Welcome to National Hot Dog Day!

National Hot Dog Day was started by the North American Meat Institute in 1991 and began being promoted and organized by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council after they were created by the institute in 1994. The day coincides with the Annual Hot Dog Lunch at Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., which is also sponsored by the North American Meat Institute. The lunch, which has taken place for decades, is a large hot dog picnic attended by lawmakers, administration officials, and Capitol Hill staff. The goal of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council is for similar smaller events to be held around the country. Many national and local retailers have sponsored deals on the day. This holiday also takes place during National Hot Dog Month, which started in the 1950s.

Hot dogs gained in popularity in the United States in the early twentieth century, and are similar to frankfurters and wieners, which take their names from Frankfurt, Germany, and Vienna, Austria. In the United States, hot dogs were traditionally sold at hot dog stands and carts and were prominent in New York City, as well as Chicago. They have become a prominent part of American culture, and have been closely associated with baseball. Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest and the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile have also become cultural icons.

Taj Harris Has Chance to Become Syracuse's All-Time Leading Receiver (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football's top wide receiver entering the 2021 campaign is Taj Harris. While Harris is looking for a big season to help the Orange get back to a bowl game, he also has a chance to put his mark on the school record books.

Taj Harris currently has 135 catches for 1,857 yards and 10 touchdowns during his three seasons with Syracuse. In order to top the career list in each category, Harris would need a 89 receptions for 1,035 yards and 13 touchdowns. All would be career highs.

Last season, Harris had 58 catches for 733 yards and five touchdowns in 10 games. Over 12 games, that would equate to 70 catches for 880 yards and six touchdowns. That season would put Harris third in career receptions with 205 (behind Steve Ishmael and Erv Philips), second in career receiving yards with 2,737 (behind Steve Ishmael) and tied for seventh with 16 career touchdowns. That would still be quite the accomplishment.

Of the three categories, yards seems the most attainable. In order to top the receptions list, Harris would need to increase his catches per game from 5.8 last season to 7.4, or a 27.6% jump. To become the all time leader in receiving yards, Harris would need to improve his yards per game from 73.3 to 86.3, or a 17.7% jump. Harris would have to improve his touchdowns per game from 0.5 to 1.1, or a 120% jump.

Four Former Syracuse Stars Set to Start First NFL Training Camp (SI; McAllister)

It's a very special time of year for NFL fans as the end of July is approaching, meaning the long months without on-field action are finally coming to an end. NFL Training Camps are one week away, and for the first time ever, the majority of teams will begin camps on the same day, July 27th.

While teams await the start of the upcoming campaign, rookies embark on the start of their NFL careers as early as tomorrow afternoon. First year players around the league report to training camps on July 21st, meaning hundreds of players are about to get their first taste of life in the NFL.

Of the hundreds of athletes finding an NFL home are four players who used to suit up at the Dome. The majority of Syracuse's secondary from last year (Andre Cisco, Ifeatu Melifonwu and Trill Williams) as well as punter Nolan Cooney get ready for life after 'Cuse.

Syracuse great Brendan Carney expects '6 or 7 wins' and bowl game - The Juice Online (the juice; podcast; Cheng)

With about six weeks to go to the start of the 2021 college football season, I chatted with former Syracuse punter Brendan Carney on this week’s The Juice on the Cuse Podcast, hosted by SNY.tv, about his expectations for the coming season.

Of course, outside of Syracuse, not much is expected of a team that went 1-10 in 2020 and finished 127th in the FBS in offense at 17.8 points per game.

But while most polls will project Syracuse at the bottom of the ACC, Carney has set the bar higher.

“My expectations are that we’ll get to a bowl game and win it,” Carney says. “I expect this team to be ready and competitive and every game this year.”

One of the main reasons is that Syracuse has an experienced and deep offensive line. The Orange add transfers Chris Bleich and Jakob Bradford, and every major contributor from the offensive line from last year, minus Chris Elmore, who returns to his natural fullback/tight end position.

Other reasons for Carney’s optimism include the position battle at quarterback between incumbent starter Tommy DeVito and Mississippi State transfer Garrett Shrader.

Portal power: Which transfers will have the biggest impact on ACC football? (fayobserver.com; Thompson)

Since last August, more than 2,500 FBS players have entered the NCAA transfer portal after a pandemic season that allowed for another year of eligibility and the exclusion of the normal penalties that come with switching schools.

The Atlantic Coast Conference was no exception, with hundreds of players transferring into the league for the 2021-2022 season.

So which transfer players will stand out in the ACC? Here are a few to watch.

North Carolina football transfers

RB Ty Chandler

Tennessee → North Carolina

It will be impossible to replace the production of running backs Javonte Williams and Michael Carter from last season (2,385 rushing yards and 33 total touchdowns), but the Tar Heels did their best with the addition of Chandler.

In four seasons at Tennessee, Chandler had 3,291 all-purpose yards — good for fifth-best in school history — and 17 touchdowns. He should be a good fit in UNC's offense and will be a welcome addition to the passing game behind quarterback Sam Howell. He finished his career at Tennessee with 58 catches for 465 yards and three touchdowns.

Syracuse football transfers

QB Garrett Shrader

Mississippi State → Syracuse

Mississippi State sophomore quarterback Garrett Shrader has taken K.J. Costello's arrival on campus in stride, coach Mike Leach said.

Garrett Shrader has the best beard in college football history

Shrader started four games ad appeared in 10 as a freshman for Mississippi State in 2019, passing for 1,170 yards with eight touchdowns. He added 587 yards and six touchdowns rushing.

His role diminished as a sophomore, prompting the transfer to Syracuse for the 2021 season.

OL Chris Bleich

Florida → Syracuse

Bleich started eight games as a redshirt freshman last season for Florida and could provide some necessary help for a Syracuse offensive line that has struggled to run the ball and protect its quarterback the past few seasons.

Hot Topics for ACC Kickoff: Tigers on Top, New Era, Narrative Change (SI; Senkiw)

It's been two years since the ACC held its premier event of the summer, but finally, hoards of media and every football coach from around the league will descend on Charlotte, N.C., beginning Wednesday morning.

With new direction at the helm of the conference, there will be a variety of important topics discussed at this year's ACC Kickoff. Talking season gets started with commissioner Jim Phillips' first media address. Then the Coastal Division is up.

Atlantic Division teams will hold serve Thursday, culminating in a time for storylines to emerge and build heading into the fall season.

Here are some of the "hot topics" that will surround the two-day media extravaganza:

Tigers on the big stage

Dabo Swinney always commands a crowd, and this year will be no different for the opinionated Clemson head coach. There will no doubt be twisting of words at some point, but it's also important to hear how Swinney feels about the sudden and drastic changes surrounding the sport.

ACC Media Days 2021: Star quarterbacks, new commissioner headline storylines to watch in Charlotte (cbssports.com; Patterson)

The 2021 ACC Football Kickoff will begin on Wednesday. The Coastal Division teams will have time with the media on the first day before the Atlantic Division teams wrap up the event on Thursday in uptown Charlotte, North Carolina.

The event comes with plenty of anticipation, not only as the first media days event for ACC football in two years but also as a grand introduction to new commissioner Jim Phillips. The former Northwestern athletic director was officially named as the successor to John Swofford in December 2020, just prior to the ACC Championship Game, and took office in February. He's had several conversations with media members throughout the footprint of the league and held several availability opportunities with reporters, but those conference calls and smaller meetings do not carry the pomp and circumstance of the "Commissioner's Forum" at media days.

The 2021 ACC Football Kickoff begins Wednesday with players and coaches of teams from the Coastal Division set to conduct interviews with the media.

Players and coaches from the Atlantic Division, including NC State, will fulfill their media obligations on Thursday.

Along with head coach Dave Doeren, redshirt sophomore quarterback Devin Leary, redshirt sophomore linebacker Payton Wilson and redshirt junior center Grant Gibson will be in attendance to represent the Wolfpack.

Media members must submit their ballots for the league's official preseason awards by Friday, and the results will go public shortly after.

D'Angelo: Here's what to expect from ACC Media Days (and hope for a normal season) (palmbeachpost.com; D'Angelo)

Welcome back, college football.

We had a season in 2020 — if you really want to call it that — but everything was overshadowed by a pandemic that raged out of control and was responsible for more stops and starts than I-95 traffic during rush hour.

With some luck — the coronavirus is not behind us despite what some states want you to believe — 2021 will be as close as possible to normal and for the ACC that starts Wednesday with its Football Kickoff returning to a two-day, in-person gathering.

Optimism will rule the week with each team represented by its head coach and three players, and the league trotting out its new commissioner, Jim Phillips. The narratives will extend from on the field to the changing landscape of college football and sports in general.

Will 2021 be the Miami Hurricanes' year? Stories developing around ACC football

  • Phillips outlining a plan of attack for a season that, though looking much better than 2020, still must deal with a pandemic that once again is surging. Most importantly, a plan that makes it very beneficial — if not require — all athletes to be vaccinated. (See N.C. State baseball, 2021)
  • Every coach asked about — and hopefully endorsing — the inevitable 12-game playoff model. Some may believe eight is enough, others want to take it a step further to 16. Either way, expansion is necessary and will be a popular topic.
  • More "The U is Back" talk when it comes to the Miami Hurricanes. Manny Diaz will be expected — both internally and externally — to take the program to the next level in Year 3. That means getting to the ACC title game, winning a bowl and not being embarrassed at home like UM was last season by North Carolina.
  • Clemson QB D.J. Uiagalelei sticking to a go-to answer to the question: “How are you going to fill the shoes of Trevor Lawrence?”
  • Florida State coach Mike Norvell explaining his decision to bring two QBs — McKenzie Milton and Travis Jordan — to media days. The competition will garner plenty of discussion, but Milton, the graduate transfer from UCF, is fully expected to win the job over the former Benjamin School standout.
  • Virginia Tech’s Justin Fuente asked just how hot that seat is after his AD called a press conference in December to explain why he was not firing the coach who is one-game over .500 the last three years.
  • Optimism the ACC will be more competitive and deeper than it has since Clemson started dominating the league six years ago. The Tigers will win the conference for a seventh straight year, but the depth of the league should improve.
  • North Carolina QB Sam Howell ducking questions about this being his final year, which it will be. But more importantly, the jury is out on how the Howell Era will be remembered. That will depend largely on …
  • Who wins the most important ACC game of the season pairing two conference teams? Clemson and Georgia in Week 1 will be more important to the national picture, but Miami at North Carolina Oct. 16 should determine who will face Clemson in the conference title game.
  • Dabo Swinney doing what he does best — backtrack after making a tone-deaf statement. The hypocritical Clemson coach once said, “I’ll go do something else” if players are paid because “there’s enough entitlement in this world as it is.” Well, the time has come for Swinney to walk away from that $93 million contract, right? Not a chance. Entitlement is a one-way street for Swinney.
  • Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins asked about getting over that three-win hump. Collins was tasked with the major reconstruction job of completely overhauling the triple-option and has made strides. But it’s time to see results on the field.
  • Hurricanes QB D’Eriq King in the spotlight for a variety of reasons. Off the field, the affable King is a poster boy for using the new NIL legislation to advantage. But more important will be updates on his recovery from ACL surgery.
  • How does Boston College carry over momentum from Jeff Hafley's first season? Hafley was a coach of the year candidate in 2020, finishing 6-5. Now the Eagles will have to live up to the "Team on the Rise" label. QB Phil Jurkovec emerged last season and returns along with an experienced OL and solid playmakers.
  • What will it take for Syracuse coach Dino Babers to return? It’s looking more and more like 2018 (10-3) was an outlier. The Orange are 6-17 since, including 1-10 a year ago. Babers joins Fuente on the hot seat.

Best Stadium Songs (SN)

From Sporting News...

Dancing in the seats: The 15 best stadium songs in college and pro sports, ranked

Here's SN's top 15, including their ACC-related comments (click the link to read the rest)...
#15 Washington Nationals: 'Take On Me' by A-ha
#14 New England Patriots: 'This Is Our House' by Bon Jovi
#13 Notre Dame football: 'I'm Shipping Up To Boston' by Dropkick Murphys
Released: 2006
History of the song: The lyrics about a sailor who has lost both his leg and the peg designed to replace it are credited to legendary folk musician Woody Guthrie. But the Dropkick Murphys handled the glorious instrumental mix that made their record so distinctive. Its Celtic folk-dance style connects so immediately to the audience and conveys such an obvious sense of place that it added a necessary urgency to the score of Scorsese’s Oscar-winning film “The Departed.”
History with Notre Dame: “Shipping Up To Boston” is played as part of the pre-kickoff routine at Notre Dame Stadium. First, there is a haunting acapella folk song called “Here Come the Irish” — written by Jim Tullio with lyrics by former ND center John Scully — sung by Jefferson Starship lead singer Cathy Richardson. Then, as that last note hits, there is an immediate segue into the Dropkick Murphys’ version of “Boston,” with its unmistakable mix of banjo and accordion leading into guitar power chords and then the full band playing at once. Notre Dame’s presentation never gets to the singing part (if that’s what we want to call it).
#12 Alabama football: 'Sweet Home Alabama' by Lynyrd Skynyrd
#11 Ohio State football: 'Hang On Sloopy' by The McCoys
#10 New York Yankees: 'Theme from New York, New York' by Frank Sinatra
#9 Cincinnati Bengals: 'Welcome to The Jungle' by Guns N’ Roses
#8 West Virginia: 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' by John Denver
#7 Green Bay Packers: 'Bang the Drum All Day' by Todd Rundgren
#6 Southern California football: 'Tusk' by Fleetwood Mac
#5 Pittsburgh Steelers: 'Renegade' by Styx
#4 Boston Red Sox: 'Sweet Caroline' by Neil Diamond*
#3 Wisconsin football: 'Jump Around' by House of Pain
#2 Liverpool FC: 'You’ll Never Walk Alone' by Gerry and the Pacemakers

Mike Tirico ’88 inherits a tradition begun by Bob Costas ’74 (right), who was the face of NBC Olympics for 24 years.

Orange Voices of the Summer Olympics - Syracuse.edu (syracuse.edu)

When Mike Tirico ’88 debuts as the Summer Olympics’ primetime host, he will continue a Syracuse University tradition begun by Bob Costas ’74. “I am following Bob, not replacing him,” says Tirico, who graduated weeks before Costas presented his first NBC Olympics telecast. “He literally passed the torch to me—we have photos of it. I consider him a friend and a mentor.”

Tirico recalls Costas’ 40-year run at NBC Sports Group, more than half of which was spent at the helm of NBC Olympics. “I may take my own approach to anchoring the Games, but Bob still exerts a big influence on me,” explains Tirico, who anchored his first NBC Olympics primetime show at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. “He took this job to the top of the mountain.”

Costas and fellow broadcasting legend Marv Albert ’63 (who called his last NBA game on July 3) inspired Tirico to attend Syracuse University. As the inaugural recipient of the Bob Costas Scholarship, he dual majored in political science and broadcast journalism. Such blending of the liberal arts and professional studies has informed Tirico’s lustrous career, renowned for its editorial and journalistic integrity. “I went to Syracuse to become a sportscaster, but left as a broadcast journalist,” he says, smiling.

Netflix for Notre Dame? Be nice to have something like that, here. Either that, or the ACCN peeking in on programs once a week. Do they do that?

Definitely Fuente. He has destroyed a good program. He will not make it through 2021. Feel bad for the Hokie fans. They deserve a winning team.

Babers inherited a bad program. Different situations.

I think the ACCN has been a mess from day one. A lot of bad hires. A lot of incompetence. Very little insightful programming and way too much focus on a handful of schools.

Hopefully more of the awful hires get let go and things start to improve. I don't think the B1G Network or the SEC Network are great but both are better than ours.

Really need more insiders from each program talking about things. I think the idea to have a show where members of the press for different schools get together to talk ACC sports, like The Sports Reporters, would be great. With all the advances in virtual meetings, this could be done very cheaply and would be something fresh for fans to watch. Watching 20 year old ACC games gets old quick.

Depends in large part on how the Coronavirus pandemic is going. Honestly, what I'd really like to do is make my own road trip - to Syracuse, to check out the Dome rennovations.

I'd like to play you guys every year
