Welcome to INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY (aka REMEMBERING CALI DAY)!

EVERYONE IS TO PUT THE CAPS LOCK ON BEFORE TYPING ON INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY, A DAY THOUGHT UP BY DEREK ARNOLD OF IOWA IN 2000. HE STARTED THE DAY AS A PARODY, TO TAKE A JAB AT THOSE WHO WRITE IN CAPS WHEN IT IS NOT NECESSARY. WRITING IN ALL CAPS IS OFTEN USED TO INDICATE THAT THE PERSON TYPING IS SHOUTING, AND ITS USE IS OFTEN SEEN AS BEING RUDE OR ANNOYING. BEING THAT CAPS LETTERS ARE ALL THE SAME HEIGHT, THEY ARE HARDER TO READ THAN LOWER CASE LETTERS. THIS GIVES ONE INDICATION OF WHY THEY MAY BE SEEN AS BEING ANNOYING. THE DAY WAS ORIGINALLY JUST CELEBRATED ON OCTOBER 22, BUT AFTER "INFOMERCIAL KING" BILLY MAYS PASSED AWAY ON JUNE 28 IN 2009, THE DAY BEGAN BEING CELEBRATED ON THAT DATE AS WELL. THIS IS BECAUSE THE CAPS LOCK KEY STARTED BEING CALLED THE BILLY MAYS KEY BECAUSE BILLY MAYS SEEMED LIKE HE WAS ALWAYS YELLING WHEN HE TALKED ABOUT A PRODUCT.

Cardinal Hayes High School quarterback heading to Syracuse University (youtube; video; Fox 5 NY)

Rich Belin, the quarterback of Cardinal Hayes High School's football team in the Bronx, announced Thursday that he would stay in state and play college football at Syracuse University.

Syracuse football boosts 2025 QB room with 3-star Rich Belin, NY's player of the year (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football coaches added to their quarterback room in the team's 2025 class on Thursday as three-star prospect Rich Belin verbally committed to the Orange, according to media reports.

The 6-foot, 185-pound Belin, who put forth an exceptional junior year in the 2023 season for his New York City program, was re-offered a scholarship by head coach Fran Brown and the new 'Cuse staff in early June.

Also earlier this month, Belin took an official visit to the Hill. Following that visit, Belin told top 247Sports analyst Mike McAllister that Syracuse football was in his top three, along with Delaware and Princeton.

Per 247Sports, Belin has picked up 25 scholarship offers throughout his recruiting process. A huge congrats and welcome from Orange Nation to Rich!

Prolific in-state QB Rich Belin commits to Syracuse (247sports.com; Dohn)

Dohn should have mentioned that Belin was the Gatorade Player of the Year in NYS. But I understand why he omitted that from his article. ;)

Rich Belin was patient and he trusted his ability. It led to his first Power Four offer in early June, which eventually led to his commitment Thursday.

The prolific Bronx Cardinal Hayes quarterback is staying in state after announcing his commitment to Syracuse. The 5-foot 11 1/2, 190-pound Belin said everything about the Orange made for an easy decision despite offers from some of the top academic universities in the world.

"The program is on a straight path to success as it is a faith-driven program," Belin said. "Being that I grew up in the church it is amazing to have a head coach (Fran Brown) that not only believes in God but also incorporates it into the whole team.

"Even for the ones that do not believe in God, understanding that there is something bigger than yourself is the key to succeeding in life."

Part of the Syracuse makeover involves former NFL assistant coach Jeff Nixon running the offense.

"The offensive system is modeled after an NFL system because coach Nixon is a former coach in the league," Belin said. "It is extremely quarterback friendly as the game plan changes and adjusts to whoever is running the show.

"It is vital in today's game to be able to do different things and Syracuse has the ability to do just that."

Belin began his high school career as a receiver, catching passes from his brother, Henry Belin, who now plays at Duke.

Syracuse football receives commitment from New York’s Gatorade State Player of the Year (PS; $; Carlson)

New York’s reigning Gatorade State Player of the Year Rich Belin, a quarterback at Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, verbally committed to the Syracuse football program on Thursday.

He committed at a ceremony at Cardinal Hayes where he was flanked by his parents. The ceremony was broadcast on Instagram.

“There’s a lot of change coming, good change coming,” Belin said at the ceremony. “And that’s what I want to be a part of.”

Belin is the 26th verbal commitment in Syracuse’s Class of 2025 and the ninth commitment that the Orange has received from a New York prospect.

Belin is ranked as a three-star prospect in the 247 Sports composite rankings, which label him the No. 14 prospect in New York in the Class of 2025, the No. 91 quarterback prospect nationally and the No. 1,442 prospect in the country. Among the four major recruiting websites, Belin is ranked as high as the No. 10 prospect in the state by Rivals.

Belin lists himself at 6-feet tall and 185 pounds. Verbal commitments are not binding until after a player signs a National Letter of Intent.

According to 247 Sports, Syracuse was the only Power-Four school to offer Belin during his recruitment. Other FBS programs like Old Dominion, UConn, Army and Kent State also offered during his recruitment.

Belin is the brother of former Syracuse recruit (and current Duke quarterback) Henry Belin IV. Another brother, Blake, is a three-star defensive lineman who has also been offered by Syracuse in the Class of 2025.

Belin gives Syracuse a second commitment from a quarterback in the 2025 cycle, joining three-star Texas prospect Luke Carney.

With Kyle McCord expected to start for the Orange this season and exhaust his eligibility, both quarterbacks will likely arrive in a situation where Syracuse has no proven option at quarterback returning.

According to the website MaxPreps.com, Belin threw for 3,112 yards over 14 games last season, compiling 30 touchdowns against four interceptions. He also ran for 1,351 yards. Cardinal Hayes went 12-2 last season and won the New York Class AAA state championship. His performance won him the Gatorade State Player of the Year Award in New York.

The award is among the country’s most prestigious at the high school level. The last winner in New York who went on to attend Syracuse was running back Jordan Fredericks, who won the award in 2014.

CJ May, a Notre Dame decommit who lists Syracuse football as a finalist in his recruitment, sets decision date (PS; $; Carlson)
Four-star edge rusher CJ May, who lists Syracuse football as one of the four finalists in his recruitment, plans to announce his college choice on July 13.

May said he will announce his choice of schools at 1:30 p.m. at Highland Home (Alabama) High School. His four finalists include Louisville, Washington, Syracuse and Auburn, a school in his home state.

May announced that group of schools earlier this week.

May decommitted from Notre Dame in February and visited Syracuse in April. He is listed by 247 Sports at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds.

Syracuse football: Orange’s 2025 class ranks in ESPN’s Top-20 (TNIAAM; Fowler)
ESPN’s Craig Haubert recently dropped his updated top-25 class of 2025 college football recruiting rankings and the Syracuse Orange come in at 18th.

The Orange with 25 total commitments, the most commits behind only Rutgers (27), were previously ranked 12th. 10 of the committed 2025 recruits for Syracuse are from the tri-state area.

School Scorecard:

ESPN 300 commits: 0

3-star prospects: 24

Unranked prospects: 1

Top Offensive Prospect: WR Darien Williams

Williams is a local product from Christian Brothers Academy (CBA). He is New York State’s third highest-ranked recruit behind ESPN300 prospect Lyrick Samuel (WR) and Jayden Mann (OT). Williams is quick off the line of scrimmage and uses his larger 6-0 frame to adjust and make more difficult grabs in the air.

2024 Syracuse Football Predictions
Why Syracuse Football Has an Outside Chance at the College Football Playoff - '24 Schedule Takeaways (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)
Syracuse Football has a "not impossible" chance at making the 2024 College Football Playoff, which will be 12 teams next season. The Orange will have two bye weeks to get its studs healthy in the event of injury, Fran Brown's squad also has the easiest schedule, according to ESPN. The defining stretch for Kyle McCord, Oronde Gadsden, and company will come from early October to mid November (@UNLV, @NC State, BYE, @Pitt, Virginia Tech, @Boston College, and @California).
Get to Know Your Orange Man: #38, TE Max Runyon (TNIAAM; Chiappone)
It’s time to start preparing for the 2024 Syracuse Orange football season. We’re going through the roster to take a look at each Syracuse player as we get to know a lot of new faces to kick off the Fran Brown Era.

Next up is...

Name: Max Runyon

Position: Tight End

Year: Redshirt Junior

Height: 6’0”

Weight: 228 lbs.

Hometown: Saddle River, NJ

High School: St. Joseph’s Regional High School/Lafayette

2023 stats: N/A (redshirted entire year)

2024 projections: Given Syracuse’s current depth at the tight end spot, Runyon will likely serve as a deep-reserve tight end. He hasn’t had much time to show much as a pass-catcher, but a lot of his tape shows he’s got some potential as a blocker. Maybe he can find a spot as a pseudo-fullback or in special teams, but with the Orange’s stacked rotation at the position, Runyon’s role in 2024 will likely not extend much beyond that.

How’d he get here?: Runyon was one of eight players from New Jersey who either signed, planned to sign or verbally committed back in 2019. At the time, he committed to Lafayette but played zero games with the program. He joined the Orange in the summer of 2023.

Today's obituary: William Moll, 91, played in the 1953 Orange Bowl for SU and was a Syracuse gym teacher (PS; $; Croyle)
William J. Moll of East Syracuse died on Wednesday, June 19, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, following complications from a recent fall.

He was 91 years old.

According to his obituary, the former Syracuse University football player and educator was born in Abington, PA on July 20, 1932 to William and Mildred Wentzell Moll. Following his father’s early passing, his mother married Joseph Hetherington and the family moved to Croydon.

Moll graduated from Bristol High School in 1950 and accepted a full scholarship to Syracuse University where he played fullback for the football team under coach Ben Schwartzwalder.

Newspapers often used the term “hard running” to describe Moll’s playing style.

“Once again it was an unsung gridder who stole show as Bill Moll, sophomore fullback from Croydon, PA,” The Post-Standard reported after one spirited team practice in 1951, “he showed speed and plenty of elusiveness as he paced the Orange through their long session.”

He scored two touchdowns for the freshman team in 1950 against archrival Colgate and, according to his obituary, had one of “his top football highlights” when he played against Alabama at the 1953 Orange Bowl.

Moll married Rosemary A. Cotton on July 23, 1955, at St. James Episcopal Church in Greenfield, MA. She predeceased him on July 20, 2021, after nearly 66 years of marriage.

He served in the U.S. Army stationed in Korea. Upon returning to the U.S., he served in the Army Reserves unit in Syracuse until 1964.

Moll began his career as a physical education teacher in the Syracuse public schools in the late 1950s. He was also an assistant football coach at Nottingham High School.

After completing his master’s degree at Syracuse University, he entered public school administration and became vice-principal at Nottingham High School before accepting a position as high school principal at Sauquoit Valley High School in Sauquoit, NY where he served from 1968-1987. Moll was a member of the Lions Club in Syracuse and Sauquoit, New York State Teachers Association and other educational associations.

He was a vestry member at St. James Episcopal Church in Clinton, NY and more recently a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, NY. He is survived by sons, William, Jr. (Elizabeth) of Delmar, NY, Brian of Malden, MA, Garrett (Christine) of Pompey, NY; granddaughters, Makenna and Kinsey of Rochester, NY; and several nieces and nephews. His family would like to thank the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse for their recent care. They are also grateful for the support of Moll’s neighbors and Trinity Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 9 Williams Street, Clinton, NY 13323 or to Trinity Episcopal Church, 106 Chapel Street, Fayetteville, NY 13066. A memorial service will be announced later. For guest book, please visit: www.SCHEPPFAMILY.com.

2024 ACC K/P Rankings Led by Miami's Andres Borregales (CFN; Fragoza)

Hmmmm. Jack Stonehouse averaged 44.6 ypp.
Daniel Sparks 42.9
Dylan Joyce 43.8
Aiden Swanson 43.7
Alex Mastromanno averaged 45.5 ypp. It makes sense to put him before Jack. All the others, no way. What were you thinking Fragoza? Do your homework next time...

The ACC is chock-full of elite talents, including at kicker and punter. However, two programs stand above the rest on the 2024 ACC K/P Rankings, and both reside in the Sunshine State.

ACC 2024 K/P Rankings

10) Daniel Sparks, P, Virginia Cavaliers

Daniel Sparks routinely gets some of the longest hangtimes on his punts, but his coverage unit let him down last season. Following a 45.9-yard average and 26.1% inside the 15-yard-line rate in 2022, leading to a second-team All-ACC selection, his numbers fell to 42.9 and 15.6% in 2023.

With some positive regression from the rest of the special teams unit, Sparks could land on an All-ACC team once again this year.

9) Will Bettridge, K, Virginia Cavaliers

Virginia is coming off back-to-back three-win campaigns, but don’t blame Will Bettridge. He connected on all 31 of his extra points and 18 of 21 field goals, with two of his misses coming from 40+ yards. He doesn’t have the biggest leg at 5’10” and 175 pounds, which is why he hasn’t attempted a 50+ yarder in his career.

Regardless, Bettridge is accurate within his range and is a steady presence in unsteady waters.

8) Dylan Joyce, P, Miami Hurricanes

A native Australian, Dylan Joyce put opposing punt return units on the barbie last fall. He averaged 43.8 yards on 43 punts, booting seven 50+ yards downfield and landing 15 inside the 20. He could be even better in 2024 after having a full offseason to further unlock his pack-a-punch leg.

7) Aidan Birr, K, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

As a true freshman in 2022, Aidan Birr sat behind Gavin Stewart, who set Georgia Tech’s single-season field goal rate at 92.3%. All he did when he took over the starting kicking role in 2023 was record the second-highest single-season field goal rate in program history (89.5%), making 15 of 19 field goals.

6) Aidan Swanson, P, Clemson Tigers

Aidan Swanson recorded the most punts inside the 20 last season (28) and is back for his fifth and final campaign. He gets plenty of air under his attempts, giving his coverage unit time to get downfield and make the tackle.

Swanson showed immense growth from 2022 when he pushed more than a few balls out of bounds. Maintaining his form from last year will cement his spot on an All-ACC team.

5) Alex Mastromanno, P, Florida State Seminoles

With Duke’s Porter Wilson gone, there is only one man who deserves his place as the ACC’s best punter: Alex Mastromanno.

Among returning conference players, he ranks first in punt average (45.5) and 50+ yard attempts (19) and second in punts inside the 20 (26). The Seminoles will look a lot different in 2024, but Mastromanno will ensure the punting unit remains elite.

4) Ryan Fitzgerald, K, Florida State Seminoles

A mainstay in FSU’s special teams room since 2020, Ryan Fitzgerald is one of the most experienced kickers in the country. Last season, he made 100% of his XPs (58 of 58) and 90.5% of his FGs (19 of 21). On top of his steadiness in high-pressure moments, he’s served as the Seminoles’ kickoff specialist over the last two years.

3) John Love, K, Virginia Tech Hokies

John Love proved to be one of the best kickers in the nation last year after converting all 47 of his extra points and 22 of 24 of his field goals. He played a pivotal role in turning around Virginia Tech’s season following a 2-4 start. Another performance like that should result in more than an honorable mention All-ACC spot.

2) Noah Burnette, K, North Carolina Tar Heels

Noah Burnette has kicked 101 extra points over the last two years — he’s made 100 of them. But more than that, he missed just one of his 20 field goals in 2023, which was the second-highest FG rate (95%) among all kickers with at least 20 attempts.

The Tar Heels are replacing first-round NFL Draft pick Drake Maye under center this year, meaning they’ll rely on Burnette more than ever to convert when he trots onto the field.

1) Andres Borregales, K, Miami Hurricanes

Fresh off a Lou Groza Award semifinalist first-team All-ACC season, Andres Borregales is the best kicker or punter returning to the conference.

He owns one of the strongest legs in the country, making 4 of 6 FGs of 50+ yards last season. Much has been made of Miami’s roster additions this year, but don’t forget about the weapon they have on special teams.

https://www.collegefootballdawgs.com/post/the-best-college-football-season-from-every-acc-school (collegefootballdawgs.com; Gaither)

The Atlantic Coast Conference has a storied history and prowess in college football. Even less desirable programs like Wake Forest and Boston College have shined at the moments when they had the potential to make a run. Here are the best seasons that every ACC football team has ever had

Editor's note: Notre Dame is not included in this list and neither is Cal, Stanford or SMU.

Boston College: 1940

The best team in Boston College history was their 11-0 season in 1940 under Hall of Fame coach Frank Leahy. They outscored opponents 320-52 during the year.

The quarterback of this team was future Chicago Bears and Baltimore Colts quarterback Charlie O'Rourke, who ran in the game-winning score against Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl to give Boston College a claim to the national championship. They ranked fifth in the Associated Press Poll in all-time coaching great Frank Leahy’s second season with the team.

Clemson: 2018

Even though the 2016 Clemson team was the one that broke through to win their first title since 1981, the 2018 team solidified the Tigers' spot on top of the college football world with a perfect 15-0 record and 44-16 blowout win against Alabama in the national championship game. Players like defensive tackle Christian Wilkins and offensive tackle Mitch Hyatt were able to claim the second national championship of their careers, and true freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence emerged as a star that will rank right up there with former Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson in the halls of Clemson's history.

Throughout the 2018 season, Clemson was regarded as one of the best teams in the country but always ran second to Alabama until a 27-point win against Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff semifinals and the 28-point win against the Tide in the CFP National Championship left the Tigers not just as the undisputed best team in the land that season. It's not just the best Clemson season, it might be one of the best seasons for any team in the modern era.

Duke: 1941

Coach Wallace Wade had the 1941 Duke Blue Devils ranked among the top teams in the country, finishing the year with a 9-0 regular-season record behind an offense that averaged 34.5 points per game with three 50-point performances.

To end the year, they would host the Rose Bowl due to World War II conflict on the Pacific Coast and beat Oregon State 20-16.

Florida State: 2013

FSU has given us multiple seasons to choose from when it comes to picking their best one yet, but 2013 is head and shoulders above any other year of Seminole football. Florida State decimated its path to the national championship win over Auburn, outscoring their opponents by a combined 723-170. Their closest regular-season game was against Boston College, and they won by two touchdowns. The closest game behind that one was over Miami (ranked No. 7 at the time) by 27. Did I mention that their quarterback Jameis Winston won the Heisman Trophy?

With 23 future NFL Draft picks on the roster, including Winston and two more consensus All-Americans (Bryan Stork and Lamarcus Joyner) along with standout wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin, Florida State was No. 1 in the country in kickoff return yardage, interceptions, passing yards allowed, red zone offense, scoring defense, passing efficiency and set a new record with 723 total points. The Seminoles were also top-5 in the country in total defense, scoring offense per game, turnover margin, and set nine new ACC records that included scoring margin, touchdowns, and consecutive 40-point games.

Georgia Tech: 1990

The Yellow Jackets went undefeated in 1990, composing a final record of 11-0-1, beating four ranked teams, including No. 1 Virginia. Following the conclusion of their play, multiple selectors deemed Georgia Tech a national champion.

The UPI Coaches Poll named Georgia Tech the national champion after the Yellow Jackets beat Nebraska in the Citrus Bowl, but ended up sharing the honor with Colorado, who finished No. 1 in the final AP poll after beating Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl to finish 11-1-1. Bobby Ross was named national Coach of the Year and defensive back Ken Swilling was a consensus All-American in the program's first conference and national championship season since 1952.

Louisville: 2006

The 2006 Louisville Cardinals defeated three of their four ranked foes by two scores or more, one of them being the 11-2 Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the Orange Bowl. Louisville’s only blemish was a 28-25 loss at No. 14 Rutgers, who had an impressive season in their own right.

They finished 12-1 with a top-5 final ranking despite losing star running back Michael Bush to a season-ending injury in the season opener against Kentucky. Quarterback Brian Brohm played extremely well, and if Louisville had beat Rutgers in the final game of the regular season, they'd likely be in the mix with Ohio State and Florida for a spot in the BCS Championship Game.

Miami: 2001

This was one of the easier choices on this list. The 2001 Miami Hurricanes are the greatest college football team ever assembled The Hurricanes began their season ranked No. 2 and never fell below such a threshold. They faced five ranked opponents, only one of which kept the game within less than 22 points. They had an average margin of victory of 32.9 points per game.

Their roster also produced several NFL players, 38 to be exact, including defensive backs like the late great Sean Taylor and Hall of Famer Ed Reed. Miami had six consensus All-Americans: offensive tackles Joaquin Gonzalez and Bryant McKinnie, Ed Reed, cornerback Phillip Buchanon, tight end Jeremy Shockey and kicker Todd Sievers.

North Carolina: 1997

In 1997, the North Carolina Tar Heels went 11-1, their only loss to No. 3 Florida State. They finished the season ranked No. 6 in the AP Poll. Brown's 1997 season, his last of the first stint as coach before leaving for Texas, was the culmination of the long road back to national prominence.

They finished the year with three consensus All-Americans: defensive end Greg Ellis, cornerback Dre Bly and linebacker Brian Simmons, and three first-round picks in the 1998 NFL Draft: Ellis, Simmons, and defensive end Vonnie Holliday. Brown had gone from back-to-back one-win seasons to back-to-back 10-win seasons over a decade, raised the talent level in the program, and forever changed what many thought could be accomplished at North Carolina.

North Carolina State: 2002

In 2002, North Carolina State went 11-3, with two wins over ranked opponents and all three of their losses being decided by 7 points or less. N.C. State's first and only 11-win season came amid Florida State's ACC dominance thanks to a former Bobby Bowden assistant, Chuck Amato, who brought the national spotlight to Raleigh in 2002.

N.C. State won seven ACC championships from 1957-79, but the highest ranking in the poll era (No. 12) came from this team that went 11-3, knocked off the Seminoles and beat Notre Dame 28-6 in the Gator Bowl. What the 2002 team lacks in championships it makes up for with national significance and the star power of quarterback Philip Rivers, safety Terrence Holt and eight other future NFL Draft picks.

Pittsburgh: 1976

In 1976, Pittsburgh beat Notre Dame and Penn State in the regular season before taking down Georgia in the Sugar Bowl to finish as a 12-0 consensus national champion.

Hall of Famer Johnny Majors was named national Coach of the Year, and even on a team with 19 future NFL Draft picks, there was one lone star who shined brighter than any other: Hall of Fame running back Tony Dorsett. The 1976 season saw Dorsett win the Heisman Trophy and break what was then the NCAA career rushing record.

Syracuse: 1959

The 1959 Syracuse Orange were also consensus champs, with an 11-0 record and a star running back in Ernie Davis, who took home the Heisman Trophy just two seasons later. Syracuse went on to take down No. 4 Texas in the Cotton Bowl, 23-14.

Offensive lineman Roger Davis, another key piece to Davis' success that year, was a consensus All-American year as well as Hall of Fame coach Ben Schwartzwalder, who oversaw the program's incredible run of dominant backs that stretched from Jim Brown to Davis to Floyd Little and Larry Csonka.

Late Kick: The ACC has underachieved as a conference Stream of NCAA Football (cbssports.com; podcast; Late Kick)

In this excerpt from Late Kick Live, Josh goes in depth as to why he believes that the ACC has not reached the level of play in the past decade that is expected of it.

Does the Big 12 Smell Blood in the Water with the ACC? (heartlandsports.com; Duke)

It’s been almost a half-century since the hit movie Jaws was released. It truly is one of Steven Spielberg’s timeless classics. For those who live under a rock, Jaws is a movie about a killer great white shark in a small beach town in Massachusetts.

Call me crazy, but when I think about what is going on in the ACC, it reminds me a little bit of the classic hit movie from 1975. Hear me out: the Atlantic Coast Conference would be the small beach town of Amity Island. But instead of one killer great white shark, the ACC is actually facing two of them with the SEC and Big Ten.

I say this because our own Pete Mundo said on the Heartland College Sports YouTube channel that “Right now, the sharks are circling. Brett Yormark, the athletic directors, the presidents, everybody is circling. They smell the blood in the water.”

Pete is right. The ACC appears to be shark food right now, and the Big 12 could potentially benefit from all this. What is important for the conference is that they keep the mindset of a shark.

In a recent interview with John Kurtz (who does great work, by the way), Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor said, “As a conference, we need to stay aggressive, and that’s what Brett has done from the minute he got here.”

Taylor isn’t the only one who smells blood either. Recently College Football Media superstar Josh Pate also has said some interesting things about the ACC as well. Typically, Pate isn’t one to break news because he is usually on the reactionary side.

First Look: A popular diner slinging frittatas by day, a ghost kitchen smashing wagyu burgers by night (PS; Miller)

The tiny roadside shack that’s been churning out the largest breakfasts in Syracuse for the past 40 years is going gourmet.

Well, more or less.

We can still start our day with a 6-pound frittata and a side of footlong pancakes at Mother’s Cupboard, but now we’re able to end our evening with farm-to-restaurant wagyu beef cooked on the same griddle that’s been here since 1940.

Pete Greene, the co-owner of this James Street diner on the easternmost edge of the city, just opened a ghost kitchen here with longtime friend Ryan MacCammon. Get Smashed is a digital-only restaurant that serves customers through food-delivery apps such as DoorDash, GrubHub or Uber Eats. In other words, we can’t eat at the counter 3 feet from the guy cooking our food.

Get Smashed offers a minuscule menu built around a cheeseburger. Not just any cheeseburger, mind you. These are smash burgers made from wagyu beef, the Cadillac of red meats.

“We kept it simple, but we’re indulging our taste buds,” Pete said.

This Eastwood restaurant within a restaurant pushes out food only on Friday and Saturday nights. They started with a soft opening three weeks ago to test the two-man workflow. It went well, and it was better the following week. On their sixth night of business (last Saturday), orders came and went seamlessly.

Fingerlakes Drive-In to reopen despite ongoing dispute with Cayuga Nation (PS; $; Herbert)
New York state’s oldest operating drive-in movie theater is finally opening for the 2024 season despite an ongoing legal dispute.

The Fingerlakes Drive-In will reopen Friday, June 28, for a double-feature all weekend. The new family movie “If” will be shown at 9 p.m. followed by “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” at 10:45 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

The open-air theater’s entrance was closed off earlier this year by a concrete blockade put up by Cayuga Nation. The Cayugas sued after buying 40.1 acres of land, which the Nation says includes some of the drive-in’s parking lots and a portion of its movie screen.

Fingerlakes Drive-In owner Paul Meyer said the blocks have been moved so the theater could open to customers, though the dispute has not been resolved. A court hearing was held two weeks ago but the judge has not yet ruled in the case, Meyer said.

Representatives for Cayuga Nation did not immediately respond to a syracuse.com request for comment.

The Cayugas paid $720,000 in January 2023 for the land at 1044 Clark Street Road, according to county records.

Located nearby at 1064 Clark Street Rd. in Aurelius, the Fingerlakes Drive-In is the closest drive-in to Syracuse. The theater has operated since 1947, outlasting thousands of other drive-ins across the U.S.

Other drive-in movie theaters in Upstate New York opened as early as April this year. The Midway Drive-In, located on State Route 48 “midway” between Fulton and Oswego, delayed its summer start to June 14 after owner “Little” John Nagelschmidt Jr., suffered a medical emergency.
