Welcome to National Buttered Corn Day!

There are six different kinds of maize, or corn, and one of them is sweet corn, the kind that is most often celebrated on National Buttered Corn Day. Corn was first domesticated by Indigenous peoples in southern Mexico thousands of years ago, and more corn is now produced around the world than wheat or rice, although not all of it is used for human consumption. Sweet corn is picked when the kernels are still soft, and it is cooked in many different ways. Most commonly it is boiled or steamed on a stove, roasted or grilled on a grill or in an oven, or microwaved. Many times skewers are put on both ends of the cob after the husk is removed so it can can more easily be held, and butter, salt, and pepper are common seasonings used on the corn. It also can be cut off the cob and eaten with a fork. It can be a pretty healthy snack if it is not overloaded with butter and salt, as an ear of corn usually isn't much more than 100 calories, and is high in fiber. But, being that today is National Buttered Corn Day, you probably shouldn't worry too much about your health just this once.

Syracuse Orange Football 2024 Season Preview (youtube; podcast; WakeUpCallDT)

Wake Up Call with Dan Tortora brings you "Tortora & Alford" as DT & Isaac preview the 2024-25 Syracuse Orange Football season...

These True Freshmen could make an IMMEDIATE Impact for Syracuse Football | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse Football's 2024 freshman class consists of 26 total players. Some of them may be able to see the field for Fran Brown's squad this season. Yasin Willis and Malachi James are a duo of running backs who might have roles. Marcellus Barnes and KingJoseph Edwards may not be starters, but are in line to contribute for Elijah Robinson's defense. Emanuel Ross and Jamie Tremble are four-star prospects that should make an impact in 2025 and beyond.

Jackson Holzer goes over the most impactful freshmen on Syracuse's roster on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

Yasin Willis & Malachi James Make the Syracuse Football Backfield LOADED | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse; premieres at 10 AM EST)

Syracuse football has all-ACC running back LeQuint Allen leading the backfield. However, Fran Brown has also brought in a quality transfer in Will Nixon and picked up true freshmen Yasin Willis and Malachi James. Overall, the Orange have a really strong running back unit.

Jackson Holzer explains the impact of Willis and James.

Syracuse football defensive coordinator Elijah Robinson joins the show to chat 4-2-5 defense, appreciating SU football history, how the Northeast and the SEC bring a unique combo of football experiences, the hype and expectations on The Hill and more

Syracuse football: my big questions heading into the 2024 season (TNIAAM; Wall)

As we get closer to the Syracuse Orange season opener, I’ve got some questions that I think will be crucial to Syracuse’s success in 2024.

These are questions beyond health or the play of the offensive line. These are questions that I think determine if Syracuse is just a bowl-eligible team, or a legitimate top 25 program. I’m going to take one question for each phase of the game, so let’s start with the offense.

Can the Orange run the ball effectively from a three wide receiver set?

A lot of people are excited about the depth at tight end and running back and the notion of a tough, ground attack. I’m curious to see if Syracuse can run the ball from a passing set. Why? Well Fran Brown talks a lot about George DeLeone’s offense and what made that offense was innovative was that the Orange could attack in multiple ways from their formations/player groupings.

If the Orange have three wide receivers and Oronde Gadsden, defenses are going to have to decide what they want to do? Do they play single coverage and commit seven defenders to the run? Do they keep the safeties back and try and stop the run with five defenders? Do they sit in a zone and try to dare Kyle McCord to find the seams?

Can the defense generate more pressure via coverage?

Fadil Diggs was a great transfer addition. Syracuse has some promising edge rushers. Blitzes are exciting, but can the Orange get to the quarterback without a lot of blitzing?

Relying on a lot of blitzes to generate a pass rush leaves teams open to big plays. Syracuse has given up a lot of those and it’s turned close games into blowouts

Syracuse has a deep and talented secondary so can we see more in the way of “coverage sacks”? Would better coverage allow Marlowe Wax and others to spy mobile quarterbacks and avoid them shredding the Orange as we’ve seen the last few years?

Can special teams return to being special?

Another aspect of those successful Orange teams of the 80s and 90s was the play on special teams. No one coined a fun name for it like “Beamer Ball” but Syracuse used better athletes on special teams and turned games into wins as a result (just ask Steve Spurrier).

The Juice Online - Offensive Line — 2024 Syracuse Football preview (r1vals.com; Stechschulte)

This year’s offensive line will feature a lot of players with starting experience, both at Syracuse and elsewhere. Four players started at least ten times for the Orange last year and the transfer portal produced four reinforcements for the offensive trenches with three of those players starting at least nine times last season. It still remains to be seen how this group will shake out before the season opener.
J’Onre Reed was a junior college transfer prior to last season and started all 13 games at center. Reed was an excellent pass protector in his first season at SU, being responsible for just one opponent sack and earning the team’s highest pass-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus.

Enrique Cruz has started 18 games at tackle over the last two seasons, including all 13 games last year at left tackle. Cruz allowed just one sack last season to go with three quarterback hits.

Thrust into the lineup last season at right tackle due to injury, Mark Petry started 11 games as a redshirt junior. Petry has 26 games under his belt and should be a rotational piece, at the very least. Jakob Bradford saw action in every game last season, including being part of the starting lineup ten times. Bradford, a redshirt junior, saw action at both guard spots last season.

Josh Ilaoa has been a rotational player during his collegiate career, seeing action in 46 games and starting twice. Ilaoa has been a fill-in across the interior positions of the line with one start at center and the other at guard. Joe Cruz appeared in a dozen games last season, including starting three times. Most of Cruz’s action came at left guard.

David Wohlabuagh Jr. transferred to the Orange prior to last season and earned the starting job at right tackle. Unfortunately, Wohlabuagh broke his fibula in the second game, prematurely ending his season and paving the way for Petry to be elevated to the starting lineup. Wohlabaugh eventually had to have a second surgery to repair the injury, causing him to miss spring camp, as well.

Of the three transfers with starting experience, Savion Washington played at the highest level after starting nine games and playing in a tenth at right tackle for Colorado last season. Prior to that, Washington played in a dozen games at Kent State, including starting ten times in the 2022 season for the Flashes.

Codie Hornsby transferred to the Orange after playing at Delaware State and Grambling. Hornsby started 21 games in two seasons at Grambling and arrives at Syracuse as a redshirt junior with two years of eligibility remaining.

Da’Metrius Weatherspoon transferred to SU after three seasons at Howard. While he only played in the 2023 season, Weatherspoon was named an HBCU All-American after starting all 12 games for the Bison.

There is also a fourth incoming offensive line transfer, as Joshua Miller joins the Orange program after one season where he did not play at Georgia. In high school, Miller was a three-star prospect as an interior lineman, ranking in the top 50 at his position in his class.

Among the incoming freshman, three-star recruit Willie Goodacre from Texas brings the most impressive resume, as he was ranked as a top-100 interior lineman in his high school class.

Syracuse Orange: The ACC has 'never been stronger as a league,' commissioner says (itlh; Adler)

For the upcoming 2024-25 season, the Syracuse Orange and its peers in the Atlantic Coast Conference have seen their membership ranks expand, with the additions of California, SMU and Stanford.

The ACC's commissioner, Jim Phillips, is quite bullish on the conference's future, even as two league members, Clemson and Florida State, are engaged in legal battles with the ACC, as I discussed in a separate column on Thursday.

“We’ve never been stronger as a league,” Phillips said during a recent appearance on ESPN's SportsCenter, per an article from On3 national writer Barkley Truax.

While that may be true, the ACC is clearly lagging behind the two powerhouse leagues in collegiate athletics, the Southeastern Conference and the Big Ten Conference. Depending on who you talk to you, the ACC could also be in the No. 4 spot nationally, trailing those two leagues as well as the Big 12 Conference.

Syracuse Football: ACC legal battles with Clemson, Florida St. an annoying distraction (itlh; Adler)

As Syracuse football gets set to open its 2024 season at the end of August, the Atlantic Coast Conference is engaged in legal battles with two other league members, Florida State and Clemson.

I find these legal issues to be utterly annoying. I'm excited for the Orange, led by first-year head coach Fran Brown, to commence its upcoming campaign.

Yet I feel like a somewhat dark cloud is hanging over the ACC, which for this season has added new members California, SMU and Stanford.

At the center of these lawsuits between the ACC, and both Florida State and Clemson, is the league's grant of rights media deal with ESPN that expires in 2036.

If the Seminoles and Tigers brass want to leave the ACC, so be it. If those two schools want to try and get out of the grant of rights deal, and potentially significant exit fees, that is of course their right.

But with excitement building for the 2024 season in college football, and the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff, I'd love to focus on what will transpire on the field, not in courtrooms. That being said, this is not the world we live in - college football and television revenue are a big business, and every stakeholder has a different agenda.

As Syracuse football prepares to take the field, the ACC and other member schools are involved in lawsuits.

Amid the explosion of conference realignment, regarding college football, national pundits clearly view the Southeastern Conference and the Big Ten Conference as the leaders of the pack. I get that.

However, in the race for the No. 3 spot, the top contenders are the aforementioned ACC and the Big 12 Conference. Now, down the road, should Florida State, Clemson or any other league school bolt the ACC, that would be damaging to the ACC. There's no other way to slice it.

Then again, does the SEC or the Big Ten want FSU and/or Clemson? I've seen reports that perhaps not. Could the Big 12 swoop in and land the Seminoles and the Tigers? Only time will tell.

https://www.informnny.com/sports/or...ootball-gets-set-to-close-out-preseason-camp/ (informnny.com; Sacco)

In 10 days the Fran Brown era begins at Syracuse, as SU opens the season on August 31st at home against Ohio.

Wednesday, eight players were named to the Reese’s Senior Bowl Watch list. Kyle McCord, Marlowe Wax, Alijah Clark, Oronde Gadsden II, Justin Barron, Fadil Diggs, Dion Wilson, Jr., & Savion Washington were added to the watch list.

Syracuse will hold its final preseason practice open to the media on Friday.

Syracuse Football: Why the Orange will finish 8-4 in 2024 (TNIAAM; Chiappone)

Monday August 19: 5-7 Kevin

Tuesday August 20: 6-6 Steve

Wednesday August 21: 7-5 Max

Thursday August 22: 8-4 Dom

Friday August 23: 9-3 Carson

Saturday August 24th: 10-2 Mike

Sunday August 25th: CFP Bound- a special guest

*****************************************************************************************************

In coach Fran Brown’s first year, this scenario likely meets right in the middle between the Orange’s pessimists and optimists. Let’s jump right in for today’s 8-4 prediction for the upcoming season.

Ohio Bobcats- Win (1-0, 0-0)

As with most of these record scenarios, Syracuse comfortably surges ahead of Ohio and the Fran era gets off to an undefeated start.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets - Win (2-0, 1-0)

Similar to how Max described it, Georgia Tech emerges as the Orange’s first real test of 2024. In an offensive shootout, Kyle McCord and Syracuse’s offense has just enough in the tank as the arrow continues to point up early in the year.

Stanford Cardinal- Win (3-0, 2-0)

For the third straight year, a healthy Syracuse team comes out strong out of the gate and performs well at home in its first All-Coast Conference game. Under this regime, the Orange avoid the post-bye week hangover and keep the early-season winning streak going against Stanford on Friday night.

Holy Cross Crusaders- Win (4-0, 2-0)

Holy Cross stands no chance against the Orange... unless you’re simulating this game in College Football 25.

UNLV Rebels- Loss (4-1, 2-0)

Also for the third straight year, a hot start at the beginning of the year quickly cools as the Orange struggle against an underrated UNLV team in their first road game of the year. And thus, a long road trip away from the Dome begins.

NC State Wolfpack- Loss (4-2, 2-1)

A hungry NC State squad crushes the Orange in Raleigh, easiest the toughest or second-toughest road environment on the Orange’s schedule this year. Keep in mind Syracuse last beat the Wolfpack on the road in 2013, and the road losing streak unfortunately continues in this scenario.

Pittsburgh Panthers- Win (5-2, 3-1)

An 8-4 scenario usually leads to at least one odd/lucky/surprise result, and that would be Syracuse snapping its 11-game (true) road losing streak to Pittsburgh. The Orange’s performance in a nationally televised game generates some legit momentum heading into Syracuse’s alumni weekend.

Syracuse Football Rooting Interests: Week 0 (orangefizz.net; Aitken)

College football is less than 48 hours away! While there are only four games in week 0, and Syracuse football doesn’t play, there’s still relevant games for Orange fans. Here’s who to root for if you want the best-case scenario for the ‘Cuse.

New Mexico vs. Montana State: N/A

Neither of these teams play Syracuse football, are in the ACC, or have any connection to the Orange this season. You can watch this one and cheer for whoever your heart desires.

Hawai’i vs. Delaware State: N/A

Same thing here. If you want to stay up for a midnight start, that’s on you, because this game has no implications for Syracuse football.

Georgia Tech vs. #10 Florida State: Georgia Tech
https://go.ezodn.com/ads/charity/pr...s://www.artworks-sy.co.uk/donate&ffid=1&co=US
An ACC game means there’s definitely something for Orange fans to watch for. At the very least, it gives you a chance to see Georgia Tech, who SU hosts on September 7th. However, you should also root for the Yellow Jackets. Syracuse football plays Georgia Tech this year, but not Florida State. That means that a Yellow Jackets victory would increase SU’s strength of schedule. That’s not likely to mean anything statistically, but a Syracuse win over a Georgia Tech will mean a lot more if the Yellow Jackets just beat a top-ten team. Plus, it delivers a conference loss to Florida State, the reigning ACC champions. That could help SU’s chances to reach the conference title game.

Nevada vs. SMU: Nevada

Syracuse football doesn’t have SMU on its ACC slate this year, so there’s no benefit in SMU being seen as a better team. Instead, the Mustangs falling would be better for the Orange. If both SU and SMU are great this year, an early-season non-conference loss by the Mustangs would give the Orange an advantage in a situation where the two programs are battling for selection in an ACC-affiliated bowl game.

Orange Bowl: #8 Syracuse vs #5 Miami | NCAA Football 06 Syracuse Orange Dynasty | S3:E13 (youtube; simulation; Playbook Gamer)

Extremely realistic even if this goes back to the 2006 season and is played with ficticious players. Expect a similar outcome in 2024 in November.

Orange Bowl: #8 Syracuse vs #5 Miami | NCAA Football 06 Syracuse Orange Dynasty | S3:E13

Summer Scheming ‘24: Syracuse Orange (stateoftheu.com; Dottavio)

After starting the 2023 season 4-0, the Syracuse Orange then proceeded to drop five in a row. The Orange managed to upset Pitt with Dino Babers still serving as head coach. After losing to Georgia Tech, Babers was fired the following morning.

Over eight seasons Babers final record was 41-55 (20-45 in the ACC). Babers best season at Syracuse was in 2018 where the Orange finished 10-3 and knocking off West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl.

Now the Orange are led by Fran Brown, a 42-year-old career assistant coach. Brown played cornerback at Western Carolina before a two year stint with the Cincinnati Bengals. A New Jersey native, Brown coached high school ball back in Jersey for a season before taking a GA position with the Temple Owls.

Brown served as an assistant coach under Steve Addazio and Matt Rhule whlie at Temple. He then followed Rhule to Baylor but returned to Temple under Rod Carey. Brown then took a position on Greg Schiano’s Rutgers staff before moving down to UGA to coach under Kirby Smart.

While at UGA, the Georgia Bulldogs won the College Football Playoff National Championship for the 2022 season and played for the SEC Championship in 2023.

Syracuse was a 6-7 team in the market for a new head coach, not the typical 3-9 or 4-8 type of situation. There’s talent on the roster and their schedule has winnable games. Cuse plays only two preseason ranked opponents: the Miami Hurricanes and NC State Wolfpack. But they do travel to UNLV which is no longer an easy win under HC Barry Odom.

Program Evaluation

Acquisition

Brown is a top-rated recruiter and per 247 pushed the Orange into 8th in recruiting in the ACC in 2024. The Cuse class was 37th in composite ranking and they landed the 25th best transfer portal class. Their HS class was led by KingJoseph Edwards, a four-star rush end out of Georgia.

Which player is most likely to decide Syracuse football's postseason fate? (orangefizz.net; Shalam)

Yesterday, eight Syracuse players were named to the Reese’s Senior Bowl watchlist.

Those eight are Dion Wilson Jr, Justin Barron, Alijah Clark, Fadil Diggs, Oronde Gadsden, Kyle McCord, Salon Washington, and Marlow Wax. While all of these players will have a big impact on SU this season, only one is going to be the decider for the Orange’s postseason fate, Oronde Gadsden.

Some say that Kyle McCord is going to be the man whose performance will determine whether Syracuse will make the college football playoff. But, I think that couldn’t be further from the truth. The New Jersey native is a proven reliable arm, throwing for over 3,000 yards last season with 24 touchdowns at Ohio State. McCord also led the Buckeyes to an 11-win season in a competitive Big Ten conference. It’s not to say that the quarterback is guaranteed to play well barring injury, but if you look at the schedule for the Orange and his track record, it’s hard to find somewhere he will falter.

Oronde Gadsden on the other hand is the biggest question mark for the Orange heading into 2024. The tight-end missed nearly all of this past season due to injury. But in 2022, Gadsden caught 61 passes for 969 yards leading tight ends nationally in yardage. On top of that, the senior has been featured on the Athlon All-ACC preseason team in back-to-back campaigns while also earning All-ACC preseason honors this year.

All of these stats show that Gadsden is more than capable of delivering for the Orange this year, it’s just a question of if he can post the same numbers he had two years ago.

FSU, ACC Tell Court They Didn't Resolve Dispute over Potential Exit After Mediation (BR; Polacek)

Florida State and the ACC still haven't resolved anything regarding the school's potential exit from the conference.
Pete Nakos of On3 reported Thursday the two sides met for mediation on Aug. 13 but were unable to come to terms on a settlement. As a result, they filed a joint notice of mediation compliance in Leon County Court that said they will "continue discussions."

Nakos explained that Florida State wants to leave the ACC without paying the cost of buying out the remaining media rights or paying an exit fee. That is a significant ask, as attorneys estimated those costs could come in around $500 million.

Florida State isn't alone in its interest in leaving the conference, as Nakos noted this is just one of four ongoing lawsuits involving the ACC.

Those lawsuits are the ACC vs. Clemson, the ACC vs. Florida State, Clemson vs. the ACC and Florida State vs. the ACC.

"Listen, it's disappointing we're in this place," ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said on SportsCenter on Tuesday (h/t Nakos).

Here's how much Clemson football is paying its non-conference home opponents in 2024 (greenvilleonline.com; Carter)

It will be a seven-figure price tag for Clemson as its football program hosts three non-conference opponents this season at Memorial Stadium.

The non-ACC opponents are Appalachian State on Sept. 7, The Citadel on Nov. 23 and rival South Carolina on Nov. 30.

Last season, Clemson paid a total of $1.6 million after hosting two non-ACC opponents. Charleston Southern received $400,000, and Florida Atlantic secured $1.2 million.

The Tigers will also take on Georgia on Aug. 31 (noon ET, ABC) in the Peach Bowl's Aflac kickoff game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Here's how much No. 14 Clemson is receiving from facing No. 1 Georgia and is paying to their non-conference home opponents in 2024, according to game contracts obtained by The Greenville News via open records requests.

Aug. 31: Georgia (neutral)

This will be the highest-ranked Week 1 matchup, and the game has sold out. The Peach Bowl, Clemson and Georgia executed this game agreement in August 2018.

The organization will pay $5 million to each school by Nov. 15, 2024, for participating.

Each school will receive 70 complementary bench passes and 32 suite tickets for the game. Both also will have 200 complimentary tickets to the College Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 30.

Sept. 7: Appalachian State

Clemson and App State entered this agreement in January 2018. This will be the sixth game between these schools with the latest occurring in 2015, when the Tigers won 41-10 at Memorial Stadium.

Clemson will pay $1.25 million to App State by Feb. 15, 2025, for facing it this season. The Mountaineers also will be allotted 2,300 complimentary tickets.

MORE:Six-hour, last-minute road trip shows trust Clemson's Cade Klubnik has with Phil Mafah

Nov. 23: Citadel

Clemson and The Citadel entered this agreement in June 2017. This will be the 40th matchup between both schools with their first happening in 1909. The Tigers won 49-0 in their most recent game in 2020.

FSU football recruiting has shifted. It will show vs. Georgia Tech (tampabay.com; Baker)

The most interesting message from Florida State football coach Mike Norvell at last month’s ACC kickoff wasn’t anything he said on the stage.

It was who went there with him.

The Seminoles’ three player representatives — Patrick Payton, Darius Washington and Joshua Farmer — weren’t transfers, like Jordan Travis, Keon Coleman and the rest of the portal stars who helped Norvell rebuild the Seminoles.

They all signed with FSU out of high school. That makes them key parts of the homegrown talent that will have an outsized role in whether the No. 10 ‘Noles reload as an ACC championship and playoff contender, starting Saturday in Ireland with their Week 0 opener against Georgia Tech.

Norvell’s portal mastery isn’t a secret. A transfer has led FSU in rushing, passing, tackling and sacks each of the past three seasons (and in receiving in each of the past two). Excluding transfers, 14 Seminoles earned at least third-team all-ACC honors last season. Nine were transfers.

And, crucially, all nine are gone. Someone has to fill their starting spots and star power. Homegrown players are a good place to begin.

Tackling leader Tatum Bethune (from UCF) is in the NFL, creating more opportunities for four-star sophomore Blake Nichelson and fifth-year Seminole DJ Lundy.

Rushing leader Trey Benson (Oregon) is also in the league, providing more touches for Pinellas Park High alumnus Lawrance Toafili.

Sack leader Jared Verse (Albany) is a pro now, too, meaning more limelight for Payton, the 2022 ACC defensive rookie of the year.

“It’s still about putting together the most talented team,” Norvell told reporters at the ACC kickoff.

The only thing that has (slightly) changed is the process.

Transfers, remember, were not necessarily a major part of Norvell’s blueprint. In his introductory news conference, he stressed the importance of Florida high school players on two separate occasions; he never used the words “transfer” or “portal.”

3 most overrated ACC teams entering 2024 season (fightinggobbler.com; Roche)

Florida State, Georgia Tech, and SMU are three ACC schools part of this weekend's Week 0 kick-off to the 2024 college football season. As for the rest of the conference schools, they have to wait until next week to begin the season and a lot of them are beginning the season with high hopes.

While some of the teams can live up to the expectations, some might struggle to. Earlier this week we looked at three underrated teams in the ACC entering 2024 and now it's time to look at three teams that are overrated as we inch closer to the season.

Clemson

Every season Dabo Swinney has the Tigers as an ACC contender, but it's not too often that Clemson is coming into a season following a 4-4 campaign in the conference the year before. They did not add anyone through the transfer portal and they lost some key players to the NFL and have a tough schedule in 2024.

They open with Georgia next weekend in Atlanta, have a trip to FSU, and have a trip to Blacksburg to play Virginia Tech. They also have North Carolina State and Louisville and arguably have one of the tougher ACC schedules. Seeing them finish the season with at least three or four losses is not out of the question.

SMU

This is the first season in the ACC for the Mustangs coming from the AAC where they knocked off Tulane and really rolled over the competition in the league. Now the question is, can they continue to do that against Power 4 schools on a weekly basis? That's the question facing them entering the season.

Preston Stone is one of the better quarterbacks in the conference and he has a number of skilled players who can cause problems for opposing defenses. Their schedule is not too difficult in the ACC with a home game against Florida State and a road game at Louisville on back-to-back weeks, but can they beat the teams they're supposed to beat? They enter the season after dropping the Fenway Bowl to Boston College.

Happy 5th Anniversary to the ACCN! (RX; HM)

Happy 5th Anniversary to the ACCN!

Can you believe it's been five years?

To say the ACC Network has been successful is a huge understatement!
From the WRALSportsFan article "ACC Network, turning 5, delivers revenue, exposure boost for league", the ACC Network has been

"An unequivocal success," said Jeramy Michiaels, an ESPN senior director who oversees the ACC Network and manages ESPN's relationship with the league. "From a revenue and a sales standpoint, I would say it's exceeded our expectations. I would say it is extraordinarily successful."...
"There was sort of a misperception that ESPN is involved and has control of that, and we absolutely do not. We will answer questions to the extent that we feel like we can, and we did with the ACC, but this was solely the ACC's decision, and we're excited about it."
ESPN will have an opportunity to prove how excited it is about the ACC soon enough. It must exercise its nine-year option by February...

2024 ACC SEASON PREVIEW

The 2024 College Football Season is here and the ACC is in for an exciting season. The hosts of the Locked On Podcast Network break down everything you need to know before the season kicks off. Will it be the Clemson Tigers, Florida State Seminoles, Louisville Cardinals, Miami Hurricanes, NC State Wolfpack, North Carolina Tar Heels, Duke Blue Devils, Boston College Eagles, California Golden Bears, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Pittsburgh Panthers, SMU Mustangs, Stanford Cardinal, Syracuse Orange, Virginia Cavaliers, Virginia Tech Hokies or Wake Forest Demon Deacons? The local hosts of the Locked On Podcast network debate who wins and what defines a successful season!
_____

From WRALSports: "ACC Network, turning 5, delivers revenue, exposure boost for league"

Five years after its long-awaited launch, the ACC Network has delivered on its biggest promises: more revenue for the league's schools, more exposure for the school's athletics programs and more availability of those program's games across the nation...
I added the bold, by the way, because I agree: the ACCN has been a huge success!
_____

Syracuse is one of the few ACC schools remaining which have never hosted ESPN's College Gameday. Orange Fizz asks "could this be the year"? The explain why one of the home games against Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, or Miami could be the first...

All-Time 10-Win Seasons (thru 2023) (RX; HM)

All-Time 10-Win Seasons (thru 2023)

How many double-digit winning seasons has your team had? CFBRep did the research for us:

Below is a table/chart for the 18 ACC schools (including Notre Dame). You can see from the bar graph that the top of the ACC is strong and consistently good, and there's a solid middle to back them up...

Team#10-winsgraph
FSU26XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Notre Dame23XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Clemson19XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Miami15XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
VT14XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Pitt8XXXXXXXX
UNC8XXXXXXXX
Louisville7XXXXXXX
SMU7XXXXXXX
Syracuse7XXXXXXX
Cal7XXXXXXX
BC4XXXX
Wake2XX
Duke1X
NC State1X
Virginia1X

OTOH, the bottom of the table highlights the perception problem for the ACC, and it isn't because of any of the expansion teams. Four of the original members* - Wake, Duke, NC State, and Virginia - have combined for only five double-digit winning seasons! That's barely ahead of the worst expansion team, Boston College, who has four by themselves!
Things could be worse: the other 3 power conference each have a team that has never won 10 games in a season (Indiana, Vanderbilt, and Iowa State).

ACC Football preview 2024: Predicted winner, hot seat watch, Heisman chances and more (fansided.com; Buhler)

Of all the Power Four conferences, we face the most uncertainty with the ACC, both in the short-term and the long run.

This may be my boss, FanSided.com and False Start co-host Cody Williams' beloved conference, but I wonder if this league is going to be around in three or four years. Their TV contract with ESPN is slowly killing them. All the while, somebody from this league is going places!

Yes, we have arrived at the fourth of four Power Four previews ahead of the 2024 college football season. I will unpack my thoughts on the Group of Five early next week, as well as the sport at large by this time next week. For now, I attempted to gather my thoughts to try to unpack this league the best I can.

I have an idea of who is going to be good, who is going to be bad, but who really knows?

My favorite thing about really diving into the ACC in the only way I can is that it helps solidify in my mind who is going to make the expanded College Football Playoff. Yes, the ACC is going to be getting a team in this fall, maybe two if the conference is so lucky. Furthermore, I am intrigued to see how the new entrants of Cal, SMU and Stanford do in their new league, one that was in the Eastern Time Zone.

Let's get down to brass tax. What teams do Cody Williams and I have going to Charlotte this season?

  1. Playoffs? You Kiddin' Me?!: Who will play for the ACC Championship?
  2. It's Gettin' Hot in Herre!: ACC head coaches on hot seat entering 2024
  3. LIVE! From Eric Crouch's Couch: Best Heisman contender in the ACC
  4. I'm Trying, Jennifer...: Most likely team to go winless in ACC play
  5. The Paul Finch Satin Kimono: Biggest pretender in the ACC
  6. Definitely, Maybe Might Be Good: Most underrated team in the ACC
  7. Du Hast or Du Hasst?: Will the ACC get multiple teams into the playoff?
  8. Pat the Doc: How will conference realignment impact the ACC in 2024?

Playoffs? You Kiddin' Me?!: Who will play for the ACC Championship?

Not going to lie, Cody Williams and I were all over the place with this. I ended up going with the Miami Hurricanes beating the SMU Mustangs to get the AQ spot out of the ACC this year. Williams ended up going with his wife's alma mater of the North Carolina State Wolfpack beating the up-and-coming Virginia Tech Hokies. We are both bullish on Virginia Tech, but we did not agree on much else with this.

2024 California Football Mini Preview | 2024 ACC Football (youtube; video; ACC DN)

The California Golden Bears are looking to ride the momentum of a strong 2nd half of the season last year as they enter their first season of play in the ACC. The Jackets return 16 total starters from a year ago and have some newcomers coming in who should turn some heads. It all starts with running back Jadyn Ott who brings the threat of scoring to every play. The Cal defense is led by redshirt senior Craig Woodson and a secondary that looks to once again rank among the best in the nation at taking the ball away.. Coach Justin Wilcox, Ott, quarterbacks Fernando Mendoza and Chandler Rogers and Woodson all share their thoughts on what to expect from Cal football this season right here.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are looking to ride the momentum of a strong 2nd half of the season last year and turn 2024 into a championship season in Atlanta. The Jackets return 13 total starters from a year ago and have some newcomers coming in who should turn some heads. It all starts with QB Haynes King, who brings the threat of beating you with his arm or his legs into every game. He shares the backfield with a highly productive group of running backs, led by Jamal Haynes. The Tech defense is looking to take a big step forward this year, anchored by big man Zeek Biggers on the defensive line. Coach Brent Key, Haynes King and Jamal Haynes share their thoughts on what to expect from Georgia Tech this season right here.

2024 Pitt Football Mini-Preview (youtube; video; ACC DN)

The Pitt Panthers will be looking to bounce back in 2023 after a season in which they finished 3-9. They have 13 returning starters led by running back Rodney Hammond Jr. on offense, and defensive back Donovan McMillon on defense. Pitt Head Coach Pat Narduzzi will be trying to inject juice into an offense that averaged 20.2 points per game, and that will fall heavily on the shoulders of quarterback Nate Yarnell. Their defense is hungry to return to dominance after allowing 27.3 points per contest. Their schedule will be headlined by big games with ACC foes like the Clemson Tigers, and a big rivalry game with West Virginia. Tight end Gavin Bartholomew, Narduzzi, and Yarnell themselves get you primed for Pitt's comeback season right here!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8orC8cr63ew (youtube; video; ACC DN)

Miami's Xavier Restrepo comes into this season as one of the finest receivers in America, and the number one weapon for the 'Canes. In 2023, "X" notched 85 receptions for 1,092 yards and 6 scores. According to Pro Football Focus, Restrepo finished the season with an 87.5 offensive rating that placed him seventh among FBS receivers. He was also third among Power 5 wideouts with 53 receptions that went for a first down or a touchdown. Miami Head Coach Mario Cristobal and quarterback Cam Ward tell you all about this fantastic slot receiver.

College Football season is about to kick off. Here are our record projections for every team (usatoday.com; Myerberg)

Deeper conferences. More games. An even tougher road to the national championship under the 12-team College Football Playoff format set to debut this season.

It's become harder than ever to post an unbeaten record. That's why there isn't one team — not Ohio State, not Texas, not even Georgia — picked to run the table in the USA TODAY Sports record projections for every Bowl Subdivision conference.

The Bulldogs are still the favorite in the SEC, followed by the Longhorns, Alabama, LSU and Mississippi. The Buckeyes and Oregon are projected to lead the way in the Big Ten. Utah is the clubhouse leader in the new-look Big 12, while Clemson and Florida State will fight for the top spot in the ACC.

Among the Group of Five, no team is picked to put together a stronger playoff case than Memphis. But keep an eye on Liberty coming out of Conference USA and Sun Belt favorites Appalachian State and James Madison.

Clemson's projected improvement on offense barely nudges the Tigers ahead of the Seminoles. But don't sleep on North Carolina State, angling for the second 10-win season in program history, and fast-rising Virginia Tech. Miami and North Carolina have the talent to surge past our eight-win projections, though the Hurricanes could just as easily disappoint, as we've seen. The league adds in new members SMU, California and Stanford.

Day 3 at the NYS Fair: Today’s handpicked menu and schedule (PS; Miller)

In the state fair business, vendors can always count on suffering through at least one day where crummy weather dampens everything. As these business owners unlocked their stands Thursday morning, an unencumbered sun rose, and they agreed that they had lucked out having that one dud of a day land on this year’s opening.

“We were able to ease into this year’s Fair yesterday, and now it’s going to just keep getting better,” Aaron Horan said during breakfast service at his stand on Restaurant Row. “It’s beautiful today. Just look at it. And summer comes back tomorrow. I’m happy.”

The Fair’s second day did lure 53,707 patrons through the gate, a 40% increase over Wednesday’s lidlifter. And today’s another day with an even better outlook.

Today’s Menu

I’m at the Fair every day and night, and hey, a guy’s gotta eat (and drink). I write about food and drinks for syracuse.com and The Post-Standard, so I might as well as pass suggestions onto you while I’m working here. That said, I’m no expert. I rely on readers to tell me what’s good. If you find something that makes your tummy happy, text me at 315-382-1984 and I’ll give it a shot. I might join you for a meal or drink and pick up the tab.

Breakfast: If you’re going to eat and drink all day at the Fair, you should prepare your body. Start with a long walk, with a big breakfast waiting for you at the end to energize your body batteries.

One of the best early-morning meals here can be found Alivero’s, oddly placed at the westernmost end of the fairgrounds. If you’re walking from Chevy Court, head to Restaurant Row, go past the Expo Center and keep going until your reach the Gate 9. There you’ll finally land at Alivero’s. They pack a full breakfast in a soft tortilla and toast it on a grill. The breakfast wrap ($13) is filled with crispy bacon, scrambled eggs, diced potatoes and American cheese.

You’ll be adding 634 calories to your stomach, but you’ll walk nearly 2 miles getting there and back, so it’s pretty much a wash. At least that’s what I’m telling myself and my cardiologist.

Lunch: This came out of nowhere. A co-worker, Sunny Hernandez, had bought a the Hog & Heifer burger from Tommy C’s stand in the Colonnade. She couldn’t eat it all, so she invited me along for the ride.

It’s your basic 80-20 lean burger with mac & cheese and barbecued pulled pork. Very simple, but oh-so satisfying. This one cost me nothing because Sunny picked up the tab this time, but it cost her $10. Sometimes the best things in life are free.

Beer of the day: There are two types of fairgoers: those who believe the Fair is a celebration of summer’s best, and those who believe it is the intro to fall. The Montauk Watermelon Ale is for Team Summer.

“This tasty watermelon ale was a massive hit last year so we had to bring it back,” said Erinn McDowell, the ale expert who runs the Beer Garden. “This time we jacked it up with a watermelon slice covered in lime and tajin.”

No surfboard needed.

I sampled it on Thursday, so I can pretty much guarantee that I’ll return today when it goes on sale for $1 off the retail price.

NY State Fair forecast for day 3: It’s time to break out the sunscreen (PS; Coin)

The wet, fall-like start to the 2024 New York State Fair will transform into picture-perfect late August weather starting Friday.

Expect sunny skies on Friday, with a high temperature in the upper 70s. Humidity will be on the rise, but still nowhere near muggy.

By the time the fair gates open at 10 a.m. Friday, the odds of rain drop to zero and the temperature will be in the mid 60s, the National Weather Service says. By late afternoon, it could reach 78, just a couple of degrees below normal for August 23.

The high temperature on Wednesday was 68 degrees, the coolest opening day of the fair in 37 years. About a third of an inch of rain fell.

Fair attendance was about half of what it was on opening day 2023.

Friday and the weekend look to be mostly cloud-free, with temperatures Saturday and Sunday getting into the low 80s.

The next mention of rain in the weather service forecast doesn’t come until Wednesday.

Empire Room / Daniella's owner Charlie Roman and syracuse.com reporter Darian Stevenson with the two-foot long Lobster Roll that sells for $95 at the 2024 NY State Fair..Don Cazentre

This NYS Fair lobster roll costs a whopping $95. What else could you get for that money? (PS; $; Cazentre)

You could spend $95 and get 95 $1 hot dogs from the West End Bar & Grill at the New York State Fair. You could also get 95 $1 baked potatoes from the Great New York State Potato Booth in the Horticulture Building.

And, in the Dairy Products Building, you could spend $95 and get 380 of the 25-cent cups of white or chocolate milk. In that same building, you could even buy almost 14 of the legendary Hot Beef Sundaes ($7 each) from the Shake It Up stand.

That same $95 will get you one — just one — lobster roll from the Daniella’s / Empire Room at the 2024 State Fair.

But this isn’t just any lobster roll. It’s a two-foot long Connecticut-style (warm and buttery) roll. It’s filled with more than a pound of lobster meat sourced from Maine at the current market price, Daniella’s owner Charlie Roman said.

The length, by the way, is the same as the fair’s famous Pizze Fritte, which sets you back $5. You could get 19 of those big fried dough treats at the Villa stand for $95, but of course they don’t come with lobster.

Roman, owner of Daniella’s Steakhouse in Lakeland and the Daniella’s Seafood and Pasta House on the fairgrounds, is known for his food and his flair. He makes no apologies for the pricey seafood sandwich.

He noted several customers bought it on Opening Day.

“It’s about the sizzle,” Roman said. “It’s about the wow. You’re not going to find anything else like this at the fair.”

And, Roman said, the giant lobster roll is perfect for sharing. The two-footer is served on a sturdy wooden board, with extra butter on the side.

“Bring in your friends and get one, carve it up, and everybody’s happy,” Roman said. “That’s what the State Fair is all about, isn’t it?”

House special banh mi from Vietnamese Noodle House in Camillus.Jacob Pucci

One of the best sandwiches in CNY is at this strip mall restaurant (Dining Out Review) (PS; $; Pucci)

The banh mi at Vietnamese Noodle House, buried toward the bottom of the appetizer section of the restaurant’s menu, is easy to miss.

I first grew to love this quintessential Vietnamese sandwich at Ky Duyen Cafe, the little Northside Syracuse shop that was perhaps the first spot to serve banh mi in Central New York and embodies everything it means for a restaurant to be called a “hole in the wall.”

Like so many great dishes, a proper banh mi is a story of contrast. The sandwich is typically served on a crusty baguette — a relic of French colonialism in Vietnam — that gets a schmear of mayonnaise (and traditionally, pork pate) before being filled with meat — typically pork. (Ky Duyen uses crusty, pointed Italian rolls for its sandwiches, a distinct nod to its Northside neighbors.)

At Vietnamese Noodle House, the banh mi ($9) comes filled with your choice of grilled chicken, grilled pork or Vietnamese ham, but the house special, which comes with pate, red-tinged roasted pork, a steamed pork sausage called Chả lụa and sliced grilled pork, is the move.

The Edge at Camillus Mills boasts 46 apartments at the site of the former Camillus Cutlery in the village of Camillus. (Revette Studios)

Newest apartments at former Camillus Cutlery factory offer creekside village living (photos) (PS; $; Moriarty)

Walk to village shops. Listen to the sound of water flowing on Nine Mile Creek from your balcony. Enjoy lots of natural light coming in through the large windows.

The newly opened Edge at Camillus Mills boasts 46 apartments -- 16 two-bedroom and 30 one-bedroom units -- on Main Street in the heart of the village of Camillus.

The three-story, $16 million building is the second phase of the Camillus Mills apartment complex on the site of the former Camillus Cutlery knife factory.

Tenants began moving in July 15, and The Edge is filling up fast.

“There are only eight units left,” said developer Doug Sutherland, one of the partners in Camillus Mills. “It’s really taking off. People really seem to like it.”

From the White House to world’s poorest reaches, Ruth Colvin spent 107 years changing the world (PS; $; Eisenstadt)

They are 1,700 miles apart:

A 10-acre plot of land in Haiti that has been revolutionizing how a community can sustain itself and a diner in Syracuse’s Westcott neighborhood that was the dream of a first-generation American family.

But they drew their starting breaths from the same place: the power of Ruth.

Ruth Colvin died Sunday at 107 at her home in Syracuse. She was the mother of the adult literacy movement. She taught hundreds of people to read in Syracuse and across the world, and she seeded organizations and wrote instructional manuals that taught tens of thousands more. But her legacy extends so much deeper in Central New York and across the world.

If you met Colvin, you knew her, and if you knew her, she left a mark on your heart.

There are multiple generations of families who pushed themselves to learn more, work harder, by being steeped in Colvin’s example.

She never quit, never accepted that something was not possible. And she didn’t entertain it as an option for anyone else.

Colvin built communities for more than 60 years, progressing from a middle-aged mother refusing to believe that 11,000 people in Onondaga County could not be taught to read to the leader of a movement that empowered people across the globe. She knit people together, working rooms from church halls to the board room to the White House.

She wrote 13 books; her last, finished shortly before her death, is unpublished.
