Welcome to Love Your Body Day!
The entertainment, cosmetics, fashion, and dieting industries, and media such as television and magazines, pressure young women to achieve an unattainable body image. They objectify and sexualize them, tell them their primary function is to be admired and desired for their looks, and tell them that their body always needs improvement. The beauty criteria imposed upon women and girls are narrow, unrealistic, and sometimes even hazardous to health. Love Your Body Day is for fighting back.

Started by the NOW Foundation in 1998, Love Your Body Day is a day that challenges "the unrealistic beauty standards and gender stereotypes promoted by the media, Hollywood and the fashion, cosmetics and diet industries," and "a day when women of all sizes, colors, ages and abilities come together to celebrate self-acceptance and to promote positive body image." Events that raise awareness about body image and women's health issues are hosted across the United States by NOW advocates and women's advocates. Since 2012, Love Your Body Day has been part of the NOW Foundation's Love Your Body Campaign.

Film Review: Big plays hindered Syracuse’s chances vs. NC State (DO; Andrews)

Box-score watchers would’ve been fairly stunned at Syracuse’s result versus NC State Saturday. The Wolfpack averaged an impeccable 9.1 yards per play, while the Orange lagged behind at just 5.6. Yet, NC State’s offense was at a standstill for most of the game while SU’s side moved with ease.

The Orange defeated the Wolfpack 24-17 courtesy of a season-best performance from their defense, led by first-year defensive coordinator Elijah Robinson. Syracuse forced three turnovers, including a fumble recovery and interception by Justin Barron, to stall NC State’s offense across midfield. It was more than enough relief for Kyle McCord — who finished with 346 passing yards and two touchdowns — to steer the Orange to victory.

But while Syracuse’s defense won the game with takeaways, its weak point was glaring: consistently allowing big plays from the Wolfpack. The Orange gave up six offensive plays of more than 20 yards, three of which were over 40 yards and two over 70 yards.

The seven-point differential by the game’s end was much closer than it needed to be, due to SU’s issues containing explosive gains.

Here’s a breakdown of four big plays that Syracuse (5-1, 2-1 ACC) allowed against NC State (3-4, 0-3 ACC) Saturday:

2nd quarter, 2:00 — Concepcion beats Chestnut

This was the longest play SU gave up in the first half. NC State star wide receiver Kevin Concepcion hauled in a 42-yard reception on its final drive before halftime, which resulted in a touchdown to cut Syracuse’s lead to 10-7. And he did it by torching safety Duce Chestnut.

On this play, a first-and-10 from the Wolfpack 36-yard line, NC State split four receivers out wide in a single-back set while the Orange displayed their traditional 4-2-5 look. Chestnut lined up across from Concepcion in the slot. SU played a single-high safety — Alijah Clark — while the rest of its secondary went into man-to-man. Clark was on the opposite side of Chestnut, though, which proved to be this play’s downfall.

Chestnut lost the unfavorable matchup from the get-go, as Concepcion stutter-stepped to his left and scooted up the left sideline. NC State quarterback CJ Bailey immediately spotted the one-on-one battle and tossed a high-arcing pass that Concepcion easily corralled over his right shoulder. Chestnut made a solid effort to catch up with the receiver and secured the tackle, but the damage was already done.

3rd quarter, 12:50 — Bailey gets free

Bailey, a true freshman, isn’t much of a rusher, standing at 6-foot-6. Though against Syracuse, he made it pay with his legs. Bailey led the Wolfpack with 43 rushing yards on seven attempts, and here, he made his gaudiest impact on the ground.

NC State lined up in 11 personnel on a second-and-6, with one tight end positioned beside the right tackle. It split three receivers out right in a trips formation and had one running back, Hollywood Smothers, to Bailey’s left. The Orange were in 4-2-5 again, yet their defense was naturally shifted left to accommodate for the Wolfpack’s formation — which Bailey took advantage of.

Jonathan Paylor motioned from the slot to receive a play-action fake from Bailey. Smothers slipped to the right flat for a screen, but Syracuse linebacker Derek McDonald and defensive lineman Denis Jaquez Jr. hounded Bailey from the start off the left edge. In response, Bailey jumped up, planted his right foot and dashed upfield, leaving McDonald and Jaquez Jr. lost.

Syracuse’s defense was already crowding the right side of the field, allowing Bailey to scamper along the left hash marks with only one man to beat — Chestnut, who he easily ran past. A downfield block from Justin Joly on Jayden Bellamy helped seal Bailey’s path to accumulating a 28-yard gain.

4th quarter, 9:45 — A blown coverage of epic proportions

Up 24-7 with less than 10 minutes to play, this should have been time for Syracuse to seal the inevitable. Instead, it became close. On a second-and-10 from NC State’s 25-yard line, it was one of two 70-plus yard receptions for the Wolfpack in the fourth quarter.

Syracuse football isn’t hiding behind its wins. It knows it hasn’t played up to its potential – ‘At all’ (PS; $; Leiker)

Syracuse football won its second straight road game Saturday at N.C. State. It’s the first time the Orange won road games in back-to-back weeks since 2012.

SU is 5-1, tied for second in the ACC and winning the type of close games it routinely lost in recent seasons.

By most metrics, and certainly the important ones, Syracuse is having a successful season.

For those watching, coaching and, most importantly, among the players themselves, there is an acknowledgment that a sizable list of things remain that require either fixing or fine-tuning for the success to continue.

“This wasn’t a pretty football game that we played on our end,” Syracuse head coach Fran Brown said after the Orange beat the Wolfpack. “We did a lot of things that weren’t right. ... We got a long way to go. We’re nowhere near where we can be.”

Every game Syracuse has remaining on its schedule is winnable — yes, that includes ACC favorite Miami, which has barely squeaked out wins against Virginia Tech and Cal in recent weeks. Syracuse faces those two teams shortly, with Miami to close the season.

Winning out the remaining six games, or even four or five, will require Syracuse to deliver a complete four-quarter performance.

The Orange hasn’t accomplished that yet this season, although it’s managed to get the job done in all but one game so far.

Accomplishing that is going to be harder and harder to do as the season progresses, more injuries occur — the Orange lost two defensive linemen for the season last week — and outside pressure and expectations mount.

The start to the back half of the season begins with a big test on the road at No. 20 Pittsburgh, which has turned a 3-9 team last year into an undefeated team with a high-powered offense this season. Like Syracuse, the Panthers seem to know how to win tight games.

It’s the final game in October, a month where long losing streaks for the Orange began in each of the past two seasons.

This year, Brown has put emphasis behind the month.

October is for defenders, he tells his team.

“You defend what you say you are,” linebacker Justin Barron said Saturday. “We tell (Brown) and everyone is telling each other that we’re a contender. We know what we wanna do, and we gotta defend that now in October.”

Syracuse has successfully defended that status in its first two games this month.

More importantly, it showed it learned from September mistakes and improved.

Being a college athlete for some means being a leader on the court or field. For others, it means setting a good example for the entire community too.

“Knowing that I can have an impact on their lives, it means a lot to me," said Syracuse running back LeQuint Allen.

Allen, a junior running back, is a huge reason why Syracuse football is 5-1, leading all SU skill players in touches and touchdowns. This year, he’s taking on even more of a role as one of the leaders on the team.

“I feel as though I wanted to be a leader all my life, and now I get a chance to do that," he said. "Just being an impact to kids, my teammates and the whole Syracuse, I just want to do good by them.”

He’s a guy who leads by example. His four-touchdown game against UNLV with an injured leg is the perfect example. On Tuesday, he talked to some high school athletes about how to be a good leader.

“It means a lot to me, you know, just to take time out of my day and come out here and talk to the kids, just to let them know they’re still on right track," Allen said. "Everything they see on TV, they’re right there just keep taking it step by step, and they’re gonna be there."

“I think that he’s actually very insightful for how young he is for a leader," said Liam Allen, a three-sport athlete at Manlius Pebble Hill.

He said talking to Allen motivated him to be even better moving forward.

“I think I’m gonna work twice as hard in practices now and in my workouts by myself. I’m gonna keep the intensity as high as possible and keep moving until I can’t anymore," he said.

It was exactly the kind of impact Allen was hoping to make.

“I hope to leave determination," Allen said. "Just, the will of failure in your mind, don’t ignore it, just continue to take step by step. And even if it takes long, you’ll eventually get there and be who you want to be.”

For the second week in a row, the Orange went on the road and picked up a win. This week they went down to Raleigh and defeated the Wolfpack, 24-17. NC State tried to make a furious late-game comeback, cutting a 24-7 deficit to 24-17, but failed to recover the onsides kick with 1:32 left in the game. Kyle McCord had another big passing game, completing 31-42 passes for 346 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Jackson Meeks caught 11 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. NC State quarterback CJ Bailey threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 28 yards.

Syracuse Orange News: Justin Barron lauded, tennis title, field hockey climbs in poll (itlh; Adler)

This installment of Syracuse Orange sports news begins with senior linebacker Justin Barron, who came up big on the defensive end this past Saturday night as Syracuse football won at N.C. State by seven points.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Barron, in the Orange's 24-17 road victory against N.C. State, led the 'Cuse with eight total tackles. He recovered a fumble, recorded his second career interception, had two tackles for a loss, and one sack.

For those efforts, Barron was named the Senior Bowl player of the week. Additionally, both he and senior wide receiver Jackson Meeks were named ACC players of the week. Meeks, versus N.C. State, produced a career-high 11 catches, 116 yards and a touchdown.

Syracuse football has its second bye week coming up. Then, the Orange (5-1, 2-1 in the ACC) will travel to long-time rival and No. 20 Pittsburgh on Thursday, Oct. 24.

Syracuse football: first down offense vs NC State (TNIAAM; Wall)

The Syracuse Orange head into this second bye with a lot of questions to be answered in the final half of the season.

One area that appears to be working well is the time of possession from the Syracuse offense and that’s been helped by success on first downs leading to manageable third down conversions- the Orange were 8/15 on third downs in Raleigh.

Syracuse made it an early priority to get Oronde Gadsden and Trebor Pena involved and as the game wore on, it opened up Jackson Meeks to get single coverage on the outside. One early play saw Pena behind the defense and unable to pull in the pass from Kyle McCord on what could have been a 65 yard score.

The second half featured a lot more running than we’ve seen from Syracuse this season, which makes sense with NC State’s struggles in that area. Next week’s opponent Pitt has been much tougher, holding opponents under three yards per carry so far.

Nebraska projected to face Syracuse in Pinstripe Bowl (usatoday.com; Croley)

The Nebraska Cornhuskers return to action this weekend against the Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington and are just one win away from reaching bowl eligibility for the first time since 2016.

The latest bowl projections from USA TODAY are mostly the same as last week, with a few exceptions. As the season continues to progress, the bowl projections are likely to stabilize in the coming weeks.

The Cornhuskers are still projected to face the ACC’s Syracuse Orange in the Pinstripe Bowl. This matchup would pit Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule against his former longtime assistant Fran Brown, who is in his first year with the Orange.

The Huskers and Orange have met 12 times, dating back to the first matchup in 1917. Syracuse holds a 7-5 advantage in the series. The two teams have not met on the gridiron since the 1984 season.

In Brown’s first year, the Orange are currently 5-1 after defeating North Carolina State 24-17 this past weekend. Syracuse will be off this weekend and return to action in week nine against the Pittsburgh Panthers.

In this week’s projections, the Big Ten has three representatives in the 12-team playoff: the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Oregon Ducks, and the Penn State Nittany Lion.

Oregon would host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the first round, while Penn State would host the Kansas State Wildcats. After receiving a first-round bye, Ohio State is projected to face Penn State in the Rose Bowl in the quarterfinals. Oregon would play Clemson in the Peach Bowl.

The projections then have an Ohio State vs. Oregon rematch in the CFP Semifinals at the Cotton Bowl before Ohio State and Texas are projected to play in the College Football Playoff title game.

Syracuse Football: Key Takeaways from the Cuse' Week 7 Win over NC State (itlh; Nederveld)

For only the second time in program history and the first since 2013, Syracuse football came into Carter-Finley Stadium and left victorious.

The Orange never trailed and won 24-17 in a game that felt more lopsided than the final score would suggest.

My key takeaways from Syracuse football's week 7 win versus NC State.

Justin Barron was incredible

A year after being named an All-ACC Honorable Mention as a safety, to me, Justin Barron has been a little underwhelming. That changed after Saturday's game. Lining up primarily as a linebacker, Barron played his best game of his career against the Wolfpack. The 6'4" 225-pound senior led the Orange with eight tackles, five being solo. He also recorded a sack, two tackles for loss, two pass breakups, an interception, and recovered a fumble. Talk about filling up the stat sheet.

With an Orange defense that has been increasingly banged up, Barron was needed even more than usual. And he stepped up.

Week Eight ACC Power Rankings- Leaders separate from the pack (rubbingtherock.com; Farmer)

It's been a couple of weeks since our last ACC Power Rankings, but in that break, the top three teams in the conference are beginning to separate from the pack.

SMU is No. 3 in the rankings, with one loss to BYU that turned out not to be a bad loss. The Cougars are one of 11 teams that are still undefeated and have a chance to make the College Football Playoffs.

The Mustangs have an explosive offense, scoring less than 34 points only twice. That includes dropping 42 points of Florida State, which, surprisingly, has a good defense. Other than California, there's no one left on SMU's schedule that can stop it.

ACC Football Power Rankings - Week 7 (backingthepack.com; PWolf)

1. Clemson (last week: 49-14 W @ Wake Forest)

The Fightin’ Dabos continue to look incredibly impressive since the season opening loss to Georgia. Cade Klubnik has been sensational since then, too, with a 17:1 TD:INT ratio over the last five games. The Tigers offense tallied 566 yards in the win over Wake while playing turnover free ball. Now at 4-0 in ACC play, Clemson will host Virginia before getting their bye week in.

2. SMU (last week: Bye)

No reason to lose ground during the bye week. The Mustangs head to a reeling Stanford this week, then play at Duke. Piling on those frequent flier miles.

3. Miami (last week: Bye)

No reason to move up during the bye week. The Hurricanes head to Louisville this week for a massive Big East ACC showdown.

4. Pittsburgh (last week: 17-15 W vs California)

The other ACC school aside from Miami that is both bowl eligible and still without a mark in the Loss column this year. Pitt moved to 3-0 in one-possession games, as well as 2-0 in conference play, by staving off a late rally from Cal. The offense didn’t click like it had so far this year, which aligns with Eli Holstein having by far his worse college game (50% completions, 2 INT). There’s a lot to be said for surviving a game like that. The Panthers hit the bye week now before hosting Syracuse.

5. Louisville (last week: 24-20 W @ Virginia)

The Cards were up 17-7 early in the 3rd quarter and then the offense just disappeared while Virginia mounted a rally to take the lead just 15 minutes later. Louisville managed to put together one last TD drive with under 2:00 to play to take the lead back before forcing four straight incompletions at the tail end of Virginia’s final drive to seal the win. It wasn’t pretty or easy, but the Cardinals kept alive their ACC title hopes with the win. This week is when those hopes will really be tested with a noon home tilt against Miami.

6. California (last week: 15-17 L @ Pittsburgh)

Gotta kinda feel bad for the Golden Bears. They’re sitting at 3-3 overall and 0-3 in ACC play with those three losses coming by a combined 8 points. They are this close to being an undefeated Top 15 team. Well, sympathy will be in short supply this week as Cal hosts NC State on Saturday afternoon. The Bears defense is legit, having held Pitt to 1-of-12 on 3rd downs and just 277 total yards in the game.

7. Syracuse (last week: 24-17 W @ NC State)

Credit to Fran Brown’s team for going into Carter-Finley and getting the win. The Orange took care of the ball, and that was the difference in the game as all over facets were pretty even. Cuse dominated 3rd downs on offense and the defense came up with a trio of takeaways. Sitting at 2-1 in conference, Orange fans can dream of an ACC title run if they can get past Pitt on the road after their bye week. It’s not easy sledding, but Brown & Co. have done a tremendous job in Year 1 at Syracuse.

8. Georgia Tech (last week: 41-34 W @ North Carolina)

Haynes King certainly didn’t have his A-game passing the ball, but GT’s offense ran roughshod over, through, and around the Tar Heels defense, gashing the home team for 371 yards and 5 TDs on the ground. Jamal Haynes accounted for 170 yards and 2 TDs of those totals, including a 68-yard TD run with 16 seconds to play on a rather vanilla “we’re playing for overtime” play. Ah, that was amazing. The Yellow Jackets are 3-2 in conference now and just a single win away from bowl eligibility. They’ll look to reach that this weekend while hosting a Notre Dame team that has been pretty great since a Week 2 loss to Northern Illinois.

9. Virginia Tech (last week: Bye)

NEWS: 2025 UGA at GT moved to Mercedes Benz

From AJC: Why Georgia Tech moved its 2025 game against UGA from home to Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Georgia Tech announced [today] that its annual, end-of-the-season football game with Georgia has been scheduled for Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Nov. 29, 2025. The contest is part of a six-year contract Tech signed in 2021 with AMB Sports and Entertainment and Mercedes-Benz Stadium that requires the Yellow Jackets to play at least one game per season at the downtown Atlanta venue...
Tech’s ability to bring in a [guaranteed] $10 million payday was the biggest driving force behind the unorthodox move to change the venue for one of college football’s iconic rivalries. The game has been played at Bobby Dodd Stadium for more than 100 years and at Sanford Stadium for almost 100 years...

Like so many traditions in college football, this one was altered for the money.
That said, Atlanta will be the site of not one, not two, but three marquee ACC-vs-SEC match-ups next season:

It's critical the ACC win at least one of those games (though they may be underdogs in all three). South Carolina is the weakest link for the SEC, although I won't absolutely rule out a Syracuse victory over Tennessee (they are used to playing inside a dome, after all). Should be interesting...

As the College Football season goes on there has been two main teams in the ACC who have merged. 2024 Week 8 Around the ACC (RX; HM)

2024 Week 8 Around the ACC

Around the ACC
Boston College: Through six games, five of which he has played in, quarterback Thomas Castellanos has four multi-touchdown games, including a career-high four versus Duquesne (September 7). Castellanos was responsible for three touchdowns at Florida State (September 2) and rushed for 73 yards to pass Tyler Murphy for the most career rushing yards by a BC quarterback with 1,186 yards (at the time). Castellanos has thrown 12 touchdown passes and rushed for one this season, after throwing for 15 touchdowns and rushing for 13 scores on the ground last year.
California: The Golden Bears’ defense continues to find ways to record takeaways from their opponents, as the defense ranks seventh nationally with 14 takeaways. Cal has recorded at least one takeaway in 41 of its last 44 games and eight in a row. With two interceptions last week at Pitt, Cal’s defense leads the nation with 13 INTs on the season, one of three teams with 13 picks, and extended its string of games with at least one interception to eight in a row, spanning all six games of 2024 and the final two contests of 2023. Defensive back Nohl Williams leads the country with six interceptions this season and has 13 for his career.
Clemson: The Tigers’ Cade Klubnik has shined this season, particularly in ACC play over the last four weeks. Klubnik ranks first in conference play in total touchdowns with 14, first in passing touchdowns with 12, second in total offensive yards with 1,218, third in passing yards at 1,008, third in passing efficiency at 157.58 and fifth in total offensive yards per game at 304.5, all while leading his team to a 4-0 start in ACC action.
Duke: Coming off an open week last week, the Blue Devils have a home contest on Friday night against Florida State, which leads the series 22-0 overall. With their 3-0 home start to 2024, the Blue Devils are 11-1 in their last 12 home games dating back to the 2022 season. Duke’s only loss during the stretch was a 21-14 setback to No. 11 Notre Dame last year on September 30, 2023. Thus far this season, Duke joins Boston College (3-0), Clemson (3-0), Georgia Tech (3-0), Miami (3-0) and Pitt (4-0) as ACC teams undefeated at home.
Florida State: The Seminoles are tied for first in the nation with four blocked kicks this season, all field goals. Florida State is one of two teams in the country to block at least one kick in three games against FBS opponents, and its three-game streak with at least one blocked kick is the longest nationally this year. FSU’s 13 blocked kicks under Mike Norvell are tied for eighth nationally and tied for third among all Power 4 programs since the start of the 2020 season.
Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets rushing attack was on full display last week versus North Carolina (October 12). Georgia Tech’s 371 rushing yards were a seasonhigh and were its most since it ran for 377 versus Duke on November 28, 2020. The Jackets had two 100-yard rushers (RB Jamal Haynes – 170 and QB Haynes King – 107) for the first time since quarterback Jeff Sims and current San Francisco 49ers running back Jordan Mason had 108 and 105, respectively, versus Duke in 2020.
Louisville: ACC Rookie of the Week Isaac Brown led all rushers with 20 carries for 146 yards and two touchdowns last week in the Cardinals’ road win at Virginia. Brown has 508 yards rushing this season, the third-highest total by a true freshman in program history. He is the second true freshman in Louisville history to have three 100-yard rushing games, joining Lamar Jackson who had five 100-yard rushing games as a quarterback in 2015.
Miami: Behind an offensive line that was named to the Joe Moore Midseason Honor Roll, Miami’s offense ranks first in all of FBS in scoring offense (47.7 ppg), total offense (583.8 ypg), passing offense (400.0 ypg) and third-down conversion percentage (60.3 %). The Canes’ offense is led by Heisman candidate Cam Ward who ranks first in all of FBS in passing touchdowns (20), passing yards per game (369.8), points responsible for (142) and total offense (396.7 ypg).
North Carolina: The Tar Heels’ Omarion Hampton had another 100-yard rushing game last time out versus Georgia Tech (October 12), giving him his sixth 100-yard rushing game of the season. UNC has had a player rush for at least 100 yards in each of the first seven games of the season for the first time since 1983, the only other time that has happened in UNC football history. The Tar Heels are the only FBS program with a 100-yard rusher in each of its first seven games this year.
NC State: With the offense clearly in his hands, true freshman quarterback CJ Bailey became the first true freshman since Phillip Rivers to throw for 300 or more yards in a game when he threw for 329 yards last week against Syracuse. Last week, Bailey had three completions of 40-plus yards, including two of 70 or more yards. The freshman hit KC Concepcion for 42 yards, connected with Noah Rogers for a 75-yard touchdown and had a 72-yard completion to Hollywood Smothers.
Pitt: The 6-0 Panthers have been led this season by their offense and transfer quarterback Eli Holstein. However, the Pitt defense flexed its muscles in the 17-15 win over Cal last time out (October 12), as the Panthers had a season-high six sacks versus the Golden Bears. Pitt’s defense produced six sacks for the first time since November 16, 2023, against Boston College. Under head coach Pat Narduzzi, Pitt has recorded at least five sacks in a game 30 times and is 28-2 in those contests.
SMU: The Mustangs will look to continue its strong first season in the ACC with their first-ever conference game versus fellow new ACC member Stanford on Saturday night. Third-year head coach Rhett Lashlee has his team at 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in league play. With its two ACC wins thus far this season, SMU has won 11 straight conference games dating back to 2022 which is tied for the program record. The Mustangs are 23-10 under Coach Lashlee, 14-2 in their last 16 games and have won seven straight road games heading into the conference road contest this weekend.
Stanford: The Cardinal will host SMU in what is the first-ever ACC matchup this Saturday in Stanford, California. The youth movement, which saw 20 players make their collegiate debuts last season in 2023, continues under second-year head coach Troy Taylor in 2024, as eight players have recorded their first career touchdown this season. So far in 2024, 1,012 snaps have been taken by Stanford freshmen, with 15 true freshmen having made their collegiate debuts this season.
Syracuse: In the win last time out at NC State (October 12), transfer quarterback Kyle McCord threw for 300-plus yards in his sixth-straight game, a program record, and added two touchdown passes to increase his season total to 19. The 19 touchdown tosses is tied for sixth on the Syracuse single-season record list and is tied for 12th on the career leader ledger in program history.

Northeast Football Revival 2024

Don't look now, but there's some really good football being played North of the Mason-Dixon line and East of Lake Ontario. (For the purposes of this post, I will exclude Maryland, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Cincinnati as all being too Southern or Midwestern).

From There seems to be a resurgence of Northeast Football posted by CuseRoc on CSNBBS:

Penn St 6-0 and Pitt 6-0 both undefeated and Syracuse at 5-1 (should be undefeated. Still cant believe the loss to Stanford). BC is at 4-2. This may be the first time ever that Pitt and SU have both been good at the same time as conference mates. That sets up a big game on Thursday October 24th at Pitt. Also, even Uconn is finally having a good season thus far at 4-2.

You know what, he's absolutely correct. Pitt, Penn State, Syracuse and Boston College are currently a combined 21-3 (0.875). Pitt and Penn State are both ranked, and Syracuse is receiving votes (BC was ranked earlier in the season).

ACC

  • Pittsburgh 6-0
  • Syracuse 5-1
  • Boston College 4-2
Total: 15-3 (Outstanding!)

Just when you thought you had college football all figured out, it hits you like a 300-pound defensive lineman charging in unblocked from your blindside.

Two weeks ago, we saw 5 of the nation’s top 11 teams go down to defeat within hours of each other, including No. 1 Alabama. This week, No. 2 Ohio State bit the dust.

They’re the kind of results that remind us why they wait until the end of the season to start handing out trophies instead of awarding them in mid-October. With half the schedule still to be played, there’s no telling what might happen and how much more things might change.

But what fun is waiting?

Since we don’t have any actual hardware to present, there’s no harm in jumping the gun by honoring the best of the best in the ACC for their achievements during the 1st half of the season.

Offensive Player of the Year
As the highest-rated player in the transfer portal, Cam Ward was already a Heisman Trophy frontrunner before he ever threw his 1st pass for Miami this season. Halfway through his 1 season with the Hurricanes, he’s only added to the hype. The Washington State transfer doesn’t just lead the nation in both passing yards per game (369.8) and touchdown passes (20). His late-game comeback heroics have almost singlehandedly kept Miami undefeated, ranked in the top 10 and in the hunt for its first ACC championship and Playoff Berth.

Defensive Player of the Year

After a breakout sophomore season in which he recorded 7.5 sacks in 2022, Boston College’s Donovan Ezeiruaku all but disappeared last season. He failed to record a sack in 11 of the 12 games he played and only had 2 for the entire year. But he’s bounced back with a vengeance in 2024. Energized by the arrival of new coach Bill O’Brien, The senior edge rusher equaled his sack total from last year in the Eagles’ season-opening win at Florida State. He’s already surpassed his career high with 9, all solo, to rank 2nd nationally. He also has an ACC-leading 11.5 tackles for loss while amassing 43 tackles and a forced fumble.

Offensive Rookie of the Year

Isaac Brown had some big shoes to fill at Louisville after the Cardinals top 2 rushers from last season were taken in the NFL Draft. But the former 3-star prospect has picked up right where Jawhar Jordan and Isaac Guerendo left off. He ran for 123 yards and a touchdown in his college debut against Austin Peay and is averaging 8.6 yards per carry for the season, He’s coming off his best game to date, a 146-yard, 2-touchdown performance in a come-from-behind win at Virginia. Brown is also an effective receiver out of the backfield with 14 catches, 4 of which came 2 weeks ago against SMU.

Defensive Rookie of the Year

Sammy Brown came to Clemson with even higher expectations than Brown. He was a 5-star prospect and the No. 2-rated linebacker in this year’s recruiting class. And while Dabo Swinney has been careful about working him into the lineup on a full-time basis, Brown still ranks 4th on the Tigers in tackles with 20 while recording a pair of pass breakups. He showed his dominating potential in a win against Stanford 2 weeks ago by collecting 2 sacks, 3.5 TFLs and a team-leading 8 tackles. He was recently named one of the nation’s 15 impact freshmen by ESPN, along with the likes of Alabama’s Ryan Williams and Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith.

Breakout player

Desmond Reid wasn’t the best-known transfer to enter the ACC this season. He wasn’t even Pitt’s most heralded arrival from Western Carolina. That honor went to dynamic young offensive coordinator Kade Bell. It didn’t take long, though, for the undersized 5-8, 175-pound running back to start making a name for himself. Along with freshman quarterback Eli Holstein, Bell has helped inject energy into a Panthers offense that has gone from one of the worst in the conference a year ago to one of its best this season. He’s already amassed 494 yards on the ground and 341 as a receiver while accounting for 7 touchdowns with an explosiveness best illustrated by his electric 72-yard sprint on a 4th-and-1 play in Saturday’s win against Cal.

After a bye week, the Virginia Tech football team returns to the field Thursday night to host Boston College in a mid-season ACC showdown. The Eagles come in at 4-2 while the Hokies are somewhat disappointing at 3-3. What is better than a Thursday night game in the fall in Blacksburg at Lane Stadium?

Virginia Tech begins the second half of the season and will get four of their final six games at home beginning with the Eagles. As the campus prepares for ESPN SportsCenter as well as the ESPN broadcast, here are three bold predictions.

Virginia Tech struggles running the ball

The Hokies were able to run the ball successfully against Stanford on Oct. 5 in a 31-7 victory. The Cardinal entered the game as the top defensive unit against the rush and Tech rushed for over 100 yards. BC has a stout running game as well and it will be tougher sledding for Virginia Tech this week.

Boston College has allowed just two rushing touchdowns through their first six games aaginst some good competition. Trying to establish Bhayshul Tuten early and often will be key for offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen. If the running game gets going, that opens up a lot of things for the Hokies.

Kyron Drones throws for over 200 yards

If BC is able to control the running game, it will be imperative that quarterback Kyron Drones has success throwing the ball. He has shown signs through the first six weeks of being the QB we thought we would see all season long, but then he makes some questionable decisions and bad throws. He certainly has the playmakers to make plays down the field, it’s just a matter of getting the ball to them against a secondary that is more improved under first-year coach Bill O’Brien this season.

Boston College easily covers the spread

Virginia Tech opened up as a 7-point favorite over the Eagles. Again, because we keep getting the inconsistent Hokies, it’s hard to see them covering. BC played well in a hostile environment at Missouri and nearly knocked off the then-Top 10 Tigers in a tough environment. Playing at Lane Stadium won’t intimidate them and until Virginia Tech can prove weekly that they can be the team we saw at Stanford, seven points seems like a lot.

The #22 Panthers had to hold on late to escape with a 17-15 win over the Golden Bears. Pitt was held scoreless in the second half, and Cal had a chance to take the lead late but missed a 40-yard field goal with 1:50 left in the game. Running back Desmond Reid was the Panthers' best offensive player, running for 120 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, and he had a catch for 19 yards. Jimmy Scott had three sacks and Braylan Lovelace had two sacks for the Pitt defense. For Cal, quarterback Fernando Mendoza was 27-37 for 272 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Jack Endries caught eight passes for 119 yards and a touchdown.

Florida State football (1-5, 1-4 ACC) continues to shuffle the offensive line, identifying the best front five.

As FSU prepares for a Friday night lights ACC matchup against the Duke Blue Devils (5-1, 1-1), the offensive line will have its sixth lineup change, with Andre' Otto and Jaylen Early as the starting guards, according to this week's depth chart, which was released on Monday.

After Tuesday's practice, Alex Atkins, FSU's offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, spoke about having the young guards in the lineup in preparation against the Blue Devils.

"It's an opportunity," Atkins said.

"What I've seen is their hunger. They're working at it, focused. I think it's their level of preparation. When you come in early in the weekend, you're going to be the guy, so it kind of levels up their preparation and seeing them in the building more, which is good."

Otto will be making his second career start at left guard for the Seminoles.

Atkins evaluated the redshirt freshman's debut against Clemson and his progression. He also compared to Early's first start earlier the year against Memphis, which was a last-minute change after Darius Washington was a late scratch.

"He had some high, high moments and some low, low moments," Atkins said about Otto.

"It's the same thing for Jaylen Early. His first start in his career was against Memphis, and it was unexpected. Then, against Cal, he knew he would be the starter, so you saw that progression, and he did a little bit better."

Duke is also coming off a bye week. Before that, it suffered its first loss to Georgia Tech, 24-14, in Week 6. Manny Diaz's defense is ranked 27th in total defense, second in tackles for loss (58) and 15th in sacks (18).

"I think Duke does a good job of playing without hesitation," Atkins said.

A proposed land use plan for Clay recommends the town encourage the creation of "town center" developments like the one depicted in this rendering.LaBella Associates

https://www.syracuse.com/news/2024/...ys-largest-town-plans-for-the-micron-era.html (PS; $: Moriarty)

Onondaga County’s most populous town has no downtown or central square where people gather to work, shop, dine and hold events like July 4th parades. The closest Clay ever got was Great Northern Mall, but that’s a ghost mall, for now.

All that could change if the town adopts a new land use plan that would guide development in the coming Micron era.

The ambitious proposal, outlined in a yearlong study, calls for the creation of town center developments in the north-central section of Clay.

Such developments would resemble thriving villages, with a mix of residential, commercial, office, entertainment, cultural and educational uses. It also calls for several other smaller districts with different mixes of housing and commerce.

And the study recommends Clay start filling hundreds of acres of undeveloped land north of Route 31 with a denser mix of housing, including detached and connected single-family homes, and apartments.

The study can be viewed on the town’s website and at the bottom of this story.

The push for a town center and more housing in Clay is not new.

But Clay’s consideration of a new set of development and planning blueprints signals a willingness to put those ideas into motion.

If Clay accepts the new guidelines, local leaders would have to rewrite zoning laws to create the town center district and allow a greater density of housing in many areas now restricted to agricultural use and homes with large lots.

With nearly 61,000 residents, Clay has the biggest population of any town in the county. And county and town planners are expecting that population to grow by 20,000, a 33% increase, over the next decade.

In addition to more housing, Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon has been pushing the concept of town centers for more than a year as he tries to convince local leaders to reimagine life in Syracuse’s suburbs once Micron arrives.

For more than 20 years, Clay officials have been working to create a town center in the Three Rivers area in the northwest section of the town.

The concept also fits with developer Guy Hart’s proposal to remake Great Northern Mall into hundreds of apartments, several hotels, restaurants, stores and even a medical facility.

Rendering shows Micron Technology Inc.'s planned semiconductor fabrication facility in Clay. Micron says the $100 billion plant will create 9,000 jobs over 20 years and four times that many support positions at related suppliers and service companies. (Micron Technology)

https://www.syracuse.com/business/2...mental-review-wont-affect-micron-in-clay.html (PS; $; Coin)

A new law allows planned chipmaking plants in the U.S. to bypass federal environmental regulations, but it will have little to no effect on Micron Technology’s project in Central New York.

The law, signed by President Joe Biden, exempts new semiconductor plants from having to undergo a rigorous environmental review by the federal government.

Micron’s planned chipmaking complex in the town of Clay, however, will still be subject to what’s known as the National Environmental Protection Act. That’s because Micron must obtain a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to fill in more than 200 acres of wetlands, and that permit triggers a review under NEPA.

In addition, the Clay project is subject to the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act, which is as stringent as the federal review.

Micron confirmed the new federal law won’t change its environmental review process for the Clay project.

“Because the state of New York has its own state-level environmental review that is required as a result of the state and local incentives our project qualifies for, in addition to the nature of our New York project site independently requiring federal environmental review, the NEPA exemption bill …does not apply to this project,” Micron said in a statement.

Micron announced two years ago it planned to spend up to $100 billion on as many as four large fabrication plants, or fabs, at Route 31 and Caughdenoy Road. Construction is slated to start in November 2025.

Syracuse football won its second straight road game Saturday at N.C. State. It’s the first time the Orange won road games in back-to-back weeks since 2012.
I would not have expected our futility in this regard to be that bad/sad. Wow...just, wow.
Well, let's make it three in a row next week!!

on the flip side how many chances have we had with back 2 back rd games?

roughly 10 yrs so maybe 20 chances?

2013-2015 6 times and two of those vs top 10 teams
2016-2020 6 times and four of those vs top 25 teams
2020-2023 4 times and three of those vs top 20 teams

so yeah its hard to do and even hard when you face top teams on the road

16 times and 9 of those vs top teams which we would seldom beat anyway

I took that stat to mean back to back road games regardless of any home game(s) in between, but maybe you're right.
