Welcome to Diesel Engine Day!
We celebrate the diesel engine today, on the anniversary of the date it first received a patent. German engineer Rudolf Diesel came up with the engine after setting out to improve the efficiency of the Otto engine. He came to the conclusion that the electric ignition process in that engine and others could be done away with if air could be heated to at least its auto-ignition temperature. A patent for the diesel engine, German Patent 67207—titled "Arbeitsverfahren und Ausführungsart für Verbrennungsmaschinen," meaning "Working Methods and Techniques for Internal Combustion Engines"—was granted to him on February 23, 1893.

Syracuse football extended a scholarship offer to class of 2024 defensive back Justin Denson. Denson also holds offers from Ole Miss, Kansas, Michigan State, Maryland, Purdue and West Virginia, among others. Denson was originally part of the 2023 recruiting class, but reclassified to 2024 and has seen his recruitment take off recently. The Orange offer, though, he says was different.
"Got a text after my life from coach Nunz telling me to give him a call," Denson said. "It went very well. Damn near cried. Deeper than football with that one."
The reason it is deeper than football?
"It means a lot because my mom wanted to go to Cuse for college but never had the opportunity," Denson said.
Denson, who stars for La Salle Academy in Rhode Island, has experience playing wide receiver and defensive back in high school. Syracuse likes him as a defensive back who could play corner and/or safety. In fact, he could transition to the rover position in the Orange's 3-3-5 scheme if he picks Syracuse.

Syracuse University hires coach with SU ties to lead one of school’s most successful programs (PS; Carlson)
Syracuse University athletic director John Wildhack opted for familiarity on Wednesday when hiring a new coach to lead one of the school’s most successful programs, naming Lynn Farquhar as the next leader of the school’s field hockey team.
Farquhar, who was the head coach at St. Joseph’s University for eight seasons, spent four seasons at Syracuse previously as an assistant under Ange Bradley.
Bradley, who turned Syracuse’s program into a national champion and a national force, retired after this past season with the Orange still performing at a level near the top of the country.
Farquhar, who played at Old Dominion, was the first assistant coach that Bradley hired at Syracuse. She coached at SU from 2007 to 2010. She had also coached with Bradley for two years at the University of Richmond.

North Carolina's Drake Maye and Florida State's Jordan Travis highlight the proven options atop the ACC quarterback rankings for '23. Both Maye and Travis should contend for All-America honors this fall and are easily among the top 10 signal-callers in the nation. But after the top two is where the intrigue begins in the ACC. Clemson's Cade Klubnik is poised for a breakout year, Duke's Riley Leonard is on the rise, and Brennan Armstrong hopes to regain his form under offensive coordinator Robert Anae after transferring to NC State. Pitt's Phil Jurkovec and Miami's Tyler Van Dyke are two other quarterbacks also hoping to rebound in '23.
With spring practice quickly approaching, Athlon Sports will examine the quarterback situations for the Power 5 conferences and how the outlook has changed from last season. Here's a look at the ACC for '23:
Maye paced ACC quarterbacks by averaging 358.5 total yards a game and finished '22 with 45 overall scores in his first year as the starter. Whether it was through the air (4,321 yards) or on the ground (698), Maye was the prolific director of North Carolina's high-powered offense. He won't have No. 1 receiver Josh Downs to throw to, and there's a new coordinator (Chip Lindsey), but Maye is a no-doubt All-America selection for '23.
2. Jordan Travis, Florida State
Travis has made massive improvement under coach Mike Norvell and is among the nation's top returning signal-callers for '23. In 13 games last year, Travis threw for 3,214 yards and 24 touchdowns to only five picks. He also added 417 yards and seven scores on the ground. Accuracy is one area Travis has made significant strides over the last couple of years. After completing just 55 percent of his passes in '20, the Florida native connected on 64 percent and averaged a healthy 9.1 yards per attempt last season.
3. Cade Klubnik, Clemson
Expectations are high for Klubnik to rank among college football's top breakout quarterbacks for '23. As expected, Klubnik had his share of ups and downs as a true freshman last fall. However, his performance in the ACC title game (309 total yards and two scores) showcased his upside, and new play-caller Garrett Riley should help get the most out of his talent.
4. Riley Leonard, Duke
Leonard was one of the ACC's top breakout players last season. After entering the year as a question mark, Leonard proceeded to throw for 2,967 yards and 20 touchdowns and ran for 699 yards and 13 scores over 13 games for a much-improved Duke offense.
5. Brennan Armstrong, NC State
Reuniting with play-caller Robert Anae at NC State should get Armstrong's career back on track after he transferred from Virginia. After throwing for 4,449 yards and 31 touchdowns and adding 251 yards and nine scores on the ground in '21, Armstrong amassed only 2,210 yards and seven touchdowns to 12 picks through the air last year for the Cavaliers.
6. Garrett Shrader, Syracuse
Robert Anae's arrival as offensive coordinator helped Shrader elevate his play in '22. After completing 52.6 percent of his passes and averaging 6.2 yards per attempt, Shrader's completion percentage jumped to 64.7 percent and 8.3 yards per attempt in '23. Overall, Shrader threw for 2,640 yards and 17 touchdowns and added another 543 yards and nine scores on the ground. With Anae departing for NC State, can new play-caller Jason Beck continue to help Shrader's progression?

North Carolina earns top-25 spot in ESPN's way-too-early rankings for 2023 - Saturday Road (saturdayroad.com; Daly)
North Carolina is ranked in ESPN’s way-too-early rankings for the 2023 season.
In the rankings, North Carolina earned a spot as the No. 21 ranked team heading into 2023. North Carolina’s success in 2022 contributed to the positive outlook for next season. The Tar Heels finished 2022 with a 9-5 record and an appearance in the ACC Championship Game.
To end the season, North Carolina suffered 4 consecutive loss to Georgia Tech, NC State, Clemson, and Oregon. The string of losses at the end of the season took away from North Carolina’s 9-1 start to the season. North Carolina’s last win came against Wake Forest on Nov. 12.
Even with the struggles late in the season, North Carolina managed to win the most games in a season since 2015. North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye emerged as one of the best quarterbacks in college football and he will return for next season.
ESPN college football writer Mark Schlabach explained why he placed North Carolina in the top 25:

ACC Revenue Projection from Forbes Statement
In our post this morning called "ACC + Pac Still Talking...", we observed a statement made in passing and posted on Forbes.com:
In an article he posted last October, David Teel stated:
That works out to $19.2M and $22.2M, respectively. So, if a contract which began in 2016 with the GoR extension and ends in 2036 pays an average of $36M over its lifetime, how much must the escalator be?
Here's what we know:
See what's happening? a $10 million/year increase every 5 years. Now I can't promise that kind of rapid revenue growth will continue - a lot of it is probably due to the ACC Network, though at least some of it is also due to the T1 contract escalator. That said, IF this trend continues, you're looking at...

‘Manodrome’ reviews: New Syracuse movie has critics talking about ‘Fight Club’ (PS; Herbert)
The first rule of “Fight Club” is you do not talk about “Fight Club.” Unless you’re talking about “Manodrome.”
“Manodrome,” a new movie shot in Syracuse, premiered at the Berlin film festival over the weekend with a cast that includes Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg, Academy Award winner Adrien Brody, Odessa Young, Ethan Suplee and Evan Jonigkeit. Eisenberg plays a troubled rideshare driver who’s broke with a pregnant girlfriend when he meets “a mysterious family of men” with shared frustrations.
The film garnered mostly positive reviews from critics, who all felt compelled to compare the movie to David Fincher’s 1999 flick “Fight Club.” The big difference is how seriously “Manodrome” tackles the subject of toxic masculinity, for better or worse.
“‘Fight Club’ looms large over writer-director John Trengrove’s unsettling second feature... which finds the state of masculinity even more fraught than Fincher did a quarter-century ago. Trengrove, who is gay and hails from South Africa (his 2017 debut, “The Wound,” was shortlisted for the Oscar international prize), brings a queer sensibility to his otherwise unsatisfying analysis of contemporary manhood, enlisting Jesse Eisenberg to play yet another scrawny white guy seeking an outlet for deep wells of festering aggression,” Variety wrote.

Tyrone Senior Earns Full Tuition Scholarship to Syracuse (tyroneeagleeyenews.com; Miksich)
For every student-athlete who receives an athletic scholarship, there are many more who earn scholarships of similar or greater value as a result of their hard work and talent in academics and extracurricular activities. Unfortunately, these academic stars often receive less attention and accolades for their accomplishments than their athletically gifted classmates.
Tyrone senior Hailey Vanish is a perfect example of a student whose academic and extra-curricular achievements have earned her a prestigious academic scholarship.
“
Don’t limit yourself to the colleges that your friends are planning on attending. Look at all the opportunities that are available to you and what different colleges have to offer before deciding where you want to go”
— Hailey Vanish
Vanish will attend Syracuse University in the fall on a full tuition scholarship worth over $58,000 a year.
Syracuse University, located in upstate New York, is ranked #62 among the Best National Universities and #42 for Best Undergraduate Teaching by US News and World Report.
“When I first applied, an admissions counselor reached out to me to do an interview over Zoom so she could get a better understanding of who I am as a person and what led me to choose Syracuse,” said Vanish.
The counselor encouraged Vanish to apply for the university’s “1870 Scholarship,” named for the year Syracuse was founded. It is the highest recognition offered by the Office of Admissions and is awarded only to a few incoming freshmen each year.
When she found out that she got the scholarship, Vanish was ecstatic.
“I think my application stood out due to how involved I am through extracurricular activities and my commitment to challenge myself academically through honors and dual enrollment courses. I also love to volunteer in my community and go out of my way to help others,” said Vanish.
Vanish’s mother Amanda Burega, who is also a business education teacher at Tyrone Area High School, agreed that it was not only her daughter’s grades but also her extracurriculars and community service that helped to earn the scholarship.
“Colleges look for students that not only have good grades but are also heavily involved in their school,” said Burega.
According to the Syracuse Univerity website, recipients of this scholarship are chosen for their “academic and creative accomplishments, commitment to community service and demonstrated financial need.”
The 1870 scholarship “recognizes students of talent and promise of all identities and backgrounds who have further exemplified values like innovation, discovery and courage.”
The scholarship covers full tuition for the length of the student’s undergraduate program and recipients are also admitted into the Renée Crown University Honors Program at Syracuse.

ACC Revenue Projection from Forbes Statement
In our post this morning called "ACC + Pac Still Talking...", we observed a statement made in passing and posted on Forbes.com:
Why is that worth noticing, you ask? Oh, just one reason... because the most recent...the ACC [tv] rights deal that pays each school 36 million dollars through 2036...
In an article he posted last October, David Teel stated:
$397.4 divided by 15 yields just $26.5 million. Just two years earlier, ESPN posted this financial information regarding the ACC:Like its Power Five peers, the ACC derives virtually all revenue from football postseason, the NCAA men’s basketball tournament and television rights. For example, in 2020-21, television ($397.4 million), bowls ($109.4 million) and the NCAA tournament ($64.1 million) accounted for 98.7% of ACC revenue.
source: ACC expects record revenue in 2021-22
Television revenue [for 2019-20] increased from $288 million the previous year to $332.8 million, as the ACC Network launched in August 2019.
That works out to $19.2M and $22.2M, respectively. So, if a contract which began in 2016 with the GoR extension and ends in 2036 pays an average of $36M over its lifetime, how much must the escalator be?
Here's what we know:
In 2016-17, the ACC split about $16 million/school.
In 2020-21 (5 years later), it split $26.5 million/school.
The middle of the contract is 2026, so call it $36 million/school (although, actually, they are rumored to be splitting about that much this year).
See what's happening? a $10 million/year increase every 5 years. Now I can't promise that kind of rapid revenue growth will continue - a lot of it is probably due to the ACC Network, though at least some of it is also due to the T1 contract escalator.
