Welcome to Orangemen's Day!

Also known as the Twelfth or the Glorious Twelfth, Orangemen's Day commemorates and celebrates the Battle of the Boyne, fought in 1690, and the Glorious Revolution of 1688, which took place when James II, a Roman Catholic, was deposed, and William of Orange, a Protestant, received his throne. Orangemen's Day primarily is celebrated by people with Protestant Irish or Scottish backgrounds. In some locations, it is observed on the Monday closest to July 12th.

The Battle of the Boyne was fought on July 1, 1690, outside of Drogheda, along the River Boyne, in what now is the Republic of Ireland. Prince William of Orange and James II of England and Ireland, who was also known as King James VII of Scotland, each raised an army of about 30,000 troops, and Prince William came out victorious in the battle. The battle remains a symbol of the sectarian struggles in Ireland between Protestants and Roman Catholics. Not long after it, the defeated Catholics formed underground societies in an attempt to restore the line of James. The Protestants countered by forming the Orange Order.

Jordan Anthony is a very fast young man

Syracuse football WR target Jordan Anthony releases Top 7, commitment date (247sports.com; Bailey)

Class of 2022 wide receiver Jordan Anthony is narrowing down his list in preparation for a commitment announcement on July 27, he announced on Saturday. A rising senior at Tylertown High School in Mississippi, Anthony is considering Syracuse football as well as Boston College, Houston, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Missouri and South Alabama.

The 5-foot-11, 160-pound Anthony is rated three stars by 247Sports. He received an offer from Orange wide receivers coach Terrence Samuel on June 9 before taking an official visit to Central New York during the final weekend of the month. Anthony has also toured Louisville, Kentucky, Memphis and Houston.

This spring, Anthony has been thriving on the track. He won the outdoor national championships in the 100 meters with a 10.21, beating the all-time Mississippi high school record, per MileSplit.com. He placed second in the 200 meters, clocking in another state record at 20.86.

Orange fireworks cause for July celebration - The Juice Online (the juice; Auger)

At the end of June, Nick Monroe promised on Twitter that Syracuse fans would soon see Orange fireworks. Over the next several days leading up to, and on, the Fourth of July, the staff delivered on Monroe’s claim.

For months, Syracuse football recruiting, at least to the public eye of a fanbase starving for positive signs of life, has been stuck in neutral with only four commits. The most recent of which, Belizaire Bassette, committed on March 27.

More alarming was the success of peer schools Boston College and Rutgers.

Jeff Hafley and Greg Schiano are both entering their second seasons, and each has been collecting quality recruits – if the recruiting website rankings are to be believed – hand over fist.

BC is obviously an ACC foe and Rutgers is on the schedule this year. It is an out of conference game that would behoove Dino Babers and the Orange to hang in the win column.

June is typically a month that sees Syracuse land multiple verbal commitments. And with the NCAA allowing campus visits starting in June as the national pandemic wanes and vaccination distribution rises, schools everywhere were primed to capitalize.

Q'yaeir Price is a Big Recruiting Win for Syracuse (SI; McAllister)

Class of 2022 Wayne (N.J.) DePaul Catholic defensive lineman Q'yaeir Price committed to Syracuse on Saturday. This is a significant pickup for the Orange both in terms of the talent he brings to Syracuse and what it means on the recruiting trail.

Price had offers from the ACC, Big-10 and Big-12. That includes several programs that Syracuse often battles in recruiting. Boston College, Indiana, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and West Virginia.

Rutgers wants to keep the best players in New Jersey home as they look to rebuild the program. Price is certainly that and is in the discussion for the best defensive lineman in the state. Beating Rutgers for an in-state prospect is certainly an important recruiting victory.

The Orange had momentum in this recruitment after Price's official visit. West Virginia, however, got the last visit. The Mountaineers did everything they could, making a big push to try to land the DePaul Catholic standout. Despite those efforts, he still picked Syracuse. West Virginia recruits many of the same areas that Syracuse does. Winning a battle for a prospect that both schools prioritized is also significant.

So Far, ACC Predictions Haven’t Been Kind To Syracuse Football – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Bainbridge)

For better or worse, it’s been a long time since Syracuse football has been on SU fans’ weekly viewing menu. SU bowed out of the 2020 football season with a December 5th 45-21 drubbing at the hands of Notre Dame. Since then, Syracuse fans (and those of us here at the Fizz) have spent the offseason pondering how things could start looking up for Dino Babers and company. In any event, the Orange are back on the gridiron in a little over a calendar month.

However, some other online writers haven’t been quite so interested in concepts like hope or positivity. Here are some of the predictions for Syracuse from around the country.

Before we get started, you can view the Fizz’s official predictions here.

CBS SPORTS: 3-9

Chip Patterson of CBS Sports authored his prediction for Syracuse to go 3-9 and offered his prediction in the context of betting. In June, William Hill set its lines for over/under W-L totals for ACC teams, and Syracuse’s was 3.

“Simulation Syracuse” Begins Monday Night – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Eads)

The offseason talk has not been very “pro-Syracuse” heading into 2021. The Orange face an interesting non-conference slate and have to endure the typical ACC foes. Most pundits predict SU to flounder just like last year. Most crystal balls have ‘Cuse finishing with a losing record and at the bottom of the conference.

“Simulation Syracuse” is a series beginning Monday night (7/12). This project is the simulation of SU’s 2021 season on the new College Football Revamped video game. The Orange open the season on the road against Ohio. The livestreams are open to all and will be hosted on Youtube (link can be found below). All are welcome to come and watch, chat, and enjoy!

Fizz writer John Eads will host the livestreams on his Youtube page. The plan is to host one stream per week on Friday nights. For the non-conference slate, we’ll be hosting two streams per week starting tomorrow night. The stream begins at 7:35 p.m. tomorrow night. Hit the link below!

This July 8, 2021, Rolling Stone cover shows singer-songwriter Clairo, who launched her career while a student at Syracuse University.

SU alum Clairo finds peace on new album recorded in Upstate NY, lands Rolling Stone cover (PS; $; Herbert)

Syracuse University alumna Claire Cottrill, better known as singer-songwriter Clairo, is opening up about her struggles to find peace in a new Rolling Stone interview.

Cottrill told the magazine that the Covid-19 pandemic taught her to slow her life down after her bedroom-pop song “Pretty Girl” went viral on YouTube when she was a 19-year-old freshman at SU. The song hit 1 million views when she was at a party at SU, and now it’s got 75 million hits.

She dropped out of school a year later, went on tour with Dua Lipa, and became a Gen Z hero with songs about depression and bisexuality — but it wasn’t easy.
