Welcome to National Hot Dog Day!

National Hot Dog Day was started by the North American Meat Institute in 1991 and began being promoted and organized by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council after they were created by the institute in 1994. The day coincides with the Annual Hot Dog Lunch at Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., which is also sponsored by the North American Meat Institute. The lunch, which has taken place for decades, is a large hot dog picnic attended by lawmakers, administration officials, and Capitol Hill staff. The goal of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council is for similar smaller events to be held around the country. Many national and local retailers have sponsored deals on the day. This holiday also takes place during National Hot Dog Month, which started in the 1950s.

Hot dogs gained in popularity in the United States in the early twentieth century, and are similar to frankfurters and wieners, which take their names from Frankfurt, Germany, and Vienna, Austria. In the United States, hot dogs were traditionally sold at hot dog stands and carts and were prominent in New York City, as well as Chicago. They have become a prominent part of American culture, and have been closely associated with baseball. Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest and the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile have also become cultural icons.

SU football’s biggest snub on preseason lists? ‘There should be no doubting Kyle’ (PS; $; Carlson)

The ACC will announce its preseason all-conference teams during the league’s ACC kickoff next week in Charlotte and, if they follow most other organizations, the Syracuse football team will receive modest representation.

The Orange has had a handful of players make the all-conference lists produced by various media organizations with Marlowe Wax and Oronde Gadsden II appearing most prominently.

Arguments might be made for a few others but Syracuse captain Justin Barron was especially dismayed at one particular omission -- quarterback Kyle McCord.

The pair are among the four that will represent the Orange in Charlotte next week where McCord’s decision to transfer from Ohio State to Syracuse and his lack of preseason accolades will almost certainly be among the prominent discussion points.

“I’m really upset with how awful that All-ACC list was preseason and how many guys were left off,” Barron said in June, shortly after Phil Steele’s preseason picks were made public. “There’s four teams? And our quarterback who won 12 games last year can’t get on one of them? Come on, dude.”

The release of Steele’s annual college football bible serves as a mile-marker for fans across the country each offseason, a signal that football season is mere months away. Steele wasn’t alone in omitting McCord from his preseason teams despite the fact that the quarterback threw for more than 3,000 yards last season.
So did familiar publications like Athlon and Lindy’s.

The level of Barron’s frustration, though, is an indication of just how much respect McCord has already built up among his new teammates.

Single-game tickets for Syracuse football’s 2024 season are now on sale (PS; $; Carlson)

Syracuse University has begun selling single-game tickets for all seven home games during the upcoming football season.

According to Ticketmaster the cheapest single-game ticket is currently for the UConn game on Nov. 23, with a price of just over $22.

Tickets for Syracuse’s season-opener against Ohio on Aug. 31 can currently be purchased for just over $25. That game, scheduled for 3:30 p.m., will be the first of the Fran Brown era.

Tickets for two other home games can currently be purchased for under $30. Those games are against Georgia Tech (Sept. 7) and Holy Cross (Sept. 28).

The three most expensive games of the season are expected to be marquee games against Virginia Tech (Nov. 2) and Miami (Nov. 30), along with the Orange’s first ACC game against new conference member Stanford (Sept. 20).

Both the Hurricanes and Hokies are viewed as potential contenders to reach the ACC championship games.

The cheapest single-game ticket for the game against the Virginia Tech on Nov. 2 is currently listed at just over $59, while the cheapest seat to watch the Orange face the Hurricanes on Nov. 30 is over $62.

In addition to single-game seats the school continues to sell season tickets. The cheapest season-tickets currently available on Ticketmaster cost $99 for seven games.

During the offseason the school is installing seats with chairbacks throughout the stadium. The project is expected to reduce seating capacity to between 42,000 and 43,000 fans.

Get to Know Your Orange Man: #11, WR Ta’Ron Haile (TNIAAM; Fowler)

It’s time to start preparing for the 2024 Syracuse Orange football season. We’re going through the roster to take a look at each Syracuse player as we get to know a lot of new faces to kick off the Fran Brown Era.

Up next is…

Name: Ta’Ron Haile

Position: WR

Year: Freshman

Height: 6’0”

Weight: 175 lbs.

Hometown: Millville, NJ

High school: Millville High School

2023 stats: Haile hauled in over 600 receiving yards as a senior at Millville, and more than 2,000 yards throughout his high school career.

2024 projections: In addition to his versatility on the football field, Haile is known for his track-like speed and jumping ability. At Millville he had personal bests of 11.35 seconds in the 100 meter and 22.57 seconds in the 200 meter dash - his best long jump is 21-5.25. The young wide receiver is a freak athlete, but considering the offensive weapons Syracuse has for this upcoming season, it’s likely Haile will make his impact on special teams.

Syracuse football among teams standing out to 5-star WR Calvin Russell, No. 5 prospect (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football continues to be mentioned by national analysts as one of the leading contenders for elite 2026 prospect Calvin Russell from Florida, who is a five-star wide receiver and the country's No. 5 overall prospect in this class per 247Sports.

Naturally, Russell's recruiting process could have a way to go, but as it currently stands, it does appear that the Orange staff is heavily in the mix for one of the top players in the rising high school junior class.

It's true that throughout his recruitment, the 6-foot-5, 190-pound Russell has amassed more than 40 offers, but in a recent article, and Yahoo Sports national recruiting director Adam Gorney wrote, "Four programs are standing out most to Russell with Syracuse, Florida State, Georgia and LSU making the biggest impression on him over this offseason."

That's some pretty select company for head coach Fran Brown and his staff to reside in as it pertains to Russell, whom the 'Cuse re-offered a scholarship to on January 20 of this year.

Syracuse football is in hot pursuit of 2026 five-star wide receiver Calvin Russell.

Russell is a standout at Miami Northwestern Senior High School. Gorney also notes in his story that Russell is a Miami Hurricanes legacy, and he "will visit Oregon at the end of July."

The roster screen shows the top 13 players in the team. In order, they are:

  • Oronde Gadsden: 91
  • Justin Barron: 89
  • Marlowe Wax: 88
  • LeQuint Allen: 86

Syracuse lands in-state target Jayden Mann (orangefizz.net; Burstein)

Recent recruiting wins for Fran Brown and Syracuse Football have come from across the region and across the country. But Thursday the Orange picked up another 2025 recruit, this time from in the confines of New York state.

Jayden Mann, a 6-4, 285 offensive tackle from the Bronx, committed to Syracuse last week. A 247sports composite three-star ranked as the 5th-best 2025 in New York, Mann becomes the 28th player to commit to Syracuse in the 2025 class.

The Orange beat out a variety of power conference schools for Mann. His other finalists were fellow ACC school Georgia Tech, Big Ten school Rutgers and West Virginia from the Big 12.

When it came down to making the big choice, Mann told 247sports that proximity to his hometown was a big factor.

“I just felt like Syracuse was at home, New York, staying at home,” Mann said to 247sports. He was down to Georgia Tech and Syracuse for his final pick.

So what makes Mann a good fit for the Orange. A look at his junior film from Cardinal Hayes shows one huge advantage – his size. While he’ll obviously face bigger competition at the Division One level, Mann’s physicality with a 6-4, 285 frame has been dominant at the prep level.

With Cardinal Hayes, he mainly played as a right tackle this past year, so it’s safe to assume that may be a top choice for Mann at SU. In his film, Mann always initiates early contact at the line of scrimmage, but also wasn’t scared to go upfield for big-time blocks.

There’s a chance he’ll be entering a crowded right tackle room. SU’s top two RTs this year are Da’Metrius Weatherspoon from Howard and David Wohlabaugh Jr., who missed most of last year with injury. Both are only just redshirt juniors.

Big Ten, SEC Unlikely To Add Florida State if ACC Survives (actionnetwork.,com; McMurphy)

Florida State likely will not have a spot in the Big Ten or SEC if it’s successful in leaving the ACC and the ACC stays intact, sources told Action Network.

If/when the Seminoles break free from the ACC, their top choices would be to join the Big Ten or SEC because of the huge difference in television media rights revenue, sources said.

However, there are multiple concerns about adding Florida State, sources said. Those reasons include the fact that it doesn’t make financial sense for either league, “there’s no appetite for more expansion” and FSU has shown “it’s not a good partner.”

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey was asked at Monday’s SEC Media Days how closely he was following the legal challenges by FSU and Clemson to exit the ACC.

“We’re focused on our 16. Period,” Sankey said. “I'm not going to guess about what happens next. We can certainly remain at 16 for a long, long time and be incredibly successful.”

Action Network contacted more than a dozen individuals, including university presidents, conference personnel, athletic directors, network executives and consultants. None would be identified because of the sensitivity surrounding conference realignment.

Three SEC presidents recently told Action Network they had “no interest” in adding Florida State. It takes 12 of the 16 SEC presidents to favor adding another school.

The Big Ten also is not interested in the Seminoles, sources said.

“[Big Ten commissioner] Tony [Petitti] is staying away from expansion, and we’re taking Tony’s lead,” a source said.

Added another: “Why would anyone want to expedite more chaos by adding Florida State?”

One source, however, cautioned “never say never” about FSU going to the Big Ten because there could be a path if the ACC disintegrates.

“There is no appetite among the presidents unless there is some catastrophic development with the ACC and it forces [the Big Ten] into a decision,” the source said.

“If the ACC blows up, who picks first [between the Big Ten and SEC]? Who picks second? If there is a need and desire to expand, you take inventory so your competitors don’t get it. But the presidents and chancellors are looking for stability. Despite what the social media geniuses are suggesting, no one — the leagues, the networks — is driving expansion.”

That could change if the ACC no longer exists.

But if the price to get out of the ACC is too prohibitive that Florida State and Clemson are the only schools to exit, what happens?

“If the ACC doesn’t implode, Florida State could be in a dangerous spot,” another source said. “I don’t know if they have a home. Unless there’s a doomsday scenario and the ACC implodes, FSU is in a bad spot.”

Another source stressed the Big Ten is “happy where we’re at.”

“What’s the upside of Florida State?” the source said. “We got what we needed by adding USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington — and Oregon and Washington were added at 50 cents on the dollar to help USC and UCLA. Who would Florida State help? And at what cost? And, most importantly, who’s going to pay for it?”

At long last, it is finally here. EA has released the hotly anticipated College Football 25. With its release, we are taking a look at the ACC's top-ranked offenses in the game. The Miami Hurricanes, with the addition of quarterback Cam Ward and running back Damien Martinez, are the number-one-ranked ACC offense in the game, and the seventh-ranked offense overall in the game. Some of the other top offenses are the other teams expected to contend for the ACC Title this year, like Clemson, Florida State, Virginia Tech, and NC State. To see the ranking of the top 5 ACC teams, and where they rank overall in the game, check out our video of the ACC's top offensive teams in College Football 25.

Clemson, Florida State or another team? Here are my 2024 ACC football predictions | Baxley (fayobserver.com; Baxley)

Ireland will host the first college football game of the 2024 season, which happens to be an all-ACC matchup between Georgia Tech and reigning conference champion Florida State in Dublin.

With Cal, SMU and Stanford joining the league, 17 squads will be competing for an opportunity to play for the ACC championship on Dec. 7 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

The Seminoles or Clemson have raised the title trophy in 12 of the last 13 seasons, but could N.C. State, Miami or Virginia Tech buck the trend this season?

The official preseason ACC media poll will be released following ACC Kickoff, but here are my predictions for order of finish in the conference.

ACC preseason predictions

A preseason look at the projected league standings.

Clemson

The Tigers lost three of their four games last season by one possession, finishing with a 9-4 record to snap a streak of 12 straight seasons with double-digit wins. Clemson has to travel to Florida State (Oct. 5), but the defense will be elite and the offense will be much improved.

Florida State

Following a perfect run through the ACC last season, head coach Mike Norvell had to replace 10 NFL draft picks. Former Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei is among the talented additions from the transfer portal and the Seminoles should win double-digit games for the third year in a row.

NC State

With a manageable schedule and a talented haul via the transfer portal, this could be the year for the Wolfpack. The expectations are high in Raleigh. If Coastal Carolina transfer Grayson McCall can stay healthy, N.C. State just might be able to live up to those expectations.

Miami

The hyped-up Hurricanes won another offseason by adding Washington State quarterback Cam Ward and Oregon State running back Damein Martinez. Will Mario Cristobal be able to get this talented roster over the hump or will Miami continue to be a preseason darling that falls flat on its face?

Virginia Tech

The Hokies avoid Florida State and host Clemson (Nov. 9), opening the door for an opportunity as a dark horse in the league. Head coach Brent Pry returns a bulk of talented players on both sides of the ball, including quarterback Kyron Drones.

Louisville

The Cardinals won 10 games and played for the ACC title in their debut season under Jeff Brohm. Despite losing some of its top contributors, Louisville enters the season with one of the top transfer portal classes.

SMU

The best bet among the newcomers, the Mustangs have are coming off a championship season in the AAC behind head coach Rhett Lashlee and quarterback Preston Stone. SMU has a tough start out of the gate with Florida State (Sept. 28) before a trip to Louisville (Oct. 5), but this program has plenty of offensive and defensive talent.

North Carolina

The post-Drake Maye era should feature a lot of running back Omarion Hampton, one of the top playmakers in the nation. Even with quarterback questions, the Tar Heels have a proven defensive coordinator and a relatively easy schedule.

Georgia Tech

Led by quarterback Haynes King, the Yellow Jackets offense will be among the ACC’s best. But Georgia Tech’s defense has a long way to go and the schedule, which includes 11 teams that played in a bowl game last season, is brutal.

Cal

Running back Jaydn Ott has established himself as one of the top rushers in the nation, but the Bears face Florida State (Sept. 21), Miami (Oct. 5) and N.C. State (Oct. 19) in three of their first four ACC games.

Syracuse

Former Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord and first-year head coach Fran Brown, an elite recruiter and assistant at Georgia, will try to get the Orange on track. Tight end Oronge Gadsden II and running back LeQuint Allen are among the best players in the ACC.

ACC Will Bring iPad Technology to ACC Football Sidelines and Coaches Booth (clemsonsportstalk.com)

The Atlantic Coast Conference and Apple will collaborate to bring iPad Technology to ACC football sidelines and coaches booths starting with the 2024 season, the ACC and Disney Advertising announced today. All 17 ACC football programs will have access to conference-provided iPad Pro and iPad Air models to immediately view video playback, elevating on field performance.

In April, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved the use of video for in-game evaluation. The large multi-touch display of iPad, combined with its performance and portability, make it the ideal solution for coaches and student-athletes to watch film in-game in an efficient and timely manner. The video provided to each team’s sideline will include the broadcast feed and camera angles from the coach's sideline and coach's end zone.

“The ACC continues its commitment in embracing the use of technology to elevate the performance of our student-athletes, teams, officials, and more,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. “We are proud to advance the sport of football and build upon our positive experiences over the last two years of testing in men’s and women’s basketball. Between our state-of-the-art ACC Game Day Operations Center, being at the forefront of testing the technology in basketball and with this year’s integration in football, we are proud of our unparalleled prioritization of technology and the positive impact it will have for our league.”

"We're thrilled the ACC is utilizing iPad, as its unique capabilities and versatility make it the ideal solution to support coaches and student-athletes,” said Scott Brodrick, Apple's Worldwide iPad Product Marketing. “With an unrivaled combination of advanced displays, powerful performance, portability, fast connectivity, all day battery life and versatile accessories, iPad will let coaches and players make in-game adjustments and empower athletes to compete at the highest level.”

The ACC will kick off the 2024 college football season in Dublin with a Week 0 matchup between Florida State and Georgia Tech, live on ESPN in the 2024 Aer Lingus College Football Classic at Aviva Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 24 (noon ET). Action continues in Week 1 with all 17 ACC teams taking to the field and 16 of them playing across Disney platforms over Labor Day weekend.

Estimated FBS Enrollment, 2021-23 (RX; HM)

Estimated FBS Enrollment, 2021-23

From "Schools by size" posted by "bullet" (a Texas Longhorns fan) on CSNBBS:

There are a lot of smaller schools that get thrown around as FBS or P5 candidates. Below is a list of FBS schools sorted by size. This is total students, graduate and undergraduate, excluding (as best as i could tell) online only students. Schools like Georgia Tech, Troy and Liberty have very large online enrollments. These numbers were from a variety of sources, but all are for 2021 to 2023. The first column is the year they moved to FBS (or I-A or University division or whatever the top division was called at that time)

ACC vs XII Revenue: UCF PoV (RX; HM)

ACC vs XII Revenue: UCF PoV

From "Attempt at predicting ACC and Big 12 Conference distributions to 2030" posted by U-C-FKnights on CSNBBS, here is an honest attempt - by a Big XII fan - to project ACC vs Big XII revenues for the next 6 years...

With so much change coming and all the talk about FSU and Clemson, I felt like I wanted to try to map out everything I know to figure out what revenue may look like in the next several years.
I'm not going to go into my whole methodology, but I am going to lay out some of my assumptions.
1. I included the revenue reduction from the NCAA payouts for the settlement
2. I included a small amount of new money from NCAA as I am predicting there will be Participation credits for the Women's tournament after they renewed that contract
3. Big 12 seems to have around a 30M advantage on "Other Revenue" which I am predicting they will keep and grow slightly due to Yormark's aggressiveness. (this is probably a bias, and end up being wrong).
4. I'm assuming SMU is getting a full share of everything except media money. I found an article that seems to confirm that they will get a full share of the ACC Network money, and CFP, but I'm not really sure about "other" revenue
5. I'm not 100% sure about ND's share calculation, but I think I got it.
6. Big 12 conference seems to recently be keeping slightly less than the ACC, but I'm not sure which way that will go, so I made them equal as a steady 8% annually to the conference.
7. I'm assuming that ESPN and Fox agreed to pro rata for all 4 of the new big 12 schools.
8.I factored in CalFord and SMU partial shares. I did not really bother with the performance fund, I just averaged and distributed it all to the legacy schools and ND.

Figuring this out was the most work. I had to make a lot of assumptions and predictions which could turn out wrong. I didn't just wing it though, I used a lot of information I could gather to make my predictions.
Here are a couple sources I used

Assumptions

1. I assume ACCN reached peak subscribers in 2023 and expect a small decline the next couple years as ESPN losing subs.
2. ESPN will continue losing subs, but slower than cable as a whole. I estimated 4% a year. ESPN subs could decline much faster if cord cutting accelerates or the straight to cable Sports network makes ESPN change their approach to cable bundling.
3. ACC will gain some money from vMVPDs that include the ACCN, but I don't think it will be a lot, but will steadily grow. I kind of pulled this number from my butt, it is based on the left over after I tried to calculate ACCN profit over several years. it could just as easily been that operation expenses are less than I model for.
4. I am using $100M in operating expenses from starting in 2022. I didn't have a lot to go on, but I am assuming it is similar to operating expense of the Pac12 network, and I also found another estimate on a blog that also said 100M for ACCN, so I just said, I'll go with that.
5. I assume operating expense will increase 3% annually
6. 20% of ACCN revenue is from ads, 80% fees
6. A big one is I am assuming that they will eventually get the full $1.3 rate in Texas and California (20% of the population). but they won't get it all up front. this will come online gradually as contracts are renegotiated. I could be completely wrong on that. I guess we'll see. I'll know if the ACCN revenue takes a huge jump next year.

My prediction:

I apologize for the formatting, I wanted to paste it as a table, but I guess I can't or I can't figure out how to.

Big 12

Year Total Rev Media CFP Other Conf Cut Distrib
2025 $790.0 $456.0 $192.0 $142.0 $63.2 $45.4
2026 $816.8 $474.2 $192.0 $150.5 $65.3 $47.0
2027 $844.8 $493.2 $192.0 $159.6 $67.6 $48.6
2028 $874.1 $512.9 $192.0 $169.1 $69.9 $50.3
2029 $904.7 $533.5 $192.0 $179.3 $72.4 $52.0
2030 $936.8 $554.8 $192.0 $190.0 $74.9 $53.9
Nothing groundbreaking. The Big 12 prediction was easy. They are under contract until 2031 and their only real option for increasing payouts, is to get creative in the "Other" revenue pile.
Note: I modeled it without the 4C expansion and expanding is costing the 12 schools 3.1M each per year for a total of around 19M. I can't remember what the Iowa State or Baylor AD said they were losing, but it is a decent amount of money. I think it was worth it though.

ACC

Year Total Rev ACCN Media CFP Other Conf Cut distrib Cal/Stan SMU ND
2025 $898.3 $168.3 $395.2 $221.0 $113.8 $71.9 $50.7 $32.8 $26.4 $20.64
2026 $924.0 $173.3 $411.4 $221.0 $118.4 $73.9 $52.2 $33.5 $26.9 $21.38
2027 $949.7 $177.4 $428.3 $221.0 $123.1 $76.0 $53.7 $34.3 $27.4 $22.10
2028 $975.5 $180.6 $445.8 $221.0 $128.0 $78.0 $55.2 $35.0 $27.8 $22.79
2029 $1,001.4 $183.1 $464.1 $221.0 $133.1 $80.1 $56.7 $35.6 $28.2 $23.47
2030 $1,027.5 $184.9 $483.1 $221.0 $138.5 $82.2 $58.2 $36.3 $28.6 $24.13

Takeaways.

1. As many predicted the ACC should stay around 5M ahead of the Big 12 unless Yormark pulls a rabbit from his hat.
2. SMU made out fine
3. The ACC expansion was probably smarter than I gave them credit for. Without it I predict revenue from the ACCN peaked in 2023 and will gradually fall flattening out their revenue growth and the Big 12 would pass them in average distribution. If both leagues passed on expansion, the Big 12 would have passed them in 2027.
3. The addition of California and Texas to the ACCN network could bring in $90M if it all came at once in year 1. but would gradually fall.
4. I estimate that ACCN peaked in 2023 but will start to grow revenue again until it peaks again by 2029 or 2030 and then start falling off again.
5. lastly the ACC maintains their edge only because of uneven revenue sharing. I have the big 12 catching up to the ACC by 2030 in revenue/p school. So the conference revenue will be about equal right in time for the Big 12 to go to market. if they pull ahead and by how much will be determined at that time.
6. If the Big 12 was to just extend their current contract, due to falling ACCN revenue, CalFord eventually increasing shares, the Big 12 pull away a little between 2031 and 2036.
with an extension with same terms and nothing much else changing this is what I predict distributions to be in 2036:
Big 12: 66.9
ACC: 60
interestingly if neither conference expanded
Big 12: 72.1
ACC: 59.7
This tells me two things.
1. If the Big 12 don't get a 5M bump in their next contract, adding 4C schools may not have been worth it.
2. ACC expansion didn't really gain them much long term, but it did at least put money in their pockets in the short term.
Edit: Full distribution on day one scenario for ACCN
Sine there is a lot of debate about whether ACCN network will immediately get the in-state rates for Texas and California, I ran the numbers on day1 full distribution

This is obviously better for ACC and brings in a bunch of new money first year. but the impact is not as big as you may think. It does bring in about $18M more for each school through 2030 about 3M per year, which is pretty good and further separates the legacy ACC teams from the Big 12 distribution over this time.
However, it only delays the inevitable. By 2030 the bump is about gone, and I still see the Big 12 passing them in per school revenue by 2032 or so.
Also remember 2030 is the last year with Cal and Standford at only 30% of media revenue payout, so average distribution drops off some for the legacy schools starting in 2031.

Why are they allowed to play in Week Zero, 2024?

From the NCAA Division I 2023-24 Manual, Article 17: Playing and Practice Seasons, 17.11 Football:

17.11.4 First Contest.
[FBS/FCS] An institution shall not play its first contest (game or scrimmage) with outside competition in football prior to the Thursday preceding Labor Day (see Figure 17-2). (Revised: 1/11/89, 1/9/96 effective 8/1/96, 1/14/97, 5/12/05)

Fortunately, there are exceptions...

17.11.4.1 Exception -- Institutions That Compete in Hawaii. [FBS/FCS] An institution that is scheduled to play a regular-season game in Hawaii may play its first permissible contest with outside competition on the Saturday prior to the Thursday preceding Labor Day. If the institution's first opponent of the season is not a member institution located in Hawaii, the institution’s first opponent of the season may also play its first contest (game or scrimmage) with outside competition on the Saturday prior to the Thursday preceding Labor Day. (Adopted: 4/28/16 effective 8/1/16)

Applies to:

  • SMU at Nevada (Nevada plays at Hawaii on Oct. 26th)
  • Delaware State at Hawaii

Rule 17.11.4.1 is what allows SMU to play Nevada in Week 0 - since Nevada plays at Hawaii later in the season.
But what about all those FCS teams - they don't visit Hawaii!

17.11.4.2 Exception -- Nationally Televised Contest -- Championship Subdivision. [FCS] In championship subdivision football, an institution may participate in a nationally televised (broadcast or cable; not Internet only) contest against a nonconference opponent during the weekend (Saturday-Sunday) before the Thursday preceding Labor Day. Participation in such a contest is limited to one institution per conference per year. An institution that participates in such a contest for two consecutive years may not participate in such a contest in the following year. (Adopted: 4/28/16 effective 8/1/16)

Applies to:

  • McNeese at Tarleton State, 3:30pm on ESPN2
  • Montana State at New Mexico, 4:00pm on FS1
  • Southeast Missouri vs North Alabama (in Montgomery, AL), 7:00pm on ESPN
  • Norfolk State vs Florida A&M (in Atlanta, GA), 7:30pm on ABC

Are Florida State, Clemson ACTUALLY Joining Expansion Big 12 Over SEC, Big 10 in Shocking ACC Exit? (youtube; podcast; Locked on Big 12)

If Florida State and Clemson were added to the Big 12 after being declined by the SEC and Big Ten, it would bring about a transformative shift in the college football landscape, significantly enhancing the Big 12's competitiveness, financial health, recruiting power, and national standing.

Building outlined in red depicts a nine-story apartment building Gem Street Holdings LLC has proposed building at 411-413 University Ave. in Syracuse.Mosher Architects

9-story apartment building proposed near Syracuse University (PS; $; Moriarty)

A developer from New York City has proposed building a nine-story apartment building near the Syracuse University campus.

Gem Street Holdings LLC has filed plans with the city to build the 47-unit apartment building where two homes now stand at 411 and 413 University Ave. The two homes would be demolished.

The apartments would be studio, and two-, four- and five-bedroom units. In addition, the building would have a study room and a fitness center for tenants, and 11,481 square feet of commercial space.

The site is a block north of the former Temple Concord site, where Landmark Properties, of Athens, Georgia, plans to build 210 apartments, with a total of 599 bedrooms.

The site is also adjacent to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York and across the street from the historic Grace Church at 412 University Ave.

The apartments would not be restricted to students, but most of the tenants would be students, given the development’s proximity to SU, Jack Mamiye, managing member of Gem Street Holdings, told the Syracuse Planning Board during a meeting June 17. The site is a five-minute walk to the SU campus.

Gem Street Holdings has not said what the rents would be. Mamiye said five of the units would be priced so they are affordable for people making no more than 80% of the area median income, per the requirements of a provision in a new city zoning law that applies to apartment buildings with 20 or more units.

The property would have only six on-site parking spaces. Most student tenants likely would not have cars because they could walk or bike to class, Mamiye said.

Dereck Bond brings out the pizza he made at the Western Ranch, the 28th stop on the CNY Pizza Tour. (Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)(Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)

CNY Pizza Tour, stop #28: You’re going to wait for a tavern pizza at this roadside motel, but it’s worth it (PS; $; Miller)

The Half Moon Band was midway through its set Saturday night at the Western Ranch Motor Inn when I ordered a pizza. They were playing “Folsom Prison Blues” when my server Sheila Bond warned me.

“It’s gonna be awhile,” she said. “Like, we’re talking 45 minutes. Are you folks sure I can’t get you something else?”

No thanks, Sheila. I’m on a pizza tour of Central New York, not a prime rib tour.

See, the Ranch doesn’t have a pizza oven in its kitchen. The 27 restaurants I had visited before stopping here all cook their pizzas in stone-lined ovens between 500 and 600 degrees. Here, they use a traditional oven set to 450.

We were in no rush, so we grabbed a beer, an order of soft pretzels with German mustard and enjoyed the band and conversation. We even got to sit at the corner table normally reserved for Walter “Wally” Gaworecki Jr., the owner of this historic roadside motel since 1981. He was at the Meadowlands watching a friend’s horse compete.

“The pizza we serve here is the kind of pizza we grew up with,” Wally said. “It’s just how we’ve always done it.”

Let’s grab a slice of history, then ...

Address: Western Ranch Motor Inn, 1255 State Fair Blvd., Syracuse, (315) 457-9236

Do they deliver: No, it’s a motel bar and restaurant. Sit down. Enjoy yourself. Or try one of those delivery services.

What I ate: A 16-inch pizza with pepperoni, sausage and onions.

Why this pizza? This menu has no specialty pizzas. It’s just basic pizza with seven basic toppings available. Dereck Bond, the head chef here, urged me to try the sausage. His mother, Sheila Bond, was my server. She suggested pepperoni. Since everyone else had input in what I was going to eat, I added onions.

The former Cafe Garzone on South Avenue has been empty since the restaurant closed in 2010. The city of Syracuse, which seized the property for back taxes in 2014, is looking to find a developer who would bring housing to the South Avenue site. Syracuse seeks new housing at site where restaurant operated for nearly a century (PS; $; Boyer)

Syracuse officials are trying to bring housing to the site of a once-iconic South Side Syracuse restaurant.

Mayor Ben Walsh’s administration plans to seek proposals for redevelopment of the former Cafe Garzone at 2426 South Ave. The family-owned restaurant operated there from 1921 through 2010. The city seized it in 2014 due to more than $76,000 in back taxes and late fees that hadn’t been paid since 2006.

The Syracuse Common Council recently approved spending $2,750 to have the 1.4-acre site surveyed. After that work is completed, city officials will work to get an RFP issued.

Michael Lehmann, deputy commissioner of asset management and valuation, said the goal is to have the RFP published by the end of September.

“The sooner the better,” he told syracuse.com this week. “The city is looking for a better use of the property than as it exists now.”

The surveyors will evaluate two adjacent parcels with the expectation that they would be merged together for redevelopment purposes. The 4,000-square-foot building housed the restaurant on the ground floor and an apartment upstairs. It could be renovated into all housing or it could be demolished to make room for new construction, Lehmann said.

“That’s something we’ll consider when we have proposals returned,” he said.

if EA numbers are correct they would give us a shot a 9-3. I think we would all take that because it would mean 9-2 with Miami in the Dome that last game for a 10 win season.
