Can SU hang on to its No. 2 recruit? (PS; $; Leiker) Vincent Carroll-Jackson sees his offer from Syracuse football as a blessing in disguise. The Class of 2023 offensive lineman, who committed on Dec. 11, told syracuse.com Friday that SU hadn’t been on his radar at all prior to him receiving his offer earlier this month. Despite Carroll-Jackson being from the neighboring state of Pennsylvania, it’s not unbelievable that was the case. After all, he didn’t start playing football until this year, when his teacher and coach Lance Deane convinced him to join the team at Central Dauphin East in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. With just one season of experience playing both the offensive and defensive line, Carroll-Jackson attracted offers ranging from regional schools like Rutgers, Buffalo, Connecticut and Pittsburgh to more traditional college powerhouses like Florida and Nebraska. Carroll-Jackson is expected to sign his letter of intent at 3 p.m. Wednesday, when the Orange will learn whether it can hang on to one of its top recruits. ... SU adds second linebacker to 2023 class with addition of JUCO product Lonnie Rice (PS; Leiker) Syracuse football’s 2023 recruiting class continues to expand with early signing day set for Wednesday. Linebacker Lonnie Rice announced his commitment to the Orange on Monday afternoon. He’s a 6-foot, 220-pound junior college prospect originally from Wyncote, Pennsylvania. Rice graduated from Bishop McDevitt High School in 2020 and was originally enrolled at Buffalo. He began at Lackawanna Community College in 2022, appearing in 10 games for the Falcons and recording 39 total tackles. Rice also had 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and two pass breakups. But there are plenty of recruiting battles the Orange will face, and here is a look at some of the major storylines heading into 2022 National Signing Day. 1. Will LaNorris Sellers sign with Syracuse or South Carolina? South Florence (SC) High quarterback LaNorris Sellers has been committed to Syracuse since March, and prior to that, committed to current Syracuse offensive coordinator Jason Beck when he was the quarterbacks coach at Virginia in 2021. That relationship is being tested now, with South Carolina making a major push for Sellers. The Gamecocks offered Sellers in October and have made signifiant process since then, so much so that Sellers will reveal his decision in a ceremony on Friday. Sellers is a four-star quarterback according to the 247 Composite, and the No. 395th overall recruit in the 2023 class. Retaining Sellers would be a huge boost for Beck, who was just promoted to OC following the departure of Robert Anae to NC State. 2. Will Vincent Carroll-Jackson flip to Nebraska? After Sellers, Syracuse’s highest rated commitment in 2023 is Central Daulpin (PA) East offensive lineman Vincent Carroll-Jackson. The No. 698th rated player in his class, Carroll-Jackson committed to the Orange on Dec. 11 over offers from Nebraska, Rutgers, Florida, Georgia and Pitt, among others. But Nebraska is making a big push to try to flip Carroll-Jackson, and he took an official visit over the weekend that appears to have changed his mind. This is another recruiting battle that will likely go down to the wire and Carroll-Jackson will announce his decision on Tuesday at 3 p.m. ... Syracuse football: Orange land three commitments as Early Signing Day approaches (TNIAAM; Wall) We are two days away from Early Signing Day and the Syracuse Orange just concluded a busy recruiting weekend. With the Orange making a last-minute push to round out the 2023 class, they did land a trio of commitments on Sunday. First Syracuse was able to flip the commitment of Ty Gordon, a defensive lineman from Virginia. Gordon had been committed to Old Dominion and he’s a 6’2 267 lb lineman who was unranked but was a second-team all-state player in Virginia. Next was Maryland DE/LB Oluwademilade Omopariola, who calls himself the “Nigerian Nightmare”. ... Syracuse football fills positions of need in transfer portal (237sports.com; Finneral) It has been a wild few weeks for the Syracuse football program. Between coaching changes, transfers and recruiting, the Orange will look very different in 2023. Here is a glance at the incoming Syracuse transfer class so far. Jaeden Gould, DB Jaeden Gould is an excellent addition to this Syracuse transfer class. Gould transferred from Nebraska after his freshman season where he appeared in one game. At six-foot-two, 200 lbs, Gould has an excellent build for a defensive back. Gould was a safety on the Nebraska depth chart, but he can also play cornerback. With the departures of Duce Chestnut and Garrett Williams, Syracuse could slide him in at corner, but also could line him up at safety. Gould uses his strong build to his advantage as a tackler. Gould displayed his prowess as a tackler during his time at Bergen Catholic in New Jersey. He not only has excellent form, but he can also deliver big hits. Gould was a four star prospect in high school and clearly has the ability to be an impact player for the Orange. This is a great fit given the losses in the Syracuse secondary. Gould should be in the mix for a starting spot when the 2023 season comes around. Jayden Bellamy, DB Jayden Bellamy is another nice pickup for Syracuse. Bellamy is a defensive back who entered the transfer portal from Notre Dame. He played high school football with Gould at Bergen Catholic and will reunite with him at Syracuse. Bellamy took a redshirt year and did not see the field for the Fighting Irish in his freshman season. That leaves Bellamy with four years of eligibility remaining. Even though there is no tape on Bellamy this season, he is still a very intriguing prospect. He had a very solid high school career at Bergen Catholic and finished as the fifth-ranked player in the state of New Jersey. ... Syracuse football: now that the transfer portal has opened what will the Orange need to add to their list? (TNIAAM; Wall) As the transfer portal swells to over 1,000 players, the Syracuse Orange must keep an eye on that list while preparing for the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl. Let's just get that out of the way. Smaller than Duke, Baylor, Stanford, Boston College, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, or TCU. Yet, when it comes to college football bowl success, there are some winners in that group - TCU is in the playoffs this year, and I don't have to tell you about Notre Dame. Wake Forest has been one of the good teams in recent decades. When the ACC was formed in 1953, Wake was a founding member, but the Deacs didn't even play in a bowl game until 1979 - a game they lost. Their next shot at a bowl victory didn't come until 1992, when a head coach well-known to many ACC football programs, Bill Dooley, led them to their first bowl win as an ACC team. The recent run of success began about 7 years later, but during that time the Deacs are 8-4 in bowl games (and one of those losses was to current ACC conferencemate Louisville).

Year Bowl Score Opponent WF Head coach

1945 Gator W 26–14 S Carolina Gamecocks Peahead Walker

1948 Dixie L 20–7 Baylor Bears Peahead Walker

1979 Tangerine L 34–10 LSU Tigers John Mackovic

1992 Independence W 39–35 Oregon Ducks Bill Dooley

1999 Aloha W 23–3 Arizona St Sun Devils Jim Caldwell

2002 Seattle W 38–17 Oregon Ducks Jim Grobe

2006 Orange L 24–13 Louisville Cardinals Jim Grobe

2007 Meineke Car Care W 24–10 Connecticut Huskies Jim Grobe

2008 EagleBank W 29–19 Navy Midshipmen Jim Grobe

2011 Music City L 23–17 Mississippi St Bulldogs Jim Grobe

2016 Military W 34–26 Temple Owls Dave Clawson

2017 Belk W 55–52 Texas A&M Aggies Dave Clawson

2018 Birmingham W 37–34 Memphis Tigers Dave Clawson

2019 Pinstripe L 21–27 Michigan St Spartans Dave Clawson

2020 Duke's Mayo L 28–42 Wisconsin Badgers Dave Clawson

2021 Gator W 38–10 Rutgers Scarlet Knights Dave Clawson

2022 Gasparilla TBD Missouri Tigers Dave Clawson

... Why the CFP Didn't Go Far Enough (RX; HM) Why the CFP Didn't Go Far Enough Beginning in 2024 (sorry, have to wait another year) there will be a 12-team playoff field where the top 4 conference champions will get a first-round bye (but not home field advantage) while the 8 highest-ranked teams remaining will play a first round game at the home of the higher seeds. apartments in Syracuse (PS; Carlson) A developer planning yet another apartment complex in the lucrative housing market around Syracuse University has received a green light and hopes to break ground on the project in early 2023. The six-story development will preserve a Ward Wellington Ward home on East Genesee Street. Timberwolf Capital Properties, a Wyoming-based developer, plans to convert the historic home into either retail or office space. The Syracuse Planning Commission voted unanimously last week to approve the development. It will be called Coda on Crouse or “The Coda.” John Hoover, the manager of Timberwolf Capital Properties, said he hopes the building will be completed in early 2024. The building’s amenities will include a rooftop deck, a year-round heated pool and hot tub with heated deck, a podcast and TikToc studio, a fitness center and yoga studio. The development joins a stretch of apartment complexes that have cropped up on Genesee Street, catering largely to students. It sits between two of them, Theory Syracuse and Copper Beach Commons. The development will run along South Crouse Avenue, from East Fayette Street to East Genesee Street. The main entrance would sit on the corner of South Crouse and East Genesee. Hoover said he doesn’t envision students making up the majority of residents despite the prime location near SU. Hoover said 70 percent of the apartments will be either studio or one-bedroom apartments. Only six percent of the apartments will have more than two bedrooms. He said most student housing developments usually focus on multi-bedroom units, allowing students to live together in a group setting. In addition to students, he said he believes the smaller apartments will appeal to young professionals, employees of the nearby hospitals and graduate and medical school students. ...
