Ohio coach Frank Solich retires. Syracuse football opens its season visiting the Bobcats (PS; $; Carlson)
When Ohio hosts Syracuse to open the fall football season, the Bobcats will do so without the winningest coach in Mid-American Conference history.
Ohio coach Frank Solich, 76, announced his retirement on Wednesday, saying he needed to focus on a cardiovascular health issue. Solich was fourth among active FBS football coaches in career wins with 173.
Only Nick Saban (Alabama), Mack Brown (North Carolina) and Gary Patterson (Texas Christian) have more wins among active head coaches, putting Solich in an elite group.
His 115 wins in 16 years with Ohio are the most among MAC coaches in the conference’s history. In addition to his time with the Bobcats, Solich was also the head coach of Nebraska for six seasons.

As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a unit-by-unit preview each week over the summer. This week, we’re breaking down Syracuse’s linebackers.
Projected Starters
Weak-side Linebacker: Mikel Jones. Jones emerged as a force as a full-time starter as a sophomore, finishing with Honorable Mention All-ACC Honors. he finished tops in the ACC for interceptions for a linebacker (4) and had eight takeaways, the most by any individual player in the FBS. He also led Syracuse in tackling (69).
Middle Linebacker: Geoff Cantin-Arku. Another stellar sophomore in the linebacking core, Cantin-Arku finished fourth on the team with 63 tackles, and led the Syracuse defense with 4.0 sacks. The Canadian linebacker also forced a pair of fumbles.
Strong-side Linebacker: Stefon Thompson. Thompson rounds out a talented, and youthful starting linebacker group. In his true freshman season, Thompson earned the starting position, finishing with seven starts while appears in 10 games. He finished with 35 tackles, 7.5 TFL and 3.0 sacks and was named to the Freshman All-American Team by the Football Writers Association of America.
Key Reserves
Marlowe Wax: Wax proved to be a key member of the linebacker group in his true freshman season, as he appeared in all 11 games with a start at linebacker. He finished with 33 tackles and three sacks and could potentially earn a starting spot.
Steve Linton: The redshirt freshman and converted defensive end was part of the linebacker rotation, seeing action in eight games, including one as a starter. He finsiehd with 15 tackles.
Leon Lowery: A high school defensive lineman out of New Jersey, Lowery saw the field for three games as a linebacker in 2020.

Syracuse Football: Will Orange flip script, reach bowl game in 2021? (satrudayblitz.com; Pryor)
The Orange’s 10-win season in 2018 seems like a lifetime ago. Since that season, Syracuse has posted 5-7 and 1-10 records, respectively. This year, head coach Dino Babers and the Orange look to rebound from what can only be considered a disastrous season in 2020.
Last season was a confluence of issues as COVID-19, a couple of opt-outs, and preseason injuries derailed Syracuse’s season before it got started. The pandemic limited both first-year coordinators’ ability to install their offense and defense.
This season both Sterlin Gilbert and Tony White have a full offseason to install their systems. So far, there aren’t any significant injuries this offseason, and the offensive line seems to be on track. In addition to the offensive line, coach Babers and the offensive staff have to figure out who will start at quarterback this fall.
There are some pieces in place both offensively and defensively. It is hard to imagine things getting any worse for the Orange after their first one-win season since 1948. Babers could be on the hot seat this season, but a large buyout could protect him for now.
Can the offensive line stay healthy? Will White’s 3-3-5 defense show improvement with a full offseason? Can Syracuse get to a bowl game?
Here is a look at the Orange coming into this season.
Can the offense find the endzone consistently this season?
Last season’s offense was bad; there are no two ways about it. The offense averaged just 17 points per game. They struggled running and throwing, averaging just 4.4 yards per play. It was a carousel of quarterbacks with three quarterbacks throwing at least 45 passes.One of the reasons three quarterbacks saw time was the offensive line. Injuries forced a lot of shuffling along the line, which caused little continuity in the trenches. This was a unit that allowed 3.5 sacks per game and 7.5 tackles for loss.
This season, the offensive line is a veteran group. They get players back from injury, and Florida transfer Chris Bleich is eligible and healthy. JUCO signee Jakob Bradford should bolster a group that has pieces now that some of them are healthy.
If there is any part to the offense that coach Babers and offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert are excited about, it is running back. Veterans Abdul Adams and Jarveon Howard return after opting out last season, and freshman sensation Sean Tucker — who led the Orange in rushing — return, giving Syracuse a good running back room.
Taj Harris anchors a talented but young receiver corps. Keep an eye on an incoming freshman, Kendall Long. He’s 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds and a track guy. Long is freakish physically and could see some snaps if he can put it all together.

Syracuse football’s 2021 season feels like it’s just around the corner, even though it’s still over a month away. This offseason, we’ve seen Dino Babers snag some new commits and a whole lot of negative press from around the prediction-happy sect of college football media.
Most of that negativity stems from Syracuse’s recent underperformance on the field, namely last year’s 1-10 calamity. However, part of the entire reason Syracuse is in such a mess is due to its underperformance elsewhere – specifically, on the recruiting trail, and particularly when compared to ACC opponents.
We’ve dug into Syracuse’s lacking recent in-state recruiting history here at the Fizz, but it’s worth starting to talk about how poorly Syracuse has done against ACC competition. The numbers are pretty grim.

FSU football: Noles offer 2022 three-star athlete Jordan Anthony (chopchat.com; Hunt)
FSU football has most of its 2022 recruiting class filled but is still evaluating talent. The Noles have 15 commitments with about 10 spots left in the class.
One area that remains fluid is the wide receiver position. The Noles have one commitment in three-star South Florida native Davaughn Mortimer, and they’ll be looking to add around two more receivers in the class.
Most of their recruiting targets are established, but the coaching staff added a new name to the list Wednesday afternoon.
Three-star athlete Jordan Anthony received an offer from the Noles and announced the news on his Twitter account:
Jordan Anthony ranks as the No. 560 player and No. 49 athlete nationally. He ranks as the No. 14 player in Mississippi.
Anthony checks in at 5’11” and 160 pounds with 22 offers from schools like FSU, Ole Miss, Syracuse, Boston College, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Tennessee, and some smaller schools.

As part of our summer ACC rankings series, in addition to the more fun categories (stadiums, uniforms, etc.), we’ll also be ranking each position group for every ACC team. This exercise provides an excellent opportunity to take stock of not only BC’s talent and depth at each position but also compare to the rest of the conference. At the end of this series, we should see how each team stacks up against each other and predict how each team will finish. One note before we begin: this process will take all players into account, not just the starters. At certain positions, depth is arguably just as important as talent. Last week, we looked at the wide receiver position, and the Eagles came out on top, pulling a somewhat surprising upset over established programs like Clemson and Miami. Can the Eagles stay at the top of the hill, even in the wake of Hunter Long’s departure to the NFL?

14. Syracuse: Chris Elmore (FB), Luke Benson, Maximilian Mang, Steven Mahar Jr., Landon Morris
The Orange bring up the rear once again as they struggle to get out of the basement of the ACC. Part of the reason why Syracuse ranks so low in this position is by design. Tight ends are not prioritized in Dino Babers’ spread offense, preferring to line up with four wide receivers. Occasionally, Babers likes to use a fullback or H-back as a blocker in the backfield, and Chris Elmore will fill this role. Elmore played offensive line last year due to injuries, and at 6’ and 283 pounds, he was serviceable there. But he’s back to his more traditional fullback role, where he’ll serve primarily as a blocker when Cuse elects to run the ball. Luke Benson is a more traditional type of tight end; he played in every game the last two seasons and made seven starts. However, he is not a very dynamic player overall, as he was only targeted 13 times last season and only caught six passes for 63 yards.

With that in mind, we’ll start going through some position-by-position rankings for the ACC as things ramp up. To kick things off: here’s a statistical look at the top wide receivers in the ACC — starting with No. 5.
5. Mike Harley, Miami
Over his first three seasons with Miami, Harley hauled in 68 receptions for 816 yards and three touchdowns. The talent was always there, but with a myriad of quarterback issues, and needing to split touches with other talented skill players, Harley never quite had a signature season.That all changed when D’Eriq King arrived, though.
During his breakout 2020 season, Harley posted 57 receptions for 799 yards (14.0 yards per catch) and eight touchdowns. Working with an accomplished quarterback, Harley nearly mirrored what he did in the three prior seasons.
Now, Harley will partner up with Oklahoma transfer Charleston Rambo, who recorded 1,180 receiving yards and nine touchdown receptions during three seasons with Lincoln Riley’s go-go spread offense in Norman.
4. Emeka Emezie, NC State
Emezie has been a fixture of NC State’s receiving corp for years now; he’s one of the most decorated pass-catchers in program history. Emezie ranks fifth in school history with 169 career receptions and seventh in career receiving yards (2,093).Going back over the last three seasons, the 6-foot-3 (212 pounds) Emezie has a catch in 32 consecutive games. During the 2020 campaign, he was one of the most efficient receivers in the country: a catch machine, who also averaged a career-best 15.7 yards per catch.

ACC's biggest transfer portal additions (247sports.com; Howe)
The college football season is almost here which means it is time to take a look at the ACC's top transfer portal additions. For one final time, 247Sports has updated its transfer portal top 150 ahead of 2021 openers to further emphasize how impactful some of these talented players could be at their new programs.
The transfer portal has changed the way coaching staffs recruit, often a means to solve personnel issues in key spots with players who already have substantial gameday experience at a high level.
The ACC has seen meaningful portal additions across the board. Of the top ten, Miami has two of the top five players while Florida State has three of the top ten. Other teams represented are North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Louisville, and Boston College.

1. TYRIQUE STEVENSON DB, MIAMI (FROM GEORGIA)
In two years and 19 games at Georgia, Stevenson has totaled 47 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, and 10 pass breakups. Stevenson is a former 247Sports Composite four-star recruit out of Homestead, Florida. He was also the No. 37 ranked overall player and the No. 3 ranked cornerback in the recruiting class of 2019. Stevenson is an elite athlete and has the talent to be an all-ACC defender this year in a scheme that fits him well. CBS Sports college football expert Ben Kercheval recently ranked the top transfer portal additions by each ACC team this offseason and Stevenson was among those listed."Stevenson is an interesting case," Kercheval wrote. "He arrived at Georgia with a lot of fanfare -- he was a four-star recruit and a top-50 player per 247Sports Composite rankings in 2019 -- and was going to be a starter for the Bulldogs in 2021. But he was unhappy with how he was used during his first two seasons and had just four starts to his name. At Miami, he should be stationed permanently at his more natural position at cornerback. He's a big corner at 6-feet and 214 pounds with the speed of someone 30 pounds lighter. His impact on the outside of Miami's defense in 2021 could be huge if he sees more snaps."

The family that runs Borio’s Restaurant on Oneida Lake is ramping up its three-year-old effort to find a buyer for the property.
Borio’s, a lakeside dining and event destination, has been for sale since 2018, and is now scheduled for an auction on July 26. The starting bid is $550,000 for the 13,000-square-foot restaurant and banquet building and the four-acre lakeshore property.
The auction is intended to boost interest and visibility for the property, said Marty Borio, a member of the third generation of his family to operate the business. The potential sale has been slowed by the family’s desire to find a suitable buyer and by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the meantime, the family is still running the 61-year-old business as usual. This summer, with the Covid-19 pandemic winding down, both the restaurant and its adjoining banquet/wedding facility at 8891 McConnell’s Parkway are as busy as ever, Borio said.
