Welcome to National Coffee Day!

National Coffee Day celebrates coffee, the drink made from the roasted and ground beans of the coffee plant. Coffee beans originated in Ethiopia, and arabica beans are the main species, which now are grown throughout the "coffee belt", an area between the latitudes of 25 degrees North and 30 degrees South. Seventy-five percent of the world's coffee bean production is arabica. Most of the other coffee beans are robusta beans, or "Congo coffee" beans, which are more robust.

There are different legends as to how and when the drink was first brewed. One story claims that a 6th century goatherd from Kaffa named Kaldi saw that his goats were more lively after eating coffee beans. A monk named Mullah apparently noticed this and brewed the beverage and spread word of it around the region. Another story from the 15th century claims that a 9th century mufti—a Muslim legal expert—of Aden was the first to make the drink, and it became popular in Middle Eastern courts afterwards.

Beat writers predict blowout win over Wagner (DO; Staff)

Syracuse is coming off a second straight last-minute win and now turns its sights to Wagner with a 4-0 record. The Football Championship Series squad comes to the JMA Wireless Dome for the first time since 2019, and has yet to win a game since that season. Head coach Dino Babers said on Monday that he’s making sure his team doesn’t look past the Seahawks, continually referencing his 21-point upset of San Diego St. when he was in charge of Eastern Illinois.

The Orange can finish Saturday afternoon’s game one win away from bowl eligibility. They square off against a team that got blown out by Rutgers and lost two games to fellow FCS opponents, one of which was in their Northeast Conference. Ahead of SU’s third straight home game, take a look at what our beat writers see as the outcome of the matchup:

Alex Cirino (3-1)
Too much momentum
Syracuse 48, Wagner 9

This is Syracuse’s final tune-up before a stretch that features five ranked opponents. A mistake-free passing game, limiting penalties and showcasing the Orange’s depth will leave a ton of promise ahead of an ACC-heavy schedule. Starting the season 5-0 never seemed like a possibility for SU, but playing against an 0-3 Football Championship Subdivision team makes that fifth win likely.

But if Syracuse doesn’t execute like it should, many questions will rise about how many more wins it will tack on afterward. Yes, it will have its bye week to reinforce things. But as the season progresses, SU will only play three more times at home, and will be given its first big tests of the season. So to avoid any concern, going all out against Wagner will be the key. Much like against UConn, the Orange will run up the score early and go from there, continuing its undefeated run.

Connor Smith (3-1)
Tune-up time
Syracuse 56, Wagner 6

Syracuse is rolling, ranked in the coaches poll for the first time since 2018 and in line for its first 5-0 start since 1987. Wagner, on the other hand, is not. The Seahawks have won one total game over the past three-plus seasons, which came in 2019 when they beat Long Island University 24-14. Wagner went 0-11 last season, losing its two games against FBS competition 41-7 to Temple and 69-7 to Buffalo. Rutgers put up 66 points on the Seahawks in a blowout win three weeks ago.

So this game shouldn’t be close. If it is, it’ll be a cause for concern for the Orange heading into their bye week. They have a difficult slate after the bye, with games against No. 10 NC State, No. 5 Clemson, No. 22 Wake Forest, No. 24 Pittsburgh and a talented Notre Dame squad. This game should be treated as a chance to clean up some of the offense’s struggles from the second half of the Virginia contest and to test out depth, especially with SU having now lost four starters to season-ending injuries. When the week has come and gone, Syracuse should be securely ranked in both top-25 polls and have a boost of confidence heading into a big-time matchup with the Wolfpack.

ORANGE ZONE: Syracuse vs. Wagner (youtube; video; Orange Zone)

Another last-second win has Syracuse at 4-0 for the first time since 2018 heading into what looks like their easiest game of the season against FCS foe Wagner. But Dino Babers' team isn't overlooking the Seahawks. Samantha Croston and Tommy Sladek discuss if this game is a trap game and what it will take to finally earn a spot in the AP Top 25. The last time Syracuse played Wagner, Dino Babers called it "the most complete game" since he arrived as head coach. This Saturday, the Orange hope to improve to 5-0

Opponent preview: Everything to know about Wagner (DO; Smith)

After pulling out a victory in the final minute for the second straight week, Syracuse faces Wagner on Saturday in game three of its four-game homestand. The Orange are 4-0 for the first time since 2018, and a win this weekend would make them 5-0 for the first time since 1987, giving head coach Dino Babers his best record through five games as a head coach.

Wagner is SU’s annual Football Championship Series opponent, sitting at 0-3 on the season after a 20-point loss to Saint Francis last weekend. The Seahawks traveled to Rutgers three weeks ago and lost 66-7. Head coach Tom Massella has yet to win a game in his two-plus seasons as head coach, and Wagner hasn’t won since beating Long Island University in September 2019. Saturday’s game should be nothing more than a tune-up for the Orange, now ranked No. 25 in the coaches poll and seemingly on a roll heading into the final seven games of the season.

Here’s everything to know about the Seahawks ahead of Saturday’s contest:

All-time series
Syracuse leads, 2-0.

Last time they played

Wagner last traveled to central New York in September 2018, when Syracuse picked up an easy 62-10 win. It came a week after SU pulled out a 13-point win at Western Michigan to open the season 4-0. The Orange ultimately finished 10-3 and ranked No. 15 in the final AP Poll, their best season in 17 years.

Quarterback Eric Dungey tied a school record with five touchdown passes despite not playing in the fourth quarter with the game already out of hand. Dungey completed 23-of-32 passes for 218 yards, and five different receivers pulled in touchdown tosses from him. Running back Dontae Strickland added two rushing touchdowns and SU tied a school record with 45 first-half points. Andre Cisco also picked off two passes in the first quarter.

Wagner got off to a tough start, with Luke Massei throwing an interception on the third snap of the game and Dungey finding Sean Riley for a 16-yard touchdown seven plays later. Cisco picked off another pass on the next Wagner drive. Strickland’s touchdown put Syracuse up 14-0 after the extra point just over five minutes into the game. Babers called it the Orange’s “most complete game” since he arrived as head coach two years prior.

Meet the Enemy: Wagner’s Facts and Players to Know – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Griffin)

1987. That’s the last time Syracuse Football started a season with five straight wins. Following SU’s triumph over Virginia, the Orange are one win away from that mark, and there may be magic in the air. To match its total from a season ago, Syracuse will have to take down Wagner. The Seahawks as a program are, well… let’s call it not pretty.

SEASON AND PROGRAM OVERVIEW

It has been nothing short of a struggle for Wagner on the gridiron as of late. The last time the Seahawks won a game was three years ago today (September 28, 2019). Yikes. This season hasn’t helped the cause. Wagner has lost all three of its contests, highlighted by a 66-7 drubbing at the hands of Rutgers. At least the Seahawks were somewhat competitive in the other two games? They lost them by an average of 18.5 points. Fans on Staten Island haven’t been treated to a winning season since 2016. Unless things change drastically, it may stay that way for some time.

HEAD COACH TOM MASELLA

As one could predict by what’s written above, Masella’s tenure as head coach has been adventurous. A former Seahawk himself in the late ’70s and early ’80s, Masella was hired after the 2019 season concluded. He’s winless thus far. That being said, he does bring a solid track record to the table. While coaching at Fordham, Masella led the Rams to the A-10 title in 2007 and was an assistant on Wagner’s NEC title team in 2012. But the success as head coach at his alma mater has been tough to find.

QB NICK KARGMAN

Kargman took over the starting job this season after seeing minimal action over the past few years. The Western Michigan transfer spent three seasons in Kalamazoo, throwing a grand total of three passes. One for every season. Kargman has had plenty of playing time with the Seahawks, albeit it has been tough for him. Try a completion percentage of well under 50%, barely 150 passing yards per game, and the same number of TDs as INTs as proof. If Wagner is to break its long losing skid, Kargman has to elevate his game.

WR NAIEM SIMMONS

If there is one bright spot to look at when assessing this Wagner team, it’s Simmons. The Cherry Hill, NJ native led the team in receptions and receiving yards a year ago and has kicked it up a notch this year. Simmons has over half of the team’s receiving yards, in large part thanks to a 162-yard effort in the opener. Add that to the fact that he’s caught 2 of Kargman’s 4 touchdowns, “favorite target” might be an understatement. Syracuse’s secondary was solid in containing Virginia wideouts Keytaon Thompson and Dontayvion Wicks, and it’ll have to keep an eye on Simmons this weekend.

The old Szmyt is back. What has he, and his team, done to get him back on track? (PS; $; Leiker)

Gary Zauner believes there’s a simple formula to any kicker’s success.

Great snapper. Great holder. Great protection.

It’s probably why Andre Szmyt, who has trained with Zauner since high school, was quick to deflect praise from himself after making all five field-goal attempts in Syracuse’s 22-20 win over Virginia last Friday.

Szmyt easily cleared distances of 26, 32, 28, 40 and 31 yards, setting a new career high for most field goals made in a game and tying the Syracuse football record.

After a 2021 season that left many scratching their heads, the 2018 Lou Groza Award winner seems back on track in his final season with the Orange. Szmyt has already made as many field goals through four games (nine) as he did all of last season and has only missed one attempt so far.

“He went back to his old way and lo and behold, we got old Andre back,” SU coach Dino Babers said Monday.

But what is “the old way” for Szmyt?

It has just as much to do with who’s around him as it does his own process.

The obvious place to look at is the coaching staff. With the hiring of Bob Ligashesky last spring, Syracuse is back to having a full-time special teams coordinator.

Justin Lustig was both the special teams coordinator and outside receivers coach during Szmyt’s 2018 record-setting season. Lustig coached at Syracuse for four seasons but always had to pull double-duty coaching multiple units. Lustig departed SU for a similar role at Vanderbilt in December 2020.

The Orange was without a special teams coordinator in 2021, and it showed.

‎Locked On Syracuse - Daily Podcast On Syracuse Orange Football & Basketball: Is This Syracuse Football Season Already A Success? on Apple Podcasts (apple.com; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

After a 4-0 start to the season and an upcoming gimme game against Wagner, hosts Matt Bonaparte and Owen Valentine explore the thought that this Syracuse Football season could already be a success. But with the perfect start, does the definition of success change moving forward?

By the numbers: Fan attendance at the JMA Wireless Dome (cnycentral.com; Hodges)

The JMA Wireless Dome. The Dome. The Loud House.

Whatever you call it, the home of the Syracuse Orange has a reputation worthy of one of the best home field advantages in the nation.

That is, when it's filled to capacity.

Now don't get me wrong, even when it isn't jam packed the Dome is an extremely hard place to play. The jeers of screaming fans echo every which way making communication almost impossible for opposing offenses, and when the Orange make a big play it gets even louder. We've seen that on display each week the Orange have been at home, especially over the past two weeks of this four-week (five if you include the upcoming bye) stay at home.

That doesn't mean we can't ask why the Dome doesn't fill up. Then again it doesn't mean there's a concrete answer.

So let's forget the question as to why the Dome doesn't fill up all the way. Instead let's look at where it is compared to the last time Syracuse saw a team go 4-0. Let's look back at 2018.

Babers talks Garoppolo and FCS players becoming NFL talent (PS; Leiker)

Dino Babers shouted out one of his former quarterbacks during an appearance on ESPN’s “Always College Football” show with Greg McElroy this week.

The Syracuse football coach said he watched Jimmy Garoppolo, who played for Babers at Eastern Illinois from 2012-13, during the San Francisco 49ers’ game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Babers was making a point about how the NFL finds plenty of talent at FCS schools as SU prepares to face Wagner this Saturday. He said when he arrived at Eastern Illinois, the program “didn’t know what they had,” and he thought Garoppolo should be playing for a Power Five team.

“NFL, they’ll find you anywhere,” Babers said. “There’s players everywhere, and the one thing about the National Football League is that they have enough money to find ‘em.”

Sean Tucker has the attention of a former first-round draft pick

One of Babers’ former running backs from when he coached at the University of Arizona has had his eye on Sean Tucker.

Trung Canidate, who played at Arizona from 1996-99, was a first-round draft pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, going No. 31 overall to the St. Louis Rams. Babers said Canidate texts him about Tucker’s performance and how Syracuse is using the running back after every game it plays.

Syracuse vs Wagner Game Preview

Why Wagner Will Win

The Seahawks might be having their share of issues, but they’re not screwing up.

Penalties aren’t an issue over the first three games, there hasn’t been a lost fumble, and the four interceptions are mostly because the offense has to keep throwing to try getting back in games.

Syracuse turned the ball over four times in the close win over Virginia, penalties have been a huge issue, and …

Why Syracuse Will Win

Syracuse should be able to put this away fast.

Wagner has defensive problems on third down, the offense doesn’t do much of anything right, and scoring has been like pulling teeth with just seven points in each of the last two games and just ten points in the second half so far this year.

Syracuse will use this to tune up with a BRUTAL slate coming up next – NC State, at Clemson, Notre Dame at Pitt, Florida State, at Wake Forest …

What’s Going To Happen

Get going, get the win, get the stars on the sidelines as soon as humanly possible.

The Orange won’t have to work too hard to get to 5-0, but they won’t do anything special after the first few drives.

The Seahawks will struggle to score against the Syracuse twos and threes – Rutgers beat them 66-7 a few weeks ago – and there won’t be any drama.

There are two weeks off before the ACC season kicks back in, so the Orange coaching staff will keep the main guys in for a half and coast from there.

Orange Watch: Eliminate FCS opponents from the Syracuse football schedule - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: As No. 25 Syracuse (4-0) gets set to host FCS member Wagner (0-3) Saturday afternoon in the Dome (5:00 p.m. ET / ACCNX or ESPN+), it’s worth noting that SU is 16-0 all-time in meetings against either NCAA IA or FCS classification foes, in what’s known as a “buy game” or “guarantee game.” The purpose of scheduling these games is simple; the mutual benefit of the won/loss record for Syracuse and the financial windfall for the opposition.

The NCAA split Division I football programs in 1978, initialing creating the I and IA classifications, before renaming them in 2006 as the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) and FCS (Football Championship Subdivision). For Syracuse in games versus IA or FCS opponents there’s only been two close calls.

The first nail-biter was in 2011, a 21-14 win over Rhode Island not decided until a fourth quarter SU touchdown and the ‘Cuse defense causing a turnover on the final URI drive.

The other game was the 2014 season opener against Villanova. The 27-26 double overtime victory was aided by ‘Nova missing a straight on, 25-yard field with 0:12 left in regulation, an Orange fake field goal turned touchdown pass in the second overtime, then the ‘Cuse defense subsequently smothering the Wildcats potential game-winning two-point conversion run to end matters.

While wins in games versus FCS opponents help towards bowl eligibility, the downside is they are rarely competitive and for the most part do not draw large crowds. The composite score in Syracuse’s 16 games against subdivision teams is 45-13, and the average announced attendance for those matchups is 36,139.

That brings us to Saturday’s game against Wagner, which has the unhallowed distinction of having dropped 23 straight games dating back to 2019, the longest current losing streak in all of Division I.

Syracuse announced the Wagner contest on June 24, 2020 during the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic, and there’s no doubt the guarantee was in the range of $400,000. Last season, as reported by Syracuse.com, Syracuse paid Albany $360,000 for its 62-24 victory, and SU paid Central Connecticut State $390,000 in 2017, a 50-7 final score.

Wagner has already played one Power Five road contest this season to add to its athletic department coffers, falling at Rutgers 66-7 on September 10, and it was an expensive victory according to NJ.com which reviewed the game contract.

Rutgers paid Wagner a $425,000 appearance guarantee, plus travel expenses for the round-trip bus ride from Staten Island to Piscataway, N.J. including 50 hotel rooms for the traveling party, along with 400 complimentary tickets and the use of one suite at SHI Stadium.

Moving forward as conferences, including the ACC, renegotiate TV contracts, there will likely be a push for additional league games during the regular season, and out-of-conference games limited to FBS members, preferably with one game against another Power 5 team.

Syracuse already has future scheduled games with FCS members Colgate next season, New Hampshire in 2026, and Morgan State in 2029, so it will be interesting to see if all of those games come to fruition.

With ESPN’s Matchup Predictor saying Syracuse is 99.8% certain to defeat Wagner, it provides an interesting scenario for Dino Babers to keep his players mentally strong.

“We need to focus on Wagner, and then we need to focus on ourselves,” Babers said Monday at his weekly press conference about the last game before the Saturday off date on October 8.

“We need to continue that because we will not get another break. The NCAA limits the amount of time we’re allowed to have with them (the players), and we’ve got to make sure we use every amount of that time to the best of our ability on (our weaknesses), or (areas) we want to get stronger.”

Third-and-How? ACC top teams up their third-down success (AP Iacobelli)

Few things cause more anxiety in football than third down. Convert, and your offense gains momentum. Fail, and it's a stressful wait until you get the ball again.

So far, the top teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference, including its four undefeateds in No. 5 Clemson, No. 10 North Carolina State, No. 23 Florida State and Syracuse, have taken that worry out of their attack with improved third-down success.

The Tigers lead the league in converting 55% of their third-down situations on offense (35 of 64) while North Carolina State is next at 52%. The Seminoles which barely made a third of all their third downs last season, are at 51%

Still, as North Carolina offensive coordinator Phil Longo says, the best way to be good at third downs is to avoid them.

“The best third-down teams in the country are the ones that get in it the fewest,” said Longo, whose unit is second in the ACC and ninth nationally at 52.8%

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney saw his team's third-down conversions plummet in 2021, part of the offensive woes that ended their six-year run of ACC titles and College Football Playoff appearances.

Syracuse Football: Dino Babers details why Wagner is ‘tricky game’ for SU (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers continues to stress to his team, and the larger Orange community, that the ‘Cuse needs to take things one game at a time, and one week at a time.

It’s a philosophy that I respect, even as the Orange fan base is jazzed up over the squad’s first 4-0 start to a season dating back to 2018, when the ‘Cuse went 10-3 overall, won a bowl game, and finished ranked No. 15 in both major polls.

By extension, when the most recent iterations of the two major top-25 polls were disclosed on Sunday, Syracuse football found itself at No. 25 in the Coaches poll. That marked the first time the Orange is nationally ranked since 2019.

With FCS team Wagner (0-3) coming to the Hill this Saturday, for a non-conference clash on SU’s homecoming day that will commence at 5 pm from the JMA Wireless Dome, it’s highly likely that the ‘Cuse will move to 5-0 for the inaugural occasion dating back to 1987, when Syracuse football had a truly magical campaign.

Syracuse Football: Top 3 Orange players to watch against Wagner (itlh; Nutting)

Syracuse football (4-0, 2-0 in the ACC) is back at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday, as they take on the Wagner Seahawks (0-3, 0-1 in the NEC) at 5 pm eastern time.

The Orange is seeking its fifth straight win, coming off a thriller against the Virginia Cavaliers at the Dome on Friday. Here are the top three players to watch for Syracuse football in the game against Wagner.

This trio of Syracuse football players is key to the Orange taking down Wagner.

Quarterback Garrett Shrader #6

Garrett Shrader has been one of the main reasons that the Syracuse Orange have been undefeated so far this season. Shrader went 22 of 33 for 277 yards and one interception against the Virginia Cavaliers, as he will look to get back on track by surveying the field, finding the open man, and making plays throwing the ball and thinking with his feet.

Garrett Shrader will have to be ready to not only throw the ball, but also be ready to run with the ball as well, as he had 14 carries for 11 yards and one touchdown run against Virginia. He is a dual-threat quarterback, who when he has the room, is not afraid to run for the end zone himself, as he and Sean Tucker will be keys to the Syracuse offense in this game.

Syracuse’s Hopes for College Gameday are Now Gone – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefzz.net; Amendolara)

The exhilarating start to the season has stirred dreams of ESPN’s College Gameday making its first ever appearance at Syracuse. The Orange have come close to hosting of the sport’s most visible and popular show, but it’s never quite come to fruition. The 4-0 record combined with a gimme win over Wagner this weekend will mean a ranked SU squad looking at two tasty matchups against elite conference foes coming up. Could this be the year, finally?

Nope.

This week ESPN decided to head to South Carolina for a top-10 matchup. The #10 NC State at #5 Clemson game kills the two shots SU realistically had of being part of Gameday. Coming into the season, the Wolfpack were predicted to be the greatest ACC threat to Clemson superiority (even though Pitt won the league last year). And so far NC State has delivered on that promise with an undefeated record and a #10 ranking. So ESPN execs are validated for making this game – at Clemson – the site of Gameday.

But that means SU is out of luck, because ESPN won’t make an ACC game, and specifically one featuring NC State or Clemson, the nationally spotlighted game again so soon. The Orange will likely be 5-0 hosting NC State on October 15, and the Pack could also be undefeated with a win over Clemson. But NC State going on the road in conference two weeks later would feel too similar for the Gameday matchup.

This also takes SU out of the mix for the Clemson game the following week on October 22. If the two squads are meeting up and both are undefeated, it would get a premier time slot, probably 7p on ESPN. But again, ESPN isn’t going to travel to Clemson twice in three weeks.

Syracuse Football: UVA review, Wagner preview & meeting Coach Babers (itlh; Fiello)

Hello Orange Nation – the sky is blue, Syracuse football is undefeated and I got to meet Head Coach Dino Babers in person…life is beautiful sometimes.

Syracuse football is 4-0 and undefeated in September. I love hearing that even the most optimistic of fans probably didn’t see this coming. Well, except I kind of did…here on Inside The Loud House…in July.

Also, I’m on cloud 9 as I randomly ran into Coach Babers and I felt like a kid who just saw Santa Claus for the first time. Thank you coach for humoring me and being as friendly as possible to a long-time fan like myself.

I met THE man! Thank you @CoachBabersCuse for taking a minute for a lunatic yelling hello and asking for a pic. Forget day made…life made! Sorry to my wife but this is the best day! He knew who I was! Keep doing what you’re doing and Go Orange! pic.twitter.com/SaMWzykGu0
— Chuck (@OrangeChuck) September 25, 2022

And now for the portion of this post where I discuss a few things about the Virginia win and talk about the upcoming game against Wagner.

Let’s look back and look ahead as Syracuse football gets ready for week five.

Virginia Review

Apparently, Syracuse winning isn’t good enough for some

So Syracuse football beat Virginia 22-20 but based on some reactions, you’d be hard-pressed to know that. I get that we all watch and view things differently but for me, I’m just happy my team won. I don’t need to over-analyze anything, panic or complain about what went wrong…I’m very happy and satisfied they won.

As a big-time fan of Hofmann’s sausage, I’ve never asked how it’s made…I’m just happy it turned out so delicious. Syracuse football is 4-0 folks, so just enjoy it and relax.

5 Things to Know: 'Cuse vs. Wagner - Syracuse University Athletics (cuse.com)

Syracuse hosts Wagner on Orange Central/Homecoming Weekend this week. Here are five things to know about the matchup.

1. Seeking Best Start in 35 Years
'Cuse has an opportunity to post its best start since 1987 on Saturday. A win would move 'Cuse to 5-0 for just the fourth time in the post-WWII era and first time since the unbeaten '87 squad.

Aside from the 11-0-1 1987 team, Syracuse only started 5-0 in 1959 when the Orange finished 11-0 and won the National Championship and 1960 , when the team finished 7-2, since WWII.

The only other times in school history that 'Cuse started 5-0 or better were: 1942, 1935, 1934, 1931, 1925, 1924, 1923 and 1902.

2. HOMECOMING HISTORY
Dating back to 1949, the Orange boast a 42-29 record in Orange Central/Homecoming games. This record excludes the 1979 season when Syracuse University did not sponsor a homecoming game due to construction of the Dome and 2020 when fans were not permitted due to the Pandemic.

Under Coach Babers, the Orange are 3-2 in homecoming games, with wins over Pittsburgh and Boston College, and losses to Clemson and USF.

3. AGAINST THE FCS
Syracuse is 19-0 vs. FCS foes (formerly Division I-AA) since the separation of the two divisions in 1978. The streak includes 18-straight wins at home.

Dino Babers is 24-5 in his career vs. FCS competition, with the streak including an 18-5 mark when he coached at Eastern Illinois, an FCS institution.

Hurricane Ian college football NC State Clemson :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; Murphy)

Hurricane Ian made landfall Wednesday morning on the west coast of Florida. It has forced changes to this weekend's college football schedule across the Southeast.

No moves have been made to ACC games that could be impacted by the storm. No. 10 NC State is scheduled to play at No. 5 Clemson on Saturday night, No. 22 Wake Forest visits No. 23 Florida State on Saturday afternoon and North Carolina hosts Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency Wednesday afternoon. In the order, Cooper says Ian "may result in extensive damage, including widespread power outages" in the state. North Carolinians can expect heavy rainfall and possible flooding and tornadoes on Friday and Saturday, the governor's office said.

No. 10 NC State at No. 10 Clemson (Saturday, 8 p.m.)

The Wolfpack are planning to charter to Greenville, South Carolina a few hours earlier on Friday, but otherwise remain on track to play one of the biggest games in school history. NC State will bus to Clemson on Saturday and plan to fly out of Greenville after the game.

Head coach Dave Doeren was part of the Wolfpack's memorable 10-3 home victory against Notre Dame in 2016 during torrential rain from the remnants of Hurricane Matthew.

"I hope we don't have to play in something like that Notre Dame game," Doeren said earlier this week. "That was nuts."

ESPN's College GameDay is scheduled to broadcast from Clemson in the morning, a huge national spotlight for both teams and the ACC.

A Clemson spokesman told WRAL on Wednesday afternoon that there have been no changes to the schedule.

Are We in the Endgame Now? (RX; HM)

Are We in the Endgame Now?

With the Big Ten sniffing the Pac-12 for more teams to add, are we close to a P4 end game?

Ultimately, it looks like it's only a matter of time before the Big Ten adds Cal, Oregon, Stanford, and Washington to get to 20 teams.
The Big XII would likely them add the "Corner Four" (Arizona, Arizona State, Utah and Colorado), but also losing a few Eastern teams (keep reading).
All of that might trigger the SEC to respond by adding Duke, North Carolina, Virginia, and Florida State from the ACC.*
Here's what we might end up with, according to CSNBBS moderator JRSEC:

The Big 12 becomes 16: Pay in the $40-$45 million range
West:
Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young, Colorado, Oregon State, San Diego State, Utah, Washington State
East: Baylor, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, T.C.U., Texas Tech

The ACC moves to 16 and adds: Central Florida, Cincinnati, Connecticut, South Florida, West Virginia, and Temple.

The new ACC: Pay in the $40-$45 million range.
North:
Boston College, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Temple, West Virginia
South: Central Florida, Clemson, Georgia, Miami, N.C. State, South Florida, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest

I think he forgot Georgia Tech, so pencil them in instead of UConn and move Virginia Tech to the North division, I guess? (not that there would be actual divisions, mind you). So more like this:

Chicken riggies at Attilio's Restaurant & Bar, Syracuse, NY (Jared Paventi | jaredpaventi@gmail.com)Jared Paventi | jaredpaventi@gma

Chicken riggies, service spot-on at Syracuse’s Attilio’s Restaurant & Bar (Dining Out Review) (PS; Paventi)

Here’s the thing about ordering chicken riggies at a restaurant: Most versions are not very good. The signature dish of nearby Utica is often duplicated for its seemingly easy use of ingredients, but the finished product is either too spicy or not spicy enough, and the chicken is either dry or bland.

And then there are The Original Chicken Riggies ($23) from Attilio’s Restaurant & Bar in Syracuse. The sauce has a base of chunky tomato, garlic, cherry peppers and onions, achieving just the right balance of vegetable to heat. The cherry peppers are subtle, coming in close to a medium-style chicken wing on the spice scale, but impart just enough vinegar to the sauce to differentiate themselves as their own individual flavor. It tasted as if it was made fresh for our order and wasn’t sitting on a prep line all day. (We have no idea if it was.)

The chicken’s texture told us it had been floured and pan-fried, but it absorbed the sauce’s flavor like it had stewed in it for hours. Together it was served over al dente rigatoni pasta and topped with parmesan cheese, creating one of the best presentations of the dish we have enjoyed locally in a long time.

NOTE: if the ACC wants a P4 (instead of a P3 where the ACC doesn't exist), they'd better be working on snatching up WVU, Cincinnati, and UCF now! (JMO - but no one in a position to do anything about it probably cares about my opinion)

GA to ACC, LOL
