Welcome to National Cat Day!

National Cat Day is a time when people give their cats a little extra attention, and homeless cats are helped to find forever homes. Colleen Paige, founder of holidays such as National Dog Day, National Puppy Day, and National Pet Day, created the day to raise awareness about the number of homeless cats, and for those who live with cats to celebrate them.

Cats are the most popular pet in the United States, with over a third of households having them, and 90 million house cats living in the country. Domesticated cats are thought to have descended from the Middle Eastern wildcat, which is believed to have begun being domesticated about 12,000 years ago in the Middle East, near the Fertile Crescent. At that time, humans made the shift to agriculture from a nomadic hunter and gatherer lifestyle and started storing crops. The crops brought rodents like mice, and this naturally attracted cats from the wild. The cats were now in a close proximity to humans, and the more docile ones began being brought into homes.

Film Review: Breaking down Kyle McCord’s 3 pick-6 game in Pittsburgh (DO; Andrews)

Last Thursday in Pittsburgh was supposed to be the night where Kyle McCord used his flamethrowing right arm to thrust Syracuse into the AP Top 25 Poll.

Instead, it was a nightmare.

SU was drubbed 41-13 by then-No. 19 Pitt following McCord’s worst performance with the Orange. He threw a career-high five interceptions — tied with Todd Norley and Greg Paulus for the most ever in a single game by a Syracuse quarterback.

It wasn’t just McCord’s interception tally that killed the Orange, it was the severity of his turnovers. Three of his interceptions were pick-sixes. It was the first time a team returned three or more interceptions for touchdowns since Sept. 3, 2022, when USC housed a trio against Rice.

Considering SU’s strong defensive showing, it could’ve stayed close against Pitt. But McCord’s poor play gave the Panthers a 21-point cushion, eliminating that possibility.

Here’s a breakdown of what led to McCord’s three pick-sixes in Syracuse’s (5-2, 2-2 ACC) lopsided defeat to then-No. 19 Pittsburgh (7-0, 3-0 ACC):

1st quarter, 12:55 — Caught in a deep stare

McCord made a different mistake on each of his three pick-sixes. While three of his five total interceptions were caused by tipped balls, it’s hard not to cast the blame on McCord for most of them. On this play, he got caught staring down Trebor Peña near the sideline.

Peña, whose status was in doubt heading into the game, is McCord’s go-to guy. He leads SU with 47 receptions. McCord certainly wanted to take advantage of the Panthers potentially strategizing against an offense without Peña. But the quarterback let his eyes do too much of the talking.

On its first drive, Syracuse faced a second-and-10 from the 33-yard line. Running back LeQuint Allen Jr. motioned pre-snap to the right flat, while SU had four receivers split wide. Pitt lined up in a cover 2 defense, with linebacker Rasheem Biles dropping down to cover Peña in the left slot.

Allen Jr. turned toward McCord, hoping for the ball with plenty of space, two blockers and minimal defenders ahead of him. Yet, McCord’s eyes never moved from Peña’s direction. Peña ran an out-route to the Pitt sideline. McCord planned to hit him the entire time, which Biles read exquisitely. McCord fired a pass and Biles immediately jumped Peña’s route to hawk the ball. Biles dashed to the end zone with ease for a 35-yard pick-six.

McCord often stared receivers down Thursday. His 35-for-64 passing line told the story. He consistently made predictable throws, which Pittsburgh feasted on for points.

1st quarter, 6:36 — A brutal 3rd-and-long mistake

There was no need for McCord to force a throw here. He’d already been struggling, though seemed to regain a rhythm earlier on this drive when he connected with tight end Oronde Gadsden II up the left seam for a 24-yard completion. Yet, he felt urged to toss to his lone read on this third-and-12 play from SU’s 49-yard line.

Here, Syracuse split three receivers to the right in a bunch formation — Peña, Jackson Meeks, Gadsden — and just Umari Hatcher to the left. Gadsden went in motion briefly before stopping at the right hash marks in the slot position. Once McCord took the snap and dropped back, Hatcher was blanketed by Pitt cornerback Rashad Battle. His other three options all ran vertical routes.

McCord finished his drop back and felt pressure from the left by defensive lineman Jimmy Scott. Gadsden stopped, pivoted and broke toward SU’s sideline. McCord saw him, but linebacker Kyle Louis was close by. There was an opening in the pocket for McCord to slide into, and either see the field more or throw the ball away. He didn’t do it, though.

The quarterback rushed a pass toward Gadsden. Louis easily stepped in front of the ball and intercepted it. He scampered 59 yards to the end zone while breaking a tackle from Gadsden, juking Allen Jr. and McCord and muscling through center J’Onre Reed at the end. Instead of moving in the pocket, McCord threw another touchdown to the Panthers.

2nd quarter, 1:23 — Screen pass disaster

McCord’s interception total was honestly impressive. Especially because he did so all in one half. Here on his final pick-six, which put the Panthers up 31-0 before halftime, a simple screen pass was botched about as severely as it could have been.

Fran Brown discusses linebackers, loss to Pitt at weekly press conference (DO; Girshon)

Syracuse entered its bye week winners of three straight games and was on the cusp of entering the AP Top 25 Poll for the first time under Fran Brown. A primetime matchup on the road versus then-No. 19 Pittsburgh loomed, setting the stage for the Orange’s biggest game of the season.

But instead of carrying its pre-bye-week momentum into Acrisure Stadium, SU came out flat. Kyle McCord’s three first-quarter interceptions set the tone for a 41-13 dismantling, the Orange’s worst defeat thus far in 2024.

Now, Syracuse is preparing for its first matchup in November — a month the program consistently struggled in under former head coach Dino Babers — versus Virginia Tech. The Orange need just one win versus the Hokies, Boston College, California, UConn or Miami to clinch bowl eligibility for the third straight season.

“I wasn’t here last November. So, I’m just focused on this November. And I wish that, if you say we struggled last November, I don’t want to struggle this November,” Brown said.

Here are some takeaways from Brown’s weekly press conference before Syracuse’s (5-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) matchup versus Virginia Tech (5-3, 3-1 ACC) Saturday:

Murphy’s Law

Brown repeatedly acknowledged the strange elements that SU’s offense faced against Pitt. From Brandon George corralling an interception while lying on his stomach to McCord having one of his passes picked off because the ball bounced off his receiver’s helmet, SU’s offense experienced plenty of flukiness.

When reflecting on the loss, Brown brought up Murphy’s Law: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.”

And for the Orange, in a season that mostly had been going right, the script flipped versus the Panthers. Looking ahead to VT, Brown said he’s looking forward to having his team play football and he doesn’t want the same chaos to ensue. To get over the blowout loss, Brown mentioned the team hung out Saturday night watching other college football games before flushing everything out of their system Sunday.

Syracuse football star tight end will play against Virginia Tech, Fran Brown says (PS; $; Leiker)

Syracuse football will have a key piece of personnel available Saturday as it looks to rebound from a big loss at Pittsburgh on Thursday night.

SU coach Fran Brown said during his Monday press conference that tight end Oronde Gadsden II will play against Virginia Tech after missing the second half of last game following a big hit in the second quarter.

“Yeah he’s good, he’s playing,” Brown said Monday. “He‘s playing. He’s good to go.”

Asked directly after the game if Gadsden had been in concussion protocol, Brown said he wasn’t sure but “that might be the case.”

Gadsden sat up on the field following a big hit by Pittsburgh linebacker Jordan Bass, shook his head and then laid back down again before trainers came to attend to him, the broadcast showed.

He was taken to the sideline medical tent and spent the second half on the sideline in street clothes.

Backup running back Yasin Willis was also injured against Pitt and is less probable to see the field Saturday. Brown said postgame the true freshman had an ankle sprain and clarified Monday that it’s a high ankle sprain.

“It was sprained pretty bad, so I‘m not sure if Willis will be able to go, but we have other guys at running back,” Brown said. “I think Willis is a little hurt. We‘ll see how it goes, though, ’cause he‘s a tough kid. Tough just background, period.

“If he‘s anything like his pops, he’ll be playing Saturday, but it can be tough though sometimes, high ankle sprains. Sometimes things of that nature linger a little bit longer.”

Willis‘ fellow true freshman Jaden Hart would likely get the next call-up behind started LeQuint Allen if Willis cannot go Saturday. He’s appeared in the backfield 14 snaps this season.

Syracuse returned preseason All-ACC linebacker Marlowe Wax to its lineup Thursday night after five missed games with a lower-leg injury.

Brown said postgame that Wax was still not at 100%. He said Monday that although Wax had been sore from his 40 snaps against Pitt, he should be “better than he was last week.”

True freshman wide receiver Emanuel Ross was also available for the Orange for the first time in a few games on Thursday.

He ended up as the team’s leading receiver with five catches for 78 yards.

Brown said Monday, though, that Ross is still dealing with a couple injuries.

How much did Syracuse’s loss to Pittsburgh damage the Orange’s potential bowl destinations? (PS; $; Carlson)

Syracuse is no longer projected to a warm-weather destination by the majority of the national bowl projections following the Orange’s blowout loss to Pittsburgh over the weekend.

Instead, the most popular pick this week is a familiar destination for the Orange -- the Pinstripe Bowl. The Orange has played in the Pinstripe Bowl in three of its past six bowl games, including in 2022.

Bowls usually do try to give schools some variety, which is why I do not have the Pinstripe Bowl as my pick below.

I still have the Orange headed to a warm-weather bowl but it will require a strong finish by Syracuse and some respect for the ACC from the College Football Playoff selection committee.

ESPN’s Football Power Index projects the Orange with an average finish with of 6.6-5.4, making the most likely outcome a 7-5 season.

Here’s one look at how the ACC’s postseason picture could shake out if the season ended today.

Bowl projections

College Football Playoffs: Miami, Clemson, Notre Dame

If the CFP committee view of the college football landscape matches AP Top 25, the ACC would be in position to place three schools in the College Football Playoffs this week. Miami (No. 5) and Notre Dame (No. 8) would be safely in.

Either Clemson or Iowa State who are tied for No. 11, would get the final spot. I used Clemson because even if Iowa State or BYU finishes the regular-season unbeaten, one of them will have to lose in the Big XII title game.

Clemson and Notre Dame probably can’t afford another loss. Miami might not be able to either.

Holiday Bowl vs. Pac-12: Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh’s fanbase doesn’t travel particularly well so among the three best candidates that aren’t CFP teams, I’m sending the Panthers to the West where a former Pac-12 team will be asked to fill the stadium.

Pop-Tarts Bowl vs. Big XIl: Virginia Tech

This bowl game that has always hosted one of the ACC’s best teams. The Hokies are playing well enough to count and their fanbase can be relied on to fill a stadium. Virginia Tech hasn’t played here since 2017.

Gator Bowl vs. Big Ten: Southern Methodist

The Mustangs and Hokies are pretty interchangeable at the moment. I’d expect SMU fans would travel well for their team’s first year in the ACC.

Duke’s Mayo Bowl: Duke

This game has had a North Carolina or Virginia representative for the past nine years. Duke hasn’t made an appearance in that stretch.

Pinstripe Bowl vs. Big Ten: Louisville

Syracuse is always a good candidate for this game. The Orange might be more desirable than expected given it has a new coach that has promoted Northeast recruiting and local ties. I think it’s too soon for the Orange to return after a visit in 2022.

Sun Bowl vs. Pac-12: Syracuse

The Orange will have to finish strong in order to earn the ACC’s final spot against a Power-Four opponent. North Carolina has a soft schedule and is likely to mount a late charge. Syracuse is likely contending with the Tar Heels, Duke and Louisville.

Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets: Good, Bad, and Ugly (gobblercountry.com; Schneider)

Someone, Quick, Check the Calendar!

For a minute right after the mid-point of the 4th quarter and Virginia Tech punted again, but was sitting on a 21-6 lead, I thought that someone had tossed me into the “Wayback Machine”, and the Techs were playing in some 1960s parallel dimension... I was looking for twill jerseys, two bar and butt crack face masks, hip, thigh, and knee pads... and that odd over-padded waddle that most players had back then. All we needed was the Jackets to break out the triple option and the Fighting Gobblers to uncork a wishbone.

The Hokies did pull off the win by more than the wise guys expected, but no one had to be particularly impressed with any “flashy” performances. Trust us, there were some good things in this, but the subtitle of “...Good, Bad, and Ugly” might be better known as “...Okay, Huh?, and Darned Frustrating! So, maybe we’ll go with those, today.

The “Okay” Stuff, was Just Enough, and Quietly Impressive

A win is a win, and Virginia Tech really needed this one. Georgia Tech has had a good start to the season, but were short their starting quarterback, and their defense was not balanced. If they stopped the run, they couldn’t really stop the pass, and if they stopped the pass, they were giving up significant run yards. Virginia Tech managed two 70+ yard drives, (72 and 75) and a 42 yard score off of an interception that ended up in Georgia Tech territory.

With the sputtering offense, the Hokies needed the defense to rear up and do a Beamer Era shutdown of the Yellow Jacket offense. It wasn’t beautiful or graceful, the Hokie defense bent a whole lot, but each time Georgia Tech got anywhere close the Hokies shut the door on nothing more than two field goals, one was a 50 yarder that needed a miracle to get through in the swirling wind in the South end zone. We’ll give that a qualified good.

Wilfred Pene was having himself a big day, the defensive line managed to contain Georgia Tech’s backup Zach Pyron, and it also completely shut down the Jacket running game. Tech only managed 99 total yards but held Georgia Tech to 96 total. We didn’t hear much from Antwan Powell-Ryland, though he didn’t seem to be assigned the role of QB sacking machine. The game’s only sack for Virginia Tech went to Pene. Georgia Tech just couldn’t manage to get anything going on the ground or in the air.

Peter Moore... Well, Moore was way better than just Okay. What was only ‘okay’ about the situation was that Moore punted 10 times in the game. Now, half of those were from Virginia Tech territory and needed to be boomers to keep Georgia Tech from flipping the field. Moore planted them inside their 20 five times, he also put up five punts in excess of 50 yards. If there were any punters out in the crowd, he was putting on a clinic for when to punt long, and when to punt effectively short. Like we said the not-so-great part of this is that Moore had to go out there 10 times. That was 10 failed drives, and no points associated with them.

The Linebacker and STAR positions really stepped it up in this one. Keonta Jenkins, Jaden Keller, Sam Brumfield, and Caleb Woodson where everywhere Jenkins led the squad with 10 tackles, but everyone was close behind him. The performance was two games in a row where there were no breakaway runs, and most ended stuffed out without gaining enough yards to do more than just move the ball between the 30-yard lines.

The Huh? Squad Just Kept Infiltrating the Huddle

First off, it’s really important to say that this publication wasn’t the only one shouting from the rafters that Georgia Tech was going to sell out to stop the run, and in particular stop Bhayshul Tuten. No serious football analyst was fooled a bit when GT ran run-dog after run-dog into the backfield, keying off of both Drones and Tuten, and collapsing everything trying to go straight through the ‘A’ Gap. There were times when sweeps, straight counters, and stretch counters were getting a few yards of traction, but by and large the repeated attempts at running the ball began to numb the prefrontal lobes of any normal brain.

"It was an off night for our football program": Fran Brown focused on what's ahead for SU (cnycentral.com; Fowler)

Syracuse football's 41-13 defeat at No. 19 Pittsburgh last Thursday night was its worst loss against the Panthers since 2010- when it fell 45-14.The Orange have not been able to beat Pitt in Pittsburgh since back in 2001.

QB Kyle McCord threw a career high five interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns. Despite McCord's performance, head coach Fran Brown still took credit for the loss.

"We want to play ball, we don't want the same thing to happen again, I think our quarterback [Kyle McCord] is really good, it was an off night, it was an off night for our football program, an off night for our entire team, starting with the head football coach," said Brown at his weekly press conference on Monday.

Brown was asked how McCord has been handling the loss, he mentioned that the two of them got together over the weekend and talked about it. In Brown's words, 'he's flushed it already, he's moving on.'

In years past, the month of November has not been kind to Syracuse football. Since 2020, the Orange have gone 3-11 in November against primarily ACC opponents.

Syracuse has five regular season games left on its schedule, four against ACC opponents, including a ranked game on senior day vs. No. 5 Miami (FL).

McCord stressed the importance that Syracuse football not get off trackfollowing SU's loss to Pitt.

Syracuse Football: In the race for ACC title, four teams may be separating from pack (itlh; Adler)

As Syracuse football suffered its second loss of the 2024 season on Thursday night at undefeated Pittsburgh, and other week-nine action in the Atlantic Coast Conference transpired on Friday and Saturday, it seems that four league members might be distancing themselves from the pack in the race for a conference crown.

Granted, there is still a lot of football left to be played in the 2024 regular season, so things can ebb and flow within the ACC's pecking order.

With the league expanding to 17 members in football through the additions of California, SMU and Stanford, the ACC eliminated its divisions for the 2024 term. The top two squads in the conference at the end of the regular season will play for an ACC championship on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.

The winner of the ACC will earn a berth to the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff ("CFP"). We'll have to see how everything pans out nationally over the course of the current campaign, but it's certainly possible that a second league school could receive one of the seven at-large bids to the CFP.

Syracuse football and its conference peers are jockeying for position in the ACC standings.

Following week-nine contests, a quartet of groups remains undefeated in ACC competition: They are No. 5 Miami, No. 8 Clemson, No. 17 Pittsburgh and No. 20 SMU. Both the Hurricanes and the Panthers have yet to lose at all in the 2024 season, while the Tigers and the Mustangs each have one non-conference setback.

All four of those ACC schools are on a roll, with each of them having won at least five encounters in a row. Further down the league standings, two teams have two losses at this juncture in the current term, and they are the Orange and Duke, although both of them have two setbacks in conference play.

Another ACC squad to monitor is Virginia Tech, which travels to the JMA Wireless Dome to face Syracuse football this Saturday, Nov. 2. The Hokies have captured three straight victories and are 3-1 in league affairs, while Virginia Tech sports a 5-3 overall mark.

Beyond Miami, Clemson, Pittsburgh, SMU and Virginia Tech, every other ACC member has at least two conference losses. Does this mean that the ACC championship game will likely feature two of these five aforementioned squads?

Why Syracuse Football will AVOID a Second Half Collapse | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; video; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse Orange Football has had a second half of the season collapse in each of the past three seasons. But, that shouldn't be the case for Fran Brown's squad in 2024. First of all, Syracuse has a better quarterback in Kyle McCord, despite coming off a five interception performance against the Pitt Panthers. The Orange also have a more manageable schedule compared to the past three seasons, with the Miami Hurricanes being the lone ranked opponent left. Plus, the Cuse needs to have a short-term memory.

Jackson Holzer believes Syracuse Football will finish the year strong on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

Looking Ahead to 2024 Week 11

From the official ACC release of Monday, October 28, 2024...

Two Games Set; Five Others Placed on Six-Day Flex Window for Week 11

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference and ESPN have announced that they will use a six-day flex to determine the kickoff times and networks for the five ACC games scheduled for Week 11 that have not yet been announced.
It was previously announced that California and Wake Forest will play at 8 p.m. ET on ACC on Friday, November 8, in Winston Salem, North Carolina, while Florida State will take on Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC on Saturday, November 9.
The game times and networks for the remaining five games will be made on a six-day selection following the conclusion of the games on November 2.

Friday, November 8

  • California at Wake Forest – 8 p.m. ET on ACCN

Saturday, November 9

  • Florida State at Notre Dame – 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC

Flexed Six-Day Selections

  • Syracuse at Boston College
  • Duke at NC State
  • Clemson at Virginia Tech
  • Miami at Georgia Tech
  • Virginia at Pitt
From Matt Sarzniak's blog post "CFB TV Confirmations for 2024 Week 11 (11/5/24 - 11/9/24)", here are the possibilities for Week 11 on hold games:

ACC: CW at 12pm and ACCN at 3:30pm and 8pm are guaranteed. ESPN (12pm or 3:30pm) and ESPN2 (7pm) are possibilities
Big Ten: NBC at 12pm (yes, you read that correctly), CBS at 3:30pm, FOX at 8pm are confirmed. It appears that there's also a Peacock option. Washington at Penn State will not air at noon, so it does not appear to be an option for NBC.
Big 12: ESPN will take one game for either ESPN (12pm or 3:30pm) or ESPN2 (7pm). FOX Sports will have three games to show across two FOX openings (12pm & 4pm) and two FS1 openings (3:30pm & 7pm)
SEC: One game will air at 7pm ESPN and the other at 7:45pm on SECN

The SEC has already taken all of the ABC slots.

Here are the ACC possibilities in chart form (ACC is guaranteed, while ACC/XII is a possibility)

ABCSECSECSEC
CWACCPac2Xfinity Series
ESPNACC/XIIACC/XIISEC
ESPN2AmericanAmericanACC/XII

NOTE: CW, ESPN and ESPN2 also have Late Night games this Saturday, but one is Pac-2, one is Big XII, and the third is FCS. Also, there's an ACC basketball game on ACCN at noon (Tennessee at Louisville).

Bottom Line:

The ACC is essentially competing with the Big XII for 2 of the 3 ESPN/2 slots (noon, 3:30, and 7 pm). The Big XII will get one of those slots and the ACC will get the other two. After that decision, it's a matter of placing the 5 ACC games into the 5 TV slots.

6) Virginia Tech Hokies (5-3, 3-1) - bad news for Syracuse is that the Hokies seem to be playing better, but they are also only 2-2 on the road this season

7) Syracuse Orange (5-2, 2-2) - the good news for Syracuse is that every game the rest of the way will be on a Saturday where the Orange are 4-0

ACC college football continues in Week 10 with six games.

I preview all of them here, breaking down what’s at stake and what both teams must do to win.

Last week, I went 6-2 straight up, hitting 75% of my predictions. That gives me a 54-26 conference record, good for a 68% success rate on the season.

My picks for this week, both against the spread and straight up, are included with each breakdown as summarized in the table below.

Duke at No. 5 Miami

Saturday, November 2
9:00 am PT, ABC

BETMGMSPORTSBOOK Line: Miami -20.5
What’s at Stake:
Miami is undefeated and seeking a bye in the Playoff.
The Vegas oddsmakers expect a convincing win, but Duke might be better than they expect. The Blue Devils are coming off a tough loss, though, and have dropped two of their last three.
A convincing Miami win would be noted by the Selection Committee.
Why Duke Wins: The Blue Devils contain the Miami running backs and Maalik Murphy doesn’t turn the ball over.
Why Miami Wins: The Hurricanes’ offensive line wins the line of scrimmage to establish the run game and Cam Ward passes with his normal efficiency.
Against Spread: Duke
Straight Up: Miami

Stanford at NC State
Saturday, November 2
9:00 am PT, ACC Network

BETMGMSPORTSBOOK Line: NC State -10
What’s at Stake:
The Cardinal head to the East Coast on a five-game losing streak.
Troy Taylor’s offense has been mostly ineffective and the defense is poor. NC State is coming off a bye after beating California in Berkeley.
This game could get ugly.
Why Stanford Wins: The defense gets stops and the traditional run game is successful.
Why NC State Wins: The front seven gets penetration into the backfield and consistently forces Stanford into third and longs.
Against Spread: NC State
Straight Up:
NC State

Virginia Tech at Syracuse
Saturday, November 2
9:00 am PT, The CW

BETMGMSPORTSBOOK Line: Virginia Tech -4
What’s at Stake:
Syracuse is at a pivotal point in its season.
The Orange lost to Stanford earlier in the year but then rattled off three straight wins until getting embarrassed by Pitt last weekend.
Coming off a loss and playing at home, the year’s momentum hangs in the balance.
Why Virginia Tech Wins: The secondary makes plays in the passing game and the defensive line wins the physicality battle.
Why Syracuse Wins: Kyle McCord has enough time to find open receivers and doesn’t turn the ball over.
Against Spread: Syracuse
Straight Up:
Syracuse

North Carolina at Florida State

Saturday, November 2
12:30 pm PT, ACC Network

BETMGMSPORTSBOOK Line: North Carolina -2.5
What’s at Stake:
North Carolina might have found an answer.
The Tar Heels snapped their four-game losing streak with a blowout win over Virginia.
Mack Brown is a good coach and another convincing win on the road would signal a turnaround.
Why North Carolina Wins: Omarion Hampton rushes for more than 100 yards and the front seven contains Florida State’s run game.
Why Florida State Wins: The offensive line gets the push needed to establish the running backs and the defense limits explosive plays.
Against Spread: North Carolina
Straight Up:
North Carolina

Miami, Pitt and SMU all moved up a spot or two. Clemson got the bye week drop. Notre Dame rose 4 spots for beating Navy. Rx: ACC Fans, Take Action! 2024 October

The problem (as I see it):

The ACC has written itself into a bit of a corner, contract-wise. The only non-Disney network that can carry ACC football is The CW, and they basically get whatever scraps Disney sends their way (they never get to pick first or even second). That results in some unfavorable TV situtations. Most notably, ESPN fails to promote ACC football while simultaneously over-promoting SEC football. This is reflected in the amount of coverage during studio shows, College GameDay, and halftime shows.
Related (and arguably worse) is the fact that ESPN College GameDay often chooses to cover games on Fox, NBC, or CBS, instead of ACC events - which they actually have the rights to broadcast! This has already happened three times this season:

Oct. 12 - Ohio State at Oregon (NBC)
Oct. 26 - Washington at Indiana (Fox)
Nov. 2 - Ohio State at Penn State (Fox)

One could argue that ESPN is failing to fulfill their fiduciary responsibilities towards the ACC, given the fact that they hold exclusive rights to live ACC sports - but I'm told such lawsuits are difficult to win. Therefore, I'm proposing a less litigious approach...

Consumer Action*

When you're not a party to the TV contract, you don't own controlling stock in Disney, Comcast, or even your local TV station, and you're not the President of an ACC school or the Commissioner of the conference... what can you do? Are you powerless? No! You still have an important role in the ACC football ecosystem, albeit a small one when taken alone. You're a consumer of the product, and you vote with (1) your television and (2) your wallet.
You see, there are two things Disney cares about a lot more than the ACC or even the SEC: (1) television ratings and (2) subscription fees. And where do those things come from? from all of you! Thus, taken as a group, consumers can have a powerful say in what Disney, ABC, and ESPN do.
One of the most powerful consumer actions, when done right, is the boycott. You don't have to make sales completely stop, either, just make them drop enough to make the stockholders start crying about it! That brings me to my first prescription:

Rendering shows the proposed 291-unit Gateway Apartments along East Fayette Street in Syracuse.Passero Associates

https://www.syracuse.com/news/2024/...-tax-deal-for-gateway-apartments-project.html (PS; $; Moriarty)

The developer of the proposed 291-unit Gateway Apartments project in Syracuse is seeking $24 million in tax breaks stretching over 15 years.

The Syracuse Industrial Development Agency will hold a public hearing Tuesday on developer Christopher Geiger’s request for $18.3 million in property tax discounts, $4.7 million in sales tax exemptions on construction materials and a $696,148 exemption from the state mortgage tax.

The property tax discounts would be part of a 15-year payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement.

The developer would pay $10.8 million in property taxes over 15 years under the proposed agreement, which would be $18.3 million less than he would pay if the apartments were fully taxed during that time. The project would pay normal property taxes after that.

The developer would have to pay a $1.3 million project fee to the agency for its assistance.

Members of the industrial development agency are scheduled to meet at 8 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 29) in Common Council Chambers at Syracuse City Hall. They are scheduled to vote on the application after the hearing.

Geiger, who has formed a company called GW Syracuse LLC for the project, is proposing to build an eight-story apartment building along East Fayette Street near Almond Street, according to plans filed with the agency.

Jason Purdy, the owner of Now & Later, is closing his Tipperary Hill taproom for good on Dec. 24. (Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)(Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)

https://www.syracuse.com/living/202...-opens-new-location-in-downtown-syracuse.html (PS; Miller)

An eclectic bar in Syracuse’s Tipperary Hill neighborhood known for its extensive beer selection will shut off its taps for good on Christmas Eve, nine years to the day after it opened.

Now & Later, located at 620 Ulster St. at the corner of Avery Avenue, bills itself as both a taproom and a bottle shop, a place where you can drink an unusual beer and then shop for brews to take home.

Jason Purdy and Sarah Norcross opened Now & Later on Dec. 24, 2015. They gutted the old Brilbeck’s corner grocery store and turned it into a rustic emporium devoid of flat-screen TVs. Customers gathered to enjoy hard-to-find craft beers and have a conversation.

“Times have changed, people have changed, and the craft beer industry has changed in the past nine years,” Purdy said on Wednesday. “It just got to be too much.”

Now & Later weathered the government-imposed shutdowns during the Covid pandemic, but business never fully returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Earlier this week, the patio was packed with customers enjoying the summer-like weather while drinking some of the 500 to 600 beers in the grocery-store-like refrigerators.

Genesee Brewery is bringing back its once popular 12 Horse Ale in a limited release this fall.

https://www.syracuse.com/drinks/202...back-in-a-nod-to-beer-drinkers-nostalgia.html (PS; $; Cazentre)

Once again, Rochester’s Genesee Brewing Co. is reaching back into its long history to bring back a fan favorite from previous beer-drinking generations.

Genesee’s 12 Horse Ale, an English-style ale first introduced in 1933, will be back for a limited release across Upstate New York starting this week. It will be available in stores in packs of 12-ounce cans and on draft at select locations, according to a brewery news release.

Genesee 12 Horse was once one of the brewery’s most popular beers, and legend says it even served as one of the building blocks for the later and more popular Genny Cream Ale.

It was part of Genesee’s regular lineup, along with Genesee Beer, Genny Light and the cream ale, until 2012. Since then, it has been featured in limited releases in 2018 and again in 2019, which was the last time it was widely available.

It is one of the legacy Genesee beers that customers most frequently ask the brewery to bring back.

This 12 Horse release is the first to come from a new program called the Genesee Vault. That will bring back other legacy Genny products at different times.‘

“The Genesee Vault is a long time coming,” Tiffany Bowman, brand manager for Genesee, said in a news release. “There are so many delicious legacy recipes from Genesee’s past. It only felt right that 12 Horse Ale leads the charge as the first release from the Genesee Vault.”
