National-Flitch-Day.jpg

Welcome to National Flitch Day!

A flitch is a measurement for bacon. It is half or one side of a pig and is now known as a slab in the United States. Flitch Day is based on and dedicated to an old English custom which goes back to at least the thirteenth or fourteenth century, and by some accounts to 1104. The custom was also mentioned in Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, which was published in the late fourteenth century.

The custom mainly took place in two locations: Whichnoure (now Wychnor Hall), Staffordshire, and Little Dunmow in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. In Little Dunmow, married couples would prove that neither one of them had had any thoughts over the previous year and a day in which they wished that they hadn't been married. The couple would kneel in the churchyard on two hard, pointed stones while taking an oath in front of monks and the rest of the town. If it was believed that they hadn't had any thoughts of regret, they were given a flitch of bacon and were paraded around town. It was quite rare for a couple to actually be given a slab of bacon. The custom lasted until the mid-eighteenth century. It was also brought to America by English colonists but was not long practiced there.

Dino Babers leads the Orange out to take on the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019, at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C.

Will SU football be better in 2021? Babers is just as curious as us (PS; $; Mink)

Dino Babers didn’t have to wait until kickoff last year to know it could be a long season.

A run of injuries led him to start the fullback on the offensive line. His top two rushers chose not to suit up. His SEC-transfer was one of the few who lost his bid to play without having to sit a year.

By the third game, Babers lost his All-American safety.

In the fourth game, he lost his starting quarterback.

“The dominoes kept falling,” Babers said, “and they weren’t falling in our direction.”

They finally started to in early December. Quarterback Tommy DeVito decided he wasn’t going to bail. The next day, defensive lineman Josh Black announced he was returning for a sixth season. Then offensive lineman Airon Servais said he was staying for his sixth year. Three more senior defensive linemen returned. So did Chris Elmore, the fullback who jumped in at guard.

Retaining six seniors off last year’s team — a group dubbed “the bridge” by Babers — is keeping the flicker of hope for a winning season alive.

Position Breakdown: Special Teams — 2021 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (thejuice; Cheng)

As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a unit-by-unit preview each week over the summer. This week, we’re breaking down Syracuse’s special teams.

Projected Starters

Punter: James Williams. Ranked as the No. 4 punter in the 2020 class, Williams is the likely starter after Nolan Cooney decided to forego his extra year of eligiblity at Syracuse. He redshirted in 2020 and looks to carry on the tradition of All-Conference (and NFL-bound) punters at Syracuse.

Returner: Trebor Pena. As a true freshman, Pena appeared in nine games, primarily on special teams. He was named ACC Specialist of the Week after he returned a 98-yard kickoff return against NC State on Nov. 30, SU’s first kickoff a return for a touchdown since 2011.

Kicker: Andre Szmyt: Szmyt is likely NFL bound after this year, though his production has tailed off since he was the first Syracuse player to win the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s top kicker in 2018. He was an All-ACC Third Team Selection in 2019, and missed the team entirely in 2020 after converting 9-of-11 field goals and 23-of-24 PATs. It’s likely he’ll handle kick-off duties, as well.

Long-snapper: Aaron Bolinsky. The senior has started every game as a sophomore in 2019 and junior in 2020, and has 30 starts to his name.

How Does Dino Babers Compare to 2016’s Other Coaching Hires? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Bainbridge)

With just over a month and change to go until Syracuse football gears up for its 2021 season, we’re starting to get a better feel for what fans should expect from the team. Several publications have put together their predictions for SU’s season, and if written prognostication isn’t your forté, the Fizz is monitoring the exploits of Syracuse in the simulated realm.

In the meantime, we’ve written a lot about the SU program and head coach Dino Babers – what needs to go right, what Babers might change, and how Syracuse hasn’t recruited very well. As much as you may like Dino Babers, all these things are ripe for critique after a 1-10 season that ranks as one of the worst seasons out of the class of coaching hires in 2016.

Babers has coached the same team for five seasons, and that’s no joke – there’s only so many coaches hired prior or during 2016 who are still with their same teams. But that begs the question: are the other hires doing better or worse than Dino?

I’ve narrowed it down to a few names who I think are comparable to Babers and Syracuse as a program. Let’s take a look at how they’ve fared.

BRONCO MENDENHALL (UVA) (RECORD: 30-32)
Mendenhall’s start at UVA prior to 2016 began similarly to Dino Babers. He took over a program at a school better known for basketball and was asked to right the ship after Mike London won just 26 games at the helm over six seasons between 2010-2015. After a rough 2-10 2016, the Cavaliers improved in the win column every year, qualifying for their first bowl in six years in 2017. In 2019, the Cavs finished 9-5, won the ACC Coastal, and lost the Orange Bowl to Florida. Mendenhall’s squad took a step back in 2020 and declined to participate in a bowl, but a reason for optimism for the future comes from their recruiting. UVA’s 2021 class ranked 32nd in the entire nation, and it was the third straight year they’ve ranked in the top 10 in the ACC.

JUSTIN FUENTE (VIRGINIA TECH) (RECORD: 38-26)

This is the third simulation of the 2021 Syracuse Football Simulation hosted by Orange Fizz. 'Cuse opened the season with an impressive 29-0 win on the road at Ohio. Dino Babers and Company dropped the Dome Opener to Rutgers 57-40 in a shootout. Now the 'Cuse looks to get back on track against in-state FCS foe UAlbany. This marks the first ever meeting between the Orange and the Great Danes. Be sure to like, share, and subscribe!

Syracuse Football: 12 reasons why the Orange can go undefeated in 2021 (itlh; Fiello)

Hello everyone, let’s talk some Syracuse football!

My name is Chuck Fiello (or as some may know me on social media: @OrangeChuck). I am pleased to announce I am now a contributor to the FanSided & Inside The Loud House family. I am a positive Syracuse fan of all sports and admit that I see things through Orange-colored glasses, but that is how I enjoy my life.

I look forward to sharing many things in this relationship and want to start off with an optimistic post titled, “12 Reasons Why I Think Syracuse Football Can Go Undefeated In 2021.”

#1 The Loud House Returns And It Is Beautiful

I LOVE THE CARRIER DOME!!! It is a beautiful place filled with great memories and a home-field advantage especially when it’s THE LOUD HOUSE. Fans have been kept at home on game days for over a year and are ready to go, and I thoroughly believe loud fans mean a successful product on the field. Plus you can check out all the really cool changes that SU officials made to the Dome that I bet most fans will enjoy and will enhance their experience.

#2 The Coaching Staff Saw Last Season, Too

I think we as fans forget that the coaching staff sees the struggles just like fans do, and I think the staff will respond with adjustments that will make this program successful again.

#3 Coach Dino Babers Has Something To Prove

When Coach Babers took over at Syracuse football, I heard many say he was using this program as a stepping stone to the SEC and would be gone in 2-3 years, leaving it to one of his assistants. Coach Babers is still here, and I believe he now has something to prove.

#4 Players Remember Last Season, Too

And just like the staff and the fans, the players also saw the struggle and do not want that to be what people think of the program. They are ready to prove they are better than many think they are and to help put an entertaining product on the field.

David Teel: Predictions for All-ACC football more perilous than usual (journalnow.com; Teel)

The upcoming ACC football season is ideal for fans enamored of change. Sure, every team except Duke returns a starting quarterback, and, yes, many seniors opted in on the NCAA’s additional year of eligibility. Moreover, the league experienced no head-coaching turnover.
But only four first-team all-conference players are back from last season, the fewest since 2013. They are Boston College receiver Zay Flowers and center Alec Lindstrom, Clemson defensive tackle Bryan Bresee and N.C. State linebacker Payton Wilson.
No 1,000-yard rushers or receivers return, a function of not only 2020’s abbreviated schedules but also talent drain. The scarcity of established commodities extends to the programs themselves.

Only four of the ACC’s current 14 teams — Clemson, Miami, North Carolina and N.C. State — had winning league records last year. Notre Dame did, too, but returns to independence this season.
Six-time reigning conference champions, the Tigers are the lone ACC program to finish above .500 in the league each of the last two years — their streak is 10 consecutive winning conference seasons.

Contrast that to the Big 12, where Oklahoma, Iowa State and Texas have, at minimum, current four-year runs of winning league records, and the SEC, where Alabama, Florida and Georgia have at least three-year streaks.

Similarly, the Big Ten’s Ohio State and Iowa are on streaks of at least three seasons.

With no reliable program beyond Clemson, the preseason poll and predictions for all-conference that journalists will submit Wednesday and Thursday at the ACC Kickoff is perilous, indeed. But that’s half the fun, so here goes:

Offense

Quarterback: Sam Howell has started all 25 of North Carolina’s games the past two seasons, throwing a touchdown pass in each, multiple scoring passes in 21, and multiple interceptions in only three. His 68 touchdown passes are the most by an ACC player in his first two seasons, and the league’s career record of 107, set by Clemson’s Tajh Boyd, is within sight.
Running back: Duke’s 2-9 record last year masked Mataeo Durant’s exceptional season. His 6.8 yards per carry ranked fifth among Power Five backs with at least 100 carries. A third-team selection in 2020, N.C. State’s Zonovan Knight (5.5 yards per carry, 10 rushing touchdowns) is the lone returning All-ACC running back.

College Football 2021 Conference Power Rankings

1. SEC
2. Big Ten
3. ACC
When perennial playoff participant Clemson is your standard-bearer, you’re in pretty good shape. The Tigers showed some unexpected vulnerability in a disjointed 2020 campaign, but they continue to recruit at a high level and are clearly the Alabama of the ACC. North Carolina is thriving under Mack Brown and may produce the 2021 Heisman winner in heralded quarterback Sam Howell. Miami is on the cusp of returning to its former glory, and Florida State is never more than a couple of good recruiting classes away from contending.
4. Big 12
5. Pac-12
6. AAC

8. Sun Belt

The main building at Strigo Vineyards houses the tasting rooms.Jane Marmaduke Woodman

Strigo Vineyards: a new twist on a tasting room (Dining Out Review) (PS; Marmaduke Woodman)

Never having seen a wine wall before, we approached Strigo with curiosity. The centerpiece at Strigo is a self-serve wall of 32 wines, which the brief but interesting menu is clearly constructed to complement.

Our visit on a recent Friday evening satisfied not only our curiosity but also our appetites for good food and interesting, drinkable wines.

Set in a very pretty rural area, the vineyards at Strigo make a lovely approach to the tasting room. A refurbished farmhouse is also available for overnight guests, and there is space for meetings and parties. Our focus, however, would be on the food and wine.

Tables are spread across two floors, so if stairs are a problem, reserve a spot downstairs (though upstairs seating looked more comfortable), where the wine wall is easily accessible.
