Welcome to World UFO Day!

World UFO Day is dedicated to the existence of unidentified flying objects. First celebrated in 2001, it was created by the World UFO Day Organization. The day is often celebrated on June 24 and July 2, although The World UFO Day Organization declared July 2 to be the official day. June 24 marks the anniversary of one of the first UFO sightings in the United States, when Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine high-speed crescent-shaped objects near Mt. Rainier in Washington, in 1947. July 2 marks the anniversary of the Roswell UFO incident, which also happened in 1947.

Dom Foster Discusses Syracuse Offer, Visit (SI; McAllister)

Class of 2022 Warren (Ohio) Harding defensive back Dom Foster took an unofficial visit to Syracuse on Wednesday. Heading into the visit, Foster held offers from Boston College, Kent State, Toledo and several others. He added Syracuse to that list during the trip.

"I went on an unofficial visit," Foster said. "After I had a great discussion with the head coach and he offered me. He really liked what he saw on film and he felt like I really fit their program."

He was excited to get the offer.

"It really happened," Foster said of his reaction. "Crazy man. Really blessed."

The visit was multi-faceted. Foster was able to see all aspects of Syracuse football, including coaching philosophies from the staff.

"I went to team meetings met with all the defense coaches," Foster said "Saw all the classes there. The best part was seeing the coaching from the defensive coaches. Man it’s good to see them because if I was considering going there, I already got a feel for them and what they expect in their defense. Went through a whole film session with them like I was apart of the team."

Position Breakdown: Defensive Backs — 2021 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Sears)

As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a unit-by-unit preview each week over the summer. This week, we’re breaking down Syracuse’s defensive backs.

NFL Departures Open Door For Young Talent

With three players being taken in April’s NFL Draft, the SU defensive back room has a lot of players gaining significant playing time opportunities.

Andre Cisco, the first pick of the third round by the Jacksonville Jaguars, leaves an opening at the “rover” safety position in defensive coordinator Tony White’s defense. Ifeatu Melifonwu, also a third round choice by the Detroit Lions, opens a spot at cornerback; rounding out the list, Trill Williams recently signed as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints, leaving another hole in the cornerback spot.

With two of those three players exiting last season due to injury, the depth chart has some starting experience that should be well prepared for a larger role. Let’s take a look at a few of those players.

Players To Watch

Garrett Williams– Unquestionably CB1 for the 2021 season, Williams was an All-ACC Honorable Mention and a Freshman All-American per The Athletic in 2020. Williams was a playmaker last year with 12 passes defensed and a pick-six on Trevor Lawrence, often raising his game to match elite competition.

Dino Babers Is Trusting In a Bible Verse to Make Syracuse Football Relevant Again - Sportscasting | Pure Sports (sportscating.com; Elman)

Dino Babers is consulting the Good Book ahead of the 2021 college football season.
The Syracuse Orange are a long way removed from Donovan McNabb’s heyday and went 1-10 amid the coronavirus pandemic last season. With spring camp in the rearview, Babers hopes a Bible verse proves prophetic for his football team.

Dino Babers is using the Bible to stay optimistic

Babers wants to believe that good things, especially victories, will come in threes once again.
In an interview with The Athletic, the veteran head coach explained that when he recently read through the Bible, he stumbled upon Acts 28:12. A portion of that verse reads, “And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.”

Babers said the verse provided him with a sense of optimism about the season ahead.

“My whole thing is I think about our third year, we went 4-8, 4-8, then we went 10-3. As I read the Bible again, I’m going, ‘Woo, this is getting kind of weird.’ Now we’ve gone 5-7 and 1-10 since then. But three is a strong number in the Bible, the trinity, and everything else. Maybe it will repeat itself in a third year again.”

ACC Commish on CFP Board Mtg (RX; HM)

ACC Commish on CFP Board Mtg

From the official ACC release of June 22, 2021...

Statement from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips on Tuesday's CFP Board of Managers Meeting:

"The ACC appreciates the work by the sub-group of the CFP management committee as we continue the evaluation of future postseason formats. Today’s presentation to the full Board of Managers was an important step in the process, and we now move into the listening and feedback stage. As a league, we look forward to the continued conversations surrounding what’s best for postseason college football, and most importantly, the student-athletes that participate. It’s undeniable how successful the CFP has been since its formation, and it’s important we ensure any future evolutions will only enhance the college football regular season and postseason.”
Now, hopefully the new commish has seen first-hand how the CFP Selection Committee can be influenced and, realizing that the ACC is not the most influential conference, will push for a more impartial selection process (perhaps involving a computer poll).

More on the Supreme Court Ruling

From the official ACC release of June 21, 2021...

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips on Monday's Supreme Court Ruling:

“The ACC will continue to evaluate the Supreme Court decision that was delivered this morning. The ruling by the Justices provides clarity surrounding educationally based benefits and we look forward to engaging our conference membership in our efforts to best serve and support our student-athletes. The Court also made it clear that the preferred pathway for resolving these issues is in the legislative process, as opposed to the courts, and we look forward to continuing our dialog with members of Congress to support our nearly 10,000 student-athletes.”
Yep.

Future Games at Bank of America in Charlotte (RX; HM)

Future Games at Bank of America in Charlotte

The site of the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta has been hosting a football kickoff game for many years. In fact, more often than not there's more than one game scheduled as part of the Chick-fil-A kickoff weekend [see Future Games at Mercedes-Benz in Atlanta from 2019].

The ACC, being little brother to the SEC in football, and having its football championship game located in Charlotte, also has been developing a kickoff game - albeit many years behind the Chick-fil-A in Atlanta. In fact, so far they're continuing to struggle to fill the event with decent teams, as this table would seem to indicate:

YearCFB games in Bank of America Stadium – Charlotte, NC

source: College Football Neutral Site Games

First of all, only three of these games are P5-vs-P5 affairs. Second, there are more SEC teams (3) than ACC teams (2) scheduled to open a season in Charlotte.

This is something which, quite frankly, should be a concern for incoming ACC commissioner Jim Phillips. The SEC has already made significant in-roads into Charlotte (for example, the SEC Network is headquartered there). Conceeding this kickoff event to the SEC is not a good long-term strategy, to say the least.

Heat, humidity make a comeback in Upstate New York (PS; $; Coin)

Summer will start to feel like summer again this week in Upstate New York.

The cold front that brought high temperatures in the mid 60s Tuesday and mid 70s today is waning, to be replaced by temperatures in the high 80s by late this week. That cool 49 degrees that drifted through our windows early this morning? Gone, replaced by uncomfortable nighttime lows in the 70s.

The warm, humid weather will be brought to us courtesy of a weather feature called the Bermuda high. That’s a long-lasting area of high pressure in the north Atlantic Ocean that shifts east and west, depending on atmospheric pressure.

“Overall the long term is looking hot and humid as the Bermuda high continues to strengthen,” said the National Weather Service office in Binghamton.
