Welcome to National Meteor Day!

Heads raise upwards and eyes scan the sky, keeping watch for meteors, for it is National Meteor Day, also commonly known as National Meteor Watch Day. Meteors, sometimes called shooting or falling stars, glow brightly as they fall through the Earth's atmosphere. They start out as meteoroids, a small piece of space dust made of rock or metal, which may be as small as a particle or as large as a rock, and which has broken off from an asteroid or planet. Meteoroids come up against air particles, which creates friction. They then heat up and burn to the point of vaporization. The glow they produce is the hot air that remains as they burn.

Meteors may appear to be a momentary bright white light, but they actually change colors as they burn, the colors indicating the gases the rocks are made up of. Silicate burns red, sodium is orange and yellow, copper is blue or green, potassium is purple, and iron is yellow. If a meteor makes it through the Earth's atmosphere intact or without completely burning up, and reaches the ground, it is known as a meteorite. Meteorites make craters many times their size.

Pasqualoni ‘humbled’ by Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame honor: Not sure I deserve it (PS; $; Mink)

There couldn’t be a more fitting setting for Paul Pasqualoni accepting the honor of being inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame.

He wasn’t seated among the group outside the museum for Monday’s announcement at Driver’s Village in Cicero.

He was tucked away in an office at the University of Florida, a football lifer churning along at age 71 as a special assistant to head coach Dan Mullen.

But Pasqualoni took a break from his duties to film a short video that culled together a few of his thoughts on his time roaming the Carrier Dome sideline and being part of the 2021 induction class.

“To have the oppportunity to be recognized in the sports community in Syracuse is humbling,” Pasqualoni said in the video. “Not sure I deserve it, but pretty special.”

Pasqualoni’s credentials look all the more deserving the further removed we are from his 14-year tenure as the head football coach at Syracuse University.

He succeeded Hall of Fame coach Dick MacPherson in 1991 and started a decade of success with back-to-back 10-win seasons, finishing just outside the Top 5 in the final Associated Press poll in 1992.

Syracuse Football: 2021 Orange Season Preview and Prediction (athlonsports.com; Staff)

Syracuse heads into Year Six of the Dino Babers era in a precarious position. The 10–3 campaign that Babers and the administration hoped would spark a jump from the Orange's status in the cellar of the ACC is more than two years old.

SU followed a 5–7 campaign in 2019 by posting its second one-win season since 1948. The pandemic cut into a pivotal offseason of installation after Babers hired two new coordinators last winter. Then a string of preseason offensive line injuries forced Syracuse to start its fullback at left guard.

This fall marks a chance for Syracuse to take a step forward, but improved line play will be needed for the team to get back into postseason play and for Babers to solidify his long-ter

Previewing Syracuse's Offense for 2021

Recognizing the need for talented depth at the quarterback position, Babers went out and landed a transfer. Garrett Shrader is a dual-threat signal-caller out of Mississippi State who was promised the opportunity to compete with two-year incumbent Tommy DeVito.

A former four-star prospect, Shrader faces an uphill battle to take the mantle from DeVito this offseason. But his mobility and knack for playmaking could well come in handy once the games begin. DeVito has faced a constant stream of pressure in the last two years, and barring a massive turnaround up front and quicker decision-making by DeVito, that will continue in some fashion.

The hope, internally, is that Syracuse can mend some of its issues in the trenches, allowing DeVito to stay in the pocket and utilize the arm talent that led him to his own four-star ranking and Elite 11 finals appearance as a recruit.

Last year's transfer addition, ex-Florida guard Chris Bleich, is eligible and healthy to compete, and the staff landed a junior college prospect in Jakob Bradford to boost the unit. SU also returns all of its primary contributors from a year ago, including a rising standout in sophomore tackle Matthew Bergeron.

Biggest Storylines for Louisville Football’s 2021 Opponents: Part IV (cardchronicle.com; Shea)

Greetings and welcome to the fourth and final edition of the “Biggest Storylines for Louisville Football’s 2021 Opponents.” If you missed the first three you can find them here: Part 1, here Part 2, and here Part 3. We’ll wrap up this series talking about the final quarter of Louisville football’s 2021 schedule which includes Syracuse, Duke, and Kentucky.

Let’s hit it.

Syracuse Orange

I will be the first to admit that I am a huge Dino Babers fan. I think the guy is a genuinely caring coach who has some extremely clever offensive schemes. But I’m afraid that Babers is likely out of time at Syracuse.

When Syracuse won 10 games in 2018, few that had followed the program closely were stunned. Even though the Orange had only won eight games in his first two years, the flashes of offensive firepower were there and felt like a ticking time bomb before Syracuse put it all together and went off. The biggest flash happened in 2017 when Syracuse stunned #2 Clemson at home 27-24. The Orange then went on to lose the final five games of the season to finish 4-8.

But then it finally happened in 2018 when Syracuse’s offense which was led by Eric Dungey led the Orange to their first double digit winning season since 2001. Again, those who had followed Syracuse weren’t completely shocked, but the 10-win record also felt a bit hollow as Syracuse finished 40th overall in the SP+ ratings with the offense ranking 44th and the defense ranking 60th. The ACC also had a very down year in 2018 as well, which certainly didn’t hurt Syracuse.

This is why the subsequent collapse was also not shocking.

Following 2018, Syracuse has only won six games, with last season’s 1-10 record raising major red flags in Upstate New York.

That’s obviously not what you want to see in year five of your head coach and it’s the exact reason why Babers has the hottest seat in the ACC this year. Furthemore, Syracuse, who finished ranked 95th overall in SP+ (99th offense, 73rd defense), brings back almost everyone on offense and defense. Most of the time that’s a good thing, but this may be a time you want a clean slate and a youth movement.

Ranking The Top 5 Returning ACC Quarterbacks For 2021 – OutKick (outkick.com; Lamb)

We’ve been breaking down the top returning offensive players of college football by position and conference over the last couple of weeks, and now it’s time to turn our attention to the five quarterbacks in the ACC who pushed an otherwise talented trio down to honorable mention status.

The ACC lost the quarterback who ended up being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Though Trevor Lawrence has moved on, the conference still has arguably (and I do mean arguably) the best collection of QB talent in all of college football.

Even Florida State, a program that has struggled at the position over the last few seasons, now has a promising quarterback battle brewing between UCF transfer McKenzie Milton and last year’s starter Jordan Travis.

RELATED: Top Returning CFB Players On Offense By Position, Conference

Without further ado, it’s time for the selections:

Honorable mention: Kenny Pickett, Pitt; Brennan Armstrong, Virginia; Jeff Sims, Georgia Tech

Kenny Pickett, Brennan Armstrong and Jeff Sims are all talented enough to make the top 5 returning quarterbacks list for the ACC, but they only managed to make honorable mention. The talent and depth the conference brings to the table is just that good.

5. Malik Cunningham, Louisville

Malik Cunningham is one of the conference’s top 5 quarterbacks, even if he did struggle with turnovers in 2020. As a three-year starter, he’s seen his fair share of ups and downs, but he’s a fantastic runner and an improving passer who should continue to get better.

Miami football could take light 2022 class to leave transfer spots open (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

The Miami football program has used the transfer portal as well as any team in the country. Miami signed four transfers in the Class of 2022. Miami could take a class of around 18 signees in 2022 to keep the transfer portal open again. Two late additions to the Miami football program are expected to count towards the 2022 class.

Running back Cody Brown and offensive lineman Justice Oluwaseun transferred to Miami during the offseason and are expected to have their scholarships count towards their 2022 Class. Brown transferred to Miami after being released from his National Letter of Intent he signed with Tennessee in December.

Olusawseun comes to Miami after spending the last four seasons with UNLV. Miami OL coach Garin Justice was in the same position with the Rebels in 2018 and 2019 before being hired by Miami. Miami also added defensive end DeAndre Johnson, wide receiver Charleston Rambo and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson as transfers.

Miami currently has quarterback Jacurri Brown, cornerback Khamauri Rogers and wide receiver Landon Ibieta committed for 2022. With the extra year granted by the NCAA across all sports in 2020, Miami will likely not know who is returning for the 2022 season until 2021 is complete. That puts the roster in transition.

Clemson football: Comical to say “Tigers avoid UNC & Miami” (rubbingtherock.com; Benedict)

for gbo

We have seen a lot of odd Clemson football schedule narratives over the years, but the 2021 version might be the funniest one yet.

In case you have lived under a rock (pun intended), like us, you are tired of hearing about the “easy” schedule that Clemson football allegedly enjoys on a yearly basis. It’s as if athletic director Dan Radakovich and head coach Dabo Swinney sit down each year and look over who they think would be easiest.

The Tigers have nothing to do with how other ACC programs fair. It’s not Clemson’s fault that Florida State is trash, that NC State hires unqualified men to coach, or that Boston College hasn’t been good since Matt Ryan left.

While Clemson football is happy to beat down South Carolina every year, it isn’t our fault that they bring the Tigers’ schedule strength down a thousand notches.

Clemson football isn’t lucky to avoid anyone

The fact remains, Clemson football has beaten damn near every team in front of them over the last decade – Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Ohio State, UGA, Miami, FSU, Oklahoma have all lost to Clemson at least once.

National writers from various publications have all noted that “Clemson avoids Miami and UNC in 2021”. Let’s get something straight here, UNC and Miami are lucky to avoid Clemson in 2021 as it gives both a better chance at getting to Charlotte and the 2021 ACC title game.

There is nothing “scary” or opposing about a Mack Brown or Manny Diaz-coached football team.

Nothing.

Both are overrated. Both have coaching staffs that cannot touch the level of coaching and development that Clemson football has. In addition, neither has the talent nor depth that Clemson has.

Remember in 2017 and 2019 when Miami was back? Final scores between Clemson and Miami in those two games combined: 80-20. “The U” doesn’t have the talent, facilities, culture, development, or coaching that Clemson has.

They are lucky to avoid Clemson football and another embarrassment that would surely come with a meeting between the two.
