for official visits over the weekend. Among them was Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe cornerback Quan Peterson. Peterson, who is an all-state basketball and football player, enjoyed his time on the Syracuse campus.

"It was nice," Peterson said. "Everybody was nice. We went to the facilities, the stadium, then we went to the arcade and did bowling and laser tag. A lot of stuff. It was fun."

Peterson enjoyed spending time with the Orange players, including his host Aman Greenwood.

"Smurph (Greenwood)," Peterson said. "They were all real, we were all just talking. I asked if I came if I'd have a chance to start or play early. They went over the roster with me and kept it real."

The 6-1 corner also spoke with the Syracuse coaches. It was primarily head coach Dino Babers who spent time with Peterson.

"It was mainly with Dino," Peterson said. "He was with me the whole time and coach White. It really wasn't even football the whole time, they were asking me about my personal life. Trying to get to know me as a person."

Syracuse Makes Big Impression on DJ Jackson (SI; McAllister)

Sumter (S.C.) High defensive lineman DJ Jackson was one of nine official visitors on the Syracuse campus over the weekend. AllSyracuse.com caught up with Jackson after the trip to discuss how it went, visit impact and a decision timeframe.

Q: What stood out about the visit?

Jackson: "The buildings are great. They're very old, but inside it's very new. Those were beautiful. The people are amazing. The team is great. The head coach is great. Defensive coordinator is great. Defensive line coach is great. It was an amazing experience. It was my first time on a plane getting up there. I got on four planes for the first time in my life in three days. Me and my mom had a great time. I didn't really feel like a recruit (Jackson clarified he meant he felt like a current player rather than a recruit) when I was there. It was beautiful. And the Dome. The Dome is crazy. It's air conditioned too. It was amazing. And their food."

Seven From ACC on Walter Camp Preseason All-America Team (theacc.com)

The Walter Camp Football Foundation, an all-volunteer organization and caretaker of the nation’s oldest college football All-America team, announced its 2021 Preseason All-American teams, which includes seven players from the ACC.

First-team selections were Clemson defensive lineman Bryan Breese and wide receiver Justyn Ross, North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell, and Miami punter Lou Hedley.

Earning second-team distinction are Clemson offensive lineman Jordan McFadden, Clemson defensive lineman Myles Murphy and Pitt defensive lineman Calijah Kancey.

Walter Camp, considered the “Father of American Football,” first named an All-American team in 1889. The 2021 season will be the 132nd edition of the team.

In late November, the 2021 All-America teams will be selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the 130 Football Bowl Subdivision schools and will be certified by Marcum’s New Haven-based accounting firm.

Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation – a New Haven-based all3 volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team. The Foundation is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA). The NCFAA was founded in 1997 as a coalition of the major collegiate football awards to protect, preserve and enhance the integrity, influence and prestige of the game’s predominant awards. The NCFAA encourages professionalism and the highest standards for the administration of its member awards and the selection of their candidates and recipients.

Miami football 2021 season not defined by Alabama game (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

Alabama defeated Ohio State 52-24 in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in January. Even with 19 starters back opening the season against the Crimson Tide is a difficult task for the Miami football team. The outcome for the Hurricanes against the Crimson Tide will not define their 2021 season.

Alabama against the Miami football team was determined to be the 10th most defining game of the 2021 season by 247 Sports earlier this week. The battle at Mercedes Benz Stadium between the two high-profile college football programs could have an impact on the 2021 College Football Playoff.

Alabama has routinely steamrolled opponents in their season openers under Nick Saban. The Crimson Tide has defeated ranked opponents by an average of 23 points in six season openers during the Saban era. Only three finished the season ranked. Under Saban, Alabama has won by 25 PPG against Power Five opponents.

After the game against Alabama, Miami will return to Hard Rock Stadium for four straight home games. Miami will host Group of Five power Appalachian State, Michigan State, FCS Central Connecticut State and Virginia to begin ACC play. The Hurricanes have to be ready for Appalachian State.

ACC Football has been owned by Clemson and Dabo Swinney the last several years, and on Late Kick Live Ep 148 Josh Pate took a scan over the conference and circled the biggest swing games for several teams. Clemson vs UGA appears to be a no-brainer swing game as the Tigers could be a 17+ point favorite in every other game they play. What about North Carolina? Could a date with Miami around mid-season determine the fate of the Tar Heels AND Hurricanes?

ACC, SEC, spearheading new plan for NIL rules (theclemsoninsider.com; Vandervort)

The NCAA moves into a crucial 10-day period in regards to name, image and likeness, and it appears the biggest conferences in collegiate athletics are divided on the matter.

Jim Phillips of the ACC, Greg Sankey of the SEC and Larry Scott of the Pac-12 are urging their colleagues to consider a new and minimalist approach to regulating NIL. This is coming from a letter obtained by ESPN.

According to ESPN, the letter says previous proposals to change NCAA rules will lead to “inevitable confusion, uncertainty and likely litigation against the NCAA and its member conferences and institutions.”

The NCAA Division I Council is expected to meet Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss NIL rules. The council, which decides on rule changes for the NCAA, is expected to make a decision by the end of this month on a proposed rule which will allow student-athletes the opportunity to make money from their name, image and likeness.

A working group has spent the last two years developing a proposed set of changes that could allow student-athletes the opportunity for endorsement deals, while setting other rules to make sure there is a “clear distinction” between being a professional athlete and a student-athlete.

Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby, along several respected administrators from the Big Ten were a part of the working group. ESPN reports, the ACC, SEC and Pac-12 asked the NCAA to consider a new plan.

From FBSchedules: Auburn, Miami schedule home-and-home football series for 2029, 2030
The Auburn Tigers and the Miami Hurricanes have scheduled a home-and-home football series for the 2029 and 2030 seasons... In the first game of the series, Auburn will travel to take on Miami at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2029. The series will conclude the following season when the Tigers host the Hurricanes at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2030.
Hey, at least it's a better matchup than Miami vs. Alabama!

Thursday we told you what Matt Zemek had to say about football divisions. Apparently, he's far from alone... From AP: CFP Expansion Will Push Conferences To Reconsider Divisions

The proposed 12-team College Football Playoff would make winning a conference more important than ever, with six spots reserved for league champions...
Last year, the Atlantic Coast Conference, benefitting from Notre Dame's pandemic-induced league participation, placed both the Fighting Irish and Clemson in the playoff. Notre Dame became the first team to lose a conference title game and reach the playoff.
If and when the playoff grows to 12, ideally conferences will want to create title game matchups that bolster their chances to get more than one team in the field... The ACC did that last year by scrapping its divisions...
Some teams, like Northwestern, like having divisions because, well, they find themselves in the weaker half of their conference.

Ranking the best 2021 QBs (CBS) (RX; HM)

Ranking the best 2021 QBs (CBS)

From CBS Sports: Ranking the 2021 college football quarterbacks in tiers: From Heisman contenders to up-and-comers

You know the deal: these are ACC-related highlights; if you want the whole enchilada, you'll have to click the link above. That said, I hope you enjoy this...

some methodology explained first.

  • Not every quarterback is ranked.
  • Established or projected starters get ranked.
  • Experience matters more than potential -- one-year experience minimum.
  • Efficiency is the primary focus (rather than raw numbers)

The data is courtesy of TruMedia.
The legend for the tables below are:
- TD/INT: Touchdowns to interceptions rate.
- TD%: Percentage of touchdowns thrown per attempt
- INT%: Percentage of interceptions thrown per attempt
- 1st/ATT: Percentage of first downs thrown per attempt
- AY/ATT: Air yards per attempt
- Rating: Passer rating

Tier I

All-America and award season aspirations, including the Heisman Trophy
PLAYER (SCHOOL)TD/INTTD%INT%1ST/ATTAY/ATTRATING
1. Sam Howell (North Carolina)4.298.6%2.0%42.2%10.34179.1
Howell... is coming off the best back-to-back seasons of any quarterback in major college football.

Tier II

Potential all-conference selections and a few fringe Heisman contenders
PLAYER (SCHOOL)TD/INTTD%INT%1ST/ATTAY/ATTRATING
1. D'Eriq King (Miami)4.607.0%1.5%33.8%9.41152.8
King, if fully recovered from his ACL injury, is as entertaining as any quarterback in the country. Uiagalelei will be the attraction and Howell will probably get some first-team preseason ACC love, but King is right there with them. He's slippery when the ball is in his hand and is a scoring machine.

Tier III

Established starters across the entire FBS
PLAYER (SCHOOL)TD/INTTD%INT%1ST/ATTAY/ATTRATING
5. Phil Jurkovec (Boston College)3.405.1%1.5%33.6%10.13138.7

9. Jack Coan (Notre Dame)3.605.30%1.50%38.6%7.11151.8
Coan's numbers were from 2019 while he was at Wisconsin. He sustained a season-ending foot injury last fall and transferred to Notre Dame in the offseason. I liked what he did with the Badgers, but after a year away with a new team can he pick up where he left off?

Tier IV

Players to keep an eye on who are primed for breakout seasons

More severe storms headed for Syracuse area (PS; $; Craig)

Just a week after issuing a rare tornado warning in Onondaga County, the National Weather Service says severe storms may be headed for the Syracuse area again.

A few scattered storms today could produce gusty winds, but on Monday afternoon, National Weather Service meteorologists expect “a more organized areawide threat for scattered severe thunderstorms” and said they couldn’t rule out the possibility of isolated tornadoes.

Those storms will come with very hot and humid conditions. They might produce strong winds and large hail, and heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding, according to the National Weather Service office in Binghamton.

The storms will likely move west to east and could be scattered batches of storms or a single line of strong storms, the National Weather Service said.

lost power 2 days in a row.. guessing number 3 is coming this afternoon
