Scott Dumas, CEO of Papyrus Business Solutions and a partner in the Gere Block project, said the grant is vital to his ability to obtain private financing for the redevelopment. “Without it, a project like this can’t get off the ground,” he said. “It simply couldn’t happen.” Built by the Gere family in 1874 and later expanded, the three-story building sits near the intersection of West Fayette Street and Erie Boulevard West. It is believed to have been used initially as an Erie Canal warehouse. At the time, the canal ran behind the building. The canal was filled in and paved over in the 1920s, but a portion of the canal wall remains at the rear of the building. Until recently, the wall was hard to see because it was covered by weeds, but workers have cleared away much of the vegetation in preparation for the site’s redevelopment. Dumas said his goal is to restore the building to its former status as a commerce hub. The building and the surrounding area were the center of what was the village of Geddes, which was annexed by the city in 1886. Adjoining properties held coal yards, salt sheds, a lumber yard and a planing mill. Sanford Motor Truck Co., a maker of fire trucks, occupied the building from 1913 to 1937. Strathmore Paints, a paint manufacturer, occupied it from 1942 until 2018. Its name still appears on the building’s exterior. The building has been vacant since Strathmore moved out.
