welcome to national lowercase day!

everyone is to type in lowercase all day today because it is national lowercase day. in ancient rome, the latin alphabet consisted of capital letters all of the same size called roman majuscule. after the fall of rome, capital letters that were more rounded emerged, called uncial script. half-uncial came about around the same time, with some letters that resembled today's lowercase letters. uncial and half-uncial were used throughout medieval times.

tracing their roots to the court of french king charlegmagne, the lowercase letters of today are called miniscule script. they were used by monks and scholars, who were scribes who made manuscripts by hand. this script was faster to write than uncial. this shift from uppercase to lowercase was on account of its handwriting ease, not because of writing rules; there weren't many capitalization rules in europe before 1300.

Avon Old Farms' cornerback Rayshon Andrews switched to the defensive backfield from receiver when he transferred in last year. He got a lesson on playing his new position from former Syracuse football coach Paul Pasqualoni.Brayden Dauphinais

Paul Pasqualoni taught Syracuse commit how to play corner: ‘He really took me to the next level’ (PS; $; Pignatello)

For the span of a month in the summer of 2023, Syracuse football commit Rayshon Andrews took to the field three times a week for two-hour sessions with one of Avon Old Farms’ gray-haired assistants.

Andrews, then a rising junior, had just transferred to Avon from Bristol Eastern High School (Connecticut) and was switching positions from the spot he’d played his entire life.

The 6-foot-4, 185-pounder had always been a receiver, but he was blocked at the position by some post-graduate transfers, and Avon head coach Jon Wholley suggested he try cornerback.

Andrews’ mother, Luatoya, stopped by at one of the early sessions.

“We watched, and he was just sitting with (Andrews) showing him some stuff,” Luatoya said. “And then after he came over and was like, ‘I’m Coach P.’

“Pasqua …? ”

“Yes,” he told her.

Though at first Andrews didn’t know, the coach who taught him the position he’ll play at Syracuse has some history with his future home. He was learning cornerback from Paul Pasqualoni, Syracuse’s head coach from 1991-2004.

“When I first met Coach P, I thought he was some random, older dude who coached at our school,” Andrews said. “Over time, I literally found out that he was one of the winningest coaches at Syracuse, coached in the NFL for multiple years.

“It was definitely like, ‘Wow,’ a whole learning point that some people, you might not know who they are but they could be one of the biggest life-changers that you have.”

Pasqualoni, who coached the defensive line at Avon Old Farms last year, taught Andrews the fundamentals of how to play cornerback that summer, and Andrews impressed in his first season at the position last year.

This season, Wholley said he expects Andrews to be the best defensive back in the NEPSAC, the top football league for New England prep schools.

Wholley was hired at Avon in 2021 and said Syracuse only visited two or three times under Dino Babers, who himself never showed.

Since Fran Brown’s hiring, a host of Syracuse coaches have visited the school the “maximum amount,” Wholley said, and Brown took a trip to Avon in January.

Wholley called Andrews into his office from class, and Brown offered him then. Later in January, Andrews came up to visit and watch a practice. He met some of the defensive backs on the team, and Justin Barron told him that Syracuse’s current staff was the best he had ever been around.

Three takeaways from Syracuse’s 24-17 win over NC State (TNIAAM; De Guzman)

Did you miss the ACC? The ACC missed you.

The Syracuse Orange seemed in control of their first ACC road game this season at the NC State Wolfpack. However, execution and mental mistakes made the game seem closer than the final score indicated. While Syracuse walked out of Carter-Finley Stadium as 24-17 winners, there were a multitude of reasons as to why the Orange could’ve enjoyed a more comfortable victory.

At the very least, Syracuse is 5-1 and one win away from reaching bowl eligibility under Fran Brown in his first season at the helm of the Orange. Here are our three takeaways from his first road win in CNY:

If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again

Syracuse only held a 10-7 lead at halftime. However, it felt like the Orange should have been leading by a lot more. A large reason for that was a lack of success in the red zone. Syracuse made three trips to the red zone in the first half. None of those visits resulted in a touchdown. The first one ended in a chip shot field goal. The second trip ended on a turnover on downs after Brown decided to go for a 4th-and-5 from the NC State 19 yard line. The third trip saw Syracuse make it to the 8-yard-line before a false start from Savion Washington and a sack took the Orange out of the red zone. Jadyn Oh missed the ensuing field goal.

'We haven't been playing Wolfpack football:' NC State players talk loss to Syracuse (247spports.com; Pyrtle)
NC State suffered another one-score loss in conference play Saturday night, falling 24-17 to Syracuse in Carter-Finley Stadium. Devon Betty, Noah Rogers and CJ Bailey spoke to the media over Zoom after the game about needing to take care of the football, keeping the team glued together and continuing to fight week in and week out.

Read the most notable quotes from Betty, Rogers and Bailey's postgame availability below.

Betty on key to keeping team together after this loss

"The key to it is to keep everybody glued together. It's tough. It's tough. When things like this happen, for most teams, the team starts to break up, separate, go their own way. Everybody starts doing their own thing. But here we've been through enough stuff together to know that we're all we've got. We're all we need. We know how to do it. We've got to stick together, move on and get back to work."

On Kamal Bonner's performance stepping in for Caden Fordham

"He did a phenomenal job today. You can't ask for anything better from a [redshirt freshman]. You can't ask for anything better. He stepped up. He did what he had to do. I hope he's going to continue to get better and move on to next week."

Rogers on turnovers at end of long drives

"I wouldn't necessarily say tough. I know our offense knows what we're doing. As we get down to the red zone, we turn the ball over. We're doing on pace. We've got to stay on schedule and keep executing. Focus. That's lack of focus, right there. Got to keep pushing."

On team sticking together

"We're either going to bend or break. There's a lot of guys in the locker room who's not going for that. I'm definitely not going for that. I'm going to keep playing. It's a blessing to play this game. Why would we stop here? There's still a lot of football ahead. A lot of the great things can happen. This is the turning point of the season where we go into the second half and change things around get things going.

Big Picture Takeaways for Syracuse Football against NC State Wolfpack | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse Orange Football took down NC State Wolfpack 24-17 at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, North Carolina last night. Kyle McCord has four main weapons he likes to target: Oronde Gadsden, Trebor Pena, Jackson Meeks, and LeQuint Allen. Syracuse Head Coach Fran Brown doesn't seem to trust Jadyn Oh or Brady Denaburg to kick field goals. Plus, the Orange are in a good spot in the ACC and for AP Top-25.

Jackson Holzer gives his main takeaways of Syracuse's win over NC State on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

Former Syracuse DB Andre Cisco said he saw ‘a lot of quit’ in Jags after loss Sunday (report) (PS; $; Carlson)

Former Syracuse safety Andre Cisco is one of many players frustrated by a bad turn in Jacksonville that has sent a franchise that looked primed to be an annual playoff contender spiraling.

The Jaguars have lost 10 of their last 12 games over the past two seasons, making head coach Doug Pederson’s job security a subject of constant speculation and ramping up questions about the future for any player in the organization.

Following a 35-16 home loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday that dropped Jacksonville to 1-5 this year, Cisco was blunt in the criticism of the team.

“It was real bad,” Cisco told Jacksonville television reporters about the feeling on the field. “I feel like, how should I say this, a lot of quit.”

Cisco said that the safety position is particularly aware of when players on the first two levels aren’t doing their jobs and that it creates a particularly treacherous situation when players are running unchallenged into the third level of the defense.

Bucs 2nd-year back Sean Tucker runs wild against Saints (tampabay.com; Stroud)

The Bucs had the league’s worst running game again last season.

They handed the football off only to give Baker Mayfield’s arm a rest.

But darned if the answer to their problem hasn’t been sitting on the bench since last season, not allowed to stretch his legs or opposing defenses.

In Sunday’s 51-27 win over the Saints, Sean Tucker finally got to tote the rock and the Bucs’ biggest offensive discovery turned out to be right under their noses.

Tucker, the second-year running back from Syracuse who had only 17 rushing attempts in the 16 games he’d played in prior to Sunday, led the Bucs with 136 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

His 36-yard touchdown reception gave the Bucs a 24-20 advantage in the second quarter.

“This is the Sean Tucker we thought we would get when we got him last year, and he’s coming into his own,” coach Todd Bowles said.

With starting tailback Rachaad White out with a foot injury, Tucker and rookie Bucky Irving provided the 1-2 punch in the backfield the Bucs have longed for.

Irving finished with 81 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown, including a 31-yard run. But it was Tucker who controlled the game in the second half, slashing and dashing around and through a tired Saints defense.

“For guys to be able to step in and play like that? That’s more than just the next man up mentality,” Mayfield said of Tucker. “That’s a huge jump he just took (Sunday) and I’m really, really happy for him.”

Tucker and Irving combined to only rush seven times in the first half. That was thanks to a combination of penalties and three Mayfield interceptions. The Bucs entered Sunday’s game as the least-flagged team in the NFL but finished with a season-high 12 penalties for 86 yards.

But in the second half, they put the game in the hands of Tucker, who left Syracuse after rushing for 3,182 career yards, just behind guys like Joe Morris and Walter Reyes, and ahead of players named Larry Csonka, Jim Brown, Floyd Little and Ernie Davis. In fact, he shattered the Orange’s single-season rushing record with 1,496 yards in 2021.

But coming out of Syracuse, he was flagged for a heart condition the day before his position group was supposed to run at the NFL scouting combine in March 2023.

That forced Tucker to go undrafted. But the Bucs still believed in his talent and signed him as an undrafted free agent.

“It’s just a testament to all the hard work I’ve been put into the game,” Tucker said of his performance Sunday. “And the work I did growing up. From me being here and getting an opportunity to show what I can do.”

ACC News

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5841536/2024/10/14/college-football-best-transfer-quarterbacks/ (nytimes.com; $; Khan Jr)

There are few more reliable sources of offseason hope in college football these days than the arrival of a transfer quarterback. A fresh face behind center can entice fans into changing their whole outlook on a team.

But some transfer quarterbacks hit, and others don’t. The 2024 season has had plenty of both so far. Now that we’ve reached the season’s midpoint, let’s take a look at which teams have done well with their transfer takes, which ones are still looking for answers and which ones have had injuries and other details create an uncertain outlook in mid-October.

ACC

Winner: Miami. The Hurricanes are undefeated thanks in large part to Heisman Trophy candidate Cam Ward. No transfer quarterback has thrown for more yards than Ward’s 2,219. The former Washington State and Incarnate Word passer is 15th among all FBS QBs in completion percentage (69.2) and is tied for the FBS lead with 20 touchdown passes.

Loser: Florida State. The Seminoles’ season has been a disaster, and the play of DJ Uiagalelei hasn’t helped. Of the 41 transfer quarterbacks with at least 100 dropbacks this season, Uiagalelei has the worst passing efficiency, according to TruMedia. He has completed just 53.8 percent of his passes for four touchdowns and six interceptions and missed the Clemson game with a finger injury. After going 13-1 a year ago, FSU is 1-5 in 2024.

Winner: Syracuse. Former Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord has been a huge addition for the surprisingly 5-1 Orange. He ranks third nationally in passing yards (2,160) and second in the ACC in passing yards per game (360) and touchdown passes (19).

Incomplete: North Carolina. Former LSU and Texas A&M quarterback Max Johnson entered the year as the starter but broke his right leg in the season opener and will miss the rest of the year. It’s tough luck for Johnson, who suffered season-ending injuries in each of his two seasons at A&M. Jacolby Criswell, who started his career at UNC but spent 2023 at Arkansas and returned to Chapel Hill via the portal this offseason, has started the last four games, but the Tar Heels have lost all four. UNC’s issues have gone well beyond the quarterback position.

Winner: Pitt. Eli Holstein, a former blue-chip signee at Alabama, has dazzled in new coordinator Kade Bell’s offense. Holstein threw three touchdown passes in each of his first five starts before turning in his first underwhelming performance of the year in Saturday’s tight win over Cal. But Pitt is 6-0, and Holstein is a big reason. He’s third in the ACC in passing yards and has 15 touchdowns with five interceptions.

Incomplete: NC State. Coastal Carolina transfer Grayson McCall has only played two full games during the Wolfpack’s frustrating first half. He left a Week 3 win over Louisiana Tech with an injury and missed the next two games, pressing freshman CJ Bailey into action. McCall returned against Wake Forest on Oct. 5, took a huge hit from multiple defenders and was stretchered off and taken to the hospital before being released.

Winner: Louisville. Seventh-year senior and former Oregon and Texas Tech starter Tyler Shough had a terrific first three weeks, averaging 11.2 yards per attempt with no interceptions in the Cardinals’ 3-0 start. The last three weeks have been much more uneven, as Shough has posted a 59.8 completion percentage and thrown for 824 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions while the Cards have gone 1-2. But he led a clutch game-winning drive Saturday to lift Louisville to a win over Virginia and keep the Cards in the ACC chase, and he has the league’s best touchdown-to-interception ratio (14-to-3).

Incomplete: Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons are 2-4, but Hank Bachmeier, the former Louisiana Tech and Boise State starter, put up solid numbers in narrow losses to Virginia and Louisiana and also led a win at NC State.

Winner: Duke. Texas transfer Maalik Murphy led Duke to a 5-1 start but still has some room to grow in his first year as a full-time starter. His 14-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio is solid, but his completion percentage (60.1 percent) could stand to rise. He was over 61 percent in each of his first four starts but under that mark in the last two weeks, a 21-20 win over North Carolina and a 24-14 loss to Georgia Tech.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5840813/2024/10/14/college-football-fbs-team-rankings-midseason/ (nytimes.com; $; Vannini)

If there’s one lesson to be learned from the first half of this college football season, it’s that the gap between the top teams and the middle-tier teams looks as small as it’s been in a very long time.

It’s a new week, and we have yet another new No. 1 in The Athletic 134. Welcome to the top, Oregon.

The reasoning is straightforward: The Ducks are undefeated and have one of the two best wins of the season after beating Ohio State 32-31 in a thriller in Eugene. It was the first win over a team in the AP poll’s top two in Oregon history and the program’s first real big win under coach Dan Lanning, one that was desperately needed. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel played one of the best games of his career, receiver Evan Stewart looked like the five-star talent he entered college football as, and the defense made enough plays.

The win puts the Ducks in the driver’s seat to reach the Big Ten championship game and get a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff. And given the surprises we’ve seen so far this season, having a bye could be massive.

Oregon needed to come back late to beat Boise State and struggled with FCS program Idaho early in the season. Perhaps the gap between No. 1 Oregon and No. 16 Boise State is not that far. Perhaps the gap between Alabama and Vanderbilt is not far. Even Georgia couldn’t bury a Mississippi State team that was plastered by Toledo a few weeks ago. Who are the great, elite teams? I’m not sure there is one this season.

Whether that uncertainty is a product of NIL, transfers, coaching changes or a combination of it all, this has been one of the most fun and unexpected college football seasons in a long time. We’re in store for many more exciting Saturdays, and then perhaps a postseason that will be more open than we initially envisioned.

Here is this week’s Athletic 134.

Aside from Oregon’s elevation to No. 1, the big move here is Alabama dropping from No. 3 to No. 7. I got a lot of heat for keeping Alabama in the top three after its loss to Vanderbilt. My reasoning was that Alabama and Georgia were still on the same tier, and their head-to-head result informed that ranking. Not anymore. After barely hanging on for a 27-25 win against South Carolina, Alabama is tumbling. The Crimson Tide have now played five consecutive halves of bad football since halftime against Georgia. This team is going in the wrong direction.

This is the week the bowl projections took a turn.

Now there are more losses piling up for some, upsets are starting to matter more, and now there aren't as many options as there were before.

And the strength of the remaining schedules start to look clearer.

For example, the winner of the Minnesota-Wisconsin game will likely go to a bowl, and the loser could be in real trouble.

And then there are teams like North Carolina, Rutgers, and UCF who appeared to be locks just last week, and now will struggle to get an extra game.

Going into Week 8, here are our latest bowl projections.

ACC standings following Week 7 of the 2024 season (usatoday.com; Fowler)

Week 7 of the 2024 college football season was rather slow for the ACC, with only six games including teams from the conference. In these six games, five of them were in-conference matchups, leading to some movement in the ACC standings.

The standalone non-conference game featured the Stanford Cardinal taking on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. However, the weekend was far from boring, as all but one of the ACC matchups ended as a one-score game. The only game that was a blowout was the Clemson Tigers handling Wake Forest 49-14.

As we are now past the halfway point in the season, the teams at the top appear to be pulling away in the standings, which could lead to us knowing who will be fighting for the ACC trophy weeks before the game is to be played. However, if there is one thing we know about college football, it’s that anything can happen.

Now that all of the Week 7 action is in the books, here’s an updated look at the ACC standings.

ACC Power Rankings: Week Eight (SI; Caudell)

While week seven was crazy around the landscape of college football, it was relatively mild around the ACC. A lot of teams were on their bye week and not one underdog won outright this week.

Clemson struggled slightly early in their game, but won 49-14. Cal came all the way across the country and played Pitt tough, but fell short in the end. Georgia Tech won a crazy game vs North Carolina, Louisville avoided the upset vs Virginia, and Syracuse got the road win vs NC State.

So how did yesterday shape the ACC power rankings this week?

17. NC State (3-4, 0-3). Last week: 17

NC State battled at home against Syracuse last night, but fell short in the end and they still remain winless in the ACC. The offense is still struggling to get anything going and that is not going to get any easier when they have to travel across the country and face Cal.

16. Florida State (1-5, 1-4). Last week: 16

Florida State was off this week and is back in action next Friday vs Duke

15. Wake Forest (2-4, 1-2). Last week: 15

Wake Forest fought very early in this game, but they did not have enough to hang around with Clemson. The offense was a little disappointing in the loss yesterday, even considering the opponent they were playing. A road trip to UConn is next on the schedule.

14. Stanford (2-4, 1-2). Last week: 13

It was all ugly for Stanford yesterday at Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish handled Stanford after the Cardinal got out to an early 7-0 lead and now Stanford is now 2-4. Things won't get any easier next week when they host SMU, who looks like one of the ACC's top teams right now.

13. North Carolina (3-4, 0-3). Last week: 14

The Tar Heels battled back against Georgia Tech yesterday, but the defense once again let them down by giving up nearly 400 yards rushing and over 500 yards total. The offense was not great throughout the day, but they were not the main reason for this team losing its fourth straight game. A bye week is coming at an appropriate time for the Tar Heels.

12. Virginia Tech (3-3, 1-1). Last week: 12

Virginia Tech was off on Saturday and will be back in action next Thursday against Boston College.

11. Cal (3-3, 0-3). Last week: 11

Cal has lost all three of their ACC games by a combined eight points. This team is very close to being undefeated and in the conference title race, but they have come up short for various reasons every week, the latest one being a two-point loss to Pitt on the road. Credit Cal for being able to come back and keep playing hard, but at some point you have to finish and win games. They host NC State next week and should be favored at home.

10. Boston College (4-2, 1-1). Last week: 10

Boston College was off this weekend and will be back in action next Thursday against Virginia Tech on the road.

9. Duke (5-1, 1-1). Last week: 9

Duke was off this weekend and they will be back in action next Friday vs Florida State

8. Virginia (4-2, 2-1). Last week: 8

Virginia played very weel in their game vs Louisville yesterday, but they came up just short against the Cardinals and lost 24-20. Anthony Colandrea threw for 279 yards, with Malachi Fields having 129 of them. It was a good effort from UVA, but they are going to need an even better effort on the road vs Clemson next week.

7. Georgia Tech (5-2, 3-2). Last week: 7

The Yellow Jackets nearly let the game against North Carolina slip through their fingers yesterday, but a dominant running game and the defense coming up with timely stops got them the win. Running back Jamal Haynes had the signature moment of the game with his 68-yard touchdown with 16 seconds remaining in the game. The big question coming out of this game is about the health of quarterback Haynes King, who left in the 4th quarter of the game yesterday. A huge matchup against Notre Dame is on deck for Brent Key's team.

6. Syracuse (5-1, 2-1). Last week: 6

The Orange went on the road to Raleigh and got the win vs NC State and Kyle McCord continues to put up numbers. McCord threw for 346 yards vs the Wolfpack, but the defense did give up over 400 yards to an NC State offense that had been struggling to do anything as of late. The Orange have a bye week next week before they begin the second half of their schedule.

5. Louisville (4-2, 2-1). Last week: 5

The Cardinals remain at No. 5 this week, but they did not look their best against Virginia yesterday, especially on defense. Virginia was able to put up 449 yards of offense yesterday against the Cardinals defense and that is not a good sign with Heisman contender Cam Ward and the Miami offense coming into town next week. If the Cardinals want to show they are an ACC contender, they need to get a win next week.

ACC Power Rankings After Week 7: Clemson rules top spot ahead of Miami again (fightinggobbler.com; Roche)

There were not many ACC teams this weekend, but boy, what a weekend it was. Virginia Tech had their first of two byes along with Boston College and Miami, but the games made it a fun weekend of college football.

Virginia lost 24-20 at home to Louisville in a back-and-forth second half and Pittsburgh remained undefeated after California missed a potential game-winning field goal in the final minute. The wildest game of the day was in Chapel Hill, North Carolina where Georgia Tech scored late for a 41-34 win over the Tar Heels. Syracuse held off North Carolina State,24-17, to improve to 5-1 in Year 1 of Fran Brown, Clemson blasted Wake Forest and Stanford was blown out at Notre Dame.

As we look ahead to Week 8 that will begin Thursday night when Boston College comes to Blacksburg for an interesting game between two teams that are in need of a victory, here is this week's edition of the ACC Football Power Rankings.

ACC power rankings after Week 7: Clemson earns another blowout win (saturdaydownsouth.com; Davis)

Week 7 of ACC play is complete.

It was a mostly-quiet week for the ACC as undefeated (in conference play) teams like Miami and SMU were both off. There also weren’t any major upsets this week — Clemson, Pitt, Louisville, Syracuse and Georgia Tech all took care of business against teams lower down in the rankings. Still, there is a bit of movement this week as we continue to learn more about these teams.

Here’s Saturday Down South’s updated ACC Week 7 power rankings:

17. NC State (Previously: 17)

Another tough loss for NC State this weekend. The Wolfpack have a young team and have earned the last-place spot on this list. With that being said, they do still have a somewhat-realistic chance to go bowling without beating anyone higher than 12th on this ranking. Stanford, Duke and UNC remain on the schedule. NC State also has games at Cal and Georgia Tech that are theoretically winnable.

16. Wake Forest (Previously: 15)

Wake Forest got smoked by Clemson this week. The Demon Deacons looked like they were going to hang around in this game for awhile, but they turned it over twice and only had 3 third-down conversions all day.

15. Florida State (Previously: 16)

FSU was idle in Week 7.

14. Stanford (Previously: 14)

Stanford got pummeled by Notre Dame on Saturday. Ashton Daniels was back in the lineup this week, but the Cardinal were still uncompetitive on offense.

13. North Carolina (Previously: 13)

North Carolina has lost 4 in a row since its 3-0 start to the season.

12. Duke (Previously: 12)

Duke was off this weekend.

11. Boston College (Previously: 11)

Boston College did not play in Week 7.

10. Virginia (Previously: 9)

Tough loss for Virginia at home against Louisville. There’s still a path to bowl eligibility this season, though.

9. Virginia Tech (Previously: 10)

Virginia Tech was idle in Week 7.

8. Cal (Previously: 8)

Cal lost another heartbreaker at Pitt. The Golden Bears have acquitted themselves well this season in the ACC, but they haven’t been rewarded for it yet.

7. Georgia Tech (Previously: 7)

Georgia Tech beat North Carolina on an improbable 68-yard touchdown run from Jamal Haynes at the end of regulation. The Yellow Jackets needed that one.

6. Syracuse (Previously: 5)

Syracuse beat NC State by 7. It was far from convincing for the Orange, who allowed a putrid NC State offense to move the ball pretty well on Saturday. But a win is a win.

5. Louisville (Previously: 6)

Louisville squeaked out a win over Virginia on the road. The Cardinals were up big early, but ultimately needed a touchdown with 1:55 remaining to take the lead for good. Louisville has not been as impressive over the past few weeks, but Jeff Brohm’s team has a big test next weekend against Miami.

For the first time in program history, N.C. State football hits the road this week to face newly minted ACC member California and it’ll miss its leading tackler.

Wolfpack Radio reported after the team’s 24-17 loss to Syracuse that Mike linebacker Caden Fordham is out for the season after being injured in practice.

Entering the game, Fordham led the team with 48 tackles. This season, the Wolfpack has already lost defensive end Red Hibbler. He led the program in sacks in 2023 but opted to redshirt and will transfer at the end of the year.

Devon Betty started in the middle against the Orange, with Sean Brown and Kamal Bonner on either side. Betty said after the game that Fordham’s absence was a big change.

“I played Mike all last year, but the thing for me this week was just to get my voice back out,” Betty said Saturday. “I’ve been a little quiet, because I’ve been on the outside. I kind of just been letting Sean and Caden handle the Mike position. Me moving back in the middle, I had to step up and use my voice again more than I usually do.”

Betty finished the game with 10 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, one quarterback hurry and a pass breakup.

N.C. State trailed by as many as 10 points but clawed back to make it a one-possession game. Head coach Dave Doeren said on Thursday that the team wanted to finish well, something it didn’t do against Wake Forest. He was proud of the effort in late-game situations.

“To see them come back like that shows me they’ve got a lot of fight,” Doeren said. “I am proud of them for that, for coming back and fighting and giving us a chance to have a one-possession game there down the stretch.”

The Wolfpack will have to focus on finishing drives well, regardless of who plays at linebacker this week, if it wants to prevent starting 0-4 in league play for the first time since 2014. It went winless in 2013 and only won one conference game in 2019.

Meanwhile, Cal started the season 3-0 but has lost three straight ACC games, all of which were decided by five points or fewer. Its 39-38 loss to Miami came down to a controversial call that was ruled in the Hurricanes’ favor.

Friedlander: Biggest takeaways from Week 7 around the ACC (saturdaydownsouth.com; Friedlander)

So much for home-field advantage.

The visiting team won 4 of the 5 conference matchups on the ACC’s condensed Week 7 schedule with Clemson, Georgia Tech, Louisville and Syracuse all notching victories away from home, Their success continues a trend that has seen road teams go 10-3 over the past 2 weeks in league games.

That’s not the only recurring theme that played out Saturday.

Four of those 5 conference games were decided by a touchdown or less. With 3 – Georgia Tech-North Carolina, Pitt-Cal and Louisville-Virginia – coming down to decisive plays in the final 2 minutes.

Those kinds of close games have been the norm in the ACC this season. Fourteen of the first 25 conference games that have been decided by 7 or fewer points. Clemson’s 49-14 win at Wake Forest was the only outlier Saturday.

Just one more example of the parity that exists around the league.

But that’s not the only thing we learned about the ACC in Week 7. Here are some of the other big takeaways:

Tar Heels find another new way to lose

You have to give Mack Brown’s team credit for creativity. The Tar Heels’ season might be circling the bowl at a rapid pace, but they still haven’t run out of new ways to lose.

The downward spiral began on Sept. 21 with the 70-burger they allowed against James Madison. Then came the 2nd half meltdown in which they squandered a 20-0 lead against rival Duke, followed by another close loss to Pittsburgh punctuated by Brown’s unsuccessful 4th down gambles.

Saturday’s 41-34 setback to Georgia Tech may have been the most devastating yet.

UNC put itself in a position to earn a season-saving victory by rallying from a 10-point deficit in the final 3½ minutes. But in the process of celebrating Noah Burnette’s tying field goal with 44 seconds remaining, the Tar Heels forgot to play defense.

Instead of going to overtime against an opponent whose starting quarterback was sidelined with an injury – and who appeared to be satisfied with running out the clock in regulation – UNC watched Jamal Haynes break free for a 68-yard run for the winning touchdown.

And that wasn’t even the worst thing that happened to the Tar Heels on Saturday. After the game, they received the news that teammate Tylee Craft had lost his battle with cancer. Craft was honored in a moving ceremony between the 1st and 2nd quarters that saw Brown reduced to tears as he hugged his ailing player’s mother.

The emotional toll of Craft’s death, combined with the 4-game losing streak, has only intensified speculation about Brown’s future at UNC after this season.

Orange back in the end zone

Clemson’s red-zone struggles last week at Florida State were the cause of at least some minor angst among Tigers fans.

Not to worry.

It took a full quarter to remember how to get there. But after settling for 7 field goal attempts in the 29-13 win against the Seminoles and getting shut out for the first 15 minutes at Wake Forest, Cade Klubnik and his offense finally found their way back into the end zone Saturday.

Klubnik hit Antonio Williams from 22 yards out for the first of his 3 touchdown passes, sparking a 28-point 2nd period that got the 10th-ranked Tigers rolling again. Williams also threw a touchdown pass while Phil Mafah ran for a pair of scores to help Clemson earn its 5th straight win – all by at least 2-score margins – since its opening week loss to Georgia.

The Tigers rolled up 566 total yards (343 passing and 223 rushing) while playing a clean game without a turnover.

“We’re just resilient in everything we do,” Klubnik said after the game. “Just to finish the way we did was awesome.”

https://allsportsdiscussion.com/2024/10/13/acc-coach-of-the-year-mid-season-candidates/ (RX; HM)

Amazing we’ve reached the midpoint of the college football season already. Who’s leading the ACC COY race?

Let’s take a look.

1) Pat Narduzzi – Pittsburgh

Here is your front-runner Pat Narduzzi of Pittsburgh. The Panthers were the pre-season picked to finish 13th in the ACC, and stand 6-0 and ranked in the top 25. The offense is one of the country’s best, and the defense is starting to catch up. Pittsburgh obviously couldn’t have started better.

2) Mario Cristobal – Miami

Mario Cristobal has Miami the highest-ranked ACC team in the top 25, and off to a 6-0 start. Cam Ward is on the short list of Heisman candidates. Not much separates Cristobal and Narduzzi, except I think Pitt is a better team now than at the start of the year and I’m not sure I can say that about Miami.

3) Fran Brown – Syracuse

It took no time for Fran Brown to turn things around at Syracuse. The ACC’s pre-season 12th place team has exceeded expectations more than anyone in the ACC outside of Pittsburgh, as they’ve gotten off to a 5-1 start. QB Kyle McCord has been a tremendous transfer pickup out of Ohio State. There s a bit of a surprising loss to Stanford, but that’s the only blemish in an otherwise great start to the season.

4) Rhett Lashlee – SMU

Rhett Lashlee has SMU in the top 25, off to a 5-1 start, and currently undefeated in the ACC. Early in the year was a shaky performance against Nevada, but Lashlee made the personal move of the year inserting QB Kevin Jennings into the starting lineup over Preston Stone.

5) Manny Diaz – Duke

A lot of us thought Duke was about to slip back this year, but new head coach Manny Diaz made sure that hasn’t happened. The Blue Devils raced out to a 5-0 start including a win over arch rival UNC. They also won at Northwestern. Had they beat Georgia Tech in their most recent game, I’d have Diaz in the top 3, but still, the Duke start has him among ACC COY candidates.

6) Dabo Swinney – Clemson

Dabo Swinney has the highest of expectations at Clemson, and out of the gate, the Tigers laid an egg in a 34-3 loss to Georgia. Since then Clemson is 5-0 with double-digit wins over everyone of their opponents. Some think the Tigers are actually the ACC’s best team. We’ll see about that, but Swinney deserves a look because along with SMU, they are the most improved teams in the ACC

Clemson will be favored to get their 6th win next weekend over Virginia. Regardless of records, I think Duke will be the underdog to FSU. Notre Dame will have a tough ACC road test in Atlanta against a Yellow Jackets team that's searching for #6 themselves (see below). SMU will be favored, but Stanford has talent (except at quarterback, that is). Syracuse is idle but plays Pitt the following week.

Links, News and Rumors 2024 Oct 14

From ESPN+: Projecting the College Football Playoff top 12 at midseason, here are the two ACC teams mentioned...

7. Miami Hurricanes (6-0)

Why they could be here: After back-to-back weeks of down-to-the-wire thrillers, the bye week came at an opportune time, giving Miami a much-needed reset before heading to Louisville. The Canes would move up or down during a bye week only as a result of teams around them fluctuating. Miami still doesn't have a win against a ranked opponent, but the committee would recognize a difficult cross-country road win against an improving Cal team. And while the Canes have played only one game outside of their home state, the committee would still respect the true road win against rival Florida.
Why they could be higher: Miami is still undefeated, and Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State are not.
Need to know: Miami doesn't play Pitt or Clemson during the regular season, so it might finish without one win against a ranked opponent -- something that will hold it back in the committee meeting room only if it doesn't win the ACC. If the Canes finish as a one-loss runner-up without any wins against CFP top-25 teams, the committee's evaluation of strength of schedule will be critical. Will the committee reward Miami, or a two-loss team from the SEC that played a tougher schedule? Or will there be room for both? To avoid the debate, Miami needs to win its conference.
Toughest remaining game: Saturday at Louisville

8. Clemson Tigers (5-1)

Why they could be here: Since the season-opening loss to Georgia, Clemson has reeled off five straight wins and scored at least 40 points in four of them. The Tigers also added back-to-back road wins to their résumé. Still, none of those wins have been against ranked opponents and none of them have a winning record. That's something that will hold them back in the committee meeting room, especially when most, if not all, contenders ranked above them have played a tougher schedule and/or are undefeated. The committee would also still honor Georgia's season-opening win against the Tigers, and Clemson probably would be behind Bama because the Tide was able to beat Georgia and Clemson did not.
Why they could be higher: Unlike Alabama (South Carolina), Georgia (Mississippi State) and Miami (Virginia Tech and Cal), Clemson has manhandled every unranked team it has faced. In the past, the committee has been wowed by a team's sheer dominance as a way of compensating for a weaker schedule, and those teams typically have NFL-caliber talent to prove it.
Need to know: Clemson's November games against Pitt and South Carolina give the Tigers slightly more wiggle room than Miami as an at-large contender if they don't win the ACC -- at least right now. The committee takes into account rivalry games, and Clemson still has South Carolina, which proved it has a defense against Bama on Saturday. Getting a road win against a ranked Pitt team that is currently undefeated would also be valued by the group.
Toughest remaining game: Nov. 16 at Pitt

All day and all night long, it was two-for-one well drinks at Zebb’s Deluxe Grill & Bar in Mattydale. Same for wine. And beer? It was whatever they had left. The Miller Lite and Labatt taps ran dry days ago, but they had a few bottles left in the worn-out coolers.

“Say goodbye to the tequila, everyone!” bartender Stacey Ossit announced to a packed bar at 1:04 p.m. Saturday.

“Bye, tequila,” the daydrinkers responded.

She dumped the last drop of Patron into a rocks glass with orange juice and grenadine. That tequila sunrise chased down one of the last burgers any customer would eat in this restaurant hidden in the back of a nearly deserted Kmart plaza.

Zebb’s is closing for good on Sunday, after serving Central New York burgers alongside an 8-foot toppings bar in its retro-style dining room for more than 40 years.

Richard Zdyb opened Zebb’s back in the 1980s. At one time, the local chain had two restaurants in Rochester and one in New Hartford. Zdyb sold it to Brian Bergeron in 2006. As the business fell off, Chris Damick took over this last-standing Zebb’s in 2022.

Since announcing the restaurant would shut down, customers over the past six days were greeted with two-hour waits for a table for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.

At 6:30 p.m. Friday, management taped a sign on the front door announcing they were taking no more customers for the night.

https://www.syracuse.com/news/2024/...operty-purchase-near-micron-site-in-clay.html (PS; $; Moriarty)

A small local savings bank has decided being across the street from a massive semiconductor factory would be good for business.

Seneca Savings paid $1.9 million for a 2.6-acre property at 5332 State Route 31 in Clay on Sept. 6. The site is directly across the street from where Micron Technology Inc. is planning to build a $100 billion semiconductor fabrication plant.

Bank President and CEO Joseph Vitale said the bank plans to build a branch on the land.

Construction likely will start about a year from now after the bank obtains the necessary municipal approvals, with an opening six to eight months later, he said.

The site is occupied by Clifton Recycling Inc., a landscape supplies company, which is expected to remain there under a lease with the bank until the branch is built. Clifton’s owner, Randy Reynolds, also owns Clifton Equipment, a farm equipment dealership, next door. It was not included in the sale.

Reynolds paid $220,000 for the property almost 10 years ago, and the town of Clay has it assessed at $265,455. But Micron’s selection of the land across the street for a huge chip plant is driving up prices in the area.

The new branch will be Seneca Savings’ sixth office (and second in Clay).

Micron Technology announced in 2022 that it had selected White Pine Commerce Park on Route 31 for a semiconductor fabrication plant.

Micron says the plant will cost up to $100 billion to build over 20 years and create up to 9,000 jobs at the facility and 40,000 more in the community over the same period.

The Micron site is on the north side of Route 31, directly across the street from the land where Seneca Savings will build its brand.

Vitale said the bank has been looking for a site in the northern part of Clay since before Micron’s announcement. It wound up choosing the property on the south side of Route 31 because of the traffic that already travels on the road — and the traffic that will be going by once Micron opens its plant.

“It’s not solely because of Micron,” he said. “It’s close to the Route 11 corridor. And it gets a lot of traffic even without Micron.”

Seneca Savings’ other branches are in Baldwinsville, Liverpool, Manlius, North Syracuse and Bridgeport.

The branch in Clay will have a room for community groups and businesses to hold meetings, Vitale said.

Many banks are doing away with physical branches as online banking services take their place. But Vitale said Seneca Savings believes physical branches still matter.

“It’s not dead,” he said. “The footprint is much smaller. We don’t need big teller stations. But we do need a place to give customers advice and guidance and help them open an account.”

Work on the new Erie Canal Pickleball Center in DeWitt is underway in DeWitt Town Center.

The former Sky Zone trampoline park is being converted into a pickleball center.

The center will have nine indoor pickleball courts, along with a full-service restaurant and bar, said William Cleary, who owns the town center, along with Grazi Zazzara. Cleary is setting up the pickleball center.

"We think this is the perfect location for this,” Cleary said.

Chase Bilodeau, the town of DeWitt’s former police chief who left the department suddenly this spring, will be operations manager for the center, Cleary said.

Another 20 people will be hired for full and part-time jobs.

The 25,000-square-foot former Sky Zone is being renovated. The location is right where the Erie Canal used to run, and 7-foot-high graphics inside the center depict scenes from the canal.

The center should open in early November, Cleary said.

Along with pickleball, its mezzanine will feature a restaurant and bar. There will be seating for about 60 patrons, and people can sit overlooking the courts if they choose to do so, he said.

The restaurant will serve pizza, salads, sandwiches and more.

There also is a party room guests can reserve for events like birthdays.

After nine years of success in its location just south of the Syracuse University campus, Willow Rock Brewing Co. is expanding to a second location.

Willow Rock’s new taproom is scheduled to open in time for the holiday season at 6200 South Bay Road in Cicero. That location was home to Hot House Brewing at Barone Gardens until that brewery closed in August.

Willow Rock will take the retail space in the former Hot House brewery as a tasting room, said Rockney Roberts, who co-owns the brewery with Kevin Williams. It will have 14 taps serving the range of Willow Rock beers, Roberts said.

All brewing will remain at the current Willow Rock location, 115 Game Road. That brewery and tasting room is off Ainsley Drive, near Brighton Avenue south of the SU campus.

Willow Rock produces a wide range of regular and seasonal beers (such as its fall seasonal Hoi Hoi Hoi!, a malty Märzen / Oktoberfest style). It is also the producer of Congress beer, a modern take on the lager once made by Syracuse’s last pre-craft brewery, Haberle.

The Cicero taproom will have food provided by BrewGrub, an affiliate of Willow Rock that also serves the Game Road brewery. Soups, sandwiches, burgers and more will be served from an indoor kitchen in Cicero.

“We’re thrilled to bring Willow Rock to Cicero,” Williams said in a statement provided by the brewery. “This new location will allow us to connect with our customers in new and exciting ways, while making it easier for people north of Syracuse to enjoy our craft beers and BrewGrub food. We’re excited to open our doors, hopefully just in time for the holiday season.”

This marks the third time in the last few years that an existing craft brewer has opened a satellite location in a recently closed brewery in the northern suburbs.

IBU Brewing at 3703 Brewerton Road in North Syracuse closed in 2020 amid the Covid pandemic. That location has since reopened as a taproom for the McGraw Box Brewing of Cortland County.
