Welcome to National Chicken Wing Day!

Hot, spicy, plain, sticky, or sweet, it seems Americans never have enough chicken wings to eat. In fact, they eat about 30 billion of them per year. Wings come in numerous flavors, such as lemon pepper, pepper parmesan, barbecue, honey mustard, sweet and sour, and garlic. They are often dipped in blue cheese, ranch dressing, or plum sauce, and are served with celery sticks and carrot sticks.

The most famous are Buffalo wings, which were invented in Buffalo, New York. Fittingly, National Chicken Wing Day was proclaimed by Buffalo Mayor Stan Makowski in 1977. Buffalo wings are deep-fried without any breading, and then coated or dipped in a vinegar-based cayenne pepper hot sauce and melted butter. They are usually served with blue cheese dressing or ranch dressing, and with carrot sticks and celery sticks.

Buffalo wings were invented by Teressa Bellissimo at Buffalo's Anchor Bar in 1964. According to multiple stories, Teressa, who owned the bar with her husband Frank, deep-fried some wings for her son Dominic and his college friends, who had come into the bar hoping for a late-night snack. Before serving them, she tossed them with cayenne hot sauce and butter. Chicken wings had otherwise usually used for chicken stock at the bar, and according to some accounts, the bar had recently accidentally received a shipment of wings and had too many to know what to do with.

Syracuse kicker is on the preseason watch list for Lou Groza Award (PS; $; Mink)

Syracuse kicker Andre Szmyt is on the preseason watch list for the Lou Groza Award, presented annually to the nation’s top placekicker.

Szmyt, who won the award in 2018, could set school records for career field goals and career points this season. He’s four field goals shy of the school record for most makes and needs 44 points for the scoring mark.

A fifth-year junior, Szmyt is the program’s leader in career field-goal percentage (.862, 56-for-65). That accuracy ranks among the top 10 in the sport dating back to at least 1956.

Szmyt could become the second player to win the Groza award multiple times. Former Florida State kicker and first-round draft pick Sebastian Janikowski won in 1998 and 1999.

Szmyt is one of 30 kickers on the preseason watch list put out by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. Five other ACC kickers are on the list: NC State’s Chris Dunn, Wake Forest’s Nick Sciba, Clemson’s B.T. Potter, Duke’s Charlie Ham and Louisville’s James Turner.

ACC Football: Examining Over/Under Win Totals for the 2021 Season (athlonsports.com; Josephs)

The ACC has some very intriguing storylines entering the 2021 college football season with Clemson hoping to continue its domination of the conference while the likes of North Carolina in the Coastal Division and NC State in the Atlantic hope to dethrone the Tigers. The Tar Heels have the potential No. 1 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft in quarterback Sam Howell while the Wolfpack feature 17 returning starters. There's a lot of depth in the ACC so let's take a look at each team's win total and try to find some value.

Note: Win total numbers courtesy of DraftKings.

ACC Atlantic

Boston College (Over 7 -148...Under 7 +115)

Non-Conference Games: Colgate, at UMass, at Temple, Missouri
Schedule Notes: Boston College has some very interesting non-conference games including a home tilt against an SEC team before a road trip to Clemson. The Eagles host Virginia Tech and Florida State in November as part of a closing stretch of three of four at home.
QB: Phil Jurkovec
Roster Notes: Jurkovec and WR Zay Flowers are a great start for an offense that found its footing last season under new head coach Jeff Hafley, who led the team to six victories. The offensive line has two rocks in Alec Lindstrom and Ben Petrula, but last season's leading rusher, David Bailey, transferred. The defense returns nine starters from an unit that needs to generate make more plays behind the line of scrimmage.

Prediction: Lean to the over here as the schedule lines up nicely, but not at this price. Shop around to find something better.

Clemson (Over 11.5 +110...Under 11.5 -139)

Non-Conference Games: Georgia (in Charlotte, N.C.), South Carolina State, Connecticut, at South Carolina
Schedule Notes: The Tigers open up with a massive test against one of the SEC's best. The other regular-season test comes on Sept. 25 in Raleigh against NC State. Clemson closes out the year with three of its final five at home.
QB: DJ Uiagalelei
Roster Notes: Uiagalelei got his first taste of action last year and threw five touchdowns with no interceptions. He's got no safety net behind him so health is an important factor. Wide receiver Justyn Ross' return from a neck injury could be a huge boost and the receiving corps also features TE Braden Galloway, a legitimate NFL prospect. The offensive line should be rock-solid with Lyn J-Dixon leading a talented stable of running backs. Ten starters return on defense, which starts up front with an athletic and deep defensive line. The secondary will miss cornerback Derion Kendrick (who transferred to Georgia), but this group should be able to get the job done.

Prediction: I don't see this Clemson team going undefeated so I'd take the under.

Florida State (Over 5.5 -134...Under 5.5 +105)
Non-Conference Games: Notre Dame, Jacksonville State, UMass, at Florida
Schedule Notes: There is a real opportunity to start fast as the Seminoles have five of their first seven at home before a road trip to Clemson. They close with potentially two road dates against Boston College and Florida.
QB: UCF transfer McKenzie Milton vs. Jordan Travis
Roster Notes: If Milton is healthy and he beats Travis for the job, FSU could be interesting to watch on offense. Travis' mobility (seven rushing TDs in 2020) and experience in the system will keep him in the competition for the No. 1 spot into fall camp most likely. There are plenty of weapons at WR in Ontaria Wilson, Keyshawn Helton, and Kansas transfer Andrew Parchment. The offensive line returns intact for former Texas A&M transfer Jashaun Corbin to run behind. The defense returns just five starters, but their top three tacklers are part of that group. We'll see if some SEC transfers can help improve this side of the ball.

Prediction: I come up with five or six wins, but lean a little bit to the over. If the defense can take the next step and gel with the transfers then this could be a seven-win team. But there's not a lot of margin for error either, so be wary of the under.

Louisville (Over 7 +125...Under -159)

Non-Conference Games: Ole Miss (in Atlanta), Eastern Kentucky, UCF, Kentucky
Schedule Notes: The Cardinals have just two true home games over the first five weeks of the season. They host Clemson on Nov. 6 the week after they travel to NC State. Three of the final four contests are at home.
QB: Malik Cunningham
Roster Notes: The offense has plenty of starters back in all the right places with Cunningham leading the way. He had 19 touchdowns, but also accounted for 15 turnovers. It'll be interesting to see how they use Georgia Southern transfer Shai Werts, who was a dual-threat quarterback for the Eagles that is expected to line up at wide receiver for Louisville. Hassan Hall and Jalen Mitchell are a pretty solid running back duo. On defense, the team's top two tacklers are gone and only five starters return. This side of the ball was solid last season but is a concern entering 2021 because of the roster turnover.

Prediction: The money move is right as I have six or seven wins.

NC State (Over 6 -159...Under 6 +125)

Non-Conference Games: USF, at Mississippi State, Furman, Louisiana Tech
Schedule Notes: The Wolfpack have four of their first five at home, but the Louisiana Tech game on Oct. 2 could be a potential banana peel contest after hosting Clemson the week before. After a bye week NC State plays four of five on the road before closing things out with back-to-back home games.
QB: Devin Leary
Roster Notes: Leary had eight touchdown passes to two interceptions last year before breaking his leg. He should be healthy and he'll have his top three targets back in Emeka Emezie, Thayer Thomas and Devin Carter. The offensive line needs improvement but returns four starters and the running game should be solid with Bam Knight and Ricky Person Jr. sharing carries. Defensive tackle Alim McNeill will be missed but the linebacking corps ranks among the best in the nation with Payton Wilson, Isaiah Moore and Drake Thomas.

Prediction: Slightest of leans to the over but definitely not at this price.

Syracuse (Over 3.5 +105...Under 3.5 -134)

Non-Conference Games: at Ohio, Rutgers, Albany, Liberty
Schedule Notes: After a tough road trip to a MAC school, the Orange have five of their next six at home. They host Clemson, but also have road trips to NC State and Virginia Tech.
QB Battle: Tommy DeVito vs. Mississippi State transfer Garrett Shrader
Roster Notes: DeVito has the edge because he's been in the system, but Shrader is the more intriguing quarterback option because of his mobility. The offensive line was hideous last year, allowing almost four sacks per game so it may be a good thing that just two starters return up front. There's a solid group of running backs along with Taj Harris and Anthony Queeley out wide. Experience is not an issue on defense with 10 starters back and 11 of the top 12 tacklers from last season. There are three super seniors up front in Josh Black, McKinley Williams and Kingsley Jonathan. They'll need to get pressure to protect a secondary that may take some time to come together.

Clemson football: CFB analyst says Tigers, FSU could challenge ACC Grant of Rights (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

The Clemson football program has absolutely dominated the ACC over the last half-decade and nothing seems to be standing in the way of that continued dominance in the future.

There were rumors circulating towards the end of last week that Clemson, along with Florida State, Michigan and Ohio State, had serious contacts with the SEC about potentially joining and forming a super conference of at least 20 teams.

Those rumors were shut down by many because of the ACC’s Grant of Media Rights deal, which is in place until 2036, and basically cements schools into the conference until that point.

However, national CFB analyst Andy Staples appeared on the Paul Finebaum show earlier this week and said he wouldn’t be surprised if Clemson and Florida State potentially challenged that Grant of Rights deal to see how it would hold up.

“Does the Grant of Rights in the ACC hold up? It runs through the ESPN contract through 2036 and those schools should be tied down to that conference theoretically until that time. But would anyone try to challenge it? Would Clemson want to go to the SEC, would Florida State want to go to the SEC? If that thing holds up, I don’t know that you’ll see complete rearrangement, but if somehow it didn’t, things would get really interesting,” Staples said.

Clemson football: The “paw” is the biggest brand in college football (rubbingtherock.com; Benedict)

Clemson football brand is bigger than ever and growing faster than anyone could ever have imagined.

The 2021 Clemson football roster consists of athletes from across the globe and the Tigers seemingly have pipelines from the four best states for college football prospects – California, Texas, Georgia, and Florida.

Amid all the conference expansion talks, SEC Networks Paul Finebaum once again had the Tigers on his mind. For a guy that is paid as much as he is to talk about the SEC, he sure does spend a lot of time talking about and worrying about Clemson football.

That alone should tell you how well the brand behind the Tiger paw is doing.

Clemson football has grown into a force the SEC never wanted to see
When Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney speaks, everyone stops to hear what he says, everyone. Usually, they do it in order to misquote him or chide him but nevertheless, they stop what they are doing and he is the most trending story on social media, Google, and sports outlets.

Kirby Smart, Ryan Day, Lincoln Riley, nor any other coach across the country have that same effect – including Nick Saban.

Sure, those coaches are quoted every now and then, but Dabo trends in February when no one is paying attention to college football – that is the power behind the paw. No matter how badly media, fans, or coaches bad-mouth Swinney or Clemson football, elite recruits around the country want to be part of what is happening in the sleepy South Carolina town because of the branding behind the Tigers.

There are nine signs that you have a strong brand and Clemson football checks off all nine of them:

Five Must-Watch ACC Games In 2021 (solidverbal.com; Mighell)

At first glance, the ACC is just Clemson and everyone else. That won’t change this year. Clemson will indeed be dominant, and everyone else is probably playing for second place.

But there are some decent indicators that the second place race will be close and fun to watch. Multiple top-flight quarterback talents, whole returning squads thanks to last year’s truncated season, and interesting matchups abound. The ACC’s conference championship race should unfold every week in intriguing ways.

But the season hasn’t started yet! Ain’t nothin’ to watch!! What the heck could I, a writer who usually writes about watching college football every week, have to write about right now???

I decided to look at the ACC schedule and take a somewhat-too-early stab at which games you absolutely MUST watch.

A couple of ground rules:

1) If there’s an out-of-conference game I think is particularly stellar, and I think one team has more to lose than the other, then it’ll go in that team’s conference preview.

2) I’ll give you the time and channel for each game in my weekly columns throughout the year, but I can’t do that quite yet, as the particulars aren’t set in stone

GEORGIA VS. CLEMSON (WEEK 1)
For my money, this is bound to be the most interesting opening-week matchup. Clemson has a Heisman contender at quarterback in D.J. Uiagalelei, but I’m not sure who’s taking handoffs, and while Justyn Ross is back from injury out wide, I don’t know who else will be hauling in D.J.’s throws. But while Clemson has a couple question marks on offense, it probably has the best defense in college football. Can the Tigers avoid the Week 1 jitters? And if they can’t, can Georgia take advantage? The Bulldogs are absolutely LOADED on offense, with JT Daniels once again slinging it all over the place. Georgia also boasts a top-flight defense. The game itself is at a neutral site: Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, the home of the Carolina Panthers. This is SUCH a hard one to pick, and that alone should make for a fun watch.

FLORIDA STATE VS. LOUISVILLE (WEEK 4)

College Football Conference Expansion: Which End-Game Do You Choose? (cornnation.com; McHugh)

Last night I was asked what I think is going to happen with conference expansion and retraction.

My response? “No clue.”

That really should be the only genuine and truthful response unless your name is Greg Sankey, the SEC Commissioner, who appears to hold the keys to college football itself at this moment.

The only thing we appear to know is that Texas and Oklahoma are bound for the SEC. What happens next? There will have to be a reaction of some type.

If you saw Avengers: Infinity War (spoiler alert?) you will remember the scene where Doctor Strange is essentially over in the corner freaking out or fizzling out or however you want to describe it as he is experiencing every possible outcome the Avengers will experience in this battle with Thanos. There are millions of possibilities but only one in which the Avengers win.

While there may not be millions of different ways this could end up there are definitely at least seven. Well at least the seven that I picked out below.

These seven are the most interesting ways I can see this conference expansion ending. By ending, I mean it has come to it’s conclusion whether it be in five years or twenty years. In fact, every form of expansion and retraction could inevitably lead to the last option at the bottom of the article.

So which end-game do you choose?

First: Four Groups of 16 Teams: The SEC, Big Ten, Pac-12 and the ACC

Nobody seems to agree on what schools each conference should add but just for argument’s sake I had to pick some. Replace any of the schools as you wish.

SEC: Current Group + Texas and Oklahoma
Big Ten: Current Group + Kansas and Iowa State
Pac-12: Current Group + Boise State and Oklahoma State
ACC: Current Group + West Virginia and Central Florida

The remaining teams left in the Big 12 would be Kansas State, Baylor, Texas Tech and TCU.

Cazenovia brewery to open satellite tasting room in Syracuse’s Inner Harbor (PS; $; Cazentre)

Meier’s Creek, the brewery/taproom that took over the former Empire Farm Brewery location in Cazenovia last year, is now looking at a move into the city of Syracuse.

Meier’s Creek plans to open a satellite taproom — without its own brewhouse — in the Iron Pier Apartments residential-commercial development at 720 Van Rensselaer St. in the Inner Harbor.

The tasting room will offer beers made at the big Meier’s Creek brewhouse on Route 13 in Cazenovia, along with an abbreviated version of its Cazenovia food menu, said Jordan Pollock, the brewery’s director of brewing operations and sales. That means pizzas, wings, appetizers etc.

The taproom will occupy a 4,000-square-foot space in the retail section of the development and could be open by October, Pollock said.

“It’s a great way for us to improve our exposure,” Pollock said. “We have a great place in Cazenovia, but that’s an hour, hour-and-a-half drive for a lot of people in Central New York. A location in the city would definitely help get the word out and maybe help people think of making that drive to Cazenovia.”

Meier’s Creek Brewing opened last summer at 33 Rippleton Road (Route 13) just south of the village of Cazenovia. That had been the location for the Empire Farm Brewery, which declared bankruptcy and closed in 2019.

I kinda like Corn Nation's third scenario, where the ACC loses Clemson and FSU (sad) but picks up Penn State, Maryland, Rutgers and WVU. That would be an interesting blend of old ACC and Eastern Idependents.
