Welcome to Great Lakes Awareness Day!
Great Lakes Awareness Day celebrates the Great Lakes and highlights the issues they face, and how the lakes can be preserved. Events for the day have involved organizations such as schools, aquariums, and museums. There is not much information available online about how the day is celebrated or how it came to be.
There are five Great Lakes: Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Erie. Together they make up the largest body of freshwater on Earth and stretch 750 miles from east to west. They are located on the border of the United States and Canada and touch the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, New York, and Pennsylvania. It is believed that at one time the Great Lakes were covered by a glacier—it receded towards Canada and left depressions filled with water.

Syracuse Recruiting Roundup: Phil Picciotti, Michael Van Buren - The Juice Online (the juice; Auger)
Spring recruiting is now in full swing, and there’s plenty to cover in this week’s Syracuse recruiting roundup.
In April, I wrote about how SU has refocused its recruiting, pivoting toward its backyard in New Jersey. The Orange coaches were on the recruiting trail this past week, with a particular emphasis on the Garden State again. Syracuse handed out over 20 offers, some of which are highlighted below.
Of particular note, Syracuse offered five players from New Jersey in the 2024 and 2025 class. They also stuck to the more traditional recruiting areas, with a large group of offers going to the DMV, Pennsylvania and Florida areas.

Syracuse Makes Impression on 2024 ATH Travon Dye (SI; McAllister)
Class of 2024 Wayne (NJ) Passaic County Tech athlete Travon Dye visited Syracuse football recently with his brother Trashon Dye to get a closer look at the program. The intriguing prospect can play multiple positions at the next level.
"It was awesome," Dye said. "We toured almost the entire campus, learned about the rich history of Syracuse football and all about the number 44. We took a photo shoot and met with some great coaches who made us feel extremely welcomed. We ended up on a FaceTime call with coach Monroe, aka Swag Daddy, and he couldn't wait to meet us in person. The best part I would say would have been how welcomed and at home I felt the coaches and a few players were extremely uplifting.
"The energy was great. It was great hearing they liked our film and that we're very explosive athletes. They even stayed for a little portion of the photo shoot. Overall it was a great experience and the school and everyone there was amazing."
Dye also spent time with members of the Orange staff.
"Coach Wittke, who was also impressed by how explosive we were and impressed with my shot put measurements for track and field," Dye said. "Coach Maddox was also very impressed with our film and felt the Jersey energy we brought with us. And of course coach Khalil Ahmad, who made the visit feel at home and detailed everything about what Syracuse football is."

Syracuse football coaches have thrown a scholarship offer out to an elite quarterback in the 2024 recruiting cycle.
Michael Van Buren, one of the top signal-callers in the sophomore class who plays in Baltimore, recently said via Twitter that he has received an offer from the Orange coaching staff.
Van Buren, listed at 6-foot and 180 pounds on the 247Sports Web site, is a sophomore at the Saint Frances Academy in Baltimore.
Not all of the primary recruiting services have unveiled national rankings for the 2024 class, but for those that have, Van Buren looks to be a consensus four-star prospect in this cycle.
Syracuse football will face tremendous competition for stellar QB Michael Van Buren.
While his recruiting process likely has a way to go, Van Buren has already fielded around 15 offers from a range of high-major programs, according to his bio on the 247Sports Web site, and the On3 Web site.
Multiple Atlantic Coast Conference squads have offered him, including Virginia Tech, Boston College, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech and Louisville.
Looking beyond the ACC, there are some heavyweights in college football that have pledged an offer to Van Buren, including Alabama, Michigan and Penn State, along with other teams such as Ole Miss, Rutgers, West Virginia, Maryland, Arizona and Memphis.
The industry-generated 247Sports Composite, 247Sports and all rates Van Buren as four stars. On a national scale in his class, the 247Sports Composite places him at No. 126, followed by 247Sports at No. 139 and at No. 149.
At the quarterback position within the 2024 cycle, Van Buren is No. 10 across the country per the 247Sports Composite, No. 11 via 247Sports, and No. 11 according to .

Former Syracuse DL McKinley Williams, Kingsley Jonathan, Josh Black receive NFL opportunities (247sports.com; Bailey)
Three former Syracuse football defensive linemen have secured NFL opportunities after going unselected in the 2022 draft this weekend, the program announced on social media. McKinley Williams and Kingsley Jonathan signed free agent contracts with the Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills, respectively, while Josh Black has accepted a rookie minicamp invitation with the Chicago Bears. This was the first year since 2017 that the Orange didn't have a player drafted.
The 6-foot-4, 285-pound Williams appeared in 61 games over six seasons with SU, starting 34 contests and tacking up 122 tackles, including 21 for loss, to go with four sacks. A Miramar, Fla., native, 'Bear' served as the team's primary defensive tackle at the head of Tony White's 3-3-5 front each of the last two campaigns. Now he joins former SU captain Zaire Franklin in Indianapolis.
The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Jonathan was also a longtime contributor in the trenches for Syracuse, racking up 101 tackles, including 21.5 for loss, 15 sacks and three forced fumbles in 56 appearances. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Jonathan came to Central New York from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore.

Syracuse University to rename the Carrier Dome - what name would fans choose? (cnycentral.com; Wight)
Syracuse University announced that starting May 1, the university has the option to change the name of the Carrier Dome after 42 years. If it were up to fans to decide, there's a whole host of new options to choose from, but experts say given the millions of dollars involved in naming rights deals, it would be surprising if JMA Wireless isn't incorporated into the stadium name.
"I think brands look for the naming rights for a number of different reasons," said Syracuse University Advertising Professor Beth Egan, "You're trying to reach as many people as 'we' can with 'our' message, getting your name on a stadium, on a ballpark, that's an opportunity for the name to be repeated time and time again across a lot of different media."
This comes after sports publication "Sportico" reported the news on April 15, suggesting the stadium will be renamed after JMA Wireless, a tech manufacturing company that is building a large campus in Syracuse.
Carrier previously held the naming rights for 42 years - paying $2.5 million in an agreement with the university in 1979, one of the first of its kind.
Syracuse University has spent years trying to renegotiate the "in perpetuity" part of the deal, which in legal terms means "forever." While the naming deal was unique at the time, they are commonplace now, and can cost tens of millions of dollars.
SU and Carrier now have a settlement over the naming rights, and the Carrier name will be dropped and replaced with JMA Wireless, according to reporting from Eben Nov-Williams at Sportico, which has not been confirmed by SU.
After 42 years - Professor Egan said it will be difficult for JMA Wireless to get people to use their name when referring to the iconic stadium.
"People are still going to call it the Carrier Dome," said Professor Egan, "you can force your name into the local dialogue but ultimately people have to adopt it and be willing to call it 'JMA Wireless Dome."
Syracuse University has not commented on what the new name will be - so we took the question to fans following the lacrosse game Sunday.
Some said they don't need anything fancy - just "the dome" will work.

If you told Louisville fans in 2019 that Scott Satterfield would emerge from the first three years of the post-Bobby Petrino era with an 18-19 overall record, there would probably be a great deal of understanding.
That’s how bad the situation had gotten by the end of 2018, with the Cardinals finishing 2-10, going winless in ACC play, getting outscored by 292 points on the season and watching 22 players who had eligibility remaining leave the program at year’s end.
If that weren’t enough, hometown hero Jeff Brohm opted to stay at Purdue rather than come to rescue his alma mater.
Then Satterfield emerged after a standout run at Appalachian State, and he quickly made everyone forget about the past, going 8-5 with a limited roster, winning the Music City Bowl and, intentionally or not, elevating expectations for the future.
Against that backdrop, a 6-7 campaign in 2021 — which followed a 4-7 showing in 2020, along with a brief flirtation with South Carolina at the end of that season — was disappointing.
So what now?
It’s not that there isn’t reason for excitement. Much of the fan base’s frustration with last season stems from how maddeningly inconsistent the team could be. Quarterback Malik Cunningham looked as good as any player in the country at times, posting historic numbers during a two-game, five-day November stretch in which the Cards scored 103 points. An early-season win over UCF looked to be a sign of big things to come, too.
But too often, Louisville was on the wrong end of close calls: a three-point loss to ACC Atlantic champion Wake Forest, a one-point home loss to Virginia, losing to Clemson on a goal-line stand, losing to Air Force by three points in the bowl game.
Then there’s Kentucky, the archrival that is now 2-0 against Satterfield, outscoring his Cards by a total of 97-34.
Cunningham returns for his fourth season as the starter. Tons of familiar faces are back around him as well. If the quarterback can be consistent throughout the season and the defense can take a big step forward, there’s no sense in putting a limit on what this program can do, especially in an ACC that will likely be more open than ever.
Satterfield, a former quarterback himself, recognizes this with the offense.
“You can just get this kind of quiet confidence with those guys,” he said. “They know they’ve got a chance to be really good. And they go out and just prove it. They proved it every day in the spring. I think you want to embrace that. You also know you’ve got to work your tails offs. They understand that as well. But it’s exciting to know this could be one of the better offenses I’ve been a part of in my career just overall. There’s really not many weaknesses at all.”

Virginia Tech football: 2 Hokies enter the NCAA transfer portal (gobblercountry.com; Manning)
Virginia Tech’s quest to reach the 85 scholarship limit improved Friday when two more players entered the NCAA transfer portal.
Freshman offensive lineman Bryce Goodner announced that he was entering the transfer portal on Twitter. Goodner was a three-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class from McMinn High School in Athens, Tennessee.
Goodner did not play as a freshman in 2021 and had recently spent time working on the defensive line. Considering the offensive line’s lack of depth, it wasn’t a good sign new offensive line coach Joe Rudolph allowed Goodner to work with the defensive line.
Before Goodner entered the portal, redshirt freshman running Jalen Hampton entered the transfer portal. Hampton, from Rockville, Maryland, was a three-star running back in VT’s 2020 recruiting class — which was one of the worst among Power 5 teams.
This offseason, Hampton, along with Tahj Gary, Jordan Brunson and Marco Lee as running backs leaving Blacksburg. Now, the Hokies have a more manageable six scholarship runners on the roster.
It was a busy week for the Hokies in the transfer portal. However, it was needed as Tech looked to clear space from some of Justin Fuente’s subpar recruiting classes. Goodner and Hampton should each have four years of eligibility remaining at their new school.

Every ACC Player Selected in the 2022 NFL Draft - Sports Illustrated Virginia Cavaliers News, Analysis and More (SI; Newton)
21 players from the Atlantic Coast Conference were selected in the 2022 NFL Draft this weekend, including four first round draft picks, led by NC State offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu, the No. 6 overall pick selected by the Carolina Panthers. The ACC also had the top quarterback picked in the draft, as Kenny Pickett remained in Pittsburgh, selected with the 20th overall pick by the Steelers.
Virginia Tech and North Carolina led the conference with four draft picks each. Clemson, NC State, Pittsburgh, and Wake Forest each had two players drafted and Boston College, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami, and Virginia each had one draft pick.

Sci Fi: DC + Marvel Movies 2022-23
DC and Marvel are the comic versions of the ACC and the SEC. DC was successful back in the 80's and 90's, Marvel dominated the early part of the 21st century, but now DC is making a comeback.
This year and next, both organizations have a number of movies scheduled for release. When you look at the schedules below, you get the sense each is trying to get the upper hand - their competitiveness really comes out! I'll let you be the judge who has the better slate of movies planned...

Golden Snowball: Where does Syracuse stand among the Upstate cities for the most snow? (PS; Dellinger)
A recent Nor’easter recently dumped heavy snow in some areas of Central New York, but mostly missed Syracuse – which experienced a little snow and a lot of rain.
So where does Syracuse rank among the snowiest Upstate cities? Fourth out of five cities.
Syracuse had 76 inches of snow to date according to the annual Golden Snowball competiton. Average snowfall by this time is usually 127.3 inches, 51.3 inches below the average.
Last year Syracuse ended in third place in the annual contest.
Syracuse is currently in sixth place in the annual Golden Snow Globe (25 snowiest U.S. cities) competition.
Unless there is a surprise snowstorm on Mother’s Day, better luck next year.
