Syracuse football announces representatives for ACC media days, will be only school not sending a QB (PS; $; Carlson)

Syracuse football announced that it will send defensive lineman Josh Black, wide receiver Taj Harris and offensive lineman Airon Servais to represent the program at this year’s ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte.

The event will be held over two days on July 21 and 22. Portions of the event will be televised on ACC Network.

Black and Servais are veteran leaders who chose to return to Syracuse for extra seasons this year. Both will be playing their sixth year of football for the Orange in 2021, an option provided to them because of the coronavirus pandemic’s impact on last year’s season.

Can similar cast of Syracuse football offensive linemen pave way for bounce-back year? (2021 preview) (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football's offensive line play has been the team's biggest hinderance in each of the last two seasons. A combination of injuries and poor performance has left the Orange's quarterback room ravaged, its defensive players gassed during second halves and its projections for the 2021 season squarely at the bottom of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The front five will, once again, garner the spotlight during preseason camp despite a quarterback battle and reloading secondary. A cast very similar to the one that has taken lumps each of the last two years will gear up again, though with more experience and potentially healthier. And if SU is to rebound significantly from its 1-10 finish last fall, this group will need to perform better.

Let's take stock of that group to kick off our positional previews for the 2021 season.

Who returns?

The Orange returns almost 100 percent of its significant snaps from a year ago with only reserve Patrick Davis expected to depart as he begins a Canadian Football League career. Starting tackles Matthew Bergeron and Airon Servais are back as the latter elected to make use of the extra year of eligibility provided by the NCAA due to the coronavirus pandemic. Center Carlos Vettorello as well as guards Dakota Davis and Darius Tisdale also remain in the fold, giving first-year assistant Mike Schmidt a veteran core to mold.

Returning backups include up-and-coming tackles Anthony Red and Mark Petry, though the coaching change provides a fresh chance for evaluation to others to a room that also includes Josh Ilaoa, Garth Barclay and Wil Froumy.

Analysis: Looking at what Syracuse gets in DL commit Q'yaeir Price (247sports.com; $; Dohn)

Profile:
Q'yaeir Price
Position:
Defensive lineman
School: Wayne (N.J.) DePaul
Height: 6-2
Weight: 255

Recruiting: Price announced his commitment to Syracuse on Saturday. He made official visits to Syracuse and West Virginia.

Scouting report: Price has a stout build and a could bulk up and play defensive tackle or remain in the 260-pound range and play an end position. He has slight plus length and shows some twitch at the snap. He was productive with 41 tackles and 5 ½ sacks in six games as a junior. He has 16 sacks and 114 tackles in 17 career games.

I saw Price play against Morristown (N.J.) Delbarton in the fall, and I also saw him at the Under Armour camp outside of Baltimore in early May.

DePaul plays a 3-4 defense and Price lines up as a 5-technique. He gets off the ball well and he uses his strength in strength well to push the offensive tackle back. He drives his legs well and wins the leverage battle.

247Sports projects the ACC's order of finish (247sports; Marcello)

Editor's note: Twenty-one reporters across 247Sports' national team and ACC team sites participated in a survey projecting the 2021 football season in the conference. The responses include a predicted order of finish in the ACC's divisions and superlatives for the 2021 season, including the conference champion, the projected player of the year and the game of the year.

Clemson probably doesn't need much luck to win its seventh straight ACC championship, so is it strange when some wonder if the Tigers will fall short of the conference title after replacing Trevor Lawrence at quarterback?

We gathered our team experts in the ACC and national reporters to discuss the upcoming season and project what will happen in the fall. Clemson ran away with the vote to win the ACC as 247Sports' unanimous selection to repeat as champion and grab a spot in the College Football Playoff. That doesn't mean Clemson will enter the postseason undefeated. Our experts see a few potential bumps in the road in the Atlantic Division. Meanwhile, the Coastal Division is expected to be crazy once again as favorites Miami and North Carolina battle it out to reach the ACC Championship Game.

Still, there isn't much confidence that either Miami or North Carolina can knock off the Tigers in the ACC Championship Game.

Meanwhile, NC State and Boston College appear to be picking up steam, especially among our panel of voters at 247Sports. Jeff Hafley is quickly becoming one of the hottest coaches in the conference and with a player like receiver Zay Flowers on the roster, might we see the Eagles exceed expectations again?

The conference is also loaded with great quarterbacks with D.J. Uiagalelei promising to be the next big thing at Clemson and Sam Howell (North Carolina) and D'Eriq King (Miami) already in the Heisman Trophy discussion. The defenses at Clemson and Pitt promise to be elite, with the Tigers' unit poised to potentially be the nation's best.

Might this be the deepest the ACC has been in the playoff era?

Let's take a look at how our panel of 21 reporters project the conference this fall.

Atlantic Division

1. Clemson, 147 (21)
2. NC State, 107
3. Boston College, 95
4. Florida State, 84
5. Louisville, 75
6. Wake Forest, 56
7. Syracuse, 24

Coastal Division

1. North Carolina, 133 (15)
2. Miami, 124 (5)
3. Pitt, 83 (1)
4. Virginia Tech, 77
5. Virginia, 69

2021 Louisville college football preview: Cardinals enter season with endless possibilities (dknation.draftkings.com; Buchinger)

The Louisville Cardinals took a step back in the 2020 season with a 4-7 record, and it is difficult to get a good read on where this program is at the moment. Scott Satterfield immediately injected life into the team his first year in 2019 for a program that needed a full culture rebuild and resulted an eight-win season.

A rough go of it in Year 2 is not the end of the world especially in a pandemic-impacted season, Satterfield’s relationship with the fan base took a bit of a hit. He interviewed for the South Carolina head coaching job without telling the athletic director and admitted he would likely take interviews with North Carolina and NC State if they asked. Sometimes honesty isn’t the way to go, and Louisville finds themselves in a unique spot as a program because of it.

The 2021 Louisville football season is a bit of a wild card as this year could go in many different directions, so there will be plenty of eyeballs on Satterfield in Year 3.

It's been a LONG time...

Last week, FBSchedules posted "The ten most long-awaited reunions in college football in 2021".
Here are the ACC-related match-ups which have been on pause for at least 30+ years...

MICHIGAN STATE at MIAMI FLA. – Saturday, Sept. 18
Last played: Sept. 30, 1989, (2) Miami 26 – Michigan State 20
U.S. President: George H.W. Bush
Same day that: Nolan Ryan earned his 300th strikeout of 1989 – the last of his six 300 strikeout seasons, tying him with Randy Johnson for the most in history.
It’s been more than 30 years since these two met on a football field. For the Hurricanes it was the fourth victory in an 11-1 run that ended with a win over (7) Alabama in the Sugar Bowl sealing the deal on the third of the Canes’ five national championships. Miami leads the all-time series 4-0, the two schools have no plans to play again in the future.
MY COMMENT: I hate the fact that Miami opens the season against Alabama - it overshadows this game, which is a real shame.
__________

PITT at TENNESSEE – Saturday, Sept. 11
Last played: Sept. 3, 1983, Pitt 13 – Tennessee 3
U.S. President: Ronald Reagan
Same day that: Professional racing driver Augusto Farfus Jr. – winner of the 2020 Intercontinental GT Challenge, the 2003 Euro Formula 3000 and the 2001 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 – was born in Brazil.
These two have met twice previously, regular season games in 1980 and 1983, both played in Knoxville and both resulting in wins for Pitt. The 1980 Panthers (11-1, No. 2 in the final AP) were led by head coach Jackie Sherrill and sophomore QB Dan Marino. Tennessee is scheduled to make its first ever visit to Pittsburgh in 2022.
MY COMMENT: Call this the Johnny Majors Bowl, since Coach Majors took Pitt to its last national championship, then immediately left Pittsburgh for more money to coach Tennessee. But the 70% win rate he enjoyed while coaching the Panthers turned into 62% with the Vols, which got him fired (er, "forced to resign"). Majors ultimately returned to Pittsburgh, but he wasn't able to recapture his former success there. I write all that to say that, yes, there is some history here!
__________

NOTRE DAME vs. WISCONSIN (at Chicago, Ill.) – Saturday, Sept. 25
Last played: Sept. 26, 1964, Notre Dame 31 – Wisconsin 6
U.S. President: Lyndon B. Johnson
Same day that: The Milwaukee Braves and Philadelphia Phillies set a record by using a combined 43 players in nine innings.
Notre Dame and Wisconsin have met 16 times previously including consecutively from 1934-36, 1942-44 and 1962-64. The 1964 meeting was the opener for both teams – the Irish went on to win the next eight-straight games and rose to No. 1 in the AP before falling to unranked USC 20-17 in the finale. For the Badgers it was the beginning of a 3-6 campaign, the first of ten-straight losing seasons. The two schools are scheduled to meet again in 2026, this time in Green Bay.
MY COMMENT: What does a Badger have in common with a Fighting Irishman? Not much, tbh...
__________

SYRACUSE at OHIO – Saturday, Sept. 4
Last played: Oct. 1, 1921, Syracuse 38 – Ohio 0
U.S. President: Warren G. Harding
Same day that: Walter Hagen won the first of his five PGA championships (and the third of his 11 major titles) at Inwood CC in Long Island, New York.
These two have met twice previously, both decisive home victories for the Orange. The combined score of the two games – 111-0 – means that Ohio has an opportunity this season, 100-years after the most recent meeting, to score its first ever points against Syracuse. The two have plans to meet again in 2024.
MY COMMENT: This is insane scheduling by the Orange, if you ask me. First, it's on the road at a MAC school. What P5 teams do home-and-homes with MAC schools? So let's say they beat Ohio on the road - what credit do they get? ...but lose, and oh, boy, does Babers' seat get hotter!

The space occupied by The Blue Tusk bar and deli at 165 Walton St. in Syracuse will become home to a new craft beer-centric bar called Taproom on Walton by early next year. Ellen M. Blalock / The Post-Standard Ellen M. Blalock

New craft beer bar to take over soon-to-be-vacated Blue Tusk space in Armory Square (PS; $; Cazentre)

A new craft beer-centric bar will be taking over the space that has been occupied by the Syracuse craft beer pioneer The Blue Tusk for the past 26 years.

The Tusk is closing, probably by late September, amid a landlord-tenant dispute.

The Taphouse on Walton is expected to open in early 2022 at 165 Walton St. in the Center Armory building.

It will be owned and operated by Kyle Mastropietro, who also owns Kasai Ramen restaurant a block away.

But it will not be Kasai Ramen: That restaurant will remain in its location at 218 Walton St.

The new place will feature 70 beers on tap (just like the Tusk), along with a kitchen offering sandwiches, flatbreads, cheese boards and other food, Mastropietro said today. A sourdough bakehouse will take an adjoining space in Center Armory, and likely open ahead of the taproom, perhaps by later this year, he said.

Mastropietro said the interior of the Blue Tusk will be gutted and completely remodeled. It will have more seating for dining in than the Tusk has.

The Taproom on Walton will allow Mastropietro to explore his passion for craft beer, and his interest in promoting local and New York state breweries.
