Welcome to Canada Day!

Canada Day celebrates the country's movement to self-government. On July 1, 1867, Canada became a self-governing Dominion of Great Britain, after the passage of the British North America Act. It also became a federation with four provinces: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec. These provinces were made from the British colonies of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and the Province of Canada (previously Upper Canada and Lower Canada). The Act allowed for other provinces and territories to join the country in the future. Indeed, more land was added, and Canada now consists of ten provinces and three territories.

On June 20, 1868, the Governor General said the anniversary of Canada becoming a Dominion should be celebrated. It became a statutory holiday in 1879 and was known as Dominion Day at the time. The first official celebrations weren't held until 1917, on the Dominion's fiftieth anniversary. It began being celebrated more frequently after World War II, and even more so after the 100th anniversary in 1967. It began being called Canada Day by celebrants and has been officially known as Canada Day since 1983. This was stipulated by the Canada Act of 1982. Canada also became a fully independent country with this act, no longer being under the dominion of Great Britain.

Syracuse lands speedy 2025 three-star wide receiver Gabe Daniels (orangefizz.net; Burstein)

In the ever-expanding 2025 class for Syracuse football, the Orange grabbed some wide receiver depth yesterday with the commitment of three-star wide receiver Gabe Daniels. The Georgia native becomes Syracuse’s third receiver commit in the 2024 class, joining Darien Williams and Julian McFadden.

It’s the latest recruiting win for Syracuse over other Power Four competitive teams. This time the top three for Daniels consisted of Syracuse, fellow ACC school NC State and Kansas.

Daniels’ commitment comes just about a month after he visited Syracuse May 31 to June 2. He received an offer from Syracuse on March 8, one of over 20 Division One offers that Daniels had.

One of the big things that a wide receiver needs is speed, and to say Daniels is fast would be an understatement. Just last month he won a state title in the 200 meter dash. He has run a 10.5 100 meter dash and 21.2 200 meter dash.

3-star athlete Gabe Daniels chooses Syracuse football over conference foe and other Power 4 team (PS; $; Leiker)

Syracuse football has gained a multi-positional new member for its Class of 2025.

Gabe Daniels, a 3-star from Norcross, Georgia, committed to Syracuse on Saturday night on an Instagram live, choosing the Orange over N.C. State and Kansas.

He made official visits to both Syracuse and Kansas. Though he had a visit scheduled to N.C. State, Daniels did not end up making it.

Daniels has played both wide receiver and cornerback and could play either at SU.

In his junior season at Greater Atlanta Christian School, Daniels made 31 catches for 531 yards and five touchdowns, according to the team’s MaxPreps page.

Daniels also runs track. He won the 200-meter at the GHSA 5A State Championship in May, running a time of 21.36 seconds, according to results on Athletic Net. He also placed third in the 100m with a time of 10.74 seconds.

A few coaches and family members spoke before Daniels announced his decision.

“I don’t know where you get your speed from, ‘cause you don’t get it from me,” his dad joked.

The Orange lost two verbal commits Saturday morning over reported academic issues but its 2025 class still boasts the second-most members in the country with 26 after Daniels’ addition.

The class is ranked No. 25 in the country per the 247Sports Composite. The high number of commitments in the class weighs into that ranking.

Syracuse Football: 3-star athlete Gabe Daniels commits - 'I believe in the Franchise' (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football head coach Fran Brown and his top-flight staff continue to bolster their already strong 2025 recruiting cycle, as three-star athlete Gabe Daniels from Georgia announced via his X page on Saturday night that he had verbally committed to the 'Cuse.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Daniels, who also runs track, primarily played wide receiver as a junior but also suits up at cornerback, according to recruiting services. He is a standout rising senior at the Greater Atlanta Christian School in Norcross, Ga.

Daniels took an official visit to the Hill from May 31 to June 2. In early May, he disclosed a top three of Syracuse football, N.C. State and Kansas. Top 247Sports analyst Mike McAllister noted that Daniels ultimately picked the Orange over the Jayhawks.

Syracuse football in final 4 for 3-star athlete announcing commitment Monday afternoon (PS; $; Leiker)

A three-star athlete who could become Syracuse football’s highest-ranked Class of 2025 member is announcing his commitment Monday.

Matthew Outten is choosing between Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Maryland and Penn State at 3 p.m. Monday, he announced on his social media Sunday. He made visits to all four programs, starting with the Orange on May 31.

Crystal ball predictions from 247Sports have Outten landing with the Hokies.

Outten, who plays both wide receiver and defensive back, is the No. 415 prospect in the country according to the 247Sports Composite. Currently, the highest-ranked member of SU’s 2025 class is Christian Brothers Academy wide receiver Darien Williams, who is No. 463.

Outten is also the No. 20 prospect with the athlete designation in the country and the No. 13 player from Virginia. He is a 4-star by 247Sports’ individual metric and ESPN’s metric.

Outten (6-foot, 200 pounds) is from Portsmouth, Virginia, and plays at I.C. Norcom. As a junior, Outten carried the ball 11 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns, and he caught 22 passes for 480 yards and six touchdowns according to the team’s MaxPreps page.

On defense, he had 22 tackles, six tackles for loss and a blocked punt.

As many of Syracuse’s recruited players do, Outten also runs the 100-meter and 200m for his track team.

The Orange had movement in its 2025 class over the weekend but remains the No. 25 class in the country per the 247Sports Composite with 26 commitments. It added two-way 3-star Gabe Daniels from Georgia but lost its only 4-star prospect, Sharlandiin Strange, and a local product.

Sharlandiin Strange & Amari Colon no longer committed to Syracuse football (247sports.com; McAllister)

Syracuse football is down two commits as both Sharlandiin Strange and Amari Colon are no longer part of the class, sources told CuseNation.com. The sources indicated both may go the junior college route. Both are three star prospects. Strange is an edge from Pennsylvania who was Syracuse's first commit this cycle. Colon is a defensive back from Western New York who committed in May.

Syracuse's 2025 class is now 25 players deep with the loss of Strange and Colon. The Orange received many of those commitments before and during spring ball, much earlier than has been the norm. The Orange has recruited nationally in the 2025 cycle, but has put a focus on the Northeast. Of Syracuse's 25 commitments, 16 are from the Northeast with eight in New York, two in Pennsylvania, three in New Jersey, two in Connecticut and one in Massachusetts. Three more are from the DMV (Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia) region, two are in Texas, one in Georgia, two in Florida and now one from Canada.

Syracuse football loses 4-star edge rusher, top recruit in 2025 class (report) (PS; Carlson)

Syracuse football’s top-ranked recruit in its Class of 2025 is no longer part of the recruiting class, according to a report from Mike McAllister of the recruiting website 247 Sports.

Four-star defensive end Sharlandiin Strange and three-star recruit Amari Colon are no longer committed, according to McAllister. He cited anonymous sources.

Greg Hopkins, who coaches Colon in both high school and in the Rochester-based Changing the Community football program, confirmed that Colon is no longer part of the recruiting class. He said Colon would not be eligible to play Division I football in 2025 because of an NCAA rule involving high school academic requirements.

Strange was the only four-star recruit committed to Syracuse in the Class of 2025 and was the first player to commit to the Orange in the class. He is an edge rusher for Cheltenham High School in Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania.

Syracuse Football: On3 NIL Valuations of top-5 'Cuse players, led by QB Kyle McCord (itlh; Adler)

Quarterback Kyle McCord, the four-star transfer from Ohio State who will spend his senior season with Syracuse football, currently has the highest On3 NIL Valuation among Orange players.

This should come as no surprise. McCord, who was a five-star prep recruit from New Jersey, put forth a solid 2023 term for the Buckeyes and was rated as one of the top quarterbacks in the transfer portal this off-season.

I'll list below the other Syracuse football players in the top five on the team as it pertains to their On3 NIL Valuations, but first, a little context. Per the On3 Web site, this valuation "sets high school and college athletes’ projected annual value (PAV) by combining Roster Value and NIL (name, image and likeness)."

Leaders of On3, a fast-growing national media outlet and recruiting service, say their On3 NIL Valuation is a proprietary algorithm that "establishes the overall NIL market and projected 12-month growth rate for an Athlete by measuring two categories: Roster Value and NIL."

This valuation can ebb and flow from week to week, and the data I'm including here was as of Thursday evening when I wrote this article.

The On3 NIL Valuations of the Syracuse football players in the top five on the squad.

TNIAAM Reacts: Syracuse football fans want the 90s back (TNIAAM; Wall)

This week we asked Syracuse Orange fans about football uniforms and alums in the NBA next season. Let’s check out the results:

It was a pretty close vote, but more of you want to see the Orange go back to the uniform look from the 90s. Plain orange helmets and numbers on the pants are your vibe. Would the uniform bring back the on-field success from that era?

Maybe we should ask if people would prefer Syracuse to keep the current look or go full-Oregon with different combinations each week...

Once again no Syracuse men’s basketball players were selected in the NBA Draft, and most of you expect the number of alums who play in the 24-25 NBA season to decrease. My take is that most of you expect that only Jerami Grant and Oshae Brissett will see action and that’s not making Buddy Boeheim and Cole Swider feel appreciated.

Welcome Southern Methodist University! (RX; HM)

Welcome Southern Methodist University!

Today, the ACC officially welcomes SMU!

Southern Methodist University (SMU) officially joins the ACC as a full member with full voting rights effective today, July 1, 2024. The addition of SMU strengthens the ACC academically, athletically and financially as well as extending the conference into Texas.

Why this is good for the ACC

1. ESPN will pay the ACC approximately $30 million/year for the addition of SMU (pro rata), which will be redistributed to existing 15 ACC schools for the next 9 years (around $2M each).
2. The ACC will have a much larger presence in Texas now that an additional 4 conference games and up to 4 more non-conference games will be played in Dallas every year. Add SMU to the existing tie-in with the Sun Bowl in El Paso and the First Responder Bowl in Dallas and that's up to 10 ACC football games per year in the Lone Star State.

Why this is good for SMU

1. Despite the buy-in period, the Mustangs will actually be making more money that they did in the American Athletic Conference. That's mainly because SMU is expected to receive around $9 million annually from the ACC's non-media revenue. Then, beginning in 2025, they'll get another $6 million per year from the new CFP contract.
2. SMU will be back at the "big boy table". The Mustangs were once a national championship contender in the old SouthWest Conference (now defunct), but went two years without football when the NCAA imposed the "death penalty" to the football program. Since then, the Mustangs have had to crawl their way back up the ladder, now achieving the "power conference" level once again.

Welcome, Mustangs!

ACC's Best Returning Quarterbacks (lastwordonsports.com; Siracusa)

We continue our nationwide swing to highlight the best-returning players by conference. Today we are looking at the ACC’s best returning quarterbacks.

To take a moment to review the criteria, the player must be returning within the conference. They can be a transfer player who makes the list if they stayed within the conference. But if they transferred from outside of the ACC into the conference, we are not considering them. That means you are not going to see Cam Ward, Kyle McCord, Grayson McCall, D.J. Uiagalelei, or Hank Bachmeier in here.

We did include players from Stanford, Cal, and SMU. The move to the ACC was not their decision, so we gave our writers some wiggle room. So with that, here are our best returning ACC quarterbacks:

4; Kyron Drones-VA Tech

Drones came to the Hokies via the transfer portal before the 2023 season. He spent two years at Baylor, having played in all of seven games during that span. But he shined in Blacksburg in 2023. He stepped in when starter Grant Wells was hurt in the first month of the season. He threw for 2,085 yards and rushed for another 818. He also accounted for 22 touchdowns, (17 passing and five rushing). Once he became the starter in mid-September, he only had one poor performance, (69 passing yards and no touchdowns in a 31-point loss to Louisville).

There is no question he goes into Fall camp this year as the starter, with big potential.

3; Haynes King-Georgia Tech

King spent three years at Texas A&M before moving to GA Tech in time for the 2023 season. Despite being a four-star prospect out of high school in Texas, he saw limited action in College Station in his three years there. He played in 10 games total and only attempted 24 passes total in his first two seasons.

But he moved to Atlanta and showed all of his on-field traits. In 2023, King threw for 2,842 yards with a 61.6 completion percentage. He added 737 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. He threw for 27 touchdowns, but the 16 interceptions are a problem that will necessitate work on his reads, and not relying so heavily on arm talent alone.

2; Cade Klubnik-Clemson

We toyed with moving Klubnik higher up the list, and also with moving him down the list. That’s the thing with this second-year starter…where does he belong? We are still waiting for the quarterback who Tigers fans saw so much promise in back in 2022 that they were holding the virtual door open for D.J. Uiagalelei to leave.

What Clemson got in 2023 was a quarterback who has good numbers on the surface, as long as you just stay on the surface. He threw for a tick over 2,800 yards on a 64% completion clip. The 19 touchdown passes to nine interception ratio was less than ideal.

He was hampered by not having the elite-level receivers around him that the three quarterbacks prior to him were blessed with. Dabo Swinney’s insistence on not using the transfer portal meant the Tigers did not replenish in the skill position areas the way other schools did.

And maybe that is the reason the “below-the-surface-stats” looked the way they did for Klubnik. There was no deep passing game in the Clemson arsenal in 2023. Klubnik had the fewest passing yards per attempt than any other starting quarterback in the ACC, (6.3). He also had only six touchdown passes in the last six games of the season. And even at that, there was a real lack of balance. He had four of those six in one game against Georgia Tech. And he had three games in that last month-and-a-half with zero touchdown passes.

Still, we have seen Klubnik’s ability. And we think a second year under Garrett Riley’s tutelage will provide enough results for us to put him as the #2 returning quarterback.

1; Preston Stone-SMU

This will be news to long-time ACC fans because few of them have seen Stone play. But we have been following him since he signed years ago with SMU under former head coach Sonny Dykes. The now-TCU coach was effusive in his praise of Stone’s potential.

The four-star recruit out of Dallas only played in nine games in 2021-2022. And he only attempted 55 passes over those two seasons.

But then he got the starting job in 2023 and showed why head coach Rhett Lashlee was just as eager to see him on the field as Dykes had previously been. He threw for 3,197 yards to go with 28 touchdowns against just six interceptions. As SMU went 10-2 on the regular season, the only game in which he did not have a touchdown pass was in a loss to TCU. He also had just one interception over the last seven games of the regular season.

All of that was good enough to get him a 91.0 passing grade from PFF, putting him third in the country in that stat.

With a full year as a starter on his resume now, and with plenty of skill position talent at his disposal for the Mustangs, we are going to assume a big year ahead for Stone.

Ranking top five college football stadiums in ACC after conference expansion (clutchpoints.com; Shoemaker)

With the never-ending conference expansion and realignment ongoing, we never know how long we have with what's left of the days of old in college football. Though conferences like the SEC and Big Ten seem to be fully intact and thriving, ones like the ACC have more uncertainty. However, even if the conference were to become extinct tomorrow (it won't), it still has some of the best places to play in the sport.

It used to be that some of the best and most must-see stadiums in college football were scattered throughout every conference, and better yet, localized to a specific region. That's not quite the case any longer, making lists like the one here, ranking the top five ACC stadiums, a little tougher. Thankfully, the ACC hasn't experienced any major loss yet by losing some of their top schools and their venues, though many fear that will soon be on the way.

They were actually able to make additions. They picked up some of the Pac-12 scraps in Cal and Stanford, and SMU from the AAC conference. Now, does that mean any of those three made this list?

Let's rank the top five ACC stadiums after conference expansion.

5. North Carolina Tar Heels – Kenan Memorial Stadium

Nestled among pine trees, Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, offers one of the most picturesque settings in college football. Opened in 1927, the stadium blends classic charm with modern amenities, making it a beloved venue for Tar Heels fans. With a seating capacity of over 50,000, Kenan provides an intimate yet electrifying atmosphere, especially when the Tar Heels face off against ACC rivals. Making a top five for this list wasn't exactly easy—a top three? Sure. But it got a little tougher with the last two. If this were basketball arenas, it would be much easier, yet the Tar Heels' Kenan Memorial Stadium sneaks into this list.

4. NC State Wolfpack – Carter-Finley Stadium

Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, North Carolina, is home to the NC State Wolfpack. Known for its passionate and boisterous fanbase, the stadium creates an intimidating environment for visiting teams. Opened in 1966, Carter-Finley has undergone numerous renovations to enhance the fan experience and now boasts a capacity of over 58,000. Despite often being overlooked, NC State and their fans display intense passion for their team, creating one of the most electric atmospheres in college football. Additionally, the Wolfpack have won eight or more games in six out of their last seven seasons, proving their consistent competitiveness. The stadium's unique architecture and enthusiastic crowd make it a top-tier venue in the ACC.

3. Florida State Seminoles – Doak S. Campbell Stadium

Doak S. Campbell Stadium, located in Tallahassee, Florida, is one of the most iconic stadiums in college football. Home to the Florida State Seminoles, Doak Campbell, opened in 1950, can accommodate over 79,000 fans. The stadium is renowned for its intimidating atmosphere, especially during night games, and the tradition of Chief Osceola and Renegade's flaming spear pre-game ritual adds to its mystique. There's nothing better than when Florida State football meets up against in-state rivals Miami, Florida, or in a top-ranked matchup, as the stadium comes alive with unmatched energy and passion. The passionate Seminole fanbase ensures a raucous game-day experience, making Doak Campbell one of the premier venues in the ACC.

2. Virginia Tech Hokies – Lane Stadium

You can't talk about top ranked ACC stadiums and not include Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia on your list. It is famed for its electric atmosphere and the spine-tingling “Enter Sandman” entrance that is truly a sight to see. Opened in 1965, Lane Stadium has a seating capacity of over 66,000 and is home to the Virginia Tech Hokies. Though Lane Stadium may not have the results it once did—going 2-10 against top 25 teams in the past decade, according to The Athletic's Bruce Feldman—it still has the ability to be intimidating. The stadium's elevation and the fervor of Hokie Nation make it one of the toughest places to play in the ACC. The combination of enthusiastic fans, unique traditions, and the scenic backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains solidifies Lane Stadium's spot near the top of the list.

1. Clemson Tigers – Memorial Stadium

Ranking in at No. 1 on the best stadiums in the ACC is Memorial Stadium, also known as “Death Valley,” in Clemson, South Carolina.

NC trend: Tough decisions face the 4 N.C. schools that built the ACC. - Business North Carolina (businessnc.com; Mildenberg)

What’s ahead for North Carolina’s four Atlantic Coast Conference members is a favorite chatter topic for sports-obsessed alumni and leadership. Conventional wisdom is that the ACC is a likely loser in conference realignment because its three strongest football programs — Clemson, Florida State and UNC Chapel Hill — may bolt if they can maneuver through a legal thicket that has kept them in the fold so far.
Here’s a best-guess, status report on the four N.C. ACC members as conference realignment unfolds, based on media reports and interviews with about a dozen knowledgeable observers who agreed to talk provided they were not identified.
Right now, no one knows what will happen, because power is distributed widely among executives at TV powerhouses Disney, Fox and Comcast; university officials and boosters; coaches; and politicians. But fast, furious change is occurring in college sports, reflected in the May settlement that requires NCAA members to pay former athletes $2.8 billion in back damages and share as much as about $20 million a year per school directly with their athletes.

Georgia Tech Football Receives New Prediction For Their Season Win Total (SI; Caudell)

The 2024 college football season is just eight weeks away and it kicks off with a huge game between Georgia Tech and Florida State in Dublin, Ireland. That game could have implications in the ACC title race and the Yellow Jackets are going to be out to prove that they are one of the darkhorse contenders in the ACC while the Seminoles are going to be trying to defend their ACC title with an early win.

It is no secret that Georgia Tech is going to be playing one of the toughest schedules in the country and it starts with Florida State. The win total for the Yellow Jackets is set at 5.5 wins and yesterday, CBS Sports College Football Analyst Chip Patterson made his predictions for every win total in the ACC and he is taking the under for Georgia Tech:

Wins: Georgia State, at Syracuse, VMI, Duke, at North Carolina
Losses: Florida State, at Louisville, Notre Dame, at Virginia Tech, Miami, NC State, at Georgia

Analysis: "Coach Brent Key deserves a ton of credit for the way the Yellow Jackets battled last season, finishing as one of just five teams in the ACC with a winning record in conference play (5-3). And since there are a ton of pieces back for 2024 (especially on offense), the notion should be that Georgia Tech is poised for yet another step forward. But to actually return to the postseason will require success in more than half of Georgia Tech's toss-up games, some of which are on the road. Under 5.5 wins (-180)"

MBB: Potential 2025 NBA Lottery Picks

From AP News:

Duke’s Flagg, Rutgers’ freshman duo headline list of potential 2025 NBA lottery prospects

Here’s an early list of potential lottery prospects for 2025:

1. Cooper Flagg, Duke

The 6-foot-9, 205-pound forward is the nation’s top-ranked recruit who picked Duke over UConn in October after reclassifying from the 2025 class. He’s got an all-around skillset with elite potential offensively and defensively. Offensively he can handle the ball like a guard and can finish inside from multiple angles. He’s a transition weapon who runs the floor well and is an excellent passer. He has also shown elite potential as a rangy shot blocker.

7. Khaman Maluach, Duke

There’s high-end potential with the 7-2, 250-pound South Sudanese center from the NBA Academy Africa. He’s still developing after playing the sport for only the past five years, but he runs the floor well, protects the rim, has shown shooting touch to go with a 7-5 wingspan.

9. Jalil Bethea, Miami

The 6-4, 170-pound guard scores off the dribble, hits from deep and showed off his athleticism by winning the dunk contest that was part of the McDonald’s All-American game festivities.

Others to watch:

—Isaiah Evans: The 6-6 wing is a McDonald’s All-American and skilled scorer headed to Duke as part of the nation’s No. 1-ranked recruiting class.
—Donnie Freeman: The incoming Syracuse freshman has a skilled offensive game and shooting touch, packaged in a 6-9, 190-pound frame with inside-out potential.

This marks the 22nd consecutive year that four or more ACC schools placed among the top 30 in the final LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup standings. North Carolina and Virginia have ranked among the top 30 nationally in each of the 30 years the Directors’ Cup has been conducted.
“The final 2023-24 LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup standings once again highlight the incredible achievements of our student-athletes, coaches and programs,” stated ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. “Our conference once again proved its place as a premier conference with unparalleled athletic success, and we look forward to building on this momentum as we approach the new academic year.”
For the third straight year, the ACC won seven or more national titles with seven in 2023-24, the second-most among all conferences. The seven titles follow a league record of nine NCAA titles from last year in 2022-23.
Overall, the 23 national titles in league-sponsored sports over the past three years are the most of all conferences.
In the league’s 71-year history, ACC institutions have captured 189 team national championships and 428 individual NCAA titles, including 22 during the most recent academic year (16 women’s, six men’s).
Virginia led all ACC schools with a fifth-place finish, led by a fourth consecutive NCAA women’s swimming and diving championship and top-five finishes in men’s lacrosse, men’s golf, men’s tennis and women’s tennis.
North Carolina joined the Cavaliers among the top 10 in seventh place, followed by Notre Dame (10th), Florida State (12th), Duke (17th) and NC State (21st). The ACC’s six schools among this year’s top 25 are the second-most of any conference.
Clemson (31st), Syracuse (44th), Louisville (49th) and Virginia Tech (50th) give the ACC 10 institutions among the top 50 and were followed by Wake Forest (56th), Miami (67th), Boston College (68th), Georgia Tech (74th) and Pitt (80th).

The History of the Atlantic Coast Conference: College Sports' East Coast Nerds

One of the most historically significant conferences in NCAA history lies along the eastern coast of the United States. But with new additions in California and Texas rendering the "Atlantic Coast" name of the conference a little funny-looking, if not moot, the history of this conference---once based in the heart of Greensboro, North Carolina---becomes one to examine in the modern lens.
From bowl bans in the SoCon to the Old Gray Fox to high school kids watching the ACC basketball tournament during class, the ACC's been through a lot. But the land of academics and basketball has a lot more to the story than what meets the eye.
Come along with me as I take a short walk down the ACC's storied history, focusing on the major moves of the conference as well as the championships and big names that made it who it's perceived to be today.

There Might be a Surprise or 2 in ACC Championship Game (theclemsoninsider.com; Vandervort)

We are nine weeks away from the first full Saturday in College Football, and just three weeks from Monday, will be the ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte.

Football season is right around the corner, and this is a perfect time for me to list who I think will play and contend for an ACC Championship this year. Of course, there will be your usual contenders, such as Clemson and Florida State. However, I do feel like there will be a surprise contender, or dark horse, if you will, that no one is talking about.

I know this is a Clemson website so you might think there is a little more orange on my glasses than any other color. However, as a trained journalist, I proud myself on being as objective as possible in all of my work and I feel most of you would agree with that assumption.

I have gone over every team’s roster, as we know it today. I have gone through every schedule. Below is how I see the ACC stacking up this season, going from No. 17 to No. 1. Do not forget, the top two teams in the standings will meet in the ACC Championship Game in Charlotte on Dec. 7.

RNKTeamACCOverallMy Call
17.Duke0-83-9Duke has a new coach, new quarterback and a new defense. I think it will be a long year in Durham.
16.Stanford2-64-8The Cardinal will be a better team than last year, but being in a new conference does not help. There will still be some growing pains under second-year coach Troy Taylor.
15.Virginia2-65-7Tony Elliott’s Cavs continue to show slow improvement and who knows, maybe they will steal a couple of games after losing so many close games last season.
14.Syracuse3-57-5An easy non-conference schedule and not having to play Clemson or Florida State should help the Orange become bowl eligible in Fran Brown’s first year as head coach.
13.Pittsburgh3-57-5Pat Narduzzi has gone from ball-control, running the football and playing sound defense, to a spread no-huddle offense under new OC Kade Bell. It is either going to work or fail, which will determine Narduzzi’s stay in the Steel City.
12.Wake Forest3-56-6Remember when Wake Forest was winning 9 or 10 games and playing for an ACC Championship? Those days are gone. However, the Demon Deacons will improve on last year’s 1-7 conference mark.
11.Boston College3-55-7The Eagles return 12 players from last year’s 7-win team. Bill O’Brien brings a lot of experience to the head coaching position, but is he enough to get past Missouri and Michigan State in the non-conference schedule and FSU, Virginia Tech, Louisville and UNC in ACC play?
10.Miami4-47-5Yes, Miami has Cam Ward at QB and Damien Martinez at RB and Xavier Restrepo at WR. However, I do not trust the Hurricanes. I have been burned too many times, including last season. I am not falling for it again. The ‘Canes need to go prove they are worthy of challenging for an ACC title.
9.Georgia Tech4-46-6I have Tech No. 9, but I would not be surprised if they finish the season higher in the ACC standings. Brent Key does not have the most talented roster, but he gets everything out of them. They play hard for him, they believe in him and with a team that has 8 starters back on offense, that could lead to a couple of more wins.
8.California4-47-5Cal is an interesting team. The Bears return 15 starters from last year’s bowl team. They can compete in the ACC and are an upset or two from finding itself in the top 5 of the conference.
7.Louisville5-37-5Louisville lost a lot of offensive power, which it replaced by using the transfer portal. Seven starters are back on what was a pretty good defense. However, the schedule this season is more challenging than last year’s. Look for the Cardinals to drop after last year’s ACC Championship Game appearance.
6.NC State5-38-4Dave Doeren hit the transfer portal hard in the off-season. The ‘Pack returns just 8 starters from last year’s 9-win team. Doeren brought in former Coastal QB Grayson McCall to run the offense, but replacing LB Payton Wilson on defense will be difficult to do.
5.Florida State5-38-4FSU has talent, especially on defense. However, leadership is an issue and with so many transfer portal players. I don’t know if there is enough leadership to get them back to the ACC title game. Mike Norvell went and got DJ Uiagalelei to run his offense, but I don’t see enough experience skill players around him to lift Uiagalelei’s confidence.
4.Virginia Tech5-39-3The Hokies return 19 starters from last year’s 7-win team that won five of its last seven games. VT’s toughest games are at Miami (Sept. 27) and vs. Clemson (Nov. 9). There is a chance this could be a special season in Blacksburg.
3.North Carolina6-29-3UNC has a chance to be this year’s Louisville. Granted the Tar Heels have to replace Drake Maye at QB, but the schedule is relatively easy, and it could put the Tar Heels back in the ACC Championship Game.
2.SMU7-110-2The Mustangs are the team no one is talking about. However, Rhett Lashlee’s squad returns 14 starters from last year’s 11-3 team that went 8-0 in the AAC and won the conference championship. SMU hosts FSU on Sept. 28 in what is being built up as the biggest game the program has hosted in the last 40 years. It then visits Louisville the following week. After that, the rest of the conference schedule is a cakewalk.
1.Clemson7-110-2I do not trust Cade Klubnik and the offense enough to say the Tigers can go through the ACC season undefeated. But Clemson still has the best overall roster in the ACC and the schedule is favorable enough to get Clemson back to Charlotte. The Tigers have tough conference games at FSU (Oct. 5) and at Virginia Tech (Nov.9).

From low-snow to heat waves, this year has been the warmest ever recorded in Syracuse (PS; $; Coin)

From a record-warm February to an unprecedented June heat wave, 2024 has so far been the warmest ever recorded in Syracuse.

For the first half of the year, the average temperature in Syracuse has been an extraordinary 6 degrees above normal. And the rest of the summer is expected to continue that trend.

Every month in 2024 has been abnormally warm. February 2024 was the warmest February ever recorded, at 9 degrees above normal. May 2024 just missed the record for the month by a tenth of a degree. And thanks to five consecutive days of 90 degrees, June 2024 ranks as the fourth-warmest month of June.

The first six months of 2024 continues a troubling trend: Of the 20 warmest such periods on record, 10 have occurred since 1998. And the warmth in the first half of this year follows Syracuse’s third-warmest full year on record in 2023.

Several factors are at play this year, including the stubborn position of the jet stream and a strong El Nino in the Pacific Ocean. Lurking in the background is human-caused climate change.

“Climate change is definitely playing a role,” said Jessica Spaccio, a climatologist at the Northeast Regional Climate Center. “When I look at the trend for the first six months of the year, the trendline is going up.”

The jet stream, a ribbon of air high in the atmosphere, also played a major role in the warm year.

“The location of the jet stream determines whether you’re going to be warm or cold,” said Tom Kines, a meteorologist with private forecasting company Accuweather. “We’ve had to deal with the jet stream to the north of us, which has prevented the cold air from coming in and allowed the warm air from the south to get up in our neck of the woods.”

During the winter, a strong El Nino dominated the weather patterns in the northern tier of the U.S., including Upstate New York. El Nino, an abnormal warming of the eastern Pacific Ocean, tends to bring warm winters with less snow and more rain, like the one we just had.

Syracuse had just 50.5 inches of snow from January to April, compared to a normal of 81 inches during that period. Yet total precipitation has been slightly above normal as what would have fallen as snow instead came down as rain.

That lack of cold and snow kicked off a feedback loop, Kines said. When there’s snow on the ground and the Great Lakes are frozen, air moving in from Canada picks up the cold and brings it our way. When the Canadian air blows across bare ground and open water, there’s less cold air to pick up, he explained.

It’s not only the average temperature -- the sum of daily highs and lows divided by the number of days -- that set a record this year, Spaccio noted. The average low temperature in Syracuse so far in 2024 is 1.5 degrees higher than the previous record, set in the Dust Bowl year of 1933.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit play true tortured poetry at Beak & Skiff (review, photos) (PS; McCarthy)

Jason Isbell brought his tortured poetry and gallows humor to the apple orchards of Beak & Skiff on Saturday night.

Isbell and his band, the 400 Unit, put on a nearly two-hour set of sobering songs for a solid crowd that frequently joined in on singing the haunting lyrics set to beautiful melodies. Isbell took the stage shortly after 7:15 p.m., saying “I think the weather’s gonna hold out for us, let’s keep our fingers crossed.” After ceaseless showers throughout the day, blue skies did poke out for the show, setting the stage for a perfect summer night.

Isbell’s set featured many tracks from the band’s 2023 album “Weathervanes,” many of which contend directly with the darker sides of this American life. They began with “When We Were Close,” a song about Isbell’s old friend Justin Townes Earle, who died from an accidental drug overdose in 2020. Next came “Save the World,” replete with references to the deadly Uvalde school shooting: “And when you said the cops just let ‘em die/ I heard the shaking in your voice.”

The following song, “King Of Oklahoma,” describes a plot to steal copper from a worksite to fuel a drug habit, a truly bleak song that nonetheless had fans joining in the chorus and ended with an impressive guitar solo from Isbell himself.

These are the lyrics that have elevated Isbell to his status as one of America’s actual tortured poets, a writer who not only describes his own addiction and path to sobriety, but also has an empathetic approach that allows him to detail other challenges facing people throughout the country. Isbell is well aware of his penchant for dark lyrics, and often takes the edge off with a little gallows humor.

“What rhymes with orchard, Sadler?” Isbell asked bandmate Sadler Vaden. “Torture, that’s the only thing that’ll do it. Torture, orchard. Perfect for a Jason Isbell song. But this isn’t torture — this is great!”

Later on, Isbell said he’d buy anything from Beak & Skiff, even “assisted suicide, whatever, I know it’d be the best version.” This and other jokes demonstrated the perspective of one who laughs to keep from crying.

Clemson and FSU are the 2 best ACC football teams on paper, but the games aren't played on paper... I look for at least one of them NOT to be in the ACC CG, but instead a "surprise" team (I nominate my Hokies, but some of you here may have other ideas).

Since they play each other one will have a loss. Vt plays Clem as well. so VT controls whether Clemson can have a shot at getting there

I think ACC teams are going to find playing in the JMA Dome this season to be harder than they expected.

Brace for impact.

If we can just be avg or better team the Dome will be tough to play in. We were a bad team and gave Clemson fits. Lets get the crowd back more than once a yr by being a solid team.
