This week, we’re previewing Syracuse’s matchup with Clemson on Oct. 22 with their major storylines. 2021 was a strange year for the Clemson Tigers football program. A 10-3 overall record and a 20-13 win over Iowa State in the Cheez-It Bowl would be considered a great year for the majority of programs in college football. Yet for a school that has played in four national championship games in the last seven years, bowl game victories doesn’t cut it. The Clemson offense fell off a cliff last year, landing at the 82nd ranked scoring offense with 26.3 ppg. That was dismal when compared to their performance in 2020 when they scored 43.5 ppg, good for third in the country. Ultimately, injuries to receivers and the offensive line paired with the departure of an All-American quarterback proved to be too much for the Tigers to overcome. Luckily, the offense didn’t need to be great. [B]DEATH, TAXES AND THE CLEMSON DEFENSE[/B] The defense made up for everything. Ranked second in the country only to the national champion Georgia Bulldogs, their defense gave up a mere 15 ppg and allowed their offense to do just enough to win. Going back to 2017, the Tigers defense has been top two in the country in points per game every year except one- 2020, when they finished 18th. That was the most Covid-affected year however, and if you disregard the teams that didn’t play at least 10 games, Clemson finished ninth in the country with 20.2 ppg. Losing defensive coordinator Brent Venables, who took a head coaching job at Oklahoma, will certainly be tough to overcome. This roster is deep and talented though, and new DC Wes Goodwin is an in-house hire that’s worked closely with Venables for the last four years as a scouting and defensive breakdown assistant. The transition there should be hardly discernible. Clemson is filled with talent along the defensive line, but of more importance might be in the secondary where there’s definitely a large hole to fill with Andrew Booth, Jr being drafted by the Buffalo Bills at the top of the second round (#42 overall) and Mario Goodrich getting nabbed by the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent. A 3-3-5 model that gives each team three opponents to play every year and five rotating opponents was the most popular option at the conference's spring meetings last week, and ever since, speculation about who will draw who has run wild. ESPN ACC insider Andrea Adelson gave her predictions about who the Pittsburgh Panthers will play in their annual conference matchups. Adelson said she thinks Pitt will draw Miami, Syracuse and Boston College as their three permanent opponents. For other teams in the conference, Adelson found it easier to assign them natural rivals. But the Panthers are a special case. As a member of the conference's northern contingent, they do not have the proximity or historical ties that other ACC schools have to one another. I don’t see why Virginia would be in favor of that model either. Think about it. In 2019, when UVA finally won the Coastal Division and played powerhouse Clemson in the ACC Championship game, everyone pretty much knew the Cavaliers would lose that contest, but still get a bid to the Orange Bowl because Clemson was in the College Football Playoffs. That meant UVA had to finish best out of its other six Coastal Division opponents for the great opportunity. Virginia had the same opportunity a few times over the years since the conference went to divisional play in 2005, but never could beat Virginia Tech in regular-season-ending showdowns. If the ACC votes to eliminate divisional play, the top two teams in the 14-team race will play for the championship. All of a sudden, Virginia, or any other team in the league, has to worry about finishing ahead of 12 other teams instead of six, thus making Tony Elliott’s challenge twice as hard. Why would UVA vote for that? Don’t @ me about the new model allowing players to compete in games against other ACC schools more often. I don’t think any Cavalier player would feel his career was incomplete because he didn’t get to play Boston College or Syracuse. Yeah, it would be nice, but … Oh, and just glancing back at the ACC Championship Game since ‘05, only three times have the participants won fewer than nine games. In fact, a runner-up in the other division won more games than those three that failed to win nine. So it appears that in order to make it to the ACC Championship, a team must win at least nine games in most cases. History tells us that has been a problem for Virginia, which has won nine games or more only eight times (three of those times, the ninth win actually came in a bowl game), doesn’t have a track record of producing teams that would qualify for an ACC Championship appearance in a free-for-all, 14-team scramble. Chris Slade, who played on Virginia’s only 10-win team in 1989, couldn’t believe that was the program’s only squad to hit double figure wins. That was more than 30 years ago.
