It is celebrated differently in Western and Eastern churches, and there are various customs around the world. The word "epiphany" comes from a Greek word meaning "to appear." Epiphany may have originated in the eastern half of the Roman Empire as a feast to honor Jesus' baptism, and then expanded to include a celebration of his birth, the visit of the Magi, and the events of Jesus' childhood. The day began being celebrated in the latter half of the fourth century. In Western churches the day commemorates the visit of the Magi—the day that Jesus was revealed to Gentiles. In some Western denominations, Epiphany starts the liturgical season of Epiphanytide, and the night before is many times celebrated as Twelfth Night. SU News Former Syracuse coach Greg Robinson dies at 70 (fightingirishwire.udatoday.com; Shepkowski) Two-time Super Bowl champion defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos Greg Robinson has died at the age of 70. Robinson coordinated the Denver defense in their victories in Super Bowls XXXIII and XXXIV before making his way back to the college game. After a stop as the defensive coordinator at Texas in 2004, Williams was named Syracuse’s head coach beginning with the 2005 season. Syracuse lost their first 21 games under his direction after finally getting him a win against in 2007. He would win just three more before it was announced that he would be fired at the end of the 2008 season. After the announcement, Robinson coached out the string beginning with an away contest at Notre Dame. That afternoon the 2-8 Orange shocked Charlie Weis and the Fighting Irish with a 24-23 victory in what was one of the worst home losses ever for the Notre Dame program (photos below). The one good thing to happen that day for the Irish was that Manti Te’o made his official visit to campus and despite the student section pelting the home sideline with snowballs for much of the afternoon, wound up attending Notre Dame. RIP to Robinson, a football lifer who spent nearly 50 years playing or coaching the game. On the Block On Demand 1-5 (ESPN; radio; Axe) Brent shares how SU will need to play in order to beat Miami tonight and comments on the passing of former Syracuse football head coach Greg Robinson North Carolina Football: 3 early 2022 signees who’ll have instant impacts (saturdayblitz.com; Caudell) North Carolina football had a disappointing 6-7 season in 2021. Who are some instant impact recruits who could help them turn things around? North Carolina football came into the season ranked in the top 10 and was considered dark horses for the College Football Playoff. Quarterback Sam Howell was going to be a Heisman contender and the Tar Heels would challenge Clemson in the ACC. None of that materialized and North Carolina finished the season at 6-7 after an embarrassing bowl performance against South Carolina. It is possible that head coach Mack Brown will enter the season on the hot seat. The good news for Tar Heel fans is that their school is bringing in the top-ranked recruiting class in the ACC. North Carolina is also one of the few schools that signed multiple five-star prospects. This program has stepped up its recruiting under Brown and that has been one of the only consistent things about North Carolina under him. With Clemson going through a down season and coaching and roster turnover elsewhere in the ACC, there is a chance for North Carolina to take a step forward as a program. This has been one of the more underrated jobs in the country and some are now seeing that this program can recruit at a high level. Now, the results just have to be seen on the field and they were not in 2021. Look for this team to finally take a step forward next season and to continue to do well on the recruiting trail as well. Here are the three early signees that will make an instant impact with North Carolina in 2022. ... ACC analyst bullish on Clemson heading into 2022 season (theclemsoninsider.com; Oliver) On the Packer and Durham show on ACC Network this week, Mark Packer and Wes Durham discussed which ACC teams they believe have the most reason for optimism heading into the 2022 season. Durham posed the following question to Packer — if he had to pick a winner for the Atlantic and Coastal divisions, right now, who would he pick? “I would go Clemson in the Atlantic,” Packer said. “I’m going to go Miami in the Coastal.” Durham then asked Packer if it’s fair to say that while the Tigers showed enough in their Cheez-It Bowl win over Iowa State to get excited about where they are defensively entering next season, they still have “this outlier there with the quarterback spot.” “Yeah, but I will tell you this — I think at the end of the year, I think Clemson was playing better than anybody in the league,” Packer said. Durham agreed with Packer’s pick of Clemson as the 2022 Atlantic Division champion to a certain extent, but added, “I’m going to hold just a couple of edges on the Clemson pick here for a spot with Wake and for a spot with potentially NC State.” “Because I think NC State is bringing back a lot, a whole lot,” Durham explained. “But I want to see what it looks like on paper before I commit fully to the Wolfpack here.” ... Rx: Scheduling Around Labor Day Monday (RX; HM) [HEADING=2]Rx: Scheduling Around Labor Day Monday[/HEADING] I'm going to drop some pearls on you... We’d better get used to it (PS; Coin) Last year was the second warmest in Syracuse since records began 120 years ago. Fueling that warmth were the hottest August and October ever recorded. Summer nighttime heat broke a 66-year-old record. Even December was the second warmest on record. And we had far less snow but much more rain in 2021. Welcome to the realities of climate change, climatologists say. “That is consistent with our understanding of climate change: We’d get warmer and we’d get wetter,” said Judah Cohen, a climatologist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Syracuse is both warmer and wetter, according to the new normals issued by National Weather Service last year. From 1991 to 2020, the average temperature in Syracuse climbed 0.3 degrees and precipitation increased by 1.4 inches a year compared to the previous 30-year normal period. Those two thing go together: Warmer air holds more water. Last year was wet but not very snowy: Syracuse got its 9th wettest year on record in 2021, but 50 inches less snow than normal. More precipitation fell as rain, much of it in summer deluges that caused extensive flooding. It wasn’t just last year: 2020 was the fourth-hottest year on record. And six of the 10 warmest years in Syracuse have occurred in just the past 25 years. That mirrors what’s happening around the world, said Martin Dovciak, a professor at SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry, who studies the impacts of climate change on forests. “Years from 1980 were warmer than average -- all of them – and 2010 to 2020 were all warmest years on record globally,” Dovciak said. “The climate system is variable, but the general trend is toward more warm years as we go forward.” Data aren’t final for 2021, but based on temperatures through November, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said “it is virtually certain” that 2021 will be one of the 10 warmest years on record globally. ...
